View Full Version : New Year Eve on the Wonder (With a Service Dog)

This was are 3rd cruise on the Wonder(and best by FAR). It was Joy (DW), Shadow (D Dog) & myself this time.
A little bit about myself. I'm a disabled veteran, I have a service dog named Shadow. This was Shadows 3rd time on the ship. The most asked question is, "Were does he potty". Here's a photo we took the first time.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh222/paragd911/SHPotty-1.jpg
This time when we got into are stateroom, Shadow needed to "potty". He knew where to go on the veranda. The kiddie pool was there but there was no grass in the pool. Shadow looked at the pool for a min, then me to say,"Where is the Green stuff". I got on the phone quickly to get the grass. When I was on the phone the "grass" got here in a box. The worker said the shipment of sod was late.
After the life boat drill, we went to the sail away party. After that we saw the "Golden Mickeys" http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh222/paragd911/DSC00989.jpg
It was New Year Eve, for dinner it was "formal night". Most of the people were in Fancy gowns and suits. I felt under dressed. :) They had a special menu(that we took). At dinner they gave us hats & tiaras to wear.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh222/paragd911/100_0607-1.jpg
At 11 the party started. About 11:45 we got a free glass (or 2) of Champagne. The young ones got grape juice in the same glasses. They had the count down then the Balloon drop in the Atrium. Looked like New York City lol. Donald was dressed as "Baby New Year" & Goofy was "Old Man Time"

Ooh! That's a new thing I learned today, now I won't be wondering where service dogs go potty in ships... I wonder if people will believe me when I just tell them: "Oh a plastic kiddie pool with some grass in it" :rotfl2:
Awesome trip report, can't wait to read more!

Well we woke up about 10 am. (we stayed up till 2am) Did i tell you we left the kids home on this trip? The kids were mad.  They will get over it, we are going on the Wonder for Spring Break in March. (They don't know yet.)
It was are sea day. It was chilly (73) & windy. Joy had a manicure & pedicure at the Spa in the afternoon. The manicurist was scared to death of Shadow. (Shadow is a lover) oh well...When we payed for manicure & pedicure, I noticed a sign for Massage, Facial, Champagne, Chocolate &the Forest Rain room $125. I said "Joy you should do that". The Spa worker said" We can do that for couples too". Long story cut short i was "talked into it". We set it up for the next day. The was Show was Toy Story. I was just "OK" I loved Hercules wished it was still there.
We ate dinner at Tritons

I have been on deck 6 & 7. I liked cat 6 more. if you have 4 ppl you need a cat 5 for the balcony. I love the room Wheelchair on deck 6. My dog didnt have any problem with his "potty" I really like the way Disney does accessabilt.

Hi
I have just found this thread and very interesting. I am a dog trainer and worked for Hearing Dogs in the UK for many many years until recently. I do cruise a lot and have been in discussions with them about access for dogs on UK cruise lines, as most of the trainers have little experience of cruising.
Some problems obviously arise, toileting being the main one, although our dogs are trained to toilet on command, it was interesting to see your tub with the grass - has got me thinking a bit really.
A meeting has taken place with one of the large cruise companies strangely enough by coincidence, I got chatting to one of the senior managers about my job when I was on holiday with this company and she was picking my brains about the implications of assistance dogs on a ship on an informal basis. Wish I had seen your photos then!.
Very interesting to see and the boots thing - we hadn't even thought about that!!!!

I loved reading about Shadow and about your trip.
Here's a question: Are dogs other than service animals allowed on the ship?
When we cruised, there was a young couple with a Weenie-Dog on board. I'm assuming Daushaunds are not generally used as service animals, although I am admittedly ignorant in thei regard. It was the cutest little thing, and we really enjoyed seeing his costumes on Pirate Night, etc., but I was suprised Disney allowed a dog on the cruise that was not a service animal.

I'm a trainer of Service Dogs. I see many "types of SDs" Disney doesn't let "pet dogs" on there. When i was on my Eastern Caribbean Cruise, A little dog was on there too. When I saw it, the dog was with a different person every time i saw it. I was MAD . I called Disney to tell them about it. ...Shadow has a Pirate Night costume,

My oldest and youngest daughters had to be convinced that their peanut allergies were not severe enough for them to qualify for one of the specially trained service dogs that are trained just north of ushttp://www.peanutdog.com/index.html (which I think are absolutely amazing and further proof of how smart dogs are BTW). I think my oldest daughter just wanted to be able to take a dog with her 24/7.

When are you going on the Dream? We get on the 7th on June.
We actually are doing the March 13th Dream followed by 3 days at WDW (AKL Kidani). I am going to try to convince my husband that we need to book onboard, depending on what comes up for late 2012 (hoping for a great Holiday cruise -- LONG one).
I am still keeping up with the Peanut Dogs -- my youngest daughter's allergies keep getting worse so it is always something that is a possibility.
I love your new dog that you are training! I have been on many flights with service dogs and I wish my kids were that quiet!

Hey Mark,
This is Gennifer & Priya from Breezin to the Bahamas Sept 2010
Sorry to hear Shadow in retiring now and missing out on the Dream!!!! Shadow was such a good dog and very well behaved. At dinner half the time I didn't even know he was under the table.
Had a question- Priya and I will be on the Dream for her 5th birthday and New Years eve.
So here are my questions
- Granted I know you are not the weather man on God...But was the weather like. What is it typically like that time of year in the Bahamas?
- Can you enjoy CC in December (weather man?).... Boo for us we missed CC on our trip due to the weather...lol
Remi or just stick with normal rotation?
- Do they do anything special for the kids in the clubs that you know off?
-Do the clubs stay open any later on NYE?
- Are the pools open on ship in Dec?
Thanks and hope to cruise with soon again.
Oh...was the Dream a Dream???
