Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Everybody should be just about finished with their last LR before marathon weekend. DH is out doing his 20 right now. I've had a fascinating head cold since Xmas eve. Made 12 miles yesterday a little bit interesting. I was having a hard time after the first mile so downshifted from R4/W1 to R3/W2. By mile 2, I decided I was just going to 2.5 then turning around and trying the 12 next weekend. Not sure what happened...I think I decided I'd be more upset if I quit than if I just did it and got it over with. So, got through 12...not a fabulous pace but I'm not looking for a PR at WDW.

I think after doing the full last year, I have forgotten to respect the half distance. I'm in a mode where I've done this a few times before, so I kinda forgot how far 12 miles is.

Today is my oldest 16th birthday. We'll be reporting bright and early to the driver's license office tomorrow for the driving test :scared1:

BTW, y'all may want to start doing your cold weather dances. It's been in the 80s here all week.

Bring on the TAPER MADNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good morning! Mel, way to get those steps in even with a head cold!

It's in the 60s here in New Jersey and we're getting ready to head out to do our 10 miles (DH is already complaining about having to walk so far today). Then we will join the tapers. Taperers.

We haven't decided if we are going to a local reservoir with a paved walking path, or a local park, or just walking down a long, straight stretch of pavement at the state park. Wind is a factor for us today, and I'm asthmatic so I'm trying to avoid the windiest spots. I don't want to trigger an attack so close to the race!

Have a super day, all! :)

I did my 10 miles on the dreadmill yesterday. Cranked my David Cook CD (love every song!) and then a mix CD I made with a bunch of my favorite running songs. I used my Jelly Belly Sport Beans and water throughout. It was long and dull but I was so glad to be done. It took me 2h6m which is right about what I thought it would. Took a Motrin in the middle as the left knee and right hip were starting to feel sore.

Today I feel great though and so glad it is behind me. Today is DH's last LR, I think he is going for 10 or 11.

So, so, so excited that this is getting closer! My kids missed 6 days of school due to our ice storm on 12/11. Then they had 2 days and began school vacation. Needless to say 3 crazy kids, home far too much in the last few weeks, post Christmas madness, there is nothing more I want than to hop on that plane with just my husband and be gone for a week!!!!!

Mel - I hope you get rid of your head cold soon. And good luck to your DD for her license!!

Duckie -Enjoy your 10 miler - nice weather!

Allyson - Good job on your 10 miler (and on the TM!) How nice that just you and your DH are going - and I see to the bahamas too!

I am getting so excited! Only 11 days until I arrive at WDW! I am about half packed. I really hope we get some good weather (hoping for 60 - 70 for the races).

Hello everyone!

My first full is just 14 days away....oh....wow that's close.....:scared1:

Doing pretty good and feeling pretty good. Didn't get out yesterday - nice temps but pouring rain, t-storms then 40mph winds. Had work to do today so plan on getting something in tomorrow after work. May not be the full 10 miles as I cannot stay on the TM that long, but will do what I can. Do some heavy bike miles during the week to help. Hoping New Years Day is nice so can get in a good 6-8 miles then.

Mel - feel better soon.

Allyson - kudos to hanging on the TM that long.

Duckie - hope the walk went well (tell Noah only 12 days until Kona!)

Becky - I'll start packing this week. Been tossing some things into suitcase over past couple weeks.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!!

Well I survived my 20 miler on the TM. I was cursing myself for signing up for this stupid full marathon. I honestly didn't have a problem with being on the TM - I watched almost the entire 2nd season of the Showtime show Weeds that I borrowed from a friend of mine so at least I wasn't bored but still 20 miles is a heck of a long way to continuously be moving. I did it in 4 hours 36 mins so not quite the pace I was thinking but at least I know I won't be swept and I feel confident that I can get it finished. It did feel good to be done with my last long run before the marathon. I told my DH that now I just have one more long run to do and that will be the actual marathon. I think I might need to have my DH give me some Coca-Cola when I run past him by the Boardwalk. I had to fill my gatorade bottle another time during the run but I am not worried since I can drink either gatorade or powerade as well as water. I tried the other half of the vanilla flavored Cliff gel shot and it was nasty and I don't think it helped me any. I do still have a chocolate one so I don't know if I will like that one any better but most likely not. But that Coca-Cola was heaven when I grabbed that out of the fridge when filling up my gatorade bottle. This is also another good thing about being home on the TM for the long run - I didn't get off but two other times and once was to kick the a/c down to 71 degrees since I was hot (my DH on the other hand was freezing!! LOL) and the other time was to switch the disk on the DVD.

I must say I didn't have a very good night of sleep last night and I attribute that to knowing I had to wake up and do 20 miles so I know won't be able to sleep the night before the marathon. Guess I won't have to worry about sleeping in. After I was done with my 20 miler I sat in the ice bath for about 30 minutes. Simba (my new kitten) decided to "join" me - he jumped up on the edge of the tub and then ended up falling in 2 times - good thing I have quick reflexes and I cought him both times before he got too wet!! All in all I am not feeling too bad for having done 20 miles so hopefully it will be the same after the marathon. I still can't believe its only 2 weeks away - 14 days.

Hope everyone is done with their long runs and enjoy the taper - its almost here!!! Good luck WISH team

Allyson, it sure sounds like you and DH deserve a vacation! And it seems that you have planned a great one!

Becky- We loved the weather today! It is so unusual this time of year--but perfect for making sure my running skirt would work for the half!

Tricia: you are AMAZING getting that done on the treadmill! The park we walked in today was donated by Rockefeller--it was the site of his summer home, and the grounds are lovely (the mansion burned down 50 years ago). Still, we were getting a little bored with the scenery for 10 miles--I can't imagine how you did it (although Weeds was an excellent choice!).

Liz: You better believe we were talking about that Kona breakfast on our walk today. DH was asking how long your long walks have been if ours was 10! I made a video of us walking. I'll try to edit it and get it up tonight on youtube for you!

AFM, DH and I went for our longest walk today before taper. The temps were in the mid-60s, and it was windy but not unbearable. We went to the county park (he wanted to try the ocean walk, but the wind was blowing so hard I couldn't open the car door! So that was a no).

Despite the bad signs (having to drive to a second walking destination, getting a late start, DH having to eat regular instead of quick oats for breakfast:sad2: ), we pressed on. And, of course, my pedometer wasn't working. Dead batteries. So we walked a route around the park that I don't know. I have no idea how far we walked, but it had to be close to ten miles: we walked at a pretty good clip for 2 hours and 40 minutes. My shins are a little sore and my hips have some pain (which has been going on since I hurt my back), but I could have kept walking!

Only 11 days!

Allyson: Definitely stop by and say hi to me at Water Stop #1/#11. Me and DOOD will be there, and lots of other WISHers I hope. (I don't know who else got in, but there should be quite a contingency!) Are you going to the POP meet? You've been doing so well--your 1/2 is going to rock! Re: the rain question: good suggestions already. I'll just add another one regarding socks/blisters. If it rains you might want to bring another pair of socks to change into at some point along the course. P.S. Great pace on your 10 miler!

John: I didn't know your story about the Goofy. That's so inspiring--even though I winced at the knee blow-out--and I know you've comforted lots of us who are going into the races feeling overwhelmed or undertrained. Get to the starting line, right? And "keep moving forward." What a great motto! Thanks for sharing your experience, and I'm glad to know we'll be doing Goofy 2010 together!

Jackie: I didn't know about Mystic, as I'm still catching up on everyone's lives. I'm so sorry. I'm glad you have the peace of mind that your vet's tests provided, and that you have two new family members: Sierra and ?? They'll definitely provide you with endurance training! (And love!)

Becky: I'm in corral G--ugh! Are you and DH doing the marathon together? I came up with a silver lining to your pneumonia--now you HAVE to do Goofy 2010, so we'll be on the same schedule and with John, too! (I hope your DDs don't get ill.)

Ang: Wow, your Christmas was a looong day. I need a nap reading it. About my back: I'm klutzy, as you all know, so I don't even have the joy of having a warrior athlete's anecdote. Just a boring story involving a slippery hill, a book back full of papers and textbooks, and me slipping and falling. I did end up looking, however, like a overturned turtle (or this smilie without the laughter: :rotfl2:).

Ms. Duckie: Your training sounds great! Thanks for posting the question about the stretching, btw. It was very useful. I've found myself enjoying the walking, but really challenged by its difference from even a RW. I bow to all of you walkers, and hope to pick up a few tips from y'all for my race. :worship: Did your 10 miler go well?

Terri: I'm bummed that I won't get to meet you at WDW. Goofy 2010, though! :woohoo:

Jeff: Glad to hear you made it through the power outage with your usual photographic flair!

Shan: Yeah for taper mode! And what a good pace, too! You've had a tough training year, I know, so it's great that know it's all coming together for you.

Mel: Well, your 16yo's driving test ought to keep someone's HR up! And it's perfect timing with taper madness and all. What will you do to commemorate the big day? I hope your head cold eases up soon and you have some fun SRs before the 1/2.

Hi to Chris, Tricia, Maura, Racey Tracey (beautiful pics!), Laurie, Kristi, Lily, and anyone else I missed!

As for me: Did my 16 miles today, so I'm feeling a little less undertrained than last week. Still nervous about what will happen at the marathon but it's Disney, right? Like Mel said, it's not about the PR. It's about the people! And I'm looking forward to seeing you all!

Well, I completed my 10-miler today, and I felt pretty darn good during and after. I'm certainly feeling better about the Half now! It was a perfect day for running - about 60 degrees, overcast but no rain. There were a lot of people out there enjoying the spring-like weather. It took me just a minute or two over 2 hours, which means I'm on track for a solid 12 minute mile pace. A little slower than I thought I would be running this race, but . . . that actually brings me to my next topic.

I found out about a week ago that I am quite unexpectedly expecting! That's right, I am pregnant, due in mid-August! This is quite startling since a) we already have 4 kids with no plans for more! b) I will be 45 when this baby is born; and c) I really did not think this was possible right now (for a number of reasons).

However, we are not unhappy about it - just needing to adjust our lives a bit. I was already planning to leave my job in June and do my home-based travel business full-time, so that part works out pretty well (I just need to figure out when to let my job know!). And we have about 100 other things to figure out, but I'm sure we can do it. It's just, well, a little unexpected!

I have a call into my midwife to get her OK to run the half, but I personally don't have a lot of concerns about it. I would love any advice from the team about running while pregnant! I've adjusted my pace down from 11 minute miles to 12 minute miles. I'm doing R3/W2 and that seems to work well for me - the 2 minute walks seem like paradise, and really allow me to fully recover physically so that the 3 minutes of running feels really good. That's how I did my 10-miles, and I never like I was pushing myself too hard. Any additional input would be great.

So - assuming all goes well, another WISH baby to look forward to!

Debra- as many have said, adrenaline will carry you through on race day (at least, that's what I'm hoping for!). Great job on the training! Sorry about hurting your back. I sprained my neck and shoulders a few years ago slipping on some ice with a heavy bag. Very hurty. I feel for you!

Kira: Congratulations! And congratulations on your run today, too!

Kira! congratulations! Very exciting. However, your news makes me a little nervous since I have been banking on the fact that I am too old to get pregnant at 42. Gulp.

I just finished a 20 mile run. It was brutal. However, we stopped and got a cup of coffee at mile 13 and that was HUGE!!!! I am now thinking I need to find a coffee stop during the marathon. Anyone know where I can get a cup of coffee on the course? It worked better than gu or jelly bellies ever have.

Take care everyone!

OMG!!!!
I was just reading along and then it came to me,....
I haven't posted today. Sorry about that, I know everyone is dying to her about my day. hehe:lmao:

Duckie: Sorry to hear about the dead batteries. Glad to hear you were able to get in at least 10 miles. I think you'll do great!

Kira: OMG! A congratulations is in order!! You have 4, so one more will just make it that much more fun and happy in your household! I think your doing great.

Tricia: Glad to hear you made it through your 20 on the dreadmill and even got to catch up on some missed TV programs. A two-fer!

Liz: Also glad you were able to get outside and get some miles in. I'm sure it must be hard to work miles in around the crazy weather. Can't wait to see you again (last time was May!!) and can't wait for the yummy desert party.:)

Debra: Hey girl. Yes, it's Disney and anything can happen, and will!! You WILL finish without a question!! Have a great time.!! Can't wait to finally meet up!!

AFM: Racey Tracy went out this am (again with not much sleep due to being up again ready Breaking Dawn til almost dawn :rotfl2: those Twilight books are very addictive!! Yes I'm an adult, yes I read Twilight books and yes I'm in love with Edward - he can bite me anyday!!) I got out there for 6 miles as a LD on schedule for tapering. I am supposed to do 6 next week, but may do 8 instead. Started making my lists as to what I'm doing each day ats WDW and what I'll need for those days and activities. Did some laundry today, put away Christmas decorations and watched some Dolphin Football.

Have a good evening everyone!!

Kira - CONGRATULATIONS! Another WISH baby! There should be plenty of advice on running in the early stages - GaJen did the Goofy last year and didn't even know, if I recall correctly. Sounds like you're doing just fine with your R/W intervals.

Mel - Way to go on getting the 12 done with the cold. And good luck with the driving test tomorrow. We failed it the first time, which was actually a good thing since I didn't think she was ready! :scared1:

Allyson - Great job on the TM. :thumbsup2

Becky - I'm off work this week, so I officially start packing tomorrow. We leave in 10 days. :woohoo:

Liz - 14 days - What in the world was I thinking?

Tricia - I don't have a problem with the gels (much prefer the mocha and chocolate to the vanilla, but will throw in a vanilla for variety. Mango isn't too bad either), but I discovered during my 20 miler that I need solid food too. Fortunately we did a route that came back by the car, so I was able to grab a couple of snack bars. Gotta figure out what to do during the marathon though! :confused3

Debra - DH and I are at #1/11 too. And Sienna and Apollo (as new puppy is apparently officially named now - he was Cicero yesterday, but his new name tag says Apollo, so I'm assuming DH has decided now!) are giving me plenty of endurance training. That plus the miles I'm walking trying to housebreak 2 dogs... I should be plenty ready for Jan 11th! And you're absolutely right - it's not about the PR, it's the people. :) I have to keep reminding myself of that when I start panicking about my lack of training.

Keep your fingers crossed that I bond with puppy #2 (Apollo) soon. I want DH to be happy, but I really do not like this little guy. :sad2: The only positive aspect is that he entertains Sienna, which frees up some of my time. Other than that...

Will either get in a 3 mile run tomorrow outside or on the TM, but can't imagine how the TM will go with 2 puppies. Outside sounds much better! :thumbsup2

Congrats Kira! On the run and the new addition!

Debra, I will definately seek you out, I need to say HI! You were so encouraging to me back in my Couch to 5K days. Gosh I remember when running 90 second stretches was daunting to me! :) I don't think we are hitting the Pop meet. We are with friends and spending Friday at DHS.

Tricia, 20 miles on the TM! Way to go! I thought 10 miles was long and dreadful! LOL! You did great! As for the Gu, we tried chocolate and vanilla and didn't like either. We tried the blox too and I thought those were the ultimate nasty. The beans are my fave and what we settled on. Taste just like regular Jelly Belly beans.

Duckie, glad you and DH got your walk in today! The weather was really really nice here too. Way warmer than December usually is.

Happy Tapering everyone!

I put together a video of us working out today at the park. The beginning was supposed to be like the Sopranos but I don't have mp3 of the theme song (my copy is from iTunes mp4 blah blah blah). The original Sopranos theme video I did is pretty funny, but it'll wait.

Instead, this is us walking around (yeah, I know, it should be "this is we" with the subject pronoun after the verb "to be," but it sounds sucky that way. :-) ) the park. At one point Dh scares the ducks with is quacking. At the end he makes a joke that we never left the parking lot...which we did.

It's short. 2:46, I think.

YouTubed, with a WISH shout out at the end. :)

Congrats to Kira and glad to hear that your family will adjust. I have four and am just a little older than you and I would have a hard time with news of a little one on the way. I can tell you that I snow skied at 5 months with my last one.

This is quick as we are sharing a computer while on vacation in CO. I got on a tread mill tonight and about died. The attitude and dryness are about to get the better of me.

Glad to hear of all the excitement about the upcoming race. You guys rock!

Tricia - Congrats on the 20 miler on the treadmill. I know that's not fun, but way to go. I've done the same with Entourage so I can relate.

Mel - Great job sticking with it and completing all 12 miles! Good luck tomorrow at the driver’s license office!

Allyson – WTG completing your 10-miler on the TM!

Tricia – You did it! I can’t imagine doing 20 miles on the TM. Is Simba getting into everything? My cat drove me CRAZY when he was a kitten with all of his shenanigans!

Duckie – Glad you had decent weather for your long walk! Hope the soreness goes away fast.

Debra – That sounds like something I would do. I’m so clumsy, and it seems like it keeps getting worse! WTG on getting your 16 miles in!

Kira – Oh, my goodness, what a wonderful surprise! Congratulations!! I hope you have a smooth, healthy, and enjoyable pregnancy! :goodvibes

Congrats Kira! :yay:

I started my taper yesterday by getting a new pair of shoes. Switched from my Saucony Ride to Asics Cumulus 10. The verdict is out right now. My 3 miler hurt today, but I think I'm still recovering from my 12 miles I ran on Friday.

Today I got a massage. I'm a tad sore right now, but I so needed it!!! The best part is I still have enough on my gift card to get another massage when I get back from the half. :thumbsup2

Kira Wow! Santa brought you quite the present!

Cecilia I'm at mile 11 water stop. I can always bring a thermos!

Tracy Your activity tires me out reading it. And no offense, but I was really hoping the Dolphins would lose to the Jets yesterday so the Pats could get in.

I can't shake this feeling I have that I am now totally underprepared for the half NEXT SATURDAY! Today I'm going to run 5 at the gym and then some weights. Will nurse a trained back muscle and the recurrinig knee problem.

Ang - Simba for the most part is a good kitten. I had to put him in the "cat room" last night - our bathroom use to be a bedroom and is the room that the cats litter, food and were we put them for the night - since cats LOVE to run around at night and we need our sleep. The other 2 have been mellow lately and haven't been having to be put up at night. But last night I had to put the kitten in the bathroom because he wouldn't leave me alone and my DH was getting frustrated with him running around and clawing on things. So I think he might get more fiestier the longer he is here. Of course now he is sleeping like the other 3. LOL Thanks for asking.

No training for me today. I plan to do 5 miles tomorrow though. My lower legs are a little sore but not too bad. I used my Stick and rubbed some of it out.

Hope everyone is enjoying their taper (except for me its not going to feel too much like a taper this week since I did nothing last week. Have a good Monday.

Okay, I have to go back and catch up with the thread, but I wanted to post really fast and say:

Congratulations, Kira!!!! How exciting for you and your family!! My due date for Carter was 8/12 and I was signed up for the half marathon this past January, so I know what you are going through. My ob/gyn advised me not to run the half (and I didn't), BUT he is not an athlete and told me that he was erring on the side of caution because he was unfamiliar with long distance running and what kind of effect that could have on the baby. Personally, I think I would have been fine running the half, just adjust your pace and be extra careful if it's hot that day. I did run 7 miles when I was about 5 or 6 weeks pregnant (before my doctor told me not to do long distance) and didn't have any problems, so what's another 6 miles? What do your kids think about the baby? Are they over the moon excited too? I am just so excited for you and your family!! :woohoo: :woohoo:

Okay, I'm off to get caught up on the thread and then I'll be back to post. My New Year's resolution is to stay caught up with the Wish thread, I've been missing you guys!!!

Hello to everyone else! :goodvibes It sounds like everyone is doing what they have to do to get themselves to the start line in about 11 days. :woohoo: I am really excited to have my last LR behind me -- I did 12 on the TM this past Friday. It wasn't too bad since I had my kindle and finished reading "Jane Eyre" and I had my ipod. And my friend/training partner, Patty, joined me for the last hour or so. FUN! Now I can turn all of my attention to wedding planning. I'll fit in 6 miles this weekend, but the rest of my workouts will be mostly cross-training and short 3-4 mile runs.

Can't wait to see everyone in 10 days and to meet all of our new teammates! :grouphug:

Hey all! Haven't posted on here in a long time. I have no real excuses, just life being as crazy as it can be.

First of all, Kira--congratulations! How exciting (and unexpected, right?) for you! :)

I won't even try to catch up from the weeks and weeks that I've missed, and there are a ton of new people on here that I don't even recoginze yet. I hope to get to meet many of you next weekend.

My training's been ok, not great, but I think it will get me through the races. The whole "new baby" thing has thrown both Krista and I off slightly in our training, but I think we're finally adjusting and learning how to manage the new responsibilities while also making time for ourselves. So....that means we're both going to train hard enough in 2009 to show up at next year'sr marathon seeded in the elite corrals. Bring it on, Adriano Bastos ;) Or something like that.

I know everyone's in taper mode right now, and for you first timers, I'm sure you're going nuts with anticipation, nervousness, excitement, etc, etc, etc. Don't worry, it's normal. I remember going through the same thing and I know most of the others here do, too. Just know that your training has brought you this far, and it will carry you through. Crossing that finish line will be a life-changing experience, and sharing it with WISHers makes it all the more amazing. Have a great "last week," everyone, and listen to your body. Rest if you need it. Hydrate well. Sleep well. Repack the running clothes in the suitcase 27 times. :) And I can't wait to see you guys in 11 days!

Racey Tracy: I'm old enough that the phrase "Bite me" has entirely different connotations. Maybe that's why I'm unable to get into the Twilight series. It sounds like your taper strategy is pretty ambitious--you're working in reverse if you move from 6 to 8! It'll be cool to see your racewalking in action in under two weeks!

Jackie: Oooh, you're at the same water stop. Very cool! I really like the names you have for your pups--and that they're not all matchy, matchy. I know what you mean about not immediately bonding with pets. We have two cats, and it took me a while to love the one. (She's too much like me...stubborn and spoiled.) But I can't imagine live without her.

Allyson: Ah, the C25K days. Isn't that wild--you've progressed so much (and I've backslid). Doesn't that just give you the confidence boost you deserve? I, too, am a big fan of the candy, er, sports beans.

Ms. Duckie: I just watched your video of the 10 miler. Love the music, love the fact I felt I was right there with you and the 10 miles flew by! ;) The Noah has the right idea about eating; you have the right idea about stretching, and look great in your WISH gear!

Joan: Enjoy your CO vacation, with or without the TM!

Chris: I love Entourage! After all, I'm a Turtle. :lmao:

Ang: I like to think we're not clumsy, just directionally challenged. And I don't have this strange preference for staying upright and vertical. It ignores too many other interesting directions. :thumbsup2

Shan: Good luck breaking the shoes in. Did the massage include your sore feet?

Maura: Coffee in a thermos for Cecilia? Now THAT's service! Take care of your back and knee, and good luck on your 5 miler.

Tricia: Ah, Simba's settling in and feeling fiesty. You've got the right system with the bathroom. DOOD and I lock ourselves in and give the cats the run of the place. Yeah, we're the alphas. :rolleyes1

Cam: Good luck with the rest of your VR planning--how fun! :yay: It sounds like the Kindle is good for your training. What do you like about it, if I may ask? (Always susceptible to the lure of new shiny toys...).

Steve: You're already an elite in my book! And fatherhood suits you...look at you, being the cool dad and offering your wisdom on the upcoming races. Carter's a lucky boy! :goodvibes

Hi to Cecilia, Laurie, Tricia, Mel, Jeff, Terri, Kristi, Krista, John, and anyone I may have missed!

As for me: Rest day today. Did a bit of running around (not literally) for the trip. And there's more last-minute stuff to do. My BIL is surprising my ILs by flying down to the marathon for the weekend. Not to watch us, but because his flights for Christmas were delayed and he's doing a belated holiday with the parents. It's a surprise, too, so shhhhh. They'll be so excited to see him they won't miss me at all--so I'm free and clear for as many WISH events as I can squeeze in. :woohoo:

Steve-great advice (especially about the repacking!).

Debra, that is so cool that you have time for WISH stuff! And the part about DH eating while I'm training is a reference to training for the Minnie, where we would go out mallwalking before the mall opened and he'd be standing in line for something (just to see what the line was for, no less) or standing in the center of the mall eating a snack and watching me walk (and he still literally ran circles around me at the Minnie, with NO TRAINING!).

Hello everyone!

Just a quick "drive by" Got back from a week of vacation and now I am way behind everywhere!

Kira, CONGRATS and Good Luck. Did I read right and this will be #5?:worship: :worship:

Steve, I am suppose to be packing? Heck I won't pack until late 1/7 or early 1/8. (I am a professional at this packing bit!)

I did my last long run on 12/20 because I knew that last week was a lost cause! Went to Jamica for Christmas. VERY VERY warm! I did get one short run in and cross trained by climbing the Duns River Falls. Got to get out there some this week and get a few short runs in. My group is doing 11 miles Sat so I have to skip that. I do NOT have the kind of body that can recover by the week after. (Actually that's another reason I wasn't worried about the 12/20 date on the long run. I tend to be a "slow recover" I have discovered... Things I never thought I would know about myself!)

After all my travel hassels this week I am hoping getting to Disney is easier, but just in case I am taking Randy's release and a copy of his DL with me when I fly down on Thursday. That way if his plane is late Friday I can pick up his credentials. (My mother was delayed 24 hours on her way to Jamica and then was 3 hours later getting home last night! YIKES!)

I won't be at the Pop meet (see the Friday arrival above) but I am going to try to come cheer at the 5K. I have to do some work Friday, but the nice thing is my company is on California time so they won't ever know I am MIA!:rotfl2:

Hope everyone has a good week!

Thanks for all the good wishes everyone! My midwife has officially OK'ed my running the half :cool1: so I am good to go! I'm just going to take it easy and listen to my body.

In fact, I have to say it's really nice to take off all the pressure about finishing in a particular time, and just go out there to have a great time. It's also the first race I'm doing with my husband (and our first time in WDW without the kids), so it's special for that reason as well.

Everyone sounds like they're doing great with their training! I am SO EXCITED to be leaving in just 10 days that I can hardly believe it.

Happy tapering!

Debra: Hey I'm right there with you on the "bite me" phrase which I know quite well and used alot at the time. I also used to say, "Kiss my grits" Do you remember that one??
Can't wait to hang out, I'll be sure to try and show off my racewalking for you.

Looks like it might be very cool or cold in Orlando that weekend. Looks like a cold front will be moving through starting Wednesday. Will have to see how the forecast keeps changing. It can and will change up to about 2 days before the day you are looking at.

Maura: About the 6 miles then 8 miles thing... This whole year for me has almost been a constant training for some kinda Half Marathon or 15k or something. I feel doing two 6 milers in a row before the half is kinda "lazy" for me. I will have another Half Marathon two weeks after Disney, the Miami ING Half Marathon. I just want to keep the miles up so my body is use to that.

Tracy- Please no cold! Please! I want warm! It's about 26 degrees right now (and it was 69 yesterday afternoon--how ridiculous is that?). We can't wait to see you there, racewalking ahead of us! We'll be cheering for you! But first, the POP meet! Woohoo!

Tracy - If I could place an order for Sunday's weather, I'd like it around 50-60 degrees for race hours. The rest of the time I'd prefer 75-80. We arrive Thursday morning and leave Tuesday afternoon. Think you can arrange that?

Also, most of my running group tries to do 10 every weekend even during the off-season. They figure they're pretty much ready to do a half at any time the mood strikes!

Steve - Welcome back! We'll forgive you for not being a regular - something about being a new dad AND trying to train for a marathon... Thanks for checking in and offering some veteran advice.

Didn't run today - by the time I was done with the AM puppy shift, I was exhausted. Then had to run pre-Disney errands, then had 1st vet appt in the PM. MUST do 3 miles tomorrow. MUST do 3 miles tomorrow. MUST...

Hi everyone!

Kira- congratulations! Good to hear that the mid wife gave you the OK.

I ran this morning on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. It was fun. I only did 1.5 miles, and it felt good. I kinda wish I had done more now since it it back to the treadmill tomorrow.

Question for everyone (maybe this would get answered if I actually read my MFM book): What's the purpose of an ice bath? Is it really an ICE bath, or just cold water? Am I completely misinterpreting everything?

I am going to buy my flights for the Princess half, probably tomorrow. Southwest is dictating my days because I am refusing to pay too much for a flight, but I will pay for a room for extra nights and extra park days to get the cheaper plane tickets. Do I have my priorities straight?

Sounds like everyone is starting to wind down, just waiting for race day!

I did just under 4 miles today. Wasn't too bad. I have the extra week of training, so I hope to keep building on my distance to make it easier on race day. Since my training has been so sporadic, I don't think I need a taper.

In case anyone leaves for WDW before I check back in again, GOOD LUCK!

Good Mroning WISHers.
I agree Jeff, when I want the weather to change I just go over and adjust the thermostat!! hehe :lmao:

Weather report from Weather channel so far:

Wednesday the7th: High 80 Low 50 with Scattered T-Storms 60% chance of precipitation
Thursday the 8th: High 73 Low 54 Partly Cloudy 10% chance of Precipitation
*Again, this can change but I will do my best to ask for "cool" (and that is for what you all think is cool) weather so everyone will feel comfortable in the Central Florida weather!!

I have 4 miles on tap tonight. I am have a bit of an allergy throat thinkgy going on last night and this morning so I am taking my AllegraD and vitamins and Danactive and all that. Just don't want it to become something else.

I agree with Tracy and Jeff on the weather - you just go an turn the thermostat down - LOL - I froze my DH out of the house on Sunday when I did my 20 miles and it was only on 71. LOL

On tap for 5 miles tonight after work - looks like its going to have to be on the TM since I don't get home until dark. I am actually looking forward to running a shorter distance - lol - I remember not too long ago when 3 miles was a long distance!!

Kira - That is great news that the midwife gave the ok.

You walked on the boardwalk? Nice! Still too windy for me here (I'm about an hour north of AC) with winds of 15-25 and gusts up to 40. It's 43 now, going up to 47, they say. I'll probably have to join the gym today because it's too cold to put in another 90 minutes without triggering an asthma attack.

Terri, DH said the same things about not needing a "taper" when my injury has kept me from training consistently! I wanted to get 6 in today at or close to race pace...

Woohoo, Kira! That is good news!

CarolA, that is some amazing cross training! I bet the views of the falls made it worthwhile. Sorry we won't see you at Pop! Don't wear yourself out trying to "catch up" this week, btw, you need to be in top racing form next week (and by "top racing form," I mean able to keep up with all the social events!).

Jeff, I saw today that AVA voted your path there along the coast of Oahu as the best place to walk for 2008. It is so on my list of places to see!

Tracy, warmer in the afternoons is better. I want to swim! Since I don't go in my pool here if the water is below 84, I may have a problem.... Can't wait to see you and Judy-mom!

Tricia, here I turn the heat up to 71 when I get cold. I'm currently snuggled in flannel pajamas, warm microfleece robe, warm microfleece blanket watching The bourne second movie. :) I love vacation!

AFM, again, six miles on tap today somehow. DH made me a lovely scrambled egg and turkey bacon breakfast and now we're watching a movie. Which means i have to get off the internets! :)

Catch you all later!

Kira - Congrats!!! and great news on the ok to run.

Big HELLO to everyone! Just a quick drive by for me right now.

Got in 55 min on the TM last night (plan was for 40 min - oops) then couple laps in pool followed by hot tub. Ahhhhh, gotta love the hot tub.

Have lots to do tonight after work so will add my 30 min cross for today to tomorrow's 40 min walk and all will be good. Hoping weather holds here Thurs so can get in a walk outside. Forecast is for sunny early with high of 31 so should be able to.

Will keep an eye on WDW forecast but right now is just too far out for me to believe completely. I am packing just running gear for all temps (minus the really cold weather items) so will be set.

Later!!

Not to pirate: the thread, but I wanted to respond to Debra's question about my Kindle. To oversimplify it and majorly understate it, a Kindle is an amazing piece of technology that has done for me with books what my ipod does for music -- puts over 250 books at hand in one small device PLUS it has wireless internet capacity so that I can buy new books or download free ones anytime, anywhere. The most important feature, with the continued decline in my vision is that you can increase the font size to a very large size (6 size options) and it is a lot smaller and easier to manage than a large-print book. It is AWESOME on the dreadmill or the elliptical trainer, too. :yay: I LOVE my Kindle. :cloud9:

Oh, I should probably report some training. I did 30 minutes of hill training on the recumbent bike last night. My personal trainer went to CA for the Rose Bowl, so I didn't have to get up at 4:30 this morning. :woohoo: That just means I'll need to make time to work out at home tonight. :goodvibes

Hey WISHers! Long time, no post. Crazy life around here--not a real excuse, but there it is!

Kira--Lots of congrats going out to you!

Can't believe marathon weekend is so quickly approaching. I am severely undertrained for the 1/2. No tapering here, no sirree. I've been hitting the TM hard this week and shooting for 10 miles this weekend. 4 day taper should be enough, right:rotfl: DH and I are just gonna have fun with this 1/2 and have no specific goal in mind, except to finish. Can't wait to see everyone in a little over a week.

Hello everyone!

Just got back from a 2.6 mile walk/run. I didn't strech enough and my calfs REBELLED! I had to walk one of my intervals because they were painful. Got through it. Need to work on that streching.

Keenercam, Thanks for the report on the Kindle. I would love one for travel, but right now I hear they are backordered for MONTHS~

Hmm... may have to check into changing to Avis for the rental car.

Now off to work and write a complaint letter to the runningskirt girls. I wasn't thrilled when I got the new skirt as it felt to me that it was "cheaper" Having worn it twice and washed it I now thinks its a piece of JUNKE! It's so cheaply made that there really is no "compression" in the shorts!

Have a good day!

Okay, I finally made it back to catch up--it only took me a day! :lmao: I really don't have time to be posting right now either, I'm actually pretty busy at work today--the winter is our slow time. By the way--13.5 days left of work!! :woohoo: :woohoo:

Everyone is doing so great training for the half/full marathon/s, you should all be really proud of yourselves--it's a huge accomplishment that very few people can say they have done. One of my favorite memories of the 2007 marathon (other than crossing the finish line ;) ) was a CM somewhere around The American Adventure in Epcot yelling at us as we ran past "you are doing something that less than 1% of the American population has done. You have finished a marathon". It still gives me cold chills when I think about it! :goodvibes My training for this half has been pretty non-existent--I ran a 10K on Thanksgiving Day, 8 miles on 12/13 and 10 miles on 12/28--I think I'm following Howard's training plan, except he does that with Goofy! ;) Needless to say, I'm not expecting stellar results on 1/10, but I know I will finish and I know I'll have fun--that's good enough for me right now. There is plenty of time for PR's and full's.

Kira--I am so glad that your midwife gave you the okay to run. You should stick one of those "Baby on Board" signs to your shirt! So, how are you feeling? Have you had any morning sickness?

Debra--So did all of Pittsburgh give a huge sigh of relief when Ben was released from UPMC? I cannot believe that Tomlin started the starters on Sunday, I know he wanted the win, but be smart! I can see why Hines Ward started--to get his 1,000 yards, but as soon as he got the 24 yard reception, he was done! By the way, I think you are a way cool aunt for buying the baby Steelers stuff. :thumbsup2

Terri--We will miss you marathon weekend!!! I thought about you on Sunday when the Eagles spanked the Cowboys. Sweet revenge! ;)

Dave--Were you able to get a half bib? Are you going down just for fun? Can't wait to see you again!

Duckie--Congrats on getting your 10 miler in! It was wicked windy here over the weekend too. I spent most of my 10 mile run holding my hat on and twice the wind blew my hat completely off. I'm with you though, I won't mind warmer temps for marathon weekend. Not necessarily highs in the upper 80's, like in 2007, but mid 60's would be good.

Speaking of weather, just checked Accuweather and they are reporting 61/40 on Saturday and 64/43 on Sunday.

Tricia--I cannot believe you did 20 miles on the TM!! :worship: :worship:

Jackie--2 dogs?? How exhausted are you? I like the whole being ready for a half marathon at time thing, maybe once I stop working and can figure out a schedule with Carter, I can get back on a regular training schedule and do 10 milers every weekend. It's a nice thought, anyway. :)

MLA--The purpose of an ice bath is to get as much of the lactic acid out of your muscles as possible, which will speed up the recovery process. Some people use cold water only and some use cold water and ice, kind of depends on what you can stand. What I do is get in an empty tub wearing a sweatshirt or wrapped up in a towel and then turn the cold water on and let it fill in around me. If I use ice, I keep a bowl of ice by the tub and gradually add the ice cubes in. I let the water fill up just where it's covering my legs, once I'm covered to my quads, I turn the water off and sit in the tub for 10-15 minutes. When I get out, I take a HOT shower to warm up. I have to be honest and say ice baths aren't fun, but they do make a huge difference and it will make your legs feel much better. Good luck!

Okay, I know I have missed people, but I have been working on this post for about an hour and a half--it's almost 4:00 and I still have a ton of work to do. Oh, well it will give me something to do tomorrow!

If I don't make it on here for the rest of the week--happy new year! Stay safe!!! If I don't make it on here before next Thursday--we'll see you in Walt Disney World!!!!!!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Jeff: Enjoy your R & R on Maui. (Now, why couldn't that be me?)

Carol: Jamaica for Christmas sounds lovely! I'm sorry that you're going to miss POP, and hope your have a carefree flight to Orlando. And I promise I won't tell your work that you're MIA when you're cheering at the 5K. :ssst: It'll be our little secret.

Ms. Duckie: What is it that Jeff says? He runs to eat (and because he lives in paradise)? I think your DH just has embraced his inner Jeff. And because I love to eat, too, I believe it's a wise strategy.... As is DH making you breakfast and then enjoying a movie. (And your choice of flick was?)

Kira: That's great news from your midwife. It sounds like this year's event will be one for you and DH to remember for so many reasons! So glad we get to share it with you, too!

Racy Tracy (spelled right today): "Kiss my grits?" FLO! I loved Alice! You just keep your cold-weather racewalking dance/mojo going down there in FL for me, okay? I need the incentive to keep moving. What Jackie said works for me. I mean, as long as you're taking orders and all... .(Sorry, Ms. Duckie.) Take care of that throat thingy.

Jackie: You need to do your race just to recover from the puppy shift. And the pre-trip vet/pet sitter appointments. Whew! We just met our new sitter today. My poor cats needed to take naps immediately afterward just to sleep away the trauma.

Megan: What Krista said about the ice baths. But with a bourbon (my choice), beer, or coffee in hand. I don't like them, but they work for me. No hot showers for me afterwards, but that might be because of the bourbon. And you definitely have your priorities straight--that's how I travel, too! :goodvibes

Terri: I'm following your non-taper thinking, and doing similar things. For me, it's the mental aspect as much as anything. I'm going to take it easy on race day, though, treating the marathon more like a training day (if that's possible).

Tricia: I bet you feel like it's almost decadent to do "only" five miles. Isn't it amazing how we adjust when we train? I would never have believed it. Good luck with them!

Liz: You overachiever, you! I guess you were having a good time on that TM, huh? And earned that hot-tub seat, too. :thumbsup2

Cam: Thanks for the info about the Kindle. I love my books, and will occasionally read on XT days. When the budget eases up (gee, now what would be going on in January to keep me budget-conscious) I'll be looking into "incentives" for added XT (and with Carol's information, I might have months to decide). Hmmmm. Great job on the hill training, btw.

Dave: Good price on the rental car!

Stephanie: But what will we do without taper madness? What excuse will I have to buy running gear? :confused3 :rotfl2:

Krista: Re: Pgh and Big Ben. Made front-page news, and the relief was palpable. Not that you expected anything less. ;) And what a fabulous and encouraging CM to see on the course! You're right--we should all be proud of journey we've undertaken. We're putting in the training (even if "Howard style") and going for it! And I think we're really lucky that we've made good WISH friends in the process of doing so. :goodvibes

As for me: A light day of XT for me. Like Carol has discovered about herself, I'm a slow recoverer after my LSD. Tomorrow is a RW day. Tonight, I'm thinking about pulling out the suitcase--we leave this Saturday, so maybe I should be thinking about what I'm taking, huh?

Well, I'm glad I didn't order another Minnie skirt. I bought the one with the brief underneath before they came out with that print with the shorts. I would have preferred the shorts underneath. I bought a pair of black compression shorts that I wear with it. So does the fabric seem thinner than previous skirts? I have a terrible time with all those running skirts. It's a thinner "shinier" fabric. After two wearings and washings (hang dry etc) the waistband feels too big and the shorts which originally were doing OK are NOT going to stay in place. These have VERY low lycra content for "compression shorts" (My swimsuit has more!:lmao: ) IMHO they are not going to work for me.

I did just order a pair from skirtgoddess.com I will let you know how those do!

My issue occured at least 15 years ago at the ATL airport so it's not really relevant anymore. But after waitng TWO hours in the line we then got sent outside where we were told it would be at least two MORE hours for a car! So I went back in and told them to cancel the reservation.

Next month a $500 charge on the card for this car I never saw! (And was suppose to be about $100)

My corporate TA was able to get her rep to deal with it. I said NEVER AGAIN and meant it. I will walk first!

But I did get the Avis deal. I tried again after I realized the code I was using was not the same as the one posted. Turns out it was defaulting my corp ID into the thing.

Now to run numbers. The deal didn't work until Monday. I have to go the airport Sunday anyway so I could "trade" Will have to see what I can get for Sunday and Monday (Have to have a car Sunday as I am going to visit my dad for a few hours) Hmm....

I ran my last 8 1/2 miler through Waikiki for the year. Now off to run on Maui.

It was nice where I was, but lots of heavy rain and lightning in central Oahu and the north shore.

Thanks for the Alamo deal posting! Scott just booked us a car for marathon weekend--now we're not going to be at the mercy of the dreaded Disney busses!:cool1:

dreaded buses? I feel just the opposite. I LOVE the buses and hate driving!

We spent thanksgiving at the park and most days we used buses but one day we drove and it took 30 minutes longer to get to the parks because of the lines for parking.

I left before the light show and still had a nightmare getting out of the parking lot. Give me the buses anyday!

However, a car does give you the advantage of running to a store to get water and bananas. The savings on those alone might pay for the rental...

Maura,

Thanks for the heads up on the Alamo deal. I switched from Enterprise, which was a economy size, to a premium with Alamo.

We take Magical Express in on Wednesday, I pick up the car Thursday morning at Dolphin Hotel, and return it Monday morning. Gets us to the start line of all three races, without having to catch the last 4 am bus.

We'll bus it Monday and Tuesday.

Cost of my car $58.42!

8 days to the 5K
9 days to the half
10 days to the full

Everyone have a safe New Year's Eve.

Hope everyone has a happy and safe new year. I have sworn off alcohol until after the marathon. Not sure if that is what made me feel sick last weekend but I am not taking any chances (and I only had a little because I don't really drink anyway - and still felt sick - so none until after and then bring on the Patron - well for a shot at least!!)

As for me I was only able to get in 3.5 miles yesterday. I felt a blister on the bottom of my toe and didn't want to make it worse. I was glad I got at least something in even though it was on the TM and not outside. If we get out of work early enough today then I might do 3 miles to the beach and back otherwise I will be getting it in tomorrow before I put on my small turkey and black eyed peas and ham hock.

Again happy new year WISH team - can't believe its almost 2009!!!

Happy New Year WISHers! Tomorrow marks one year that I made the decision to make exercise a regular part of my life! This is the first time I've *ever* stuck with it!

Did 3.1 on the treadmill today. Just keep visualizing running through that beautiful castle and getting that Donald medal. I can't believe it is just over a week away!!!

I'm just back from lunch at Subway. The sandwich artist must have known I was a distance runner. When I asked for mustard only, she put at least 3 times the normal amount one would like on their sandwich. LOL, I ate it, thinking it's good practice for the marathon, and that it was a magnesium boost to my system.

Did anyone catch the Food Channel's show Unwrapped, that showed the ice cream vending machine we talked about months ago? Moobella http://moobella.com/

Pretty cool machine that mixes, flash freezes, and serves fresh made ice cream in 45 seconds. I'd like to see those here, especially along my running routes!

Oooh Tracy, I like that forecast much better. I think I'll stop looking at Accuweather!

I am trying to decide if I am going to try my new cold-weather running gear out today. It's 19 degrees right now - yikes! I think I'll let it warm up a bit before I venture out.

i just finished my final LR before next weekend--10.5 miles and I have to say WOOHOO! Despite not enough sleep (listening for the kids to come in--one at 4:30, one who didn't!), I had the best run. Weather was about 20 degrees with wind of 10 mph. I took it slow--partly because the roads are not entirely clear, and partly because I really wanted this run to be good--physically and mentally. Finished in 1:45. I finally felt like a runner!

May every one's new year start out on a high note like mine did! NOW I feel like I'm ready to go and I have earned my taper.

Hi, WISH team!!!

Kira...congratulations!!

Everyone....I'm so impressed with everyone getting their last LR in, esp. some on treadmills! That's some mental toughness!!

Have a great time at WDW in just over a week! I'm sad I won't be there this year. :sad1: You'll all do just fine and have some fun stories to share when you get back.

I'm just still working on my shoulder rehab. 6 weeks since surgery...still very limited in what I can do. Hoping for a healthy 2009!

Happy New Year!!

Haouli Makahiki Hou from the island of Maui.

I didn't make it out on the midnight run last night as I had hoped. Sleep just seemed the better option.

We got up, and did our Polar Bear swim. Must have been 76 degrees out at 9:30 am when we hit the water. Probably 82 by noon. My keiki were in the pool for about 7 hours. (Roger, these are for you).

Hi Everyone!

I am off to the Doctor for a final systems check today. Unfortunately, I have a pretty sore throat so I can go in and say "I am all better now so tell my husband to quit hiding my ticket to Orlando." I don't think it will stop her from giving me the ok but it might make her run more tests. Life is hell when your paranoid husband's training partner is a doctor!

I am getting excited about the races though. And getting to see/meet everyone at the POP Century meet!

Hey WISHers. Hope everyone had a nice NYE. We stayed at home, but missed WDW badly. Last two years we spent it celebrating at WDW. DH really did a good job entertaining the kids, though. He cooked dinner!, bought fireworks and sparklers, got the kids sparkling grape juice and let them drink it in Minnie and Mickey wine glasses (They thought that was a real hoot!), made cookies with 2009 on them and ice cream sundaes and watched our old videos from the Epcot and MK NYE fireworks. I think they had fun. Still need to take down Christmas decorations... I really have so much to do before we leave Thursday! :scared:

Yesterday DH and I ran a Resolution Run 5K. I wasn't planning on running hard, it was not a chip timed event. It actually fit in perfectly with my taper. DH even ran with me, which doesn't happen too often since I'm way slower than him. Well, I ended up having a PR! :woohoo: I ran it in 31:42, a 10:11 pace. I now kinda wish I would have pushed myself a tad harder. I usually run in the 10:30 to 11:30 range so I was pleasantly surprised with myself!

On a more serious note, DH thinks he has hurt his foot in a bad way. I'm now worrying about him running the half with me. So if you could send pixie dust his way that would be great! I think he is trying to act like it doesn't bother him around me, but I keep seeing him wince and limp when he thinks I'm not looking. :headache:

Sun (Full): High 73 Low 47 Showers 60% rain
Mon: High 70 Low 46 Partly Cloudy 10% rain

Tends to be the warmest around 1-3pm and the coolest temps are around 6-7am right before sunrise.

I have my suitcases out and have started putting together stuff that I need for each day, stuff for each race (5K and Half), stuff I need for the EXPO (wavers in a folder) the nametags for the meet, the visors and hats I need to get to people. I have one extra hat and 1 extra visor that I am bringing to the meet. THe hat is 15.75 and the visor is 15.25. I will have no change with me, so the first person who shows up and wants them - I'll take cash or a check.

Hi Everyone!

The new drugs kicked in last night and I am starting to feel like the real me. There is hope that I can finish Goofy after all! I still have a massive sinus infection but the lungs sound good.

Funny story. My Doctor walked me down to the xray room and told the tech "We need to make sure she is healthy enough to kill herself next weekend." Gee thanks for the vote of confidence Doc!
Then when she sent the nurse in to give me yet another steroid shot she leaves me with "don't win - you probably won't pass a drug test!"

So I guess I am in this to win or die? Hmm I don't like either option. (Winning would be way to much work. lol)

Jeff- its winter on the main land. You are killing us with your pictures! I still think you need to open a B&R (Bed and Run)

Interesting article in my Racewalking e-newsletter:

If you add just 2000 more steps a day to your regular activities, you may never gain another pound. So says research by Dr. James O. Hill of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. To lose weight, add in more steps.

Sedentary people in the USA generally move only 2000-3000 steps a day. Previous studies have shown that moving 6000 steps a day significantly reduces risk of death, and 8000-10,000 a day promotes weight loss.

How far is 2000 steps? It is about a mile. But the benefits for health and for weight management don't depend on you walking a mile all at one time, but simply adding in more steps throughout the day.

By wearing a pedometer all day, you are motivated to add in extra steps whenever you can. There are many little trips that can add up to a mile or two a day - parking further from the door of your destination, taking the stairs rather than the elevator, pace around as you talk on the telephone, take a marching-in-place minute once an hour.

"All in all, it is entertaining to ponder that such a seemingly insignificant gadget may be of practical importance in the war on obesity!" said Catrine Tudor-Locke, Ph.D., Department of Exercise and Wellness, Arizona State University in the conclusion of a report by the President's Council of Physical Fitness and Sports, June, 2002.

Good Morning everyone!

It's dreary here. My alarm went off at 6:30 to go join the NEW Galloway Group that's training for the Country Music and ING and I WIMPED! I had really been back and forth all week on this. I figure they would only do two miles since it's the first meeting and I needed to do more. My current group was doing 11 miles, too much...

So I slept until 8:30 put on my clothes and drove to the river. Did 5.22 miles in just over an hour. Avg right around 12.26 a mile. Not bad for me. I did do a 3/1 interval which will not be what I do next Sat. I am sticking with 2/1.

I then got VERY BRAVE and took "kind of" an ice bath. I took the ice out of the freezer, poured it in the tub, ran cold water and when it looked like it would cover the back half of my legs got in. Actually not as bad as I imagined, but I probably didn't have enough ice. I figure it's the back of my calfs that always SCREAM so lets try this... And sadly I think it helped... Not sure how much of that I can take, but I may try again next Sat so I can enjoy the parks more!

Jeff, those photos make me so jealous!

Lenshan, when are you leaving Thursday? Are you flying? Maybe we will run into each other at the airport! LOL! I have the 12:30 flight.

Cecelia, Tell your Doc we won't let you kill yourself.

Wish I could make the POP meet, but the boyfriend gets in late and we have to go pick up his stuff. Plus I think he might have a cardiac arrest moment. I have told him about this group, but I don't think he gets it!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Cecilia, I do WISH that you will be much better for this weekend. You've got to be! You'll do well, just don't push out too fast.

Jeff, ugh on those pics. You are killing us here. (ok, well, really they are nice)

Carol, good job getting out there and then in the cold water. A trick I learned from someone here is to sit in the cold water with a sweatshirt and a hot cup of tea. Works wonders! I just do mostly cold water as we get really cold water out of our taps here on the North Coast.

And, thanks for the pedometer info.

See everyone next weekend! Wow!

I guess I didn't report in on this thread yesterday. I did a 9 miler - didn't quite make it to 10 but the 9 felt good. Well that was after I got past the first 2 miles. Jeff, you are always teasing us with those photos! I must say, I am amazed at how much fun you pack into a single day! Your princesses are lucky girls. Can't wait to see you next week! Woohoo!

Tracy: We're almost there! How is your mom doing? Is she ready? DH was asking if she would be walking with all of us, too, but I said only for the 5k (that's right, right?). See you in less than a week!

Allyson, hope you got through the 3 miles on the treadmill yesterday! Maybe we'll see you around the YC/BC next weekend! :)

Cecilia, I'm so glad you feel like the drugs are finally working. Do you saline rinse your sinuses? As much as I hated to try it (I was afraid of drowning--my DH shook his head and said, "I doubt your doctor would tell you to do it if it would drown you. It would be bad for business."), I found it helped more than the drugs for cleaning out my sinuses and more importantly for me, to help with the post-nasal drip (ewww). Regardless, I hope you are on the mend for the festivities next week! :) PD to you! :wizard:

Shannon: PD to your husband! :wizard: I hope his foot is okay. Well done on the PR, btw! :woohoo: DH took the decorations down on New Year's Day so that we could have the house ready for our weekend away next week--I hate un-decorating. Sounds like your DH made NYE super-special! See you next week!

CarolA: Sorry you won't be at POP! My DH didn't understand about the WISH group either, but then I brought him to the Minnie meet. Now he asks about our WISH friends all the time! Well done on getting your steps in, btw.

Lily: Thank you for the hints on making an ice bath more bearable. I'm afraid of the very thought of an ice bath, but after not being able to get out of bed the morning after the Minnie, I think I need to try it! We booked the BC so that we can walk back after the half, too, in an effort to avoid a repeat of last year (although I think I did provide Liz and Pat a good laugh!).

Tricia: We tried to take photos of our walk, but it was so cold we had to cut it short. Great job getting those miles in! We'll be in WDW before we know it!

AFM, it was supposed to be 41 degrees but it was about 35 and windy. We got a mile in and DH said he thought it was a bad idea. I wasn't wearing a scarf :sad2: and my throat was starting to get sore from the cold. Even though I had used my inhaler, it was hard to breathe. So we'll mall walk tomorrow instead. Not ideal but better than not walking. And we only have a few days left to taper!

Can't wait to see everyone next week. One week from this moment, I'll (hopefully) be basking in the glow of a Donald medal. :)
