Due to the SPG's overwhelming popularity on the Dolphin tips/hints thread, we thought it best to devote a separate thread specifically to this topic only. There are so many Starwood "experts" who have been kind enough to share their wealth and knowledge and past experiences with the program, and we are eternally grateful to you all!

O.k., who wants to go first?

A very good place to start! ;) For those who haven't a clue what we're talking about - here's the link to the Starwood Preferred Guest web site: www.spg.com

Pay special attention to the "member benefits" and "earn and redeem Starpoints" sections at the top of the page.

Sorry Joanne...I didn't realize you had started a thread on this subject until I posted it! (This is what lack of sleep renders...) Please, disregard my thread (I attempted to delete it...but could not). My apologies again....DF99:(

Lisa, since no one has posted on your thread - I'm surprised you can't delete it. In any event - why not copy and paste what you posted there on THIS thread - because it would make a great intro!

I too can not believe I'm unable to delete this message...no one has posted. I attempted immediately...when I noticed this thread. The error notice alerted me I "lacked the authority" to delete it! LOL...How can this be, I started the darned thing!? Feels like a Monday today....

*Starwood Preferred Guest Question And Answer/tips/info (spg: Wdw Dolphin/swan).

"HEAR YE, HEAR YE, the FIRST MEETING of the SPG POINT-CHASERS is about to begin...do we have a quorum? Anyone have any SPG (Starwood Preferred Guest) questions to add to this sparkling new thread?

For those just checking in, the SPG is affiliated with the WDW DOLPHIN/SWAN resort properties after an acquisition in 1998/99. Previously, these properties were owned by Sheraton & Westin respectively. Starwood corporation purchased all properties owned by Westin, Sheraton, and other resort companies. Many of the resorts retained the names of "Westin" & "Sheraton", for familiarity purposes. All of these resorts are now owned and operated by STARWOOD Corporation. Both Westin & Sheraton had preferred frequent guest programs, but none with the capability/possibility of the STARWOOD program. The DOLPHIN/SWAN are the only ON-SITE Disney Resort Properties with a FREQUENT GUEST REWARD PROGRAM. Feel free to address any/all queries you may have regarding "SPG" on this forum.

Lisa...you may not be able to delete it, but you can edit the subject line to read..."Moderator please delete this." That solves the problem.

Great job Joanne. If anyone has questions for how to rack up points...ask away.

We also should tell people about some of the current promotions that can help people staying at the Swan or Dolphin...

If you already are a member and would like to spend some points, click here

If you'd like to use a credit card to get points, try this

Jen80370, You're my hero! All you guys here are.

I just got caught up in all this Dolphin/Starwood business about 6 weeks ago. Got my SPG membership, then my SPG AMEX, made ressies (standard rm) at Dolphin, got my SPG Gold membership upgrade. As of next month should have about 5000 points racked. Unfortunately, have to wait until November for my trip but then, lots of time for more points!

Questions for Jen and the rest of the SPG Pros:

1. Jen, your upgrade to the Corner King, was that with points? How many per night? Was that the 750pts mentioned on earlier posts? And you called Dolphin Reservations direct to do that? Didn't have to wait till check in to do that as an Instant Award? Is a month out about the best time for that?

2. Is the Starwood special (one room at 159/2nd at 100) something very new? Believe it's for stays through 9/30. Any speculation of extending or other special offers? Have there been past off season specials?

Thanks all.
May the 'points' be with you...:D

Does anyone know how much it is to upgrade to concierge from regular room in points? Or any other upgrades of room size/location?

Thanks

Are there any instant award available at the Swan? What are they they? Thanks for any info.:D

Yes, hightown...there have been off-season specials every year! Jsut check the website periodically for the new rates and dates. Last holiday Season was wonderful, as with the special rates SPG offered bonus points for each eve (Sun-Thurs)! This was incentive enough to FORCE me to go more than once..LOL.

As for the King room, Jen should be on Wall street peddling stocks! She is amazing, and secured it all w/o breaking a mere bead of perspiration. Jen can better explain this...but I know she took advantage of the cash & points promo too. Jen? Calling Jen?! She must have her head in the closet & her hands in the suitcase...:D

Mike, all points equirements vary according to the accomodations you desire. Club Level/suites/etc. are all accessible using points. What kind of room or ammenities were you thinking of reserving?

Swan...The only instant award available at the Swan (which I know of) is the dining certificate (redeemable at any/all Dolphin/Swan restaurants w/exception of Shula's). Is this what you were asking?

Hightown-thanks so much for the sweet encouragement. I hope the DH and DS know how good they have it when we check in...

I took about a year and a half and accumulate a total of about 40000 points. I only had one weekend trip to NYC in this, but due to a heavenly configuration of the stars, I had horrendous service at a W in Manhattan and was credited a nice sum of points for my trouble. It made me want to find all the "bad" Starwoods I could and rack up more points. :) Anyway, first I used those points for the Cash and Points deal, which is $60 a night plus 4000 points. So my eight night stay has five nights paid for that way. The other three are attributed to the teacher rate.

As for the room upgrade, I called the Dolphin hotel directly and asked for reservations. Here is the kicker....I could do this because I made my INITIAL reservation at the hotel directly. If I had used the website or the Starwood number, I would've had to go through Starwood...and I would've had to wait until five days before my arrival.

Once I got on the phone with Paul (my new best friend), I explained to him that Starwood had sent me to him, because of the direct reservation. I explained that I was using points to upgrade from a standard view to a resort view with balcony. He very sweetly told me that this upgrade is considered a level 2 upgrade (1250 points per night) as opposed to club level, which is a level 1 upgrade (750 points per night). I told him that I was aware of that. Then I (very sweetly and coyly...I might add) said "umm, Paul....any chance I can block one of those corner king rooms with the two balconies?" (imagine eyelashes batting) He said, "Wow! You did your homework didn't you?" I assured him I had, and that I had been banking points for about 18 months. It took him a few minutes because he had to get Starwood on the phone to deduct my points. He also had to find me a floor with a corner king as well as an empty room next to it (for my DS and friend).

He got back on the phone and said, "I hope you'll enjoy your corner king. I can't guarantee which view or floor you'll have, because things are always changing, but you definitely have an executive king and a neighboring room." Is there anything else I can do for you? I answered, "Well, you got #3 on my alltime list. What can you do about world peace and thin thighs?" After he laughed out loud, I wished him a HAPPY day...as he had done for me, and proceeded to dance around my house like this. :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

I hope this helps you all get the rooms and vacations you dream of.

As for the current promotion, I am not sure of the details...maybe Nancy or Joanne can fill in the gaps?

DF99, thanks for the plug about Wall Street...but I think we should open a travel agency instead. :)

I'm answering my own question from the Swan/Dolphin thread. My DH checked out of a Westin on May 11th, and the 500 bonus points for booking the reservation online were credited on May 15th! He'll return to the same Westin next weekend, so I'll be looking for those bonus points the middle of the following week!

I can't wait to see the points posted for our most recent SPG AMEX bill, and the 500 bonus points X 2 for my DH's and my recent stays at Starwood properties that were charged to the card! LOVE the points! :D

I am trying to get myself educated about the merits of the Starwood program
and I continue to be slow on the learning curve. I am signed up and busy
collecting points with my AMEX card, etc.

I have the following questions:

1. We will arrive in Orlando at 10:50 p.m., Monday, July 29. This means we won't likely check in until at least midnight. I fear the room selection will be
skimpy "left-overs" and thus my expectations for getting a free upgrade just
for being a Starwood member are minimal. So, should I use points ahead of
time to secure a better room? If so, how?

2. What is the chief difference between a category 1 and category 2 upgrade?

3. How tough is it to upgrade to a junior suite? Concerned about space (family of 5)

4. Totally unrelated question--Has anyone stayed in a Starwood hotel in Minneapolis? I've identified the participating hotels but don't know much about their respective quality.

Thanks for any info you provide. I'd be lost without these boards.

I am a SPG member. Staying at Swan June 14-22. Booked over the phone to a central #. Paid for water view. Requested non-smoking. I want to request a recently refurbished room. I don't have any points yet. Should I (& could I) request something else(balcony, non connecting rooms, ???)? I'm in the dark concerning how this works. I was going to send in my requests via swandolphin.com. Is that the correct way to go about it?

Fargoman,

Don't check in on the 29th! Book a room at the Sheraton Suites at the airport, it will save you some money and get 500 points if you book it online. Check in the morning of the 30th relaxed that way. Not to mention it counts as another *stay* if you are trying to hit an elite level this year.

FM: That was excellent advice if you are trying to accumulate points (Sheraton)...
I may be wrong here, but I think if you have a definitive request, the room is locked in right then, unless you are dealing with an upgrade. A suite is an excellent example of this.

I will share my own experience rather than try to answer each question...we have only had SPG for a year; when we first booked we had very few points, but by the time of our trip, it had been upgraded to gold as DH travels frequently (but we all know from Jen there are multiple other ways to obtain points!).

We originally booked a junior suite. These go early, I'd never count on an upgrade here..we also have five in our family...because we decided we wanted ground level, I called back to cancel the junior suite and book two connecting/adjoining rooms, with the specific request "ground level, poolside, nonsmoking".. as we had been in this area on our last trip. She told me this was an upgraded room (water view) and because of Starwood, it was honored. We had a discount on the room through Disney Club. We were also repeat customers which they indicated on the reservation. We arrived at 8 pm and had no problem with this request as the room had been blocked off. Now, I know my request wasn't popular as a tiny percentage request ground level; I assume this was in our favor.

Jimmie C: I think others would agree that sending requests via the S/D website isn't that helpful. Give them specifics such as "east wing, epcot view, fifth floor, nonsmoking...." when booking as they will indicate it on the original reservation. People on these boards have posted that if you call really close to your stay (a week out maybe? not sure of exact time) that they just might reveal your room number, or at least location to you. Do your homework carefully by checking out Glo's website and all of the Dolphin threads you can get your hands on as far as specifically requesting an area that will suit your family's needs.

They are in the process of renovating the rooms within the next year; it wouldn't hurt to request this. Regarding upgrades, it definitely depends on availability of rooms, i.e., how crowded the resort is at the time. It is never something I would count on, despite Starwood status. For example, when we checked in I heard a couple request an upgrade (this was April vacation week) and they were emphatically but politely told, "the resort is full, we have no upgraded rooms". This is a convention resort, and if there are multiple conventions going on at once (like we had) the chances are minimal.

I hope this has helped a little, my knowledge of Starwood is limited.

Thanks Dreamflight99. That was what I wanted to know (was hoping to get a massage for DH on fathers day).
I have another question or two:o. I have a lake view, what would the next upgrade be? How many points is that? We are staying ten nights and I do not have enough points to get an upgrade for all the nights, will they let me upgrade for some of the nights than switch to a lake view? We will be arriving on 6/7 and I was thinking of upgrading at that time since it was not real busy last year. Do you agree? Thanks ............Gail :D

Jen80370

I know that when you start at standard view...upgrade to Club level is 750 points per night. An upgrade to Blacony is 1250 per night, and Suites are 10,000 a night. Hope this helps.

Ok I have a dumb question - is Club level the same as Concierge? Do the Swan and Dolphin have food offerings in Concierge as the other Deluxe hotels in Disney do?? Thanks in advance if anyone knows!

Renee

NancyIL
05-17-2002, 09:17 AM
Yes, the Club level at Swan/Dolphin = Concierge. Food is served in the Club lounge from 7-10 a.m. (fruit, pastries, cereal) and from 5-7 p.m. (cheese and crackers, veggies and dip).

Thanks NancyIL for your fast response!
I have a gold Starwood card - does that give an automatic upgrade to club level? Also does your level reset every year? I reached gold level because I did some business traveling at my old job last year and I managed to transfer my clickrewards points before they shut down. I was hoping I would be able to keep my status now that I reached it!

Hi,

My brother works for the Westin here in Boston. He was over the other day an said that he could get me a discount on our upcoming Dolphin trip. I gave him our dates and said okay go for it. We already had a 50% rate using AAA $162.50 for a king bed, limited view room.

Today I signed on to the Sheraton website to check on my ressie and it is still there.

I went to checkout dates for our trips in 2003, I know we have not even gone on this trip yet:D , and it looks like the following codes are now in my profile. Does anyone know what they mean?

Under my name is reads "Preferred Plus". Anyone know what that means? When I clicked to check rates at the Dolphin in May of 2003 the field titled "SET or corporate account number" was defaulted to 3456. Does anyone know what that field is/what does it mean. It will not let me book online it says to call for rates.

Do you think this is becuase of trying to use the employee discount? Any insight will be appricated.

Regarding your question on automatic upgrade to club level with gold status...

We also have gold and what they offered us upon arrival (April, 2002) was waiving the resort fee (meaning it would be complimentary). Our room was an upgraded view (this was handled when we made our reservation, it was an automatic upgrade). You may have to use points up front to insure club level, but others may have a better insight into this. ..nancy, DF??

NancyIL
05-17-2002, 10:51 AM
Tiffany - you must have the Starwood AMEX card, because cardholders get the "Preferred Plus" designation. If you call Starwood and tell them you have the Platinum SPG card, they should upgrade you to GOLD status!

Our AMEX is in my DH's name, so when I check rates using his Starwood number, it also shows "SET 3456." Just click on the "change" button and erase the SET number. Then you can check the promotional, AAA, or government rates. Sometimes the lowest rates are shown when you leave that space blank!

Special rates like the Starhot (for employees) probably don't show up in the system. Find out if your brother used the same confirmation number you received with your original AAA reservation. The last thing you need is TWO reservations!

Renee - I believe you need to requalify for gold status every year. Your Starwood card should have an expiration date on it. You need 10 stays or 25 nights to maintain your gold status: http://www.starwood.com/preferredguest/benefits/benefits_landing.html

As a gold member, you will be upgraded to a "preferred" room when available. You get the best available room and club level privileges when you are a Platinum member (20 stays/40 nights).

Tiffany

Thanks NancyIL. I had applied for the AmEx Starwood and I did get a call the other day telling me I was approved but because I do not have the card yet I forgot about it. Thanks that does make sense.

I have to call my brother and follow up on the Starhot rate. He is not traveling with us but he insited that he could get an employee rate anyway. Well, I have to see what happens.

Thanks again for the quick response.

Ah to have an employee discount! Tiffany you are a lucky one. Great answers Nancy and Joanne...I too get the 3456 code and find when I erase it I get better rates (sometimes)...I usually try it both ways to cover all bases. As for Club Level, it is only guaranteed with platinum, but they have been known to be generous to gold members, depending on how booked they are. To ensure it, it is 750 points a night.

Good luck!

I participated in the Inside Flyer promotion to get 2,500 Starwood bonus points. Our first issue of Inside Flyer magazine arrived today (May issue), and it looks like it will be GREAT for coordinating all of our American Airlines miles and Marriott/Starwood/Holiday Inn/Hilton points. It's not too late to take advantage of the offer for $59.95: http://www.insideflyer.com/starwood/productnav.cgi?ID=POU5-38AAAEAACr8gg8&FILE=infoifa.htm

I just read in Inside Flyer magazine that the Kellogg's/American Airlines promotion is STILL ongoing until Nov. 30th! Look for specially-marked boxes of certain Kellogg's cereals (Miniwheats, Low-fat Granola, Cracklin Oat Bran, Complete Oat Bran, Complete Wheat Bran, Mueslix, All Bran, and Just Right), as well as Nutri-Grain Bars/Twists/Squares and Pastry Swirls - featuring The American Dream American Airlines Promotion.

Nanc--since you appear to be a frequent flier expert, I have a question. You have to actually transfer your points to American correct? Aprox how many miles for one round trip in U.S. coach ticket? And aprox how many starwood points would that be?

Also if you didn't notice If you update your hilton hhonors acount profile by june 30th you get an instant 1,000 points go to hiltonhhonrs.com/profile. I just called them to stay for our trip to DW on points in GA, and was mentioning to the woman that it was a shame that I have to call to use my points, because I would book online for the 1,000 pt bonus. Guess what? She said that is rotten and gave me the 1,000 points. I was in shock, and while thanking her, she upgraded me to Silver. I usually am at silver but it expired with the new year and I hadn't gotten there yet.

NancyIL

Shelly - thanks for the Hilton Honors tip!

It requires 25,000 American Airlines miles for one free coach class ticket within the continental United States. Starwood points transfer 1:1 to American, but you get 5,000 bonus miles from Starwood when you transfer 20,000 Starpoints! So - 20,000 Starwood points = 25,000 American Airlines miles! :)

Way to go Shelly and thanks for the HHonors tip.

We also received our first issue of inside flyer today, Nancy. Thanks for pointing out that A/A - Kellogs promo and glad to see that it will be offered through Nov 30th. The promo is mentioned on p. 57 in small print. Five certificates (off the boxes) will net you 500 bonus miles! Eat up folks - :)

Most of the other airlines are also offering promos (in this section) such as flight, hotel, car rental, credit card and misc bonuses. What a great publication!

Keep up the good work points experts and thanks for starting this thread! ;)

While at the grocery store this afternoon, I checked out the cereal aisle! Sure enough, the Kellogg's cereals listed had the American Airlines certificates on the boxes, but you have to send in TEN (10) certificates at a time to get 1,000 miles, and the expiration date is now January 31, 2003. It's a good deal if you would've bought the cereal anyway - especially if it's on sale and/or you have a coupon. I didn't see AA certificates on any of the Nutri-Grain products at this particular store.

Hi All,

So my Starwood Preferred Guest Platinum AmEx Card came today. The brochure that came with the card indicates that I will be receiving a "50%-off leisure certificate, towards an eligible stay at a participating hotel or resort charged to your Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card."

Has anyone gotten one of these yet? Do you think I would be able to apply this to my upcoming Dolphin stay?

NancyIL

Tiffany - the certificate gives you 50% off the rack rate - so it's no better at the Swan/Dolphin than the Disney Club/Entertainment/AP discount.

Tiffany:

I got the same card today, yipeee! I don't see why you can't apply it, and funny you mention it because I had used the Disney Club discount for our April trip, and I thought, next time why not use this discount instead? (except the DC reaped its own benefits with 20% off dining, regular golf and mini golf, water rentals, etc.). This is something I think I would probably call the Dolphin with to confirm ahead of time, or simply ask the reservations agent, so they can "lock in" your rate ahead of time...

The real bummer of this card was that if you transfer your other debt, i.e., credit cards at 2.9% interest, it won't gain you any Starwood points, LOL. Now THAT would be a great benefit!

My rate is already 50% using a AAA discount maybe I will be able to use it towards a non-planned trip somewhere closer to home.

Hi LBYC-19,

Thanks. I am already getting 50% off with a AAA discount on my upcoming trip. Maybe I will be able to use it on another trip. I believe you can get the 20% off dinning by just having a DC card I do not think you actuly have to book the room using the DC discount. I am planning on using the DC card to get the 20% meals on our upcoming trip.

Thanks for the info.

NancyIL
05-17-2002, 07:07 PM
Tiffany is correct. The 20% Disney Club discount at Swan/Dolphin restaurants (excluding Shula's) has nothing to do with the rate you pay for your room. You don't even have to be a hotel guest to get the discount - just show your DC card to the cashier/waitress.

Receive 20% off dining at the Walt Disney WorldŽ Swan and Dolphin. Present your Disney Club membership card at any Walt Disney WorldŽ Swan and Dolphin restaurant (excludes Shula's Steak House) and receive a 20% discount.
For reservations, call (407) 934-1609 or visit their website at www.swandolphin.com for more information.

This offer is valid May 1 through September 30, 2002, and November 1 through December 23, 2002.

You guys are both right! I guess I should have separated my thoughts when I wrote them...what I meant was that maybe next time I'd use Starwood discount to book the room INSTEAD of DC...(in other words, cancel my DC membership when it expired).. BUT I found it way too valuable when I was there with the discounts that I had listed (dining, golf, etc.) , so I'd want to hold onto it...Sorry I did not make myself clear, which is what happens when you are on the DIS too much!

just got my starwoods american express card. did i read another post right that i won't get points for balance transfers? Is it 1 point for every dollar spent?

NancyIL

Yes, you will earn 1 point for every "eligible" dollar charged to the credit card - so that would exclude balance transfers. You should have received a little booklet with teeny tiny print that explains all the details! Be sure to notice the other perks of the card besides the Starwood points, such as shopping and travel benefits: http://www66.americanexpress.com/cards/Fmacfservlet?csi=6/0/b/3/0/134130631649/0/n&from=0

I booked the Dolphin a couple of months ago on a CC for our Oct. trip. I've just received my Starwood AMEX card. Should I get a new reservation on-line with the AMEX? or just leave my previous reservation and change the CC info?

Blade - here's what I'd do: call Starwood and ask if they will upgrade you to GOLD Preferred status because of your Platinum AMEX card. As a Gold Starwood member you'll get 3 points per hotel dollar spent rather than 2 points! You probably don't need to make any changes to your reservation. Just present your Starwood AMEX card at the time of check-in, and change your Starwood profile to reflect the new credit card. Also make sure your Starwood number is on your reservation, and charge all Swan/Dolphin meals to your room to get more points!

My spouse and I have just been through a major hassle with the Starwood Customer Service. We had linked several weeks ago, from their (Starwood) website to the American Express Website, applied and received the Starwood Preferred Guest Platinum American Express Card.

After our receiving our card, we called Starwood Customer Service to request an upgrade from our Starwood Preferred Plus status to Gold Preferred Status. They told us that you could NOT receive Gold Preferred Status with this card (the Starwood Prefered Guest Platinum American Express Card), but had to have a regular Platinum American Express Card.

Color me confused? What am I not understanding? I mean, we can certainly apply for a regular Platinum American Express Card, but it doesn't make any sense to me!(smile)

NancyIL
05-19-2002, 07:46 PM
Sounds like you got the run-around, Figaro! It doesn't make sense to me that a non-Starwood Platinum AMEX card would result in an upgrade but the Starwood Platinum AMEX card would not! Give customer service a chance to rectify the situation. It could be that Starwood's decision to upgrade their AMEX cardholders to Gold status was intended to be for a limited time only. I hope that is NOT the case!

Thanks Nancy! My spouse says he wants to wait a few days before he calls again (smile).

How many points does it take for an upgrade from a standard room to concierge? Don't know if that's how we want to "spend" our points, but thought I would check and see if anyone knows.

I can help you here as I just did this. I received my Am ex starwood in the mail day before yesterday, I called and activated, then proceeded to call starwood. I told the woman that answered that I saw online that I could get a complimentary upgrade to gold with my am ex.
She said you have am ex platinum, I said yes. She said do you have the code for the upgrade. I said no I didn't see anything but to call them. She said ok, you are now gold. I checked online and I am now gold. Just call again and get someone else.

Figaro...if at first you don't succeed...call back and try again. It took Nancy three tries before she got it. :)

As for Club/Concierge level....750 points a night.

Dead End Kid

First, thanks to all of you for posting such terrific Starwood info. We joined last year when we made our first trip to the Swan and now have a nice balance. However, I would very much like to upgrade to Club Level for our July 21 trip. I understand it is 750 points per night. I am 1,000 points shy of what I need!

I was thinking I could make up that difference with the Starwood AMX card, but since we are leaving in July, I don't have much time. My questions:

1) If you apply on-line, how long does it take for you to get your card? A week? 2 weeks? Several weeks?

2) Will I receive 1 Starwood point for EVERY charge I put on this card, no exception (I understand you will not get points for balance transfers and probably not for cash advances, which is fine). But will all other charges qualify?

3) How quickly are the points added to my Starwood account? At the end of each billing cycle? Or the end of each quarter?

4) We have been talking about getting a new computer system for several months, so I know once I get the card I can quickly purchase what I need and that will give me the points I am lacking. But I am unsure if I have enough time. What do you think?

5) I made my Swan reservations thru DreamsUnlimited and got the great gov rate. If I'm lucky enough to get the points I need, can I call the Swan directly (I believe 5 days before we arrive) and arrange for the upgrade?

Thanks again for all of your help. You might already know this, but I did find some new (at least to me) info about the Starwood program last night. I spent most of yesterday on the SPG site trying to figure out ways to earn points. I saw they had "transfer partners" and lots of info about turning Starwood points into airline miles. It also said that you could turn other programs into Starwood points.

Since I have plenty of Delta Skymiles and Continental One Pass miles I thought I had easily solved my point problem. It took me several tries, but I finally got a Starwood rep on the phone. Only to learn that the airline miles only work one way! You can turn Starwood into miles, but not miles into Starwood. Very disappointing!

Dead End Kid - I'd say it takes about 2 weeks to get your Starwood AMEX card once you apply, and the points for EVERY dollar charged are credited within a day or two of the end of the billing cycle. Have you considered the Inside Flyer magazine promo that gives you 2,500 Starwood points for a mere $59.95? http://www.insideflyer.com/starwood/productnav.cgi?ID=POjpq38AAAEAAAnYZJE&FILE=infoifa.htm

Jen80370

Starwood points earned with the Starwood AMEX card definitely count. I should've been more specific - I believe that points transferred from outside programs such as AMEX Membership Rewards and ClickRewards don't count towards the 5th night free.

We would like to get one of the Starwood AMEX cards so we can start getting points for all of his purchases and get rid of the Visa card. So here's the problem or question...we want to have the AMEX card in his name but our Starwood Preferred Guest card is in my name. Does anyone know if we would put me on as a joint applicant for the AMEX card if we could use my Starwood number on the application or, if not, is there anyway to combine our Starwood accounts after we get the AMEX card? We don't want to lose the points we have already accumulated on my Starwood card. Thanks for your help.

One last question: If I do get the points I need, what is the procedure for requesting the club level upgrade? Can I do that directly from the SPG site, or do I need to call the Swan?

points can be combined between a husband and wife if they have different account numbers with Starwood. Me and my husband do it all the time. Also I just made a reservation at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel in Niagara Falls Canada and we have 24,000 points approx. So I was able to book 3 nights using the following points, (very confusing) 8250 points + $250 Canadian per night for the first two nights and 7000 points + $250 Canadian. This is for a Residence Suite (700 SQ ft.), This odd arrangement came by my contacting the hotel directly and negoitianting the number of points and supplementing the number of points I needed for a room type with cash. First I made a booking with Starwood directly for the first two night and yhen I only had 7000 points left but I wanted another night so I asked Starwood to negoiate directly with the hotel directly to see if they would accept only 7000 instead of the required 8250 and they did. I have now been in contact with the General Manager and he helped me accomplish what I wanted to do even through I didn't have enough points. I am looking forward to this trip. I also have Platinum level status due to a promotion that they sent me about 4 months before the end of my Gold year membership was to expire, they told me I had to stay another two nights to get Platinum membership (many nights less then their usual requirement) and I was upgraded. Now I get Club level every time I stay. The Starwood program is the best wonderful people to work with when planning a vacation.

You guys finally got me to call and get the card. I'm just afarid it's too late to build up points for my trip next month. Oh well...I'm going to try to transfer my AM EX Rewards points to Starwood points so I can get the club level I'm dying for. I wish I had wised up a little sooner. I'm going to save a ton off of the Membership rewards annual fee. You'd think I would have caught on a little sooner. I kind of thought my hubby would be suspicious of another one of my schemes for points, upgrades etc....But when I floated the idea, he was fine with it.

I was told the card would arrive in 5-7 business days. I was approved right over the phone. It was so easy!

We are also considering Caesar's for a possible free weekend destination. KelliR, did you by chance inquire about the Cash & Points Awards Nights Promo? I'm curious if this would be honored at Caesar's. The SPG website only lists seven hotels nationally that are participating in this promo. The deal is 2,800 points and $45.00 or 4,000 points and $60.00 depending on what category the resort is. I'm guessing Caesar's would be a Cat. 4 or 5???

Thanks Nancy,

Yes, I am aware of the points swap value. That's one of the reasons this new card is such a better deal for me.

happytrails2u...I just called SPG to be sure I gave you the correct answer. Caesar's will only accept the 7,000 points per night, the "Cash & Points" promotion will not work at Caesar's.:( That is probably because Caesar's is not really a Starwood hotel...Starwood and Caesar's just work together with a reciprocal type agreement.

Thank you, KelliR - - I appreciate that. I had a suspician...although I was hoping, since they accepted Starwood Points for stays, that they might also accept this reward. Apparently this promo is very limited even within the Starwood Family. Have a great trip!

drsung, I happened to do a search on the SPG website to see if Starwood had properties in Nevada. When the search came up empty, I was prompted to call Starwood directly. I was a bit surprised to learn that Nevada does not. Perhaps it's a "gamimg" issue or sorts? Anybody know why? Anyway, during my conversation, the representative advised that Starwood has an agreement with Caesar's. If I understand correctly, you can still earn Starwood Points for your stay here.

Thanks for the help, everyone! My spouse called again tonight and was persistent with the Starwood Customer Service representative. The representative kept insisting that our Starwood Preferred Platinum American Express card did NOT qualify us to be upgraded to preferred gold status. But he said he would upgrade our status anyway because we were so adamant.

I have to admit that the entire process was pretty exhausting. We somehow or other have been on the mailing list for every single postcard promotion that WDW has for their resorts and I was seriously considering switching from the Swan to a Disney resort tonight.

Tomorrow we will give the Swan a call and see if any of the concierge rooms are handicap accessible.

Thanks again for the encouragement, as I don't think we would have kept trying (and succeeded) without you guys!

When we first got the Sheraton Starpoints credit card 2 years ago (before it was called the Starwood Preferred Guest card) - cardmembers were automatically made gold SPG members for the first year of card membership. With the Platinum Starwood card came "Preferred Plus" status - whatever that means.

I can't point to any place that says that you are "entitled" to gold status as a Starwood AMEX cardholder. Apparently they were upgrading cardholders to gold status without the hassle just a month or so ago - because they upgraded my DH when I asked. Since Figaro's DH had quite a time getting them to give him the upgrade to gold, it sounds like you could be in for a fight, though I hope that's NOT the case.

If you have elite status in another hotel chain's frequent guest program, send proof to Starwood and they will give you a complimentary upgrade to a comparable Starwood level. Again - I haven't seen this written on their site, but it has been noted here by "word of mouth."

I think what made the whole upgrade thing so confusing is that my spouse was told that ANY other platinum American Express card EXCEPT the Starwood Platinum American Express Card would qualify us for an immediate upgrade to gold status.

If we'd known that, we wouldn't have applied for the Starwood Platinum American Express as I routinely toss out mail from other Platinum American Express cards and (since we just bought a new car I know this) our credit rating is perfect we would have had NO problem qualifying for any credit cared we apply for(smile).

This is a Starwood question, but not Disney, so I'm not totally off topic, but please help guide me in where to look (I've exhausted means of web searches, etc.)

Has anyone ever visited a Starwood resort that was on a beach, but also with nightly activities that teens would like? I've tried Carribean, U.S. Virgin Islands, have ruled out Puerto Rico and Mexico..Hawaii too far away...help please, does Starwood have such a directory on line? The way their web site is set up, you have to key in your location, but I don't have a location yet, I NEED ONE!! As you guys know, I'm a little challenged in the computer literacy department.

Nancy, what if you make a purchase or a reservation with SGP Amex, then have to cancel? Do they credit your account initially, then cancel the points after? No, I'm not looking for a new way to get points...Jen, don't even THINK about it, lol.

zurgswife - I doubt that the teacher discount will disappear in 2003. Glo's FAQ shows the dates the discounts are in effect through January 2003, so I'm sure more dates will be added soon!

Joanne - sorry, I can't help you with the resort location. It sounds like it will be a wonderful vacation - wherever it is! :) Are you sure Puerto Rico is out? I've heard the Westin Rio Mar is lovely! :D

I've had lots of returns on credit cards that give points, miles, or rebates. For instance - if you paid a one-night deposit of $160 for the Dolphin, then cancelled your reservation, your account would show the credit of $160. If it was before the end of the billing cycle, you'd never get the points to begin with. If your credit was given months after paying the deposit, the $160 credit would be applied to whatever charges you made during that billing cycle, and your SPG points would be equal to the balance due. It's unlikely the points would be deducted from your account unless your credit card had been inactive for several months and you were due a credit.

I've got to book (frequent flyer) flights now for next April, but just can't decide....would rather do Disney again, but the family wants to go to a beach area :( Puerto Rico is beautiful, but so impoverished, I'd feel too guilty staying at the resort! There is so much for the teens to do at Disney, but only daytime activities at other resort locations..it's hard to get both.

I've got to give all of you so much credit for keeping up with this point thing, it's exhausting sometimes, but of course it pays off in the end with a vacation I know we'd otherwise never be able to take. Unfortunately, the family pays the price with poor DH doing all this business travel.

Puerto Rico is impoverished?
I better let my family there know that they are living improverished. Puerto Rico just like anywhere else has very expensive places you and I will never see and very bad places and everything in between (although I never saw any bad parts of Bermuda but thats a different story). So please don't generalize Puerto Rico as being improverished, as it is a part of our United States and has a different culture than here and what you might think of Puerto Rico you might be confusing with our parts of the Carribean. Puerto Rico has free public college and almost everyone attends, it has a rich heritage and is a proud part of our counrty. Puerto Rico is beautiful and it has some very wealthy parts and my family lives in a upper middle class area and I would hate for you to miss out a wonderful vacation because of your misconceptions.

LBYC-19

I certainly did not mean to offend anyone. You are absolutely correct in stating that there are impoverished areas EVERYWHERE in the world (and I'm sure even in Bermuda ). If you've seen some of my other posts, you'll see sometimes I type faster than I'm thinking and I should have prefaced it to read," the last time we were there, the area around the particular resort we stayed at was impoverished." We were told not to leave the resort at all. Not wanting to get into anything personal, I neglected to say DD is very sensitive and can hardly get through a ride into Boston without stopping to take care of the homeless, and I was more concerned about her--I didn't mean to attack Puerto Rico in general, it could be anywhere. Should have stuck with my original Disney plans!

I admit to this day that the resort in Puerto Rico we stayed at was the most beautiful place we have ever been on travel, including Hawaii. My sincere apologies.

I have a few questions concerening Starwood Gold Status.

I read the info on the spg.com site, and noticed at gold status you can earn 3 points for every $1 spent. Does that include items charged on the Starwood AMX?

There have been several posts about upgrading to gold status if you are a platinum AMX card holder. Hopefully, I will be receiving my Starwood AMX card shortly. It appears that some people have been easily upgraded after making a call to Starwood customer service, while others have needed to make numerous calls.

I figure it is certainly worth a few phone calls to for the change to gold once I get my card. But I would like to know where or what is the source of the information that entitles you to this upgrade? Was this on the AMX site? On the Starwood site? In printed literature from AMX? Printed literature from Starwood? Or was this something that someone on these boards discovered on their own?

I feel I have a better chance of getting this great perk easily if I sound knowledgable when I make my call.

Thanks!

I recently applied for and recieved a Starwood Amex card. As a result (I think) this week I was mailed a Starwood preferred + card to replace my regular Starwood card. Is there really any difference between a preferred and a preferred + card?

Thanks!!

Thanks for pointing out the bonus booking points: http://www.starwood.com/preferredguest/search/index.html

Bimmy56 - I don't know if Preferred Plus members get any extra benefits over the standard Preferred Guest. That may just be Starwood's way of distinguishing those who have the Starwood AMEX card.

Thanks for the bonus point info, Nancy. I just booked a Sheraton in NH on Sunday. I just got off the phone with Starwood, since they were unable to credit my account with the bonus 500, I had them cancel the ressie and rebooked it online (again) to take advantage of the 1000 point offer. Thanks, Patti:)

Hi, I have a ? about the bonus points promotion they are running now. Just two days ago I joined spg and have since made two reservations. Should my bonus points b/c I made the ressies online be credited to my account right away or do they show up after your stay?

Thanks so much!

They show up after your stay. You can't use them for your first reserved stay. If you made the reservation May 22 or later, you will receive 1000 bonus points plus hotel stay points to use for your second reservation, after which you will receive another 1000+ points to use on your third reservation, and so on, and so on.....:)

The pluto people...also, the Loews upgrade platinum (using SPG status) offers a bonus of 1000 AA points for first eve, 500 additional for each eve after this! I wish Starwood gave me 1000 for the first eve, and 500 each additional w/plat! I would have 13,000 points from my July visit alone! Ugh...maybe I should email and ASK them for this offer?! It never hurts to TRY (especially when I know how competitive these Frequent traveler programs have become!

I became a SPG member about 2 months ago but never received a card. I just called and the CSR said that I would not get a card until my first stay at a Starwood resort (Swan 6/11-15). Is this correct? I don't want to miss out on anything!

NancyIL

lynniepooh - the card itself isn't that important, as long as you have the number. Just make sure your Starwood number is on your Swan reservation so you'll get points for your stay. Don't forget to have any Swan/Dolphin restaurant meals charged to your room to get even MORE Starwood points!

I had the same experience. I never received my card. Now just upgraded to gold and would like the card in my possession for my trip in June. I did however print a card from the web site which will be an adequate substitution. I also called Loews yesterday to see if they would match my gold SPG status with theirs. They said to fax a copy of my card to their cust service # and they would do it.
So true what you say on these boards.....
You never know until you ask,.....nothing ventured nothing gained, ....etc, etc.
Many thanks to Jen, DF, LBYC, and countless others for the wonderful advice. Couldnt have done it without you.
Btw, my DH is very impressed with my newfound knowledge of the workings of all of these programs and the possibilities!!!!
My trip is almost here!!!! Better start stocking up the essentials!!

Hi, could someone tell me what kind of information is in the Inside Flyer magazine. I looked on the web page, but it was not very descriptive of what kinds of information it contains. Also, is it a Starwood publication or an independent travel magazine?

Also are there any other perks associated with signing up for the Inside Flyer program besides the 2500 points. I'm considering signing up, but just would like more information. Thanks so much!

PS - This is a great thread!

Inside Flyer is an independant magazine, published by frequent-flyer guru - Randy Petersen. It's a great resource for learning about all the frequent-flyer/frequent-guest programs. The May issue has a special report on the Freddie Awards - given to the best frequent-flyer and frequent-guest programs. The magazine and book may seem a little pricey at $59.95, but it's about the cheapest way to earn 2,500 Starwood points you'll find!

I applied for Starwood membership last year and also never received a card (though it said on the website that I would). But I did exactly what Nancy suggested when we went to the Swan last Auguest - I made sure they had my Starwood number listed on the reservation. I also double checked when I arrived. The points were easily and promptly credited to my account.

Early this year I received my first Starwood statement. I had a question and when I called customer service I mentioned that I'd never gotten a card. I asked if they would please send me one and I received it several weeks later.

Also - would like to thank everyone for the Starwood AMX information. I applied on-line on Monday evening. Received a call at work on Thursday afternoon - they told me I was approved but just wanted to verify some info (like name, address, SS #). The person I spoke with was very nice. He said the card should arrive within 2 weeks.

We already have several major items picked out to buy (new fridge, B-B-Q - upgrade to the computer system). It won't take us long at all to reach our needed 1700 points!

Once I have the necessary points the next step will be to figure out how to get the upgrade to Swan Club Level for our July trip!

Two days ago...and placed it on my SPG AMEX! (White Glove Treatment!) I made close to an additional 6000 points, not including the excursions ($700) and the down pmt posted last fall of $600! (I have the cash to pay for this cruise...but why not charge it--then pay the cash to AMEX?!) This Disney Cruise has netted some SERIOUS points...so, along with the other 5+weeks of our sojourn~just think of all the points (rental cars, AP's, resorts, all misc.)! My head is "swimming" with SPG point-fever. It makes spending $$ so much easier, almost pleasurable (as Jen has been saying all along...I recall the car repair cost which was paid w/a smile due to SPG points!). Before the AMEX SPG (& skymiles card)...this money was expended in waste. Now, it nets us FREE resort stays, etc. I even paid my cable bill with AMEX this week. Now, if only my house payment could be charged, I'd be all set. Presently, I'm a happy camper!:D

I agree with you Peter Pirate. I also just recently received my AmEx Starwood Platinum and read the material and also went over to the Starwood Preferred Guest website and there is no mention that an AmEx Starwood Platinum card gets you upgraded to Gold status. Based on this I have personally decided not to call and ask for an upgrade to Gold Status because I believe I am not entitled to that status based on everything I have read.

Shelly,

This link is for the regular AmEx Platinum Card which costs $395 a year and offers many extras that the Starwood Platinum Card does not. These are two seperate cards. The regular AmEx Platinum cards offers upgrades on many things. See the below link which lists the two different cards.
http://www66.americanexpress.com/cards/apply/jsp/fmac/i_know_which.jsp?csi=0/20/b/2/0/146084311786/20/n&from=0

I will not be calling becuase the Starwood Platinum does not get you an upgrade to Gold Status. If someone is willing to pay the $395 a year for the regular AmEx Platinum then they are entitled to Gold status.

If someone can show me where it lists that the AmEx Starwood Platinum Card members are entitled to Gold Status that would be great.

Having worked in retail from 1986 through 1999 I just feel bad for those customer service reps that were telling callers that they were not entitled to the upgrade and were given a hard time by the caller that is all.

I joined the Starwood program totally by accident in December when I went to visit my sister in Baltimore and stayed at the Sheraton there. Now I read all the great advice on this thread and I'm getting really excited about earning points for the Dolphin/Swan. Two questions...

Is there a yearly charge for the Starwood Amex?

Can I transfer my Amex Blue account to a Starwood or do I have to cancel one and apply for the other?

Thanks~

NancyIL
05-26-2002, 02:28 PM
The Starwood AMEX card has no annual fee the first year, and $30 per year after that. I think you have to apply for the Starwood AMEX card as you would for any new card. The points aren't transferable between cards.

When I upgraded to gold, I never told any customer service people they were wrong. I asked if as a platinum member, could I be given a trial membership under gold. I was. It isn't forever, it is for one year. If I keep that status, so be it. I demanded nothing, I asked. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it hurts no one, it costs nothing, to ask.

Upon following the always excellent advice of this thread, I called the number on Shelly's link to upgrade my SPG to gold with my platinum SPG Visa. The lady was very nice and said that yes, it could be upgraded, but I would need a code. There is no code on that site. Does anyone know of a code, or should I try again and hope to find someone who will do it without a code.

P.S. What a shock I got when Tiffany posted that the AMEX platinum fee was $365 a year! ( I have one) It took a few minutes of frantic surfing to confirm that although that is correct, my SPG platinum amex is only $30 per year. Don't scare me like that!!

Thanks for all your good advice!!

Bimmy...I know of no such code...I would just call back.

MomPoppins. The website has a list of hotels. Click on special offers, then cash & points. The list has dwindled a lot. My guess is that they had so many reservations blocked off for each participating hotel, and as it was met, it came off the list. I know the Dolphin is no longer on the site. If you have a question about a particular site, I'd call Starwood and ask them if you may apply points to an existing reservation. That's how I got mine at Dolphin (but it was when Dolphin was still on the list).

Good luck!

I have a question... I've been a Starwood member for a very long time, started out platinum, went down to gold & now I've gone down to Preferred Plus... I don't mind any of that actually, but here IS my question... I have the Amex card & was wondering if we earn Starwood Points when we write out $$$ on those checks they send to us? You know, the ones that allow you to transfer your balances or make new purchases? Sometimes we pay for stuff that doesn't allow for credit card use, I'm just wondering if this would get around that & earn us points in the process???

Having a blast with my new Starwood AMEX card! This is a whole new accounting system for me, and I barely write checks anymore, (except a huge one at the end of the month for all these charges, lol). I wish the grocery store would allow "cash back" with using Amex.. just a tiny inconvenience.

Yesterday tried to use it for DS's eye doctor visit..he didn't take it for the visit, but I was able to charge the contacts and eye glasses to Amex (I think they were annoyed with the split payment, but hey, the points!!) My next stop was Target, then oil and filter on the car, and Circuit City for computer modum. ..yay, I can be on the DIS and the phone can ring! Finally, placed phone orders for graduation gift certificates at various college bookstores (instead of cash- high school grads love this when they get to school; they can purchase either clothing or school items/books with it. Every college I called mailed out the gift certificate the same day ..BC was the only one who didn't accept Amex )...This is quite fun, you guys!

My next plan of attack is to convince DH to switch Amex cards with me when he travels to Westins to rack up the Starwood points, but he isn't budging on that one for bookkeeping purposes as he uses the Amex Sky Miles..after all, we need those, too (I know, I know, I can roll them over into Starwood points later on!) Happy Shopping everyone.

Bimmy56: Yes, there is a code associated with the upgrade, however, the only way to obtain this code is by applying for and receiving the American Express Platinum Card (often confused with the SPG Platinum Card). Your best bet is to keep calling until you get a yes! Or pm or email me, as I may be able to offer additional advice. ;)

Does the AMEX Starwod Card earn double miles for groceries, gas, etc., like my AMEX Sky Miles card does?

Hi,

We have both and my understanding is that the AmEx Starwood does not earn double points. We are working out a plan on how to best use our cards in order to max points. We are going to use the AmEx Sky Miles at Stop'n Shop, Mobil and CVS and use our AmEx Starwood everywhere else.

Tiffany,
That sounds about like my plan(we'll be using the SM card for business exp & the SPG for personal)...My third dilemma is that I have a Miles One Visa card (which untill 9/11 was great) but since then they have increased the miles required to fly so I'm going to be getting rid of the card. Do you use any Visa or MC with benefits that you're happy with? T

Sorry. The only non AmEx card is a GM mastercard that my husband uses to build up points to use to down payments on a new car every three years or so.

I forgot about the GM card...good one!

I was thrilled when I heard about Stop & Shop...I have one across the street and have been driving five miles to a Shop Rite to use the Amex...

Happy Monday...if there is such a thing.

You Easterner's have me lost...Stop & Shop....Shop Rite? Are these Grocers? I shop @ Albertson's, and they take AMEX! (They better!). I know I'm addicted to POINTS, as I almost get a euphoric feeling after SPENDING a considerable sum. It's better than oysters...chocolate....lol

Nancy...hope you had a GREAT time on your little sojourn. I leave in a week for NY, and will also stop @ the Falls for a ride on the old Maid of the Mist. I enjoy the shops and the "cleanliness" of Canada. I also love the Western area of NY, the fingerlakes, etc. Pure Iroquois territory. Hope you enjoyed Boston, and rode a Swan in the park! (Points...points!)

Happy Monday all...(feels like a Friday to me). ;)

Hi All,

After reading all the different posts about upgrading to gold status with the AMX card, I figured I would call the customer service number at Starwood and see what happens. I certainly wasn't going to give anyone a hard time, nor insist that I was entitled - I just thought it might be worth a try.

I received my Starwood AMX card today in the mail - a few days earlier than they said. After activating the card, I called the Starwood Customer Service number.

I spoke with a very nice young woman. I told her I had recently received a platinum AMX card and I thought I could upgrade my preferred Starwood status to gold. I did not mention it was a Starwood AMX (nor did she ask).

She asked for my Starwood number, the name on the card and my security ID password (my mother's maiden name).

After a few seconds she told me I had been upgraded! No other additional info was asked for, and she also told me I should get a gold card and membership info in the next 4 weeks.

So thanks again to all the great info from everyone on this board. The extra points will be welcome when we stay at the Swan this July.

Now you are coming to my "neck of the woods"! I was born and raised in Niagara Falls, NY! And now I live a stone's throw away from the natural beauty. Isn't that Maid of the Mist great? And I love them handing out those wet raincoats to try to keep you dry!;) ;)

I am back from my 5 days in Las Vegas staying at Caesar's Palace on SPG points. We had a great time. Loved the shows, the shopping, the restaurants, and the weather! The room was nice, but I didn't like that the jacuzzi tub did not work. I called twice to have it fixed, but although they tried, it would not work. There was also a little too much mold in the grout in the shower. I liked the vanity in the bathroom and having separate doors to the toilet and the shower and a separate bathtub. It was a nice size room for the two of us. I was in the older tower. My sister's room in a newer tower was phenomenal! Larger and newer! But she paid cash.

I also liked the ease of the airport check-in facility. I checked in while my daughter picked up the luggage. How convenient! We arrived at Caesar's and went right up to our room. Very nice.

Enjoy your time here in Western New York. Our weather has not been great. I will put in an order for lovely weather when you are visiting!:D

Hi All,

Jen80370 - I used my AmEx Starwood at Stop'n Shop for the first time tonight. I just love building points.:D :D

Dreamflight99 - Yes, Stop'n Shop is a supermarket here on the East Coast.

DeadEndKid - There is a difference between a regular AmEx Platinum and the AmEx Starwood Platinum, but hey enjoy your Gold status. Don't ask don't tell right :D :D :D :D

Well, you sure have that one right, Tiffany! After reading all the different posts about this upgrade, I did realize that the Starwood AMX probably shouldn't get me that gold status. Which was why I had decided before I even dialed the number that I wasn't going to insist. And I wasn't going to mention it was a Starwood AMX card. If the Customer Rep asked me, I was going to answer her truthfully and say it was. But she never asked (and as you said, I never told :-).

Guess sometimes we just lucky!

So thanks to all of you that helped be get over my guilt. I sent an email to Starwood Customer Service the other day. See text of email below.

"Hi, I recently received my American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Platinum Card and a friend of mine told me that having this card could get my Starwood status upgraded to "Gold". Is this correct? Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appricated."

Well, today I recieved a reply. Guess who got Gold Status
:D :D :D

I do not feel gulity because I asked without being pushy and gave then all of the facts and they choose to upgrade me to Gold Status. Thanks again to all for giving me courage to ask. Could not make a phone call but you have got to love email.

E-mail is a wonderful invention, isn't it? I did the same thing.

Now I'm really getting obsessed. It isn't bad enough that DH hates to fly so much for travel, but when leaves us his itinerary and I see no Starwood resorts, I cannot believe it! What's up with that? Isn't there one in every city? Have a nice day, everyone.

Hey all-

Got my Starwoods Guest Card and my American Express card about 6 months ago. I called Starwoods this week and asked what I needed to do to be upgraded to gold. The customer service rep asked if I had a code. I told her no. She said that was ok and upgraded me to gold right then and there!!! How cool!!! However, none of my American Express points have transfered over...Starwoods told me they wouldn't transfer over until I made a transaction at a Starwoods location. Is that correct???

Also, is there a list that states what you get for your points? I'm really interested in what I get at Swan/Dolphin since that's why I got the cards in the first place. My wife is a teacher so we already get a discount rate on the hotel (AWSOME!!!). What else can I use the points for?

Thanks in advance,

Dub

We loved the Sheraton Fallsview at Niagara Falls, Ontario, but skipped the Boston segment - as my DH and kids were tired of long car rides, and the weather forecast was more of the same...WET! :( Our room in Niagara Falls had an awesome view of Horseshoe Falls, and we were on the club floor with HOT evening hors d'oeuvres and a lovely continental breakfast. I'm not sure if ours was a Heavenly Bed - but it was definitely a pillow top with a down comforter. We felt very pampered. :) It was too overcast to see much except the mist - so we didn't do the Maid of the Mist.

Since our hotel in Boston would've used one of my Free Fridays - I need to think of some place to go so I can use it before August 31st!

With 6 kids it has taken me all day to read all these starwood posts but I finally finished. Thanks to all of you I was able to upgrade to gold status and have begun to charge everything I can to that good old Amex starwood card to get those points. Since my husband is a police officer, we will be staying at the Dolphin this Dec. for 2 nights(gov. rate) but would love to get upgraded to club level to save some $$ on food. We will need 2 rooms and with 3 teens they eat like horses. By the way I called Starwood and they told me I would need 1250 pts per room per night to get club level if I already have a standard room booked. Is this accurate because I thought it was 750? Thank you again for all of your help. Just by posting you have answered alot of my questions and have given me some great ideas.:) :) :)

I just read Disneywith6kids post about the Club Level upgrade. I too have a standard room booked at the Swan this July (gov rate also, my wife is a librarian and thus a town employee).

We thought it was 750 points per night to get the Club Level upgrade. Does anyone know the correct answer? Though I suspect if Starwood told you 1250 that is how many is needed.

And yet I thought you needed 1250 points per night to upgrade to a better view?

Anyone have any specific, recent experience with this exact upgrade - standard room to club level with Starwood points???

Thanks!

I don't have any experience, but I called Starwood and asked and the person I talked to said it was 750. I hope it is not 1250 because I also need two rooms.

I was told by Paul in reservations that it is 750 for Club and 1250 for Resort View with balcony. Feel free to quote liberally. I'd call back and ask again. Then have them email or fax you in writing. Good luck!

Add my post to Jen's. Personally, I got club level for two nights at 750/night. They call it a "specialty room upgrade". It was 1250 for resort view w/balcony. They probably just got the two upgrades mixed up. I found it easier to have Dolphin reservations facilitate the points exchange. The same Paul mentioned above helped me too. Starwood wouldn't do until 5 days before date of arrival, but Paul got it done immediately,. Good Luck and see you in the Club Lounge!

I just wished to add my penny to your thoughts...You truly have a better chance of being upgraded to a resort view w/balcony (especially w/gold spg) than to club level. The resorts are reluctant to offer CL as a free upgrade, yet frequently upgrade guests to a better view and/or balcony room. So, you may very well end up with both...for only 750 pts. per eve! Good luck.:)

Nancy...glad to read everything went well on your sojourn. Sorry you missed Boston, maybe a free night in San Antonio? Especially after Happytrails posts details of his stay! I'll have to check out the Sherton in Ontario. Would you rate this property above as comp. to the Dolphin? Also, how was the weather in NF?

Lisa - I'm already using 1 Free Friday in Dallas when I drive my DD to college in August. I don't think I'd enjoy the heat of Texas twice in one summer. ;)

Our room at the Sheraton (not to be confused with the Sheraton on the Falls) had better beds than what I've experienced so far at the Swan/Dolphin - but they are so totally different in atmosphere. The Swan/Dolphin are unlike any chain hotel I've ever seen. :)

Hi LBYC-19,

Go to the American Express website and sign up to view your cards online. I believe my card is closing its billing cycle on the 9th or 10th of each month. I am not sure if all cards are on the same cycle or not though.

Hope this helps.

Joanne: My Starwood AmEx billing period closes around the 24th of the month and the payment is usually due around the 13th or the 14th of the next month. I asked Citibank to change my MC dates to about the same billing cycle - I like to pay all my bills at the end of the month. If your Starwood AmEx does not have a good billing cycle for you perhaps you could ask to have it changed.

Hi all,

...just popped in for a minute. We arrived in San Antonio on Friday Evening and checked into the Westin Riverwalk. The resort has 15 floors and we scored a great room on the 14th with balcony, overlooking the Riverwalk. The resort is less than three years old and is immaculate, complete w/ "Heavenly Beds" and beautiful furnishings. DW wants to move in (or at least replicate the furniture at our home) Lol. Oh oh!

You're right Nancy, it is HOT! Coming from Boston and temps in the 70's, it will take a few days to get into that high 90's temp mode. Hopefully, you'll have another opportunity to travel to Boston.

We're also contemplating our next location, as we will have two free weekends to use before 8/31. Our best friends and neighbors are going to Savannah, GA for a few days in July and then onto MCO - - staying at BWI for a few days. They've twisted our arms to join them, so it's either the Dolphin or Westin Savannah for a long weekend.

Tiffany, it was a close call with the packing, but I made it with three hours to spare! :p

Hi All! did anyone else notice a fraudulent charge on their CC or Check card after they purchased a subsription to "Inside Flyer" magazine with bonus Starwood Points? I haven't used my check card online in months, last time I used it was 5/22 to order Inside Flyer. On 5/ 31 someone named Cynthia Yaboah used my # and billing info to purchase a Palm Pilot ($422.94!) from a company in Utah. I can only think that it must be a hacker or employee of WebFlyer. It will of course, get straightened out with the bank, but I'm a little freaked out, cancelled the card and I think I'm going to e-mail Inside Flyer just to see if they have anyone working there by that name. it had to be from an online order, because the Palm company said that this person had my name and billing address, the product was shipped to an address which he would not give me. Sorry, a little stressed, spending my Saturday this way. Thanks, Patti:(

Hi all,

Yesterday's mail brought my new GOLD HHonors card from Hilton good for 2 years! The benefits look good too. You always get club level if available or the "best available room". Sounds similar to Platinum Starwood. The funny thing is I still don't have my Gold Starwood card even though I requested one sent to me. I know it doesn't matter if you have the actual card but the Gold hilton card is SO pretty and shiny (silly me) I want the Gold Starwood too!

Now if I can just figure out when I can stay at a Hilton to try it out.

So, all you Gold Starwood members, check around with your other frequent guest cards. Even though, Starwood would be my first choice, it is fun to have these other gold cards.

bphunt and anyone else.

DO NOT EVER USE A CHECK CARD FOR INTERNET PURCHASES, USE A CREDIT CARD!!!!!

here is the difference. A check card is your money. A credit card is the banks money. With a credit card you are limited to a 50 dollar exposure. With a check card, everything in that account can be cleaned out and legally the issuer can say tough luck. Chances are small that they would do that, but it has happened.

Diners Club has a Montage credit card that has two account numbers, the one appearing on the plastic card and another number sent to you separately for use on the internet. if a fraud takes place, that number can be quickly cancelled and a new one issued without affecting the entire account. Visa is also implementing a system to protect against internet fraud, but am not sure what it is yet. Also understand Mastercard is getting close. I don't know if American Express has anything like Diners, But if they do I'll consider getting one.

A big thank you to all the spg experts out there. We have about 8000 starwood points and 2 free fridays already thanks to the great info here. Saving points for the Dolphin in Dec (nurses rate yeah) And am using one free friday to stay overnight near the airport at Detroit before we leave for the WL next week. Never would have known about all this otherwise including the American Express.

Since I have to use my other free friday by end of August (if i'm reading it right) may use it for a night in Chicago at a nice Westin right on the magnificant mile.

I have reservation through Dreams Unlimited for Dolphin Standard room, 11/9-15. Got my Gold SPG membership, the SPG Plat. Amex, have gotten some nice bonus points, etc. Proud to say in 2 months have over 6200 pts. Have 1300 more to go for upgrade for the whole stay. Thank you to all you experts!

Have decided that having a Balcony/patio room is of enough importance to me that I don't want to chance a comlimentary upgrade and will just use points to upgrade. Checking Starwoods system, two days of my trip our sold out and with only 20% of the room having balconies, am nervous.

How early can I call to upgrade the room type with my with points? Is this too early? Closer to stay? Are the points debited right away?

Who do I call?

Later on, If for some reason it looks like vacancy rate is high and I want to chance the Gold upgrade, can my points be put back?

Thanks all!

Jen,

I ordered mine through the web site under "replacement card" or some such. It actually arrived yesterday so it took about 4 weeks! Maybe they are quicker over the phone? (Sadly, it is not nearly as "pretty" as the Hilton one!)

Hightown- you can upgrade when you have enough points because they are debited immediately. However, I recommend going through Dolphin reservations to do it. Starwood will tell you to wait until 5 days before but Dolphin doesn't have this policy. "Paul" is the person to ask for if you can get him.

I'm a little worried though about you having booked through Dreams Unlimited. Call and see if that will effect you obtaining upgrade through points. It may not at all! I just know they handle "wholesaler" reservations differently. Let us know on the boards if it makes a difference, I am curious.

Obsession for status has set in and I am getting the upgrade for the Hyatt card. The funny thing is that their card starts with "Gold" for everyone so they are giving me the next level which is "Platinum". I made my husband laugh by suggesting a new round of calls about getting everyone else to match my new Hyatt Platinum status! I know this is a devious mind at work, I am NOT going to actually do it.

Jen,
I called and they gave me the fax number. They told me to spell out what I wanted, ie..."matching to Gold Level status" Send your Hilton info and "proof" of SPG Gold (which I got by printing out temp. replacement card off net). Send above to 1-972-371-5110 (attn. Diana Blair). Hilton automatically sent the new Gold card which was nice.

Yes, Marriott dissed me too! Boy, are they missing out. You'd better believe I will be staying at one of the upgraded card spots instead of a Marriott!! (Starwood being preferred, of course):p

I got up graded to Diamond VIP status with Hilton by emailing Diana Blair my Starwood statement, it took only 2 days and she upgraded me, she didn't accept the Starwood card photocopy I faxed to her, she wanted to see my statement only. She did upgrade me to Diamond becaue I am platinum with Starwood. Be politely insistent and they give in.

I am using my Starwood Points to upgrade to Club level. My reservation already states "Club Level Room" they said they would deduct the points when the date is closer. Has anyone ever stayed at this resort. The Westin web-site says cont. breakfast, and evening cocktails, Does this mean NO snacks in the afternoon. Any experience with other Westin resorts on what to expect. This is our first time to be upgraded to club level! Thanks for any comments!

We want to redeem our points for a stay at the Dolphin (52,000 pts). We will be at WDW 1/2 - 1/13. I just called starpoints and they said i had enough points for 6 nights at the dolphin. I am all ready to lock in but wanted to check with you guys to see if this is the best way to go with my hard earned points. I really wanted to get in on the deal (60.00 nt and 4000 pts) but that expires before our vacation. Do you folks think i should just take the 6 nights and use all my points or is there a better deal? thanks in advance for any guidance and or help making this big decision!

Muffy,

If you have any more Starwood stays planned, or have any other ways to accumulate points, hold off a while! If you reach 70,000 you will get 5 nights free and 50,000 airmiles on the airline of your choice!

ILUVWDWTOO...good idea! I would hold off too! Imagine not having to pay for airfare either! How great! Good luck!

hightown, I would call Dolphin directly ASAP. I was a few months out when I got my upgrade. It can't hurt to ask. Starwood will tell you only at the 5 days mark, but I've hadmuch better luck dealing with the Dolphin directly.

Hyatt actually gave me Diamond Status even though I only asked for Platinum (their middle tier level)! Wow...I owe it all to Starwood and the DIS boards!

Wow what a thread! It took all day but I read it all.:D I am using 2 free nights at the Sheraton Suites Galleria in Atlanta, GA. Has anyone been there? If my DH is platinum will we be given Club Level or is this something I need to request ? I know with Hilton we are always given Club but this is our first trip at this level with Starwood. Thanks for all the information, I have learned so much today! :D

yes if you are platinum and a suite is available you get it. I have never had a problem getting one except once but they gave me a club room instead. Be sure to call the platinum desk to add your # to the ressie.

To someone who had posted about the westin riverwalk: it is a beautiful hotel with the heavenly beds and the best hotel on the riverwalk. It is so beautiful. The bathrooms are huge too with marble flooring and the service is the best. If you get a chance use your free fridays or weekends to take a vacation in san antonio my next fav after disney.;) ;)
