View Full Version : Linda's Wii Fit Experiment

I am starting a new journal, even before the new year! Considering all my others have documented utter failure, I decided to start fresh.
Our family got a wii fit for Christmas. Me and my son have been trying it out. I read all the reviews on it and it seems like people really like it, yet the "fitness experts" say you can't get a really good workout on it. I beg to differ, at least so far.
I have been doing exercises from each of the categories each day, and that is my current goal. 30 mins at least per day. The categories are Yoga,Strength, Aerobics, and Balance. Most time is spent on Aerobics. Be advised the time calculated is actual time doing the activity, not time elapsed. It would probably take at least 45 mins to do 30 timed.
I am really chubby, and my mii really blimped out when I did the Body check. I think some people get bugged by this, but to those people I say, get a grip! It's really quite funny. I am way up on the fatty chart too. The documentation is awesome. It keeps up with all your data, you don't have to do a thing. The is also an Activity Log to add other exercises you do. You can password it, so that other users can't see your info, so no need to stress over that. My wii age was 40 twice when I have calculated it. So that, though completely meaningless, made me feel better (I'm 47).
The Aerobics part has a hula hoop game, a step game and a running game. On the hula game you can definitely feel it in your abs. I was surprised. The step game is kind of fun. Its not hard, but I did it about 5 or 6 times in a row and that made it worthwhile. As you do it more, they open different levels that are harder, faster, or longer in duration. For the running part it is running in place. Some people dont like that, but this game has you "following" another person so you keep pace. If you go too fast someone will trip you. Kinda funny.
The yoga stuff has some difficult ones, and some easy. It tracks where your body is and if you are shaking. The strength kind of does the same. I can't do some of the strength ones. Literally got zero points a few times, but hopefully I will get stronger. The balance has some fun games, including a skiing one that I am starting to get the hang of.
I am , of course, also going to start a new diet. I have been horrible over the holidays, and at least to start I am just plain eating less. Simplifying with sandwiches and soup. I have to watch my carbs always, that is just a given. But I am not, at least for now, doing a regimented lo-carb or no-carb diet. Just adding more lean protein and whole grains.
So thats my plan, doing the wii fit, adding some extra cardio to the activity log and eating less, and healthier.

Hey, Linda!! I was thinking about you the other day and wondering if you had left us completely. I'm glad to see you back. I also think it is too funny that you are doing the WII Fit thing, because I was about to start a challenge around that also! :cool1: We have decided to use our Christmas money on a WII, so I'm going to give myself challenges so that I can "earn" a WII Fit over the next two months or so. I'm so Jealous! I want a Wii Fit now! I'll just have to live vicariously through you until I get mine. It sounds like a great variety and some pretty good exercise too!!
Well, I look forward to hearing how it is all going! Maybe we can start a fresh new year and get back on the right track once and for all!! I'm starting a new journal also, but probably not until the 1st.
Have a great week!!

Hi Amber! I haven't been around, I know. Mostly because I have been so busy, and also I have not been very good on any of my goals. So I need a mulligan.
I bid my vacation next year, and for the first time in 23 years I got 2 weeks off at Christmas. So I am going to Disney. My Dad used points and got me a 2 bedroom condo timeshare in Orange Lake Resort, which is right behind Animal Kingdom. We are staying there for a week, and then going to Universal, staying 4 nights at Portofino Bay. 11 Days! Anyway, thats my motivation. I have a year.
We are still in leftover mode here, so I am not doing very well on food yet.
B- Cinnamon roll
L- leftover stuffing and ham
D- ham casserole
The only thing left is ham right now though, so I should be okay soon.
I have to go back to work tomorrow after having a few days off. Some people are ready to go back after vacation, but not me. I only have 26 months and 25 days left though.
For the wii fit I did 1 hour and 3 mins today. 15 mins on advanced step, 10 mins on free step. 8 mins on hula hoop. I also did the ski jump, ski slalom, snowboarding, penguin slide, and river balance bubble. In Yoga I did half moon, chair, and palm tree. In strength I did tricep curl, and leg and arm lift.
My wii fit age today was 34.

Hi, I'm glad to read your journal! I also got the Wii Fit for Christmas and have been using it. I really like it since I live in the Midwest and when I get home at night I don't have a lot of motivation to go BACK out in the cold to the gym. :goodvibes
I agree with your observation...the Hula Hoop really does work you out; I'm just glad that no one can see me do it, I know it must look hysterical! I also really like the stepping; I know it's not that high impact but it's a nice warm up. I'm hoping to use it more this week so I can bank more time and earn more activities :)
Keep us posted! I'll be excited to hear how you do!
(Sidebar, but a funny story; my brother is 19 and was over this weekend trying out the Wii. He set up a profile on the Fit and even though he is normal / healthy in the weight range, it gave his Fit age as 33 :goodvibes The board flashed the age and then said something like "Do you find yourself tripping a lot?" He just wasn't hot at the balance at all and so they knocked him for that. It was even funnier b/c when he was younger my parents joked that they need a padded room for him, he was such a klutzy kid!)

I too have a WiiFit, but I haven't been using it enough.
I find the Mii blimping out as it records my weight humourous, and I hope to get out of the obese category and into the overweight one by March. I find the WiiAge part funny, because it can be all over the place. I'm 36 actually, but my WiiAge has been anywhere from 57 to 21. :lmao:
I love the hula hoop and the boxing. So far, my focus has been on the aerobics ones, with the odd balance or yoga thrown in. I need to focus on regular commitment to exercising.

We got a Wii for Christmas, too! They are bowling right now, but when the kids go to bed, I am getting the Wii Fit out and figuring it out, too. Last night we were playing doubles tennis and I was a little stiff this morning!!
So, tell me about these journals you are all mentioning. Are you keeping track of activity? calories? what? Is it an actual book? Thanks.

Hi guys! I was back to the old grind today at work! I got home at just before 7pm and I went downstairs to do the wii fit and my son was using it! He wouldn't let me because he was breaking records on the ski jump. He has 4 stars on that one. Anyway, I had to wait awhile.
So my food today was unimpressive, but not tooo terrible..
B- smart ones breakfast sandwich
s- cheese crackers
L-lean cuisine pizza
S- sugar free pudding
D- wheat chex
S- weight watchers muffin
I did 1 hour of wii fit activities. I did 15 min advanced step, advanced hula hoop, boxing! twice (my first try, this I like!) and the short run. In balance I did several, slalom skiing long version, snowboarding, ski jump, balance bubble, lotus, and penguin slide. Yoga I did half moon, chair, warrior, palm tree and another i cant think of yet. In strength I did plank, triceps, arm and leg lift, side leg lift.
Anyway, I am tired. I was very impressed with the boxing.

Hey, Linda! I forgot to say how Awesome it is that you are getting your two weeks off at Christmas this coming year!! :cheer2: :cheer2: Your preliminary plans sound great! We stayed at Orange Lake when I went w/ my family years ago. It is a really nice place and not far away at all!
Sounds like you are doing great at getting a variety of different exercises in with the Wii Fit. Who knew a video game could be such great exercise? :thumbsup2
Keep it up, you are keeping my motivation growing to get my year kicked off right!

Good to hear good stuff about Orange Lake! It looks nice, and we have always done well at my dads timeshares, so I'm sure it will be fine. It looks humongous though. There is also a publix very near, so we can get or groceries and cook a little.
I was wondering about what to do for christmas eve and christmas day though. I have no experience with this. I heard something about a processional so I need to do research.
Now for my stuff. On tuesday night my son had his gf over and was watching movies on my tv that the wii is on, so I didnt get to do it. Last night I didn't have time, So I already missed 2 days! But today I was off work, so I did it.
I only did 40 mins today, but it was almost all cardio. I did the advanced step 5 times in a row. I think people are possibly getting too caught up in the "step"term. I think it is a very good workout, if you do it like I do several times in a row. The step itself is not high, so you don't get the additional work from that, but just consider it like a regular aerobics class (dance type), which also involves taking lots of steps. I also noticed that it makes a difference in how high you step, and you need to put toe down first to get a lot of "perfects". Somehow the balance board can tell if you are distributing you weight right after the bigger step..hard to explain but try it and see. I get 3 stars on this consistently. Next I did the super hula hoop. I have moved up on this one to 6 mins. It works your abs pretty well. Then I did the boxing twice. I have unlocked the advanced one on this but its more complicated so for now I am just doing this one twice. Once again, the scoring seems to vary on how hard you are punching and stepping on the board. Very sharp quick punches seem to score better, which makes sense. As I get better at this I think it will be the one I spend more time on. It not only makes you sweat, it definitely helps your arms. Mine are sore.
I only did 2 balance things today, the long ski slalom and the snowboarding. I didn't get any yoga or strength exercises done. I didnt do my wii fit age today, I will do that tomorrow. I will also check in with any weight loss or gain. My graph is horribly skewed right now. I had a 6 lb weight gain between the first and second day. I think there may have been an error on the first days weight, because it has stayed up there since, with just slight variations. I don't think even I can gain 6 lbs overnight.
I haven't been feeling well. My stomach. And chills. I had leftover ham and swiss for lunch and maybe it was too old. Seemed ok, but whatever. So all I have eaten today is that, an atkins shake, and a couple of pieces of cheese.

Hi Luvbaloo! I do feel at least a little better today. I am off work so I have taken it easy mostly today. I did do lots of wii fit though.
First food
B- 2 eggs
L-atkins shake
S- sugar free fudgegsicle
D- cheeseburger w/out bread and cottage cheese
S- another fudgesicle
Now for my nunbers
This is scary, but I am gonna put my weight and BMI, since thats what it tracks.
I am throwing out the first day, since it is so far off the others
Start BMI- 38.63 current 38.13
Start Wt- 218.0 current- 215.2
BMI= -.5
Wt= -2.8
My workout today: I decided since I had plenty of time to do them in order as they are on the game. In a day where I have to work I will do aerobics first to get it over with.
I started with Yoga. I did Half Moon, Triangle, Downward facing dog, Chair, and Palm Tree. Once each.
Next was Strength. I did Single leg extension, Lunge, Sideways leg lift, Arm and leg lift (20 reps each) and triceps extension.
Then was Aerobics. I started with Basic Run, long version, then I did Rhythm Boxing, 3 times, Super Hula Hoop, long version, then Advanced Step, 3 times.
Then I did Balance. I did Slalom Skiing, advanced, Ski Jump and Snowboarding, advanced. I sucked at each of these today. I was pretty tired by the time I got to them though.
I did 1 hour 4 mins of workout, but it took almost 2 hours.
I am kind of tired.

Keep up all of your hard work!
My knees hurt a little from the hula hoop. I have to concentrate on swiveling at the hip and not twisting at the knee. My hips hurt when I do the arm and leg lifts in the strength workout. I think I will have to just do 10 reps until I get stronger.

I passworded mine too. Of course I just reported it on here.:lmao:Wait til you gain weight and the balance board makes you say why.
I have to work tonight, so I did my wii fit this morning and I only did aerobics this time.
I started with Basic Run, long version. I still haven't unlocked the "island Run yet. Then I did Rythym Boxing, 4 times. The I did the Super Hula Hoop, 6 mins. I unlocked the 10 min version, so I can do that next time. Then I did Advanced Step, 3 times. 37 mins all together.
My plan for tonight at work is to walk the stairs, or at least part of them. It is 21 floors to the tower and I used to do that 4 times a day. No way I can manage that, but I will try to do some.
I haven't eaten anything yet, but heres the plan.
B- eggs
S- cheese stick
L- tuna
D-lean pocket
S- pudding
I know that is horrible, but I am severely grocery challenged and completely broke until tuesday!

Good morning guys! I didnt eat exactly what i said yesterday. I found I had some chicken wings in the freezer so I had those for dinner instead of the lean pocket.
I got up and did wii fit this morning. Started with Island Run, 10 mins, then I did the Super Hula hoop , 10 mins. Then it was Boxing, 4 times. Well 3 1/2 times. The nunchuck messed up in the middle of one session and I had to mess with it for a bit. Then I did the free step, 10 mins. Anyway, I ended up with 49 mins, all aerobic.
I have to go to work today, so I wont have a chase to do any more.
Food for today( in theory).
B- eggs
S- fudgesicle
L- hard boiled egg and cottage cheese
D- wings
S- pudding
One small story real quick. I am totally irritated with my mom. My son, who's 17 has been in Kansas City for several days. He leant my mom his car while he was gone because hers was in the shop. He is flying in today. Today is the big UK-UL basketball game. We have tickets, they are my moms but I pay for half every year so that Kevin can go with her to the games. His flight arrives at 3:40. The game is at 4:30. The airport is literally across the expressway fron the arena. You take short bridge acroos to it. I asked her to pick him up and then go to the game. She said there would be too much traffic and they would miss the first half. I argued that I didnt see how they would, maybe a minute or two. Anyway, she agreed to do it.
Late last night he called me. My mom had called him and told him that he needed to take a cab to the game instead. She didnt call and ask me. She just called him. Granted, it will probably be ok. He is only 17 though and has never taken a cab. He will have to take his luggage, find his car in a huge parking lot, and put his luggage in it. Then go to willcall, where she is leaving his ticket. Just because she is afraid there will be traffic. I am disgusted. I really dont like the idea of him flying in and no one being there to greet him when he gets off the plane. But hey, as long as its easier for her. Whatever.

I had a day shift today so I got home around 7. I was pretty tired, but I did do my workout, so I'm proud of myself for that.
Today I did Free Run, for 10 mins, Super Hula hoop, 10 mins, Boxing 2 times, and Free Step, 20 mins. I ended up with 49 mins total today, all aerobic again. I think that is what I have to concentrate on on work days.
Food today
B-hard boiled egg
S-cottage cheese
L- lean pocket
S- pudding
D- tomato soup
S- rice chex cereal
S- atkins shake
I think thats only around 1000 calories. I really haven't been eating that much which makes me think I should be losing some weight, but I showed a gain again today! It's not official until friday though. We'll se what it says then.

Way to stick with it! :thumbsup2 I'm impressed you are doing a long workout after a day of work. :worship: If you aren't doing your weight at the same time each day, you could be seeing variations just from time of day. I usually weigh in before exercising, and if it seems out to me, just weigh again at the end. I've seen 2 lb variations in 10min.
I managed to do 25 min on the exercise bike today which was 7km so I'm happy with that. I set the resistance down lower so I could go longer.

Hi Luv baloo. I do have to weigh myself at different times because of my work schedule. I have weird shift work and it messes me up.
I am taking a break tonight and not doing the wii. This is my quick turn day and I have to get up really early, so I am gonna watch some tv and do the stairmaster for a few minutes.

I did do the stairmaster for 15 mins on tuesday night before bed. Wenesday I did nothing. I got up at 4 am, and made it through an entire day with evil supervisor, but I was wiped out by the end of the day, and I then had to do a bunch of "mom" stuff.
Today I did better. It was my day off, and I thought I was going to the movies, but didn't (thats tomorrow). I ran errands, spent money I don't have and did my wii fit.
I decided to move the treadmill in front of the tv and see if the wii running would work while I did the tread mill. I am not very good at running in place, so I usually run all over the basement in little circles, and thought this might work better. It worked fine. I did the free run, 20 mins. The treadmill made the wii think I was going faster than I was though. That little mii was truckin! :lmao:. Then I did free step for 20 mins. I did the free because you can start, then change the channel and watch tv, and the wii keeps track still. So I was watching Devil wears Prada during this part. Then I did the 10 min super hula hoop, then the boxing, 3 times. 63 mins total, all aerobic. I can't do anymore tonight because the football championship game is on and there are kids in the basement watching it.
Food today so far
B- hard boiled egg
L- 2 bowls tomato soup
S- whole wheat bagel and weight watchers cream cheese
S- 3 hershey kisses
D- not sure yet, maybe some whole wheat pasta?
anyway, I have to weigh in tomorrow. I think I will have a very slight weight loss (bases on today). Wish me luck!

Hi Amber and Shannon!
I went to see Bride Wars today! The critics totally panned it, but I liked it! I laughed a lot! It probably helped that I was with a friend I have known for 35 years and I was in both her weddings! Anyway, we had lunch at Buckheads. I wasn't good. But at least it was their smaller lunch portions. I had salmon fettucine alfredo. It was delish! I skipped breakfast because I knew I was going, so I am not that freaked out by it.
So my food today was
B- nothing
L- salmon fettucine alfredo
D- weight watchers smart ones pizza
S- adkins bar
S- banana
thats 560 cals without the alfredo. I havent found it yet but I will keep looking.
exercise
I did 30 mins free running on the treadmill, using the wii. Then I did 20 mins free step. then 10 mins super hula hoop, then finally boxing twice. 69 mins total.
Its weigh in day. I can't believe I actually post this!:scared1:
BMI-37.81 Weight- 213.4
So thats BMI- -.32
Weight- -1.8
loss since started BMI- -.82
Weight- -4.6

Going to see if I can find the calorie counter I used to use.

I watched my team win in OT over Notre Dame last night and it was awesome Go Cards! This may be their year!
Tonight was my sons Jazz concert and it was wonderful too.

Well I have had a busy week. My food was good until today. I went out to lunch with a friend at panera bread. I had chicken noodle soup and a bagel. The bagel was big though, so I think it was probably 400 cals or so. We went and saw Doubt at the movies. It was good, but not great. eh. Not the kind of ending I was looking for. Save it for video. Then I had popcorn later for a snack. Way too many carbs for me.
Anyway, I have been exercising, but it has been the stair machine all week. Tomorrow I will do the wii fit and my weigh in. I don't feel good about it right now, but that may just be the popcorn!

As long as it keeps going down I will be okay. I really didn't get as much done this week as I wanted, even though the diet was pretty good. 3 weeks 5.5 lbs is okay.
Today I was running around doing errands all day. Yesterday too. I wasn't that successful either. My sister is in Abu Dhabi and she emailed me with a wish list of stuff they don't have there. Basic stuff. Miracle Whip. Secret unscented. That kind of thing. Well she wanted long sleeve shirts, those mock turtleneck kind they have at Kohls. She didnt think she would need them there but it gets chilly at night. Well, even though it was exactly zero degrees here today, all the stores have put away the winter stuff already. This makes me crazy. And those kind of shirts you can wear almost all year here, they are lightweight! Anyway, I finally found exactly 2 in the right size and they are this ugly turquois color. I hope she doesnt mind. That made me tired, and I think I am also catching something. I don't have time to get sick now, so I have to shake it off!
BTW, my son , who was failing trig, brought his grade up to a B. I am very proud of him, he really toughed it out.

Hope you feel better :goodvibes
That's great that your son's hard work paid off with his trig grade. :thumbsup2
Your right on target for a healthy maintainable weight loss. After 2 weeks, I'm down 3.2. I aiming to lose 2lbs a week, so I'm a little behind right now, but next week will be better.
