I was just very pleasantly surprised when I looked into booking a room at the Comfort Suites next to Atlantis in February 2003. It seems that Choice hotels offers the reduced government rate to all Federal employees at all hotels, regardless of whether you are traveling for business or pleasure. To quote their website:

Choice Hotels show their appreciation for military and government travelers with guaranteed one and two person rates at more than 2,700 participating hotels. Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, you can take advantage of these special rates based on per diems established by the US Federal Government each year.

These discounted rates (+) are available to the following:

Federal, state and local government employees
Active military personnel
Cost reimbursable contractors
Amtrak employees
Members of all retired military associations

I got a suite for $132. The "normal" rate was $270.:D :sunny:

gosh, I wonder if being an employee of a state funded University would count?

If you're being paid by the State, I'm sure they consider you a State employee. You might need to bring a pay stub with you to confirm your status (it may not be readily definable by your work ID). When my husband was a grad assistant at University of Maryland, he was considered a state employee.
