How we're giving away the last podcast cruise

OK Gang - we have decided how we're giving away the last podcast cruise.

On this weeks show we are going to randomly select one reservation from the ones already booked on the Podcast cruise (5/10/2009) and give that person their cruise for free!!!

If you have already won a Podcast Cruise you are not eligible to win a second one.

We will be putting the reservation numbers of all current bookings for that cruise (you have to have the deposit paid, not just quotes or inquiries) into a hat (or box, or something) and Pete will randomly draw the winner. We will announce the winner on this weeks show.

Podcast members, Dreams Unlimited Travel agents/employees and those who already won a cruise are not eligible.

We will be recording this weeks show on Tuesday 1/6/09 at noon.

Just to make sure everyone understands....any reservation for the podcast cruise (5/10/2009 - booked through Dreams Unlimited Travel) that has a deposit on it prior to Tuesday at noon is eligible for the drawing and to win the cruise.

While I'm a little disappointed that I can't win the trip (there is no way we could swing a cruise and our summer trip), I think this is fair, straight forward way to give away the last cruise. The generosity of DU is truly amazing.

I'm torn also.. Since we can't afford to do this cruise on top of our big cruise in late 2009 it makes me sad that we aren't eligible but I am happy for whoever wins cause it's a great prize. At least I get to cruise in November with my DH, DS and DSF :hug:

This will be our 15 year belated honeymoon, the first time away from our boys(14 & 11 years old), and something we have sacrificed many other things for. So very true- Kristen and I both made the leap to go on this cruise without our families, it is a stretch for both of us- but where there is a will there's a way:)
I do understand how others might be dissapointed, but they are very generous to be doing this and they know many of us have sacrificed to be able to be there

In my opinion, I would have preferred to see the cruise awarded to (potentially) someone who did not already have plans to go.

On the other hand, finding out that your upcoming vacation is going to be free is certainly not a bad prize either, just a little different, in some ways. But, it's no less generous of Dreams Unlimited, or anything like that.

Normally giveaways like this have a "no purchase necessary" method of entering to avoid the sweepstakes being an illegal lottery. I have decided that we won't be giving one more cruise away. We have given away the original allotment we had and this was an 'extra' one I threw in at the last minute. So to avoid any more hurt feelings or concerns that we might be breaking the law the last cruise will not be given away.

I have a HUGE issue with your words "legitimate concern". Give me a break! I've seen your previous posts, so I know you listen to the Podcast. I'm just having a hard time wrapping my brain around someone who seems to be a faithful listener, but questioning the legitimacy of the what they can and can't do with their business. There seems to be a lot of controversy about how we’re giving away the last free podcast - some are saying we are being unfair, some are saying we are breaking the law.

To be honest what was supposed to be fun has now just turned out to be a royal pain.

I have decided that we won't be giving one more cruise away. We have given away the original allotment we had and this was an 'extra' one I threw in at the last minute. So to avoid any more hurt feelings or concerns that we might be breaking the law the last cruise will not be given away.

Wow...i am APPALLED!! Here DU is, organizing this entire podcast cruise for the listeners, losing money really because of all the events they are having...and then, they have GIVEN AWAY multiple cruises, which again, they would lose money on....all to show the listeners how much they appreciate us, want us to have a good time, etc. Now, they have done all this, and just as a whim, decide to get one last cruise away, just for the heck of it basically- and what is the reaction??!? People talking about how unfair it is to reward the people who can already afford to go on the cruise, insinuating there is some illegal activity going on by using that particular pool of people to select the winner, etc...just general sour grapes!!! DU does not OWE any of us ANYTHING!! They are a business, and can choose to spend their money however they would like....if it is to give me a free trip to McDonalds, so be it! Every I see the Podcast team having to deal with 't3h dramaz' associated with their giveaways and events, it makes me feel so bad for them. Hearing Pete talk about what John had to deal with with Disney Events for TSM made me cringe. We were lucky enough to win one of the dining review contests and eat with John and Kevin and they were both so wonderful and incredibly gracious... I find it very frustrating to hear that they're frustrated by trying to do nice things for people.

So disappointed - not because there's no chance to win a cruise but just because something so wonderful turned vicious. I was leery when posters started asking EXACTLY how is it being done, etc. We 'know' the Podcast Team well enough to want to cruise with them, then why can't we just trust them? Why micro-plan everything? Has Pete not already proven thru the years that he is a man of utmost integrity?

Let's remember the fun and spontaneity we had when Rex won his cruise. There was so much joy in that sharing spirit that even tho we had no chance of getting it we were still so happy for someone else (and at that point IIRC it was before his infamous camo bikini pic and was still relatively unknown). I followed that thread and LMAO!

John, Pete, DU, Podcast team - pls know many of us are thankful of what you do, regardless of whether it involves prizes or not. Your generousity is always appreciated. :grouphug:

When I first read this thread I was, of course, a bit bummed because I knew that I would not be able to win the last cruise. It just wasn't in the budget to book it. Hmmmm....I have so much to say...When I logged off about 5 hours ago this thread was only 5 pages long lol....

FIRST and FOREMOST......Podcast crew. All you do is appreciated. A lot. By everyone, I'm sure. Now while I surely can't ASSUME anyone's intent, I can say that those who voiced concerns did so for their own reasons, but that doesn't necissarily mean that they don't appreciate what is going on. Just trying to look on both sides of the coin. I didn't pay to go on the cruise, couldn't afford it, so yeah I was a little bummed, but I had my WDW trip in Septmeber so I figure I'm good for a year ;) and I was going to be happy to see someone win one. It's always nice to see people happy unexpectedly.

Secondly, I am sorry that something joyful like giving a cruise away had to get ugly, I feel bad and I didn't even do anything. I don't think anyone wanted it to get ugly, probably not even the posters who voiced their concerns, however accusatory they may have been.

THIRDLY AND SO IMPORTANTLY....No one hates you DisneyLily.....in fact, I was really touched by the post you left...probably because I feel the same way. C'mon people, please let's not fight...I like that you are compassionate about things, and I love reading your posts. :hug:

I am sad that a cruise won't be given away though, love to see people happy.

I can totally understand John and that he pulls back the last Give Away Podcast. It's his right to do so and he is right by doing it.

It's not a defense for danv3 but....
It was not only him that was complaining and being an a** about it.
There were a lot of people complaining that they thought it was not right how they were giving away this cruise.
At page 5 danv3 made his comment but before that there were a bunch of selfish people that complained....

This must be fun, this is the DIS and Dreams give something away, just be happy for somebody else, just don't be selfish just once.....

Late to the party, but commenting anyway.

I am not a lawyer, I don't even play one on TV ;) ;) but here's what I know. I enter sweepstakes and contests as a hobby. Sweepstakers are even more nuts that Disney fans, and they are all over rules and laws and all that stuff. They can get fanatical, and it can get ugly.

The laws for contests and giveaways in Florida are more strict that in other parts of the country. The lawmakers are trying to protect their citizens from fake contests. A lot of sweepstakes and giveaways will say void in FL and NY, bacause those states have more strict laws that make it a pain for sponsors to run. To avoid all that, they just make it void there.

Our beloved crew is not a big company running a big national sweepstakes. They just want to do something nice, but somebody was bound to jump on it and cry foul. I do NOT think that the OP was trying to stir up trouble at all, but trying to keep our Crew out of trouble. I'm sorry that it turned out so badly for everybody here.

Not to be a party pooper, but does this seem kind of "wrong" to anyone else? Normally giveaways like this have a "no purchase necessary" method of entering to avoid the sweepstakes being an illegal lottery. I assume no regular listener will report them, but I would hate to see Dreams get in trouble with law enforcement when they're just trying to give something away!

There seems to be a lot of controversy about how we’re giving away the last free podcast - some are saying we are being unfair, some are saying we are breaking the law.

To be honest what was supposed to be fun has now just turned out to be a royal pain.

I have decided that we won't be giving one more cruise away. We have given away the original allotment we had and this was an 'extra' one I threw in at the last minute. So to avoid any more hurt feelings or concerns that we might be breaking the law the last cruise will not be given away.

I saw the sour grapes on this thread yesterday - and I stand by that assessment of what it was, regardless of the political correctness that has tried to permeate this thread since then - but hesitated to post in response to it because I couldn't think of a way to do it without getting nasty.

EVERYONE had a chance to win a cruise MANY times..... all they had to do was call in or email the show (or go search Universal like Rex ;) ) THAT was the no purchase necessary part.........

I am no lawyer but i look at it this way......for a giveaway to be legal you have to also make a prize (one) available under no purchase necessary they gave a way MORE prizes under the sweepstakes (pick a number) requiring no purchase and planned on only giving ONE away to someone that was paying for a cruise...... Seems more generous than other sweepstakes!

Disney does it everyday..... they chose a park visitor that has PAID to enter...... they also chose a winner that enters the sweepstakes (probably only one), that makes it legal......

OK I have rambled on and on but there are a lot of us not going but you don't see us pitching a hissy fit calling foul. :confused3

This news that the cruise won't be given away really saddens me. Although I would live to join you all, it just won't seem possible this year, so I would not have been eligible to get the free cruise anyway.

It's a shame that this country has become so worried about lawsuits and not doing what's right.

I too am one of those listeners a little disappointed it had to go this far. Honestly, I thought this was a brilliant way of giving away a cruise. A nice reward for someone who has supported the team and Dreams Unlimited. I can completely understand why John would get so frustrated to shut down the whole contest. I probably would have done the same thing. I never took this gesture as anything other than the Podcast team and Dreams Unlimited doing something nice for someone who has booked a cruise with them. I guess that just leaves us all paying for a cruise we were willing to pay for in the first place. It's unfortunate it has had to turn into a bit of a sour situation and I feel for the team....especially John.

Count me in with the hundreds of others that thank you guys and appreciate all you do for your listeners. I promise you it doesn't go unnoticed. Keep up the good work and try not to let this scenario spoil things. See you on the cruise....free or not.

Going through life I've met some generous people, but what Dreams and the podcast crew have done for us is beyond generous. They've greatly exceeded my expectations in everything they've done for us.

Not only have they provided us with material things like prizes and "Chauchskees" (sp), they've most importantly given us friendship, and a forum to make friends. I think for some people to question the legitimacy of what the crew is doing in regards to prizes is flat wrong. It tells me you don't know the crew, Dreams Unlimited, or these boards very well. They are all about friendship, compassion, and sharing.
