There was some uncertainty about whether or not you can "walk" the race. In fact you certainly can do so, and as I understand it, plenty of people do.
The 5K is 3.1 miles. It's required that participants maintain a 15 minute per mile pace, which is a fairly brisk walk (set the treadmill at 4 mph to get a feel).
The half marathon, 13.1 miles, you can even do the same thing. Here you have to maintain a 16 minute per mile pace.
At risk of borrowing a page from several other podcasters, I bet if you (Pete) were to do the half marathon, even if you walked almost the entire thing, for the benefit of Give Kids the World, I think quite a few listeners would support you.
In the interest of trying to prod you, as well as the listeners, I'll offer up a $100 donation to GKTW if you commit to giving it a go for the half.

Half is a pretty big commitment to a self-proclaimed non-runner (to put it politely :lmao: ). I was quite proud of Kathy, Teresa and Pete who said they'd give the 5K a go next year :goodvibes
Good luck team! :yay:
cheers,

Hi Podcast team- if you're thinking about the 5k, check out the c25k( couch to 5k) training plan. It's gotten a lot of people off the couch and on the road:

Yes, it would be pretty big, indeed, but I figured I'd try dangling a carrot out there. I'd still be more than willing to offer up a donation for each podcaster who completes the 5k!

I think you guys are on to something here! If they commit to it soon, I'm pretty sure a ton of us would at least throw 5-10 dollars on the pile for GKTW...that could add up fast....

I have no desire to do the half marathon and I can't think of anything that would make me want to run it. :)
I figured I would start small with the 5 K and see how I feel after that.

I'd happily donate money to the cause too!
I'd also be happy to donate my time, support and knowledge to anybody on the podcast team who needs it. (Or anyone else on the board who wants to train for that matter!)
I organize a training group for runners and walkers in Philadelphia (Philly Fit, a branch of USA Fit, for anybody local to Philadelphia) that helps beginner athletes get into endurance events, so I know it can be done with the right kind of motivation and education. In fact, we have a sister organization right in Orlando that starts it's training program in March.
I've done 11 marathons and 24 half marathons, some running, some walking, and prior to my first marathon I had never been any kind of athlete and had never even done a 5K.
I'll be at WDW in 2010 for my 2nd Goofy Challenge and I really encourage anybody here who wants to finish a full or half marathon to take the plunge. It can really change you life!
"When you cross that finish line, no matter how fast, no matter how slow, it will change you life forever!" -- Dick Beardsley (holds record for the 3rd fastest American Marathon time)

I like that plan. I think I am going to try that. I'd like to go to the 5K in 2010, so its a start. And if nothing else, it will get me in a bit better shape for the cruise.:goodvibes

I actualy want to try for the 1/2 marathon. I've never run in my life, but it is a dream of mine and I really want to do it. It is my understanding that the space fills up for these races very quickly, so I need to make up my mind soon.

Is there a way others could do the 5K to raise money for GKTW? I have been thinking about doing the 5k for some time now and would love to participate as well.
