My wife wants to be able to use an Ipod in her car but it does not have an aux plug.
I heard you can use an fm transmitter hooked to your ipod.
Does anyone have any experience with this and maybe a recommend one?
The smaller and easier to operate the better.
Thanks all !

In my experience, you are better off to invest in a good one.
I started with a small one that was oval shaped. It wasn't worth it. DH realized how bad it was on a 2 hour car trip. Before going to our destination, he stopped at Best Buy. We bought one that plugged into the cigarette lighter. It had a cradle that adjusted to fit the different models. It was far better than the other.
Just checked, it is a Griffin Roadtrip. This one served me until we bought a new car with the jack.

I agree about the Griffin Roadtrip. It works great for me.

I use something similar from DLO. It plugs into the cigarette lighter (do cars still actually have those anymore?) and has a cradle for your iPod. You then set the device to a non-working radio station and your car radio to that same station and the iPod plays over your car speakers. It's nice since it also charges your iPod while you drive, so you don't arrive at your destination with a drained iPod!

Mine is like drakethib's except it's made by Belkin. It's so easy, you just plug into cig lighter. IPOD goes into a cradle. It then finds you a station with an unused signal. It works great. I had the Griffin road trip a few years back. This was much harder to use.
I used my IPOD just today. Listened to tunes for the entire 1.5 hour ride. It was great.

I'm glad to hear people have had success with these...I've got one and it doesn't work for cr*p! I have a Griffin but it's not the docking one...and I live near Chicago which has tons of stations so that could be the problem. If I'm in the middle of nowhere I have no issues. ;)

I just got one and it is a Belkin (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8732794&type=product&id=1201307759251). It was super easy to use. I plugged it in to the acces. port, plugged it into the iTouch and pushed a button on the Belkin and it found a radio station frequency that worked. It also allows you to program a few radio stations into its memory.

I live on Long Island and the getting a station is a real problem for me. I have the Belkin also, but if you live in a large city, it's horrible, at least for me. As per my Mac Geek husband, it doesn't matter how good it is if you don't have stations available to you, it will suck.

Ours is a Belkin too and had no probs with it.
As you're discovering the iPod itself is just the tip of the iceberg - we've spent so much on accessories since :scared:

In my experience, your success with these is related to where you live and how many radio stations they have. I used to use one and it was great until a few more stations came on line and now I cannot find a clear station.
Does she have a cassette player in her car? To be honest, ugly as it is, my best sound (pre AUX jack) was through a cassette adapter.
Good luck!

I just bought my wife a new 2009 SUV and you would think for what cars cost nowadays they would have a stupid aux in port. :confused3

What type of SUV did you buy?
Might try this website... http://usaspec.com/ipod.html
(May be more of a pain than it's worth though!)

Kimthat's what I have too- i think it was like $99 or close to it- but it works well and scans for up to 3 stations that will work. I've had it for almost 2 years and love it.

The Griffin I bought was expensive but didnt work. Total static. You can get a new radio with a hook up at Best Buy, w/ install for a couple hundred, worth it!

well there are many ways to go actually. i work at best buy as the car electronics installation manager i would suggest a wired fm mod its the same as the belkin and monster i trip but you have no static at all it runs 140 to 150 but not to have static its worth it. pm me if you have any one has any questions just let me know the make model and year of the car and i will give you your options to get your ipod sounding great.

I use a device similar to this when I do not need to charge the iPod. I have a 1.5 hour commute to/from work and this will all my daughter to play with the iPod in the back seat while it is still transmitting just fine to the radio. It's really very convenient not having any wires connecting to it. Now on longer trips I use a Belkin that is pretty pricey because I need to charge while using it.

I agree....our van is an older model and still has a cassette player. I've had much better luck using the cassette adapter than I ever did with the radio frequency unit. I live in Northeast Wisconsin, so you'd think there wouldn't be a lot of problems finding a radio frequency to use, but I've never had good luck with it.
I tend to use the radio frequency unit to power the iPod on long trips, while still playing it through the cassette adapter. At least I can keep my iPod charged on those long trips! ::MinnieMo

I guess I've just been lucky with my iPod Touch. I have the simple, less than $20 attachment that I posted a link to above (someone was selling on e-Bay, mine is similar) and I have great, clear reception with the iPod anywhere in the truck. I use FM 89.7 as I have found the lower part of the band to be easier to find a station.
When I drive into the city (Atlanta) there is a PBS station that can interfere so I put the iPod in the cup holder (which in a GMC truck is really close to the radio) problem solved. *Note* My truck is an older model, a 1996. The radio is standard with both cassette and CD. When I use the cassette adapter I heard some buzz plus I was tied to a two foot range.
Here is the link again so you can see what the device looks like:
