I really hate to ask this question, but I've just been wondering about this.

I booked coach seats on this upcoming trip. Sometimes we go coach and other times we have gotten a sleeper. I prefer the sleeper, but I don't mind coach and we needed to save the additional money on this trip.

Anyway, I am completely fine with doing coach, but was just wondering if anyone has ever had the experience of being "upgraded" from coach to a sleeper?

well, we weren't upgraded from coach, but we were offered an upgrade from the standard sleeper to the family sleeper (only the two of us). we did have to pay about $50, i think, so it wasn't free. and this was a train arriving in lorton on thanksgiving day, so it was pretty empty.

It won't be a complimentary upgrade, but if any sleeper space remains unsold at the time of departure (or, on conventional Amtrak trains, even en-route) it can be offered to coach passengers at steep discounts. It is possible to upgrade after departure (check with the conductor; your car attendant can direct you), but by then nothing would likely be available. If you want to try for an upgrade, ask at check-in about available sleeper space and, if offered anything appealing, take it on the spot. Obviously, it would help to check in early.
