Do you wear 'em? Why or why not????
How about a hat???
Ever wonder why people do?????
Or don't????
I now wear gloves. I get poison ivy at least once a season......from regular ivy....I'm that allergic.
I hate traditional gloves....I've been doing the latex glove thing. I can still feel what I'm doing and not transmit that lovely oil to my body.
Though the ivy does have a way of smacking me in the face every so often.
Maybe a stocking over the face would help! :p
So give us your tips, your hints and your stories.....
To glove or not to glove.....
THAT is the question!

I wear gloves when pruning roses or when digging or hoeing for extended periods of time. Otherwise, I like to get the dirt under my nails! Honestly, I find it hard to weed etc with a gloved hand.
I don't wear a hat in the garden. I should. I just do not have any great hats that I want to wear.

If I am doing pruning or muddy work I wear gloves otherwise I like to play in the dirt! My Grandmother used to wear a hat, long sleeved shirt over her work dress (a lady never wore pants!) and gloves. She was an avid gardener and had several very large beds we had to tend every morning. She said a "lady" never had tanned skinned or rough hands! :) I miss my Grandmother but boy, would she be fussing at me with my tanned, rough hands and not only do I wear pants but...shorts too!

I always wear gloves when planting flowers etc. in case I come across a worm! And I will often wear them when doing a lot of raking to prevent blisters. Dh brings me home heavy duty ones with suede palms from work, because they last longer.
As far as a hat, I 'try' to remember to wear one!

I have to throw out all my gardening gloves. The mice made themselves at home in the garden shed this past winter and nibbled little holes in the fingertips! I usually buy at least a half dozen pairs a season, and wear them about 75% of the time.
I buy hats too, but almost always forget to put one on!
Tiggerkeeper, what a great story about your Grandmother!! :) My Grandmother also wore dresses when she gardened. :)
Gina, going around with pantyhose over your head is either going to get you put in a special "facility", or arrested.......LOL! :p

You can count me in as a glove-wearer. I'm such a novice at gardening that I'm still getting manicures! I have a few pairs, but my favorite pair has sort of a rubbery texture.
No way on the hat though...all obvious medical evidence aside, I still enjoy a tan! I go down to Florida about 4 times a year to visit my grandmother. While I'm there I get her yard in order. She used to worry that I was spending my vacation time working, but I finally convinced her that it's a great way for me to get sun and to not have to sit still (torture for the putterers of the world).

Glove wearer here!! Cotton kind that have been dipped into some type of rubber substance. This substance allows me to get a great grip on my tools, etc. Since my beds are so new (1 year) weeds have not been a real issue as of yet. What few I do find usually come right out, roots and all. I wear the gloves more for blister protection, splinter protection, etc.
Gina I'm a receptionist at a very busy beauty salon. We probably do between 600 to 700 clients a week. Being a gardener you know it very difficult to keep your hands clean. Yes I need to wear gloves. Do I always "no"
The first things people notice is your hands, this can be a problem if your a gardener. There is only one solution, lots of manicures, dark polish and a good scrub brush.

I always say..."Spring is here when I have poison ivy".
I don't wear gloves. I need to feel what I am doing and with small hands I haven't found a pair of gloves that I like.
I don't wear a hat..I have been thinking about getting one though.

GLOVES: I wear gloves! I wear gloves mowing, raking, weeding, digging, etc. Just feels right. I tried last year the latex gloves but my hands got too sweaty inside. This year I bought a six-pack of gloves from Sam's Club and they are kinda like what RyanPatricksMom described: cloth inside but rubbery texture outside. I like these gloves alot and they come in great colors!!! I get comments all the time (Hey Rose, I've heard of a green thumb... but red hands???)
HATS: When mowing the lawn, I wear a little soft baseball type of cap (says "Gemini" on it, don't ask me why, I'm a Taurus. Actually, I think it came from some sort of music recording mixing equipment my son got). I wear the hat simply to keep my hair out of my face.

NO Hats for me, I despise wearing hats at any time but, in early spring I do have to wear my bug netting from the black flies they are nasty here in NH.
I do wear my mud gloves though they are the only glove I found that I absolutely love. I feel as though I don't have a glove on. In fact they are the only glove I ever bought that has lasted more than one season. On the third season.
I usually wear long pants till the real heat of summer to many tics.
