Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

Good Morning Team: :surfweb: I'm going to try to stay in touch with my friends over here a little more. I can't guarantee that I can keep up with the fast moving thread, but I'll try.

Yesterday, I had an 8.67 mile LR through deep slush and snow. It was tough sledding and slow going. It took me almost 90 minutes for over a 10 mpm pace. I had to stop and walk often because my legs were tired from running in the snow. I also had to walk to get out of the way of cars and snow plows.

Jeff- I need to come run in Hawaii. You probably don't have to deal with the winter wonderland. Thanks for starting the thread.

Well I've always viewed the trek to my family home in Massachusetts and back to Michigan again as a marathon, so it is only fitting that my solo drive to MA yesterday took 13.1 hours--no kidding. The weather stunk from Schenedctady to Danvers, but for once the border crossing was not an ordeal.

So at least I'm here and now it's time to go XT--dog walking in the snow!

Have a great Sunday, all!

I am from Collegeville PA, and wish I had found you sooner. I have been training alone all year (18 mi yesterday in 30 deg chill) with little outside encouragement and am looking forward to meeting many of you at the marathon weekend.:yay:

Welcome Goofy393! Can't wait to meet you in a few weeks (YIKES, it's getting close!)

As for me, I won't be reporting much this week. I am going to Jamica for Christmas. Where it's suppose to be 80 degrees and SUNNY! YES!

Still sore from the horrid run yesterday, but not too bad.

Dave - Sounds like my run yesterday. I had on a pair of Ice and Snow grips on my shoes and I still felt like I was off balance. I really wasn't use to it so I got tired pretty easily - ended up taking lots of walking breaks. Too many actually because I really started to get cold, especially my hands.

Jackie - Sorry to hear about Mystic

Goofy393 - :welcome:

AFM - It's warmer today but there haven't been any road or sidewalk ploughs by my neighbourhood yet. I will probably do my 5 miles on the TM.

Dave,

This was 5:46 pm Saturday from my lanai.

I'm headed out to my Honolulu Marathon Clinic's last talk & run of the year, followed by a picnic. My two Princesses are riding bikes while I run. I'll post photos of Waikiki area this afternoon.

Hi Goofy! I'm just over in Eagleville. Not too far from you at all. I'm still relatively new to running. Nice to see somebody who is so close by.

Hello WISHers!!

Jeff: My wild and crazy friend - thanks for starting the weekley thread!! Nice photo. BTW the tree needs lights/ornaments and a star!!

Dave: Just think how much easier it will be in FL running, no snow to slow you down. You'll be flying over the course!!

Maura: So sorry about the 13.10 hours of driving - UGH! I can barely stand 9 hours.

Goofy393: :welcome: We're always glad to meet new people. Please, Please come by and introduce yourself on race morning. Just look for bright lime green shirts with WISH on them over by the W tent. Maybe you could come by the WISH meet at the POP Century Food Court area on Friday around 4:30pm.

Carol: Have a blast in the Bahamas - could've just come down here to S.FL high today was 81 degrees!!

Vicky: I hoping sending you some pixiedust: will help the ploughs to come your way!!

AFM: I did my 13.10 miles (half before the half) this morning. Relaxed with some chocolate milk after that. Did my "ice bath" in the 68 degree water of my pool. Now I am official TAPER. Yeah me!!

Have a good Sunday everyone!!

Hi, everyone.

My training sucks. We've had terrible weather, I'm over-extended with a school production that is on Tuesday, I've spent today baking cookies (with DH who is really impatient with cookie baking), and my uncle just called to tell me that he is bringing two more people to Christmas eve dinner. That means that the dinner I planned and shopped for, for seven people, is now for TWELVE people. Of course, we are doing seafood (which is why I think we have extra guests), but it is getting very expensive. I'm also doing the dinner for Christmas day and am ready to cry at this point.

I suppose I need to look over my menu, make adjustments, and start assigning people to bring stuff.

Hope everyone is having a good Sunday.

Just a quick drive-by. I should be upstairs getting the Christmas tree finished.
Goofy393 – Welcome!!!!!!
I finally got my long run in yesterday. Since my training has been lacking I decided to do 16 miles today. What fun on the treadmill since they have them maxing out at 60 minutes per use. I wound up getting in 16.87 miles when all was said and done. I actually got a non-race PR today and took 13:32 off my San Antonio PR and broke the 3 hour mark by 52 seconds. My knees are a little stiff right now and I got a couple of blisters on my feet. Some dummy forgot to Body glide his feet.

Wow! What a deal we got. The first annual Crocs sale was awesome.

The regular style were $5 for kids sizes, $10 for adult sizes. Specialty styles like the fur lined, and "Topsider" styles were $15. Every make was available except Disney Mickey Ears sold at the parks. T-shirts were $3.

At least 300 people were there during the hour we shopped around. Great Christmas presents if you knew the sizes to buy for family and friends.

The lowdown from the company rep was, new models are being released in 2009, so they are clearing out all their current inventory.

We got 6 pairs, two t-shirts for a total of $61. :woohoo:

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg92/mkymsehi/DSCN6313.jpg

Well we had to go back today and check if the sale got any better. Let me tell you, it did.

The original style Crocs dropped from $10 to $5. The "dress" shoe style for my daughter went from $5 to $3. I couldn't pass up on those deals so we got more.

This time we got 9 pair for $51.

Jackie,

I should have ordered a case of small, medium, large, and extra large WISH Crocs. But shipping them to WDW would have eaten up all the profits, and likely cost me some chump change. :lmao:

Jeff- are Crocs made in Hawaii or something? I'm so jealous.

Not much news here except snow, snow, and more snow. Schools are closed today, and the New York Thruway is closed too. Maybe I'll try to get out and do some running loops around the neighborhood.

getnthinr
12-22-2008, 06:11 AM
Jeff, I'll definitely join others in the Croc envy. I never liked the original style, but I love the "flip-flop" style -- the double-thick heel is just what the doctor ordered (literally) for my Achilles tendonitis. By the time I added the flight to Hawaii to the price of my Crocs, though, I guess it wouldn't have been such a good deal. ;)

Haven't read the posts from last week's thread yet (working, working, family, working, church, working...) but I barely survived my 20-miler over the weekend. It's good that I've actually completed a marathon before (one a little over a month ago, in fact) because my last long "run" (walk) certainly didn't contribute to my confidence level in my upcoming Goofy. :sad2: I had a great time at the Run to Victory Half the first week in December and thought meeting Jeanne, her DH, and Jackie for the "20 on the 20th" would pretty much be a moving party for me. Instead, for reasons I cannot fathom, after about 10 miles I felt exhausted and it was all I could do to simply finish the 20. Not at all what I expected, and really quite disturbing. I'm trying to shake it off though and I'll focus on getting some rest and some quality shorter distances in over the next couple of weeks. That's what makes the marathon a challenge -- you never know what the day will bring.

Happy training, all! Can't wait to see everyone!!!

Good Day all! My SIL and I got in 12 miles on Saturday. The last 6 were slower than the frist 6, but overall pace was 15:39. It's less than 16 mpm so I'll take it! I took my first ice bath. Not too bad w/ a towel and some hot chocolate. I was tired in the afternoon and had planned on a nap, but went to see Beverly Hills Chiuahua instead. (I'm sure I spelled that wrong!) My only issues are my feet, but they are always an issue. I'm glad it's over and I'm in official taper now! That's the first time I've been able to say that! lol!

Jackie...Sorry to hear about your dog.

Goofy...Welcome!

Jeff congrats on teh PR!

Jackie - COngrats ont eh 20-miler. That's way too much time to think when you had such decisions to make. I am so sorry about mystic. SHe's happy and not suffering now, though. While it was the toughest decision fro you, it was liekly the best for her. :grouphug:

:guilty: Weather took my 20-miler down to a 12.86 miler. 3 hours.

Really stunk. I have never felt cold to teh core, though adn that scared me. So, called it quits. Head nknows it was a wise move, but my heart feels like I failed. I know we'll be ok for marathon, though. We've put in some really tough miles.

Carrie - I totally understand where you are coming from. Saturday was insanely cold over here and I gave up 6 miles into my 9 miler. My gloves weren't thick enough and I thought my hands were going to fall off. That's just one of the downfalls of winter training so don't feel badly. Can I say I'm very impressed that you were out there for 3 hours :)

Jackie -

Wendy - Congrats on the 20 miler!

Jeff - Wow! That's a lot of Crocs :)

Stacey - WTG! I still have one more LR before I start my taper!

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb: Snow day here yesterday. I stayed home and worked from home, but that also consisted of going out to do some last minute Christmas shopping. I went for a run in the late afternoon when it warmed up to nearly 20 degrees. I put the "yaktrax" on my shoes, and did 3 loops around my neighborhood for 3.75 miles.

Jeff- I had to take some pictures for you. To contrast my running conditions with yours.

Here's my neighborhood...
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f135/dparfitt1/IMG_0056.jpg

I told my girls, DD7 pooh: and DD10 princess:, that they could throw snowballs at me as looped past the house. This caused the neighbor boys to come over and join in.

audra2008 (You have to pick fedex 2 day for this to work.). They also have a ton of other styles in outlet, including the plain Mickey Crocs.

I have a sinus infection. Trying to gather myself up to at least run a short run. I'm supposed to run 12 on Friday. Doc called me in a prescription yesterday. :hippie:

Kristi, I know that those compression thingies are difficult to put on, but they are quite helpful. Hope you can get used to them. Nice light show I'm sure the neighbors love it.

Jeff, man, that is a pile of Crocs!

I haven't gotten my last LR in and would love to still. If not, I guess I'll have to struggle through with what I've got. I'm not certain that this year I will make it, but I'll at least step off to try. If I don't get through it is simply my own fault.

Dave, Happy Birthday. Do you get a party, or it's a two-fer with Christmas?

Deb, who are you, and what are you doing on these boards? :lmao: Welcome back sistah.

It was 82 degrees out at 5:15 pm, brrrrr.

I did 8 1/4 miles on the beach of Waikiki. It was a sand workout, and checked out all the people watching the sunset. While they were sucking down Mai Tai's and Pina Colada's, they were watching me plod along through the sand.

Happy 4-0, Dave! As a recent "Big Birthday" celebrant (5-0, but not in Hawaii!), I can tell you it will all be okay. Just breathe deeply!

Debra Good to see you! Are you joining us in January?

Jeff Congrats on the water heater...and check the Test Track thread--you're in!

Allyson Yeah for 40. I'm in Danvers now hoping to get in a run today between picking up DH at airport and cooking the prime rib for dinner.

Everyone Don't forget to put out the milk and cookies for Santa tonight. In my case, they will probabkly have to be place on top of the fridge---the only place my dog can't reach!

Mel - Haven't even been to the grocery store yet, so can you add 3 plates for lunch?

Debra - GREAT to "see" you!

Jeff - It's a balmy 42 right now. And that's the warmest it's been for 3 days. I still can't get motivated to run. DH would be so jealous - he's been dying to put a solar water heater in for years!

I promised the vet I'd pay off the bill and wait till after marathon weekend... but friends of ours found a puppy who'd been abandoned by the side of the road, and they've decided that it's too much for them with the dog and cat they already have so they're trying to find it a good home... and they've offered to let us have a trial run, AND keep it for us while we're in WDW... and she looks just like Mystic did as a puppy... anyone want to place a bet on whether our household has a new dog for Christmas? Those of you on Facebook can see her picture... (I absolutely refuse to post it here until she's official!)

Mel--Whatcha making? I can be in FL in about 16 hours. :goodvibes

Debra--Good to see you again! I can't wait to officially meet you in 2 weeks!

Jackie--Crossing my fingers the puppy works out for you.

You'll notice a total lack of training being reported. I did a 10K on Thanksgiving and a 8 miler on 12/14 and that's about it. The half marathon is going to be lots of FUN! Oh well, only 2 half weeks, 2 full weeks, and 1 day and I will be a stay at home mommy with lots of time to train. :goodvibes

Have a very Merry Christmas everyone and we'll see you in 2 weeks!!!!

By the way, please tell me I am not the only person who had to come into work today.

Mel--Whatcha making? I can be in FL in about 16 hours. :goodvibes

I would love to spend Carter's first Xmas with him :lovestruc

We're having ham, turkey, squash casserole, sweet potato casserole, mashed taters, broccoli salad, spinach salad, cheese ball, black bean dip, veggie tray and rolls. We have monkey bread and mini quiches for breakfast. There's a big Amish/Mennonite community here so Grandma Yoder makes my pies (chocolate, peanutbutter and apple)...I just can't make peanut butter pie like my grandma used to. Grandma's stuffing recipe died with her too...we havent had stuffing at Xmas in 20 years.

It's gonna be 80 degrees tomorrow so you can all come to the beach afterward. Made my run this morning interesting...67 degrees, 87% humidity.:scared: I had a hard time getting my legs worked out and stumbled and stuttered through the first few miles. To save the run, did the last mile with no intervals in 11:11. I think that's a one mile PR for me!

I won't likely be back before the festivities...hope you and yours have happy wonderful joyous holidays.:grouphug:

Did you end up getting a Half bib? I remember reading you were looking for one.

Mel - That sounds sooooo goooood. I hope everyone enjoys the food you prepare. People often forget to thank those that did the cooking. So I would like to thank you!

It's warm here (40's) which is probably best since they said we'd have a foot and a half of snow if it was colder. :scared1: Thank you rain!

Jackie - I'm so sorry about your little puppy. I lost two precious cats in the last three weeks and I know your pain. They are indeed at the Rainbow Bridge and taking good care of each other.

Dave - another HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!

Jeff - what a bargain! Wow! I need some more Croc flip flops. I love 'em.

Hope everyone's training is going well. I'm sad to report that I probably won't be able to participate in this year's half as planned. I hurt my knee at the San Antonio RnR event and re-hurt it at the Dallas White Rock Marathon Relay last weekend. I think I just need to sit out WDW and let it heal properly so I can do future races although I'm afraid I'll get there and want to particpate. *sigh* I'm just not prepared due to the injury. :( If I don't run, I'll root for everyone from the sidelines. :cheer2: :teeth:

On a happier note, I get to spend New Year's in Paris. I leave this Saturday and I get back two days before leaving for WDW. This was a surprise trip planned by a good friend of mine. I'm hoping to spend a day at Disneyland Paris while I'm there. :) I'm really excited - I just wish it wasn't back-to-back with the WDW trip but I'll take what I can get. :teeth:

May the Christmas spirit bring you much peace, hope and comfort.

Have a safe and happy holiday!

Krista - So sorry you have to be at work today. I'm off until 1/5, then work Mon, Tue, and 1/2 Wed, then leave for WDW! Our office is at least open next week for 3 days - corporate and plants are closed due to economy.

Mel - Your menu sounds fabulous. And the beach is very enticing... plus you're much closer to WDW, which is where I'd rather be anyway...

DAVE'S GONNA BE THERE!!!!! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

Kristi - It's just the 3 of us too at home tomorrow, hence the simple menu of steaks. I did buy some munchies in case we get bored. The advantage of having an almost 18-yr old means there may be lots of napping!

Susie - Paris? WOW! Sorry the half isn't going to happen, but we can always use more cheerleaders. Probably better to be safe... that said, is walking an option?

Have a fabulous holiday everyone! I'm off to finish wrapping, and maybe, just maybe, call our friends and see about picking up puppy. Might wait until tomorrow - I'd love to have her under the tree in the AM, but don't know how to work that out!

Jackie - I just found a weight watchers breakfast crockpot recipe. You put it in tonight for 10-12 hours and then have breakfast all ready in the morning. I think we will then just snack or whatnot in the afternoon, and yes, maybe nap. I'd love a nap. All I want for Christmas is some sleep!

Ok, guys - I am outta here. One last minute gift to get and a trip to the grocery store. Have a fabulous holiday! And if anyone is wondering, Santa is in India right now. :santa:

Debra - Great to hear from you! I'm sure you had a busy semester, and I hope that you're all done now.

Jackie - I've seen those pictures of the puppy. He is SOOO cute, and it sounds like it's meant to be!

And to everyone else - Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and Happy Hanukah and everything else. I had a holiday party last night, and now that it's over I can finally relax. It was a lot of fun, but getting our house ready was more work than I want to admit!

I'm hoping to get a short run in today or tomorrow (I should actually have a lot more time tomorrow!), and then do a 10-miler on Friday or Saturday. I'm about a week behind on my training, but I think I'll be fine as long as I get the 10 miles done by Saturday. I'm getting very excited for the trip.

Have a wonderful day! I probably won't check in again until Friday, but it's nice to see the thread pick up a bit.

For all those who celebrate--Happy Christmas Eve!

Jeff: No offense, but at this time of year my mind's all about the Mai Tais and Pina Coladas. The holidays, you know? Do another 8 miles or so for me, huh? I do have to brag about the Pgh weather, though even if it's not Hawaii nice. Tomorrow is supposed to be 50+ (even if rainy). :thumbsup2

Mel: I missed the delicious meal announcement. By the time I got there, there might not even be leftovers. Mind if I just invite myself for next year? ;)

Maura: Yep, I'm still in for the marathon, but will be walking (back injury sidelined me during training). I believe we have some drinking and other indulgent celebrating to do during the weekend, yes?

Jackie: Like Krista, I'm crossing my fingers for you getting a new family member for the holidays. How extra-special. I can't wait to see the pics. (And your friends are super cool.)

Krista: I have to tell you, because I know you'll appreciate this...my brother and SIL sent me a holiday card informing me that I'll be an aunt. So I hurried up and bought an additional holiday package to celebrate. It included a Steelers baby big and the cutest Steelers socks I've ever seen. Was that too much, do you think (they live in MD)? I mean, Carter's got a genetic predisposition toward the Steelers, but I figure my nephew/niece might need some coaching. Soooo looking forward to seeing the family. Congrats on your SAHM future, although I'm with Kristi and not sure if that will leave you time to train. (Isn't parenting an Olympic sport, though?)

Dave: :cool1: for the news that we'll see you in January!!!

Kristi: Your grilled cheese and tomato soup sounds tasty. We defaulted to Chinese take-out tonight, just like A Christmas Story. (Of course, my FIL didn't get the reference, so it was a bit of a bust....) I hope you got your holiday nap--you deserve it.

Chris: Sounds like a great time. I haven't been ice skating in, well, ever!

Susie: Ouch for your knee, and too bad about the 1/2. But you certainly don't want to re-injure it or make it worse. I'm glad to know you'll be there, though, and that you're thinking long-term. And :yay: for Paris. Sounds dreamy.

Kira: Good luck with your 10-miler. It sounds like you'll be in great shape. And I'd rather do a 10-miler than clean house. :scared: Priorities, priorities.

Allyson, Laurie, Judy, and everyone else: Two more weeks?  I'm so looking forward to meeting everyone. I'm counting on being surrounded by supportive, optimistic, strong WISHers getting me to the finish line. I've been mostly XT due to an injury, and haven't gotten beyond 14 miles. Like Susie, I'm being conservative with my event, although I'm going to start the race. So I'm crossing my fingers and walking the marathon--I'd cross my toes, too, but that might mean I'd walk funny.

MouseDogMom

Debra - I think I'm going to walk the marathon as well. Had an injury for half the summer, so my training has been much less than I'd anticipated. My 20 miler was a walk, so my game plan (at least for now) is to start out walking and then switch to run/walk if there's anything left toward the end.

We did it... welcome Sienna to our family!

He is an orange tiger stripe and his name is Simba or Simba-1 like in the ride Kilamenjaro Safari at Animal Kingdom. Hope everyone had a WONDERFUL Christmas. Now its Marathon time. YIKES its almost here - I can't believe it - I have been working toward this for a year now (last Christmas day was when I decided I was going to do the full in 2009)

Stacie - have fun and be safe in Mexico. Can't wait to see some pictures.
Laurie - Thanks - Simba is actually sleeping next to me now - he was the hit at my dad's last night for Christmas!!

I am waiting for the running store to open so I can get my new shoes (ugh they don't open until 10 - I wish it was earlier!!) - I need to get them before doing my 20 miler tomorrow. I think I fixed my TM and will most likely get my 20 miler in on that - I have a dvd I want to watch so that should take up some of the time - since its a TV show dvd it is quite long which is good for a 20 miler. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the TM is really fixed - it made a clanging noise in the roller area - I tried to fix it yesterday but messed it up even more. I turned it on this morning and tried fixing it again and for some reason this time the noise went away. Maybe it was just trying to tell me not to run on Christmas - LOL

Laurie - Ooh, I am envious of new running clothes!

Stacie - Have a wonderful trip. See you in a couple weeks!!

Jeff - Great pictures as always! That beach looks really crowded. Is that what Hawaii is always like?

Dave - Yay that you will be at disney for the marathon!!

Krista - Carter is so cute in your sig picture! I am sure you will be fine during the half, you are a seasoned running pro ;) Congrats on getting to stay home with him soon, that's awesome!

Sorry to any I missed.

Looking for some advice here. I am signed up to do the goofy. I got the flu a couple weeks ago and then that has turned into pneumonia. I am feeling a good deal better now, but I am still coughing and I actually get winded going up the stairs. Needless to say I have not trained in over two weeks and it doesn't look like I will before the trip. Has anyone been thru this before a race? Were you still able to complete the race? I know I can get thru the half, but I have only done one full before (at last year's goofy) and I am starting to feel like I may not have the respiratory to complete it. Looking for some encouragement! Thanks team :)

Happy Boxing Day everyone!

Jackie: Awwww, Sienna has the cutest face. Look at those inquisitive eyes--lots of personality, I can tell! How old?

And I'm sorry to hear that your training has been interrupted, but am selfishly glad I'll get to be with you for at least part of the full! :) Your RW plan might even inspire me to see what I've got in reserve. I just keep reminding myself that "this isn't the last donut I'll ever eat," meaning that I have future races to keep myself healthy for, KWIM?

Tricia: Simba-1 and Simba-2. That's great! Kittens are so cute, and I love how this litter's hair is all on end. Simba is quite the looker. And I second Jackie's comment--he slept all night long?? Good luck on your 20 miles on a TM and new shoes. That's dedication! I hope your TM is fixed.

Betsy: I'd missed your news about your shoulder surgery. How frustrating, but am glad you can still be on the bike trainer. Is your recovery going well?

Racey Tracey: Great to see you. It sounds like you're being smart with the taper strategy. Isn't it strange that we tend to have lots of little aches and pains during taper? Maybe our bodies and psyches are just anxious for the event!

Jeff: Great pictures! Santa definitely knows you like to take beautiful pictures.

Stacie: Have a great time in Mexico! I love the "Mexico will help me acclimatize to Orlando weather" idea. I'm so stealing that for next year's holiday plans. I really do think that doing your 5 miler in new climes is a great way to keep motivated for taper, too. Have a great time!

Laurie: Yeah for running gear. Santa really knows you too! Is something new going to make the rotation for the Goofy. You know, something old, something pristine, something borrowed, something lime green ..... Wait, that's not quite right....

Becky: I think you can do it, I really do. It's still a couple of weeks until the Goofy. I do think you've got a really solid base upon which to draw. It sounds like you might need to scale back and see how you feel after the half, and then listen to your body. Remember the WISH motto: DLF > DNF > DNS, and be prepared to stop the marathon if you don't think you can continue or that your recovery period from the Goofy might be much longer than you'd anticipated. (P.S. My still--recovering back injury is placing me in walker status, so just know you can always hang with me on the full if you want to. I promise to support you in whatever way I can.)

As for me: Did 6 miles today and felt pretty good. Tried a couple of RW intervals and my back is still tender, but I should be okay to walk the marathon. In holiday news, DOOD and I meet up with my ILs to take a tour of Pgh sites. We're doing the inclines today, and I've never been, and then off to Point State Park. I'll try to take pictures, but they won't be Jeff quality.

Afternoon Everyone,

Jeff - Those pictures upset me and give me hope at the same time. Everytime I see them I think darn him and oh thank goodness someone isn't suffering in this crappy weather.

Stacie - Enjoy Mexico and be safe. Enjoy your 5 miler and make sure you bring us back some pictures. Never been. Some day.

Tricia - Hope you can enjoy your 20 miler on the treadmill.

Anyone I missed Hello! :flower3:

As for me I did 12 miles today outside and loved every minute of it. Took me 2 hours 10 minutes. Did 6 miles yesterday in 64 minutes. I have pictures because it's just ugly here right now.

Racey Tracy - I'm waiting to see those sunrise pictures or sunset you mentioned not too long ago.

GL on the 20 mile treadmill run! A good DVD will be helpful I would think. I need to do a 10 miler today on the treadmill and I am debating in my head whether to do it today or tomorrow. I just don't really feel like doing it :confused3 . Maybe I need a good DVD to motivate me!

TXAng, nice to see you! Feel like its been forever!

And Deborah too! Are you at a waterstop for the Half? I want to see you in person to say HI!

Stacie have fun in Mexico! I like your idea of acclimating to the weather!

Jeff, great pictures as always!

Jeff - Great pictures as always! That beach looks really crowded. Is that what Hawaii is always like?
Becky

Becky,

You think that photo of Waikiki beach is crowded, you should see it in the summer!

They will be revitalizing the beach sometime in the next couple of years. Hardly any sand there compared to years past. It's mainly due to concrete seawalls that alter the wave and water flow. Most of the sand is out on the reefs offshore.

Something has to be done soon, otherwise there will no longer be a Waikiki beach to sit on.

Becky

Becky,
Last year I attempted to do the Goofy. Prior to that I only had 3 half marathons under my belt. It seemed I got tied up in the Disney Magic after the 2007 Donald and decided that I could do the Goofy in 2008. Well my training was not where is should have been and I wound up injuring my only good knee a month and a half before the race. My choices were to bag the half and go for the special “Mickey” medal or go Goofy. I decided to go Goofy.

As you know the weather that weekend was HOT and HUMID. These are two things I hate. The Half went well. In fact I dropped about 16 minutes off the previous year’s half. I felt that I could have kept going that day. After the half I got a massage and did the ice bath thing back at the hotel. Both of these made me feel great and ready for Sunday.

Sunday arrived and it was H&H again. After an emotional start Kareneast (DW) and I were off. By mile three I felt way worse than I did after finishing the half the day before. My knees and legs started to act up. I told Karen to go on without me as I did not want to hold her back. I would see her at the finish one way or another.

I hit the next medic stop for some BioFreeze and Tylenol and I was on my way. After a couple of miles of thinking about quitting I decided that I would either have to drop or be pulled by the sweepers. I kept going and at mile 10 blew out my knee. I wobbled on another 5 miles before the sweepers stopped me.

Although I felt bad (not the word I would have used back then) for not finishing at least I tried. I did spend the next few weeks second guessing myself but that eventually went away.

I have since been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both knees have had to slow down running but I (to quote Walt Disney) “Keep moving forward”. I am on track for finishing the full in a little over two weeks and plan on signing up for the Goofy in 2010.

Only you and your doctor know your limitations so, in my opinion unless your doctor tells you NO I say GO FOT IT.

Worse case you can join me in 2010 to kick Goofy’s butt!

Have a great day.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes on my 20 miler on the TM and for those wondering why I want to do it on the TM instead of outside - yes its hot here in Florida but that's not the reason I don't want to do 20 miles outside. Thge reason is because I don't like to be that far away from the house on foot by myself. Before I was doing my long runs with a group so I wasn't by myself. Also I personally don't find the TM that long is not too bad - I have a dvd I want to watch and it runs for 283 minutes - that is perfect for a 20 miler.

I got my new shoes today. Couldn't actually get the Asic Kayano 14 since they didn't have them in my size so I had to go to their other store in Ft Lauderdale (ugh its like 16 miles away but takes like 40 mins to get there) so I get there and they don't have the 14's but they have the 15's. I ended up getting them because I NEED new shoes before the marathon and I want to at least get my 20 miler in wearing them before then. I am going outside in a little bit to get in a 4 mile run and I am wearing them now. Its going to be hot out there so I am not looking forward to it. Oh well I have to get out of this month long "taper" - thats what it feels like I have been doing!! LOL

Jeff - It's 46 degrees right now and drizzling. If I close my eyes I can pretend I'm in your pictures...;)

Tricia - I did 10 on the TM a couple of weeks ago and thought at the time that I could have done more. 20 I'm not sure about, but I imagine with a good DVD it wouldn't be too bad. I'm gonna do 10 with my winter running group tomorrow - tapering now, thank goodness!

Becky - I'm only a couple of weeks into recovery from respiratory h---, so I feel for you. I wouldn't worry too much about the training, just concentrate on playing it by ear during the race itself. Like Debra said, there are plenty of us who're going to be walking, so you can always drop back and take it slow and easy. I know when I was sick running was darn near impossible, but I could usually get enough air to walk.

DH and I did a 5 mile walk yesterday, then I've got a 10 mile run scheduled for tomorrow. I'm not going to try to count the miles walked with the puppy in the past 48 hours, but I'm thinking I may have done a marathon or two! She's the energizer bunny - goes and goes and goes and then crashes for an hour or two, then goes again.

Final chapter in the Mystic story - talked to the vet this morning - apparently curiosity got the better of her, and she cut Mystic open and confirmed that the liver and intestines were in horrible shape. She's sent the liver off for lab tests, but has basically determined that Mystic had been sick for a very long time and was not curable, so we made the right decision. I'm extremely grateful to the doc for going the extra mile and confirming that - even though I thought we were doing the right thing, it really helps to know that we did! I am finally completely at peace with my decision, and I'm feeling good about moving forward with the vet and Sienna.

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I knew I would get love here.

Debra - Hey ToT buddy! How are you? Thanks for the vote of confidence! I told my DH unless I feel like death on sunday morning I will at least be at the start! I didn't know you had a back injury, I hope you heal soon. I will definately be looking for you at the start. do you know what corral you are in?

John - I am so sorry about your knee! That is awful! Thank you for relating your experience from last year. I will think of you as I try to push through on sunday.

Jackie - I am sorry to hear that you are having respiratory issues as well! I have never had anything like this before. Truth be told I am more worried about my girls getting this than anything else. It has been so awful no little child should have to endure it. I am sorry about Mystic  it is hard to lose a member of the family.

Tricia – Awwww, Simba is ADORABLE! I love orange kitties. I can’t believe you’re going to do a 20-miler on the TM! Good luck!

Jeff – Beautiful photos, as always.

Laurie – Yay for new running clothes!

Becky – I have no advice, but I do hope you’re feeling better!

Debra – I must have missed it, what happened to your back? Hope you’re feeling better.

Chris – WTG on the 12 and 6 milers!

Allyson – Hey there! It has been awhile. How are you doing these days? Did you get your 10-miler done?

Me - Yesterday was CRAZY for us. We did Christmas morning here at the house, then went to the ILs for lunch and then to my grandma's house for dinner. Sean was up from 7:30 am until 9:30 pm and only took one short nap. Poor little guy was SO tired! We're all taking it easy today to try and recover a bit. :)

QUACK!

Hi, all.

The five extra family members who invited themselves to Christmas eve dinner that I was making, thus triggering a last-minute change of menu, complained about the dinner. :( DH says maybe they will think twice before inviting themselves again.

Last week into this week I had serious late-night obligations at school. I was cross-training with a dance routine, including lots of practice and stretching. LOTS of stretching. Today I did 4.4 miles outside. It was 43 degrees when I started and about six degrees less when I finished. I couldn't feel my chin by the end. The last mile I left it all out there--really moving, and I think I was well ahead of my usual pace. When I was walking, right up until the end, I felt like I could keep walking for a long time. However, once I stopped, my legs felt super heavy. I came home and spent 20 minutes stretching my legs/groin/hips. I'm hoping to get six in tomorrow and LSD on Sunday of 10 miles or so. Then just 4 and 5 miles scattered for the next two weeks.

If anyone has a suggestion on an affordable pace tracker, I'd love to hear it. I wanted to buy DH a Garmin but I am not permitted to spend $300+ he said.

And now, in no particular order:

Aloha Jeff, I really need to get to Hawaii. Looks amazing. Can't wait to see you in TWO WEEKS!

Tricia, good job getting those steps in! And on a TM! Do you use an iPod to make the time go by, or watch tv? And the kittens are so cute!

Jackie, congrats on the newest member of the family. And I'm so glad your vet went out of her way to set your mind at ease. It's hard to leave pets at the Rainbow Bridge, but I'm sure Mystic is glad to see you making a new friend.

Debra, I hurt my back two days before Turkey Day and it has hindered my training. I'll be walking the half--not that I had any plans to run in the first place. I can't wait to see your photos!

John (and Karen), we're supposed to have mild weather this weekend if you're looking for some final outdoor long slow days. The 60s! Woohoo! See you in two weeks!

Becky, as long as your coughing, take it easy (so says my dr). You have two weeks--I'm sure you'll be stronger by then. Don't try to do too much--you don't want a relapse! We'll be cheering you on for the full!

Allyson, isn't it strange how hard it is to be motivated this close to the race? I blame the cold weather. We'll be walking at Mickey's house before we know it!

Stacie, enjoy Mexico! Woohoo!

Laurie, new running clothes! Someone was good this year and Santa noticed!

Krista, you must be so excited to have the time to spend with Carter!

Tracey, only two more weeks! :cool1:

Ok so I got 4.5 miles done in a hour. I went outside and it actually wasn't too bad. When I was at the running store I decided to get 2 Cliff Shot gel packets - a vanilla and a chocolate. I tried half of the vanilla and I did not care for the taste. I am going to try the chocolate tommorrow. One question though - for those that only take half at a time how do you keep it from spilling out and getting everything gelled?

Also at the running store I bought The Stick - I have been looking at them for awhile and I finally got one. I already used it on my legs and they feel better.

Hi everyone!

Happy holidays to all. Hope everyone is having a great holiday season!

Just finished doing a quick read through the 8 pages of this thread.

A couple of quick shout-outs:
Jackie - Sorry to hear about Mystic. Glad you found Sienna.

Dave - Happy belated birthday!

To everyone else: Hope your training is going well and for those nursing injuries/colds, etc. hope you're feeling better soon.

AFM - I actually did something this week! :cool1: I did 2 miles on Christmas Day. I have been such a slug and haven't really done much since the Philly Distance Run (boy, am I in trouble for my upcoming 1/2 :scared1: )
But I felt pretty good for the 2.1 miles. I did a r/w routine. Would have stayed ahead of the sweepers, timewise. And I didn't feel bad afterwards. Of course it was only 2 miles.
I've plotted out my training schedule for the next 3 weeks, so hopefully I can stick with it so I can finish the 1/2 and not feel horrible afterwards.

I have to say I am so bummed I won't be at WDW with you guys this year (the Rock-n-Roll 1/2 in Phoenix is the week after WDW). As WDW weekend gets closer I could kick myself for not signing up. I'm gonna miss seeing all of you. I've already marked the day after the full on my calendar, so I can sign up for Goofy 2010!

Has anyone used a heart rate monitor? If so, what kind did you use and did you find it helpful in your training? I was thinking of getting one, but not sure what kind. I also don't want to spend a fortune for one. Any help would be appreciated.

Terri

Good Morning WISHers, I am out the door heading to the beach to do 4 miles.

I was just reading the same thing, that Oahu is having a power outage. Hope you get your lights back soon Jeff! We lost power in a big ice storm a few weeks back. We were out for 2 days, a lot of folks in our town were out for more like 6. Not much fun. Though at least in Hawaii you don't have to worry about your house getting down to 40 degrees or less I would imagine! There is a bright spot!

Well I have to put off my 20 miler until tomorrow AM. I went to bed REALLY late last night (then the kitten wouldn't go to sleep in his basket and I couldnt get to sleep thinking my DH would step on him if he woke up in the middle of the night - Simba found the laundry basket and ended up sleeping there the rest of the night so it turned out ok) then I woke up at 6:15 feeling sick so I went back to sleep. I know I won't be able to go back to sleep on Jan 11th but today at least I still have that luxury. I know I could still do the 20 miles today but I really would like to do it first thing in the AM kinda like a last minute trial marathon

Hey WISHers! Hope everyone had a great Christmas!

DH and I ran a 12 miler yesterday, my last LR before the half. I'm now in taper mode baby! :woohoo: Our average pace was 11:16. Had some issues with my left knee and foot hurting, but the real killer was my right calf knotting up! OUCH! :scared: This also happened on my 10 mile LR. Any advice out there? It is still very tight today and it almost looks bruised?!? I'm having a massage tomorrow (Can't wait!) so I'll ask her about it.

Cecilia, we ran out on the Greenway. I liked it very much, but I don't know if I'd go out there alone. It seemed very quiet... DH and I got lost at first! We couldn't find the main path and kept doing loops at the start - 3 miles worth of loops! :lmao: I hope we never get lost out in the woods! We'd be up the creek - literally!

So overall, I got in 23 miles this week. This morning we're headed out to get me a new pair of shoes. I'm gonna run in them for my taper and see how they do... Still not sure what I'll run in for the half. I know... I know... ;)

Oh, and my sinus infection seems all cleared up now! :yay:

Have a nice weekend WISHers!

Dumb question, what happens if it rains during the race? I mean like the whole time? I would imagine running in wet socks/feet is just mega blisters waiting to happen. Do people run in ponchos? Rain Gear? I was just thinking as I look outside on this very rainy day here in MA that if it were like this during the race, well that would suck.

Today I went out and did 5 miles--first run since a week ago Friday. Bad girl! It was warm, rainy, foggy and I was soaked. It was definitely a "Knock the rust off" run. Anyway, I will get in one final long run sometime in the next week and then 2 WEEKS TO GO.

Some of you may want to look away....

TWO WEEKS UNTIL THE WDW HALF MARATHON!!!!

Allyson: Hope you survived the 10 on the dreadmill. Let us know if you survived w/o going insane. If we don't hear back from you we can only think the worst happened. If I think it is going to rain during a rain I bring along one of those folding up desposable rain poncho things in my fanny pack and if possible a dry set of socks. I just really try to GLIDE my feet really well which seems to help some.

Tricia: So sad you weren't feeling well this morning to get out there. Weather was nice at the beach, not too hot and breezy and plenty of clouds to hide the sun.

Shan: Glad to hear your sinuses are clearing up. You got your run in and now taper!! Yeah you!!

Maura: Wow - girl. You and those long drives. I hope you don't have to do that very often.

Okay, here I am. Did you miss me for the last 17 hours?

Yesterday, the Big island, Maui, Lanai, Molokai were under a flash flood warning due to 2" of rain per hour.

Last night on Oahu, at 5:30 pm a pretty violent storm rolled in from the East off the Pacific ocean. Cold air + warm air = lightning, thunder, pouring rain. By 6 pm the lights had flickered a couple of times, so I went to grab the flashlights. Just as I was changing the batteries in one, everything went dark.

We spent the evening reading, kids played their DS', and wife watched videos on her Archos Wi-Fi player.

After a few hours, I thought, hmm maybe I should turn on my radio to listen to the news. That's when I found out one of our two power plants took a direct hit by lightning. They system automatically shuts itself down, and takes over 12 hours to reboot the island.

So apparently all the tourists in Waikiki were stranded walking up and down stairs, had nowhere to eat, and no where to shop.

This morning we slept in, read, and listened to the news radio. Broke out the Coleman stove to make some breakfast.

This is my second island wide power outage in 20 years of living here. Minor inconvenience for us. Water use restrictions since the pumps don't pump water up the mountain we live on. We don't open up the refrigerator or freezer, so the food won't spoil in the 24 hour window.

President-Elect Obama and his family were also in the dark in Kailua. The electric company brought a emergency generator over in the middle of the night, but he actually went to bed like the rest of us when the lights went out. He's been relaxing Hawaiian Style. Low-key, not in the spotlight.

With all the relaxing we've done, we're going to head out into the rain and go hiking to Makapuu Lighthouse in search of humpback whales.

See you all later in the day.

P.S. My suitcase and backpck for WDW are packed, since we're headed to Maui on Wednesday. Won't have time to do it next week, so I got it done yesterday before the outage.

Tracy--great pics! I wish I was closer to the beach here in NJ to run when it is warmer!

ms.mightyduck--we may actually have some race day temps here in NJ tomorrow....did you ever think we would be saying that two weeks before the race! I am taking advantage of it wind or no wind tomorrow!

Sorry to everyone I missed, but it is time to go watch the Devils beat the Rangers!

Jeff - Glad you survived the power outage. At least we now know that it's not ALWAYS picture perfect beautiful! :thumbsup2

Tracy - Glad you enjoyed your run. Love the pics!

Duckie - I don't run in the wind either, and I don't have a valid excuse. I just hate wind!

Did my 10 miles with the group this morning. I have to say it was one of the best runs I've ever had. I expected it to be tough, since I haven't actually run outside since Thanksgiving, but it was probably the easiest 10 miles I've ever done. I'm pretty sure I could have done 4-6 miles more, but I had to quit so we could go to the in-laws for Christmas dinner.

While DD and I (and puppy) were at dinner (DH had to stay in town for work), DH went to an adopt-a-thon at PetSmart. Guess what he came home with? Yep, we now have TWO puppies! I'm not particularly thrilled, but DH has been sulking because he didn't feel a part of the decision about Sienna, and he really wanted a boxer mix, so that's what he found. The good news is they're tiring each other out, but the bad news is they're exhausting me!

Hi Kathy and Colleen!

Thanks for the kind words. After not finishing the full (for the 2nd straight year :sad2: ) I decided to take a break from going Goofy. I felt like I was putting too much pressure on myself and not being able to get the steps in to train properly. So I decided to just do 1/2's this year and to really get ready for Goofy 2010. Of course, with craziness at work, training hasn't improved much.

But as I started reading about the WDW getting closer, I was surprised by how bummed I am that I'm not going. I think it just goes to show that the weekend is not just about the race, but about the friendships made here on the WISH boards. I'M GONNA MISS SEEING ALL OF YOU!!!! wahhhh! :sad1:

I'll suck it up and get through Phoenix. And for 2009 I'm going to adjust my attitude and make training more of a priority. It's a matter of focusing more on me and making the time to get the steps in.

Jackie and Laurie- I'll still have to get my walk in tomorrow; I just won't do it on the unprotected boardwalk (and of course, there's a 10 mile racewalk on the boardwalk tomorrow! Drat! It's in Asbury Park if you're looking for it, Laurie). I can't believe we have such warm weather after so many weeks of ridiculously low temps!

And congrats on the newest puppy, Jackie! New friends are always good. Sorry they are tiring you out. Puppies are exhausting, but so worth it to put the energy in at the beginning to have super companions for many years to come.

And yes, as Tricia asked, name for newest puppy? :)

Terri--our posts crossed! The friendship and camaraderie is definitely what I'm most looking forward to in two weeks. Sorry you won't be there, but I guess that means we'll all have to do it again next year! :)

Can you NJ folks keep the nice weather through Wednesday for me? ;)

I am heading to Atlantic City on Tuesday morning with 'my girls' for NYE and would love to do my training outside, rather than on a TM at the Showboat while I am there!

Oh, Kristi, if it were up to me it would never get cold here at the shore! It's looking like a dip down to the 40s. The good news is they are predicting sunny skies, so you may have luck if you work out in the afternoon. I wish I could do better than that for you!

Have a great time! I just saw in the paper today that the first week of March AC will be having a restaurant week, so we will probably head down then to take advantage of the excellent deals. And I would go see an Imax movie this week if it were up to me, but I don't think DH is going for it....

Jeff--Awesome pics...as always!!! Those people in the water are CRAZY!!

Jackie--another puppy!!! Bet you didn't think a week ago you would have two new puppies!!!

Terri--I can totally relate to how you are feeling right now...in January I didn't sign up for the Goofy as I wanted to...didn't think we were going to have the money to go. Well as time went by, I started to feel bad about not signing up..I really wanted to go. My fiance says to me..isn't there any way to get a Goofy entry..and low and behold within one day of hearing that I had booked a package deal with Anthony travel with a Goofy entry. I just couldn't imagine sitting here right now feeling all down that we didn't go. I have no regrets about signing up! Hang in there...before you know it, 2010 will be here and you will be back at WDW!

Duckie--no racewalk for me tomorrow...I will be on the local trail doing my 12 miler.

Kristi--no 60's for wednesday but it won't be terribly cold, you still should be able to run outdoors if you bundle up!
