View Full Version : Victoria & Albert's - Picture Trip Report

This may take awhile, after all there are 6-8 courses (depending on how you count) and 3 diners.
Background: DH and I have been here twice, both in the 1990's (someone else was paying). I recall it being elegant and nice, but either they have raised the bar, or my appreciation has improved (or both), because this was WOW (well worth it). This dinner was Mom, DS(20) and DS(18) - no special event, just thought:
(a) they were old enough to appreciate it
(b) it is on the DDE list
(c) I had some Visa rewards to spend
(d) we were looking for something "new" to try (for DSs) and
(e) it had been awhile (1997).
Summary: WOW. I have to admit, I cook, I eat, I enjoy wine. I am willing to spend money on food, but I do consider the cost (value-for-the-dollar) in my decisions. I can be happy with a really good can of beans. I can appreciate a bite-sized morsel created from 16 ingredients, 8 steps, and hours of time. I considered V&A a "once a decade" experience, based on price. I will be thinking hard about how to justify returning in September with DH. 'Nuff with the words. Here are the pictures.....
For those who may not already be aware, there are other nights to this story..
Night #1 - Victoria & Alberts - Picture Trip Report (January, 2009) - THIS REPORT

Wine Pairings - I thought, since I was going out on a financial limb anyway, why not try the wine pairings. I presumed they would be small (like Artist Point, or Brown Derby - on ounce or so per tasting). I was pleasantly surprised to have 6 full (normal portion, not "to the brim") glasses of wine. For $60, that works out to $10/glass - pretty reasonable at most Disney restaurants - really reasonable for the quality of what they were pouring here.
The bad news - my sons are not old enough to help out - and I typically only have a couple of glasses of wine a week, IF I am cooking with it - a relative lightweight.
The good news - one of said sober sons has a driver's license to drive us back to All Stars Sports (well, we were moving to WLV the next day, but conserve our DVC points on Fri/Sat nights). Yes, you heard me correctly - ASSp. Poor security guard at GF when he read the parking permit on the dash of the rental PT Cruiser (only car choice available to me with Avis/Priceline - was OK, though). He recovered quickly and politely noted that valet is complimentary for V&A patrons.
Oh, yes - the FOOD.
Amuse Bouche - there is no description from the menu, but I think I recall most of the items - I will make up my own descriptions...
The Amuse Bouch plate consisted on 4 sections, each containing a bite-sized tidbit of seafood, one plate per person....
Exquisitely tender morsel of lobster in butter....

Loving your review! I almost licked the screen when I saw that lobster amuse!
How did I nor realize that V&A's is on DDE??? That would save my family about $140! Even with the mandatory 18% tip! Oh this is interesting...I think I might have to talk to my DDad...He has been interested in trying V&A for quite some time.
Here's my math...
$125/person + $60/person for Food & Wine
$185/person
TOTAL (pre-tax) $555
TIP (18%) $100
TOTAL (with tax & tip) $691
With DDE $148/person
TOTAL (pre-tax) $444
TIP (18%) $80
TOTAL (with tax & tip) $550
SAVINGS $140!
Considering that we dont way to do Party for the Senses this year, which was $135/head this past year, $148 at V&A with wine tastings isn't that dramatically different. Hmm...the possibilities :thumbsup2

We've been going to WDW since 1989 - and this is the first time we planned and paid to do this. It is worth the wait. It is also worth salting away a small sum a week with the intention of splurging in a few years!!
Your photos are always nothing but amazing!
Thank you.

I'm pretty sure my sons used the french bread to remove all trace of residue from the cup!!

V&A on DDE - pretty nice, hmmm? I think your math and logic are impeccable. Who can resist it? As I often explain (with spreadsheets in hand) - well, its not so much that we SAVE - I'd like to think we just get really good value for the dollar.......
I'll be back, and it won't be next decade, either.
Yeah! I love V & A reviews although I've yet to try it. Oh, and for what it's worth, I love ASSports. :rotfl:
I don't mind ASSp, and I appreciate staying on Disney grounds for a reasonable price. I'd be fibbing if I said I loved it, though. I do, however, love the Wilderness Lodge. DVC, 1992 - best investment I ever made - and the only one appreciating in value and generating revenue......

There were 3 duets of bread and butter between courses.
French Bread and something-special butter. This might have been the butter created by an artisan in Vermont who sells their entire inventory to Disney. Butter, perfect. Bread, perfect. Crisp crust, airy, steamy, and briefly moist when cracked open. I didn't take any notes (thought the menu would suffice for reference). Guess I'll have to do more research in September.....
http://ehagerty.zenfolio.com/img/v4/p412536060-4.jpg
Truffle bread, truffle butter - unique and delicious. You can tell from this picture that I was falling behind on the consumption of my wine pairings!
http://ehagerty.zenfolio.com/img/v4/p990727429-4.jpg
The whole wheat - or oat - bread, also very good, eluded being photographed somehow.....

These "courses" do not have a name - we'll just go in menu order.....
At this point, the DSs are getting acclimated to have every crumb removed between each course, having a new napkin after each foray to the restroom, and listening to subdued harp music.

(Side bar note - V&A is NOT an easy photo-shoot. Dark ambient light, white plates, required use of flash (for my camera, anyway), difficult focal length so close to the subject. You can really see the challenge in the contrast between the white plate and the darker roses behind it. Weddings are tough because of the contrast between groom-black and bride-white. Black belt tests are tougher because of white gees and motion. V&A was a close third. Oh, and I am an IT Project Manager by profession and the camera is Canon EOS 2006 - two questions people usually ask about this point in the thread.)
Coming up next, Elk & Duck.....

We'll try both, please!! 2 Elk, 1 Duck

You might think "I don't know if I'd like Elk" or "I don't like mustard on hot dogs, I probably won't like it in spaetzle" or "Kraut, you kidding me?" But everything here is top quality - never gamey or harsh. Among us, we ordered everything on the standard menu and we all loved everything. This is not a difficult place to be adventurous!!! I wouldn't characterize DSs as adventurous eaters, either.
Hmmmmm, can I get one more course in before the hockey game??? Sabres on a road trip to the West Coast, late start - why not!!
Next course - from the sea - grouper or scallops? Both, please!!

What you have here are three post-dessert treats
Left: cookie - some variation on Russian tea cookie, Mexican wedding cake - almond, I think. Excellent, but for those of us of a certain age, we grew up in neighborhoods with first generation immigrants who made these from scratch every Christmas, and shared them. Excellent, familiar, but not what you would call unique (not that everything has to be unique, just observing...)
Middle: chocolate covered caramel - liquid caramel - liquid still slightly WARM caramel. Unlike anything I've had before. Buttery, rich - probably not something that can be commercially made / sold - wouldn't withstand distribution.
Right: probably has a "real" name, but to get you oriented quickly, we'll call it a "gourmet gum drop" - only soft and chewy - with fresh, tart fruit flavor. Loved it! DSs let me have them all!!
Up next (and last), a visit to the kitchen!

At this point, I was just pleased to be in the kitchen - I have NO idea what they were doing.
Why was I in the kitchen? Dunno - they asked if I was interested! Maybe they ask everyone. Maybe they thought anyone silly enough to take pictures of food might LIKE to see the kitchen. Who knows! Next time, I'll take more pictures and ask more questions.
I don't know if it was the Manager (Israel Perez) or our server Anita (formerly known as "Victoria") who mentioned that V&A has three times the staff proportionate to the number of diners (I think that was the ratio - we are talking SIX glasses of wine over 3 hours.... with at least a couple of bottles of bubble-water). Might contribute to "three times the cost". Almost certainly contributes to the number of items, complexity of each item, sheer detail composing each item into artwork available to us in this very special, delicious, creative, beautiful, unique dining experience.
I loved it.

Firstly - LOVED the review, and despite the complications with all the white and dark - the pictures were wonderful - thank you for sharing!!
Also - Not sure it's what V&A would call them but the "gourmet gum drop" you mention - we have something very similar in the UK and they are known as Jellies....I don't eat the ones you can get in the supermarkets and such - too sweet and artifical....however, I have tried some made by top chocolatiers and they are as they should be, firm but soft, not gooey, and the fruity taste....oh boy - sweet and tart!!

I am not nearly as active on these boards as I plan to be in retirement- unfortunately, that isn't anytime soon (and it's not the economy's fault...). So, thank you for the appreciation. Do you think they would have these jellies as a Godiva store - or is that not high end enough?

I sent him a link to this thread - and he actually send me this email back:
Thanks so much for the pictures. During my travels I have taken many
pictures but never this beautiful. Each of them told a story and your
eloquence describing each item made them even better. Your story on the
wine pairing was also a wonderful compliment. I strive to find
innovative ways to offer great quality and value in our wine program and
I'm glad that you enjoyed my choices
It was a wonderful pleasure serving you and your family. Please call me
any time in the future if I may be of assistance. Perhaps we'll see you
next time at our Chef Table.
I include it here, not for his reference to my pictures, but as a compliment to him in particular and V&A in general. He didn't have to, you know? But he did.
p.s. - I don't think I should post his email address, but if you talk to him on the way out, he will probably give it to you himself.

I think that is one heck of a fine manager!
I think so often people go to a great restaurant and compliment the servers/chef/maitre d' and all while there, and so people should. But the nature of your compliments are even more enduring.
I really liked your photos/ comments etc AND his response--not a stock phrasing of "Thank you". I feel that he was pleased and touched by your appreciation. I like these win win moments!

Terrific review. I feel guilty saying this - last time at V&A's (Oct 2007) we went with another couple and stopped at Mizner's first for cocktails, then ordered a bottle of wine for the four of us to start, then all ordered the wine pairings and then finished off a half bottle of Penfold's Grange that the table next to us did not finish (I can't imagine what they charge for Grange at V&A's).

Looking forward to another V&A review. Are you going to CG as well? If so can you ask what is up with the flatbreads being removed from the menu? Also, I'd LOVE a current CG menu if you are going (I'll be there on June 1st :goodvibes) Thanks!!
Have a fantastic meal and wish your DS Happy Birthday :)

Hey - thanks - I recognize you from the Bocuse D'or thread!. We just had a most memorable meal last night at V&A - stay tuned!! The pictures are uploading (from PC to web host site) as I type. We are heading off to Artist's Point at 5:30, then La Nouba - so I am unlikely to post them here tonight - but sometime over the next couple of days, the amuse bouche should start showing up!
Also - I asked the manager (Israel Perez) what the chances were that Disney would be able to host the Bocuse D'or USA finals again in 2010. He didn't say, but he mentioned that the V&A chef, Scott Hunnel, is married to the woman/chef responsible for the F&W festival. I told him we had IDEAS and would forward them for him to share with here. May have to start a thread just for that!

As a matter of fact..... I will be at CG tomorrow night (5:30 in case anyone else will be there). I always keep my menus - although, without a scanner, I don't usually post them. I will inquire about the flatbreads for sure - since that is what I was planning to order for myself. Stay tuned.
And now - I really must get other clothes on for dinner, as I am still in my "archery" clothes from that outing today in Ft Wilderness (will have to write that up as well!!)
Lovely evening, all!

OK. So there was pre-dessert gellato, then dessert, then post-dessert snack. My kind of place!!
Very nice. I'm not sure I could do V&A as much as the food looks so good. But I am picky. Nothing interested me (in terms of eating, not your lovely report) until about the entree.

The quick update..... before I turn in for the night....
1) Flatbread oven is awaiting repair. They expect it to be fixed, and flatbreads back on the menu, June 2nd.
2) Dinner was great - will be uploading pictures tonight, not sure when I'll be posting. If you are subscribed to CG thread, the details will be there.
3) Yoshe had added a soft shell crab roll (Medusa - you'll understand when you see the pictures) - for as long as it is in season.
4) New chef - Brian - is officially in place (from Animal Kingdom Lodge)

I have not been the DISboards in quite awhile, so I smiled when I saw your revview of V&A's...I love seeing old familiar faces (well, ok, I mean screen names) and your threads ALWAS make me smile.
I have dined at V&A's once, on our 10 year wedding anniversary (which was 2 years ago) and it was such a lovely experience. I don't know when we will get back there, so thank you for sharing such details with us.
BTW, your sons are GORGEOUS!

Just tonight we were able to secure reservations at V&A on the first night of our Disney vacation. We will be meeting our son and his girlfriend (have never met her!) they live on the opposite side of the country from us.
Never thought we would be able to get the reservation because it's less than 3 months but my husband said why not try and it worked. Gotta love a husband like that.
We are so looking forward to the trip to meet up with our son and his girlfriend and this will be the perfect start!

The courses being small is the point. Just big enough to fully taste and enjoy the course, but not so large you are completely full for the next course. By the end of the meal you are stuffed. V&A is far from pointless. It by far ranks as one of the best meals I have ever had. When I was there earlier this year, there were 6 menu courses, plus the amuse bouche (which was 4 separate items in our case), plus 3 bread & butter courses, plus the candy plate, plus a cranberry orange loaf for the next morning.

I have never been to the V & A.
That being said, POINTLESS!?!?!?
(Oh, yeah, wait....if they think it is pointless, they won't go...if they don't go, it will be easier for me to get a reservation...hmmm....)
Yep, its pointless, by golly!
Thank you for the beautiful review and STUNNING photos.
Did the sommalier check in with you and ask your preferences for wine or were the pairings just sent out?

I can't address all of the recent posts in the time I have today, but in response to the wine pairing question.....
The menu you receive contains all of the wine pairings proposed - preselected by the team that day to most complement the course. However, you are not limited to what appears on the menu. If you are adventuresome - or would like to request a $100 with commensurate upgrade in pairings, they are more than ready, willing and able to accommodate. Also, if you don't care for Reisling, for instance, you can have a conversation (as simple as "something else", or a detailed, educational discussion on the alternatives) about substituting that particular pairing.
To give you some idea of how talented and accommodating this restaurant and service team are, here is a picture of Israel Perez (one of two people who manage the wine cellar) giving me a tour of his cellar.
V&A Manager, Israel Perez, touring his wine cellar:
http://ehagerty.zenfolio.com/img/v3/p110649878-4.jpg
It is not a great artistic photograph because of the limited space, but this picture contains a thousand words:
1. He was enthusiastic by someone who cared about wine.
2. He enjoys sharing his passion for wine
3. He understands, time permitting, that customers may be interested in seeing his wine cellar.
4. Wine cellars build recently look a lot more like a closet than the romantic picture I had in my head from the French movie at Epcot
5. That some bottles of wine in his cellar are priced at $11,000 - or more (the one in his hand).
I was fascinated by all of his commentary:
1. You can never tell by how the customer looks who might order such a bottle (usually ordered by the most unassuming looking people).
2. How he and Chef Scott travel to evaluate and learn from peer restaurants around the world.
I could go on and on - and will, when I have more time.

I think this is the place that we ate at when I was in 7th grade-around 1987-and I was old enough to apprieciate it then. I didn't like everything on the menu, but I was willing to try everything. My parents had the "Gold Key" plan then and had TS for breakfast, lunch and dinner. At 33 now, the food looks amazingly delicious.

I just found this thread and my mouth is watering!
but what in the heck is big eye tuna? that sounds so scary! :scared: I hope if I ever get to go, they have tuna on the menu and DO NOT call it big eye tuna -
I would have to opt for the crab canneloni if they did that - which would be a shame since tuna is pretty much my favorite thing in the world! Way to tease me with just the hint of red on the edge of the tuna! I want to flip that sucker apart and bask in all the yummy rareness!

Actually, we shared one wine pairing - specifically, they poured one portion into two glasses. I am a little reluctant to imply that they automatically do this - but it is a testament to their customer service that they are willing to do this. My suggestion is to let them know you are really interested in the wine pairing, but you cannot drink that much by yourself, and is there any possibility that you could share? Hopefully they won't be inundated with requests for this - but that people who really want to try the wine pairings are encouraged to work with the service staff to see what they come up with. I have done this at other restaurants, such as Rioja in Denver (if you ever get the chance....!!!). I usually start my discussion with the server with "I like small portions and a lot of variety - in my food AND wines. Can I consider half wine pairings with each course?" So far, most restaurants have been very accommodating.....
