I have some small top heavy trees(about 8 foot tall) and when it was raining and the wind was blowing yesterday, they were bent way over..Would it hurt them if i trimmed the branches off this time of year... guess it doesn't matter now since i already did it, but was just wondering..

Trimming branches from trees is usually very healthy for the trees. Branches that rub each other, hang to low or just do not look right should be trimmed. As far as when to trim, who knows every tree is different. As long as the cut is clear and close to the main trunk there should be no problem. It's early enough in the spring that the cut should heal.

I've heard early spring is best but I had the tree trimmers come in early September do to the job with no bad side effects to the trees.
