View Full Version : Burning images to DVD R??

I have heard that I can save picture files (windows pc) to a dvd r. I have heard that dvd r has more space than the cd's I keep filling up.
I have media player, and cant get it done. Its not recognizing the disk.
I think with the cd's there was an auto format, but now i cant get it to work. Can I even use a dvd r to save photos?:confused3

I just do a drag and drop/copy and paste to burn my DVD's. When I insert a blank DVD disk, it asks what I want to to and I choose create a file disk using windows exploere (or something like that).

A CD has 650MB of space. A DVD has 4.5GB of space. A Blu-Ray DVD has 25GB of space.

I don't like the drag and drop method, though it can be done. Ideally, you use a standalone disc burning program, like Nero or the free CDBurnerXP (http://cdburnerxp.se/). (Yes, it can burn DVDs!) In these, you lay out what you want to put on the disc, then when you're ready, it burns it all at once. I highly recommend turning "verify" on so that you know that it's a successful burn, and for irreplaceable things, burn two copies and keep them in separate locations.

You can do a UDF format on a CD or DVD, which treats the disc like a giant floppy disk, but again, I think that's not a good idea for most situations. If you do do that, you'll want to be using rewritable discs.

Do you know if this is compatible with Vista (64 bit)? I can't seem to find that info on the website.

I just got a new laptop this morning, and it doesn't seem to have any CD burning software installed....unless I'm missing it. :confused3

Maybe a silly question, but are you sure that you have a DVD burner?

What version of Windows, XP or Vista??

Doesn't XP only burn to CD and not to DVD unless you have a separate burning program.

I would also suggest buring the disc at the slowest speed especially if this is your only method of backup. If you are really paranoid I would suggest only burning on archieve quality DVD-Rs. I've had discs that were burned a few years back that are now readable due to poor quality discs. They worked fine initially.

ukcatfan has a good question, are you sure your burner does dvds,

also how old is it, older burners either did dvd-r, or dvd+r,

you must have the right discs for those burners,,

newer burners work with both -r and +r

I second the idea of burning two copies or even three. ANd every couple of years copy over all those DVD's (onto fresh DVD's).

Maybe it is just me but I run into idiosyncrasies such as my DVD burner will burn silver and gold DVD's but not blue or gray ones. And my brother's won't read the gold DVD's I burn but will read my silver ones and his blue ones.

You might try updating the firmware for the burner. The mfg. will update from time to time for different brands and types of discs.
