View Full Version : More CM chatter on "Space Mountain 2"

When I was at MK this evening waiting for Spectromagic, I overheard a conversation that a CM (in the railroad / stroller rental area) was having with another guest about the Space Mountain overhaul coming up. I asked for details, and this is what I was told:
-Space Mountain will be closing in April for the big rehab.
-It will retain the 2-track layout and single-row car type, but will receive a sound system similar to that found in the DLR Space Mountain.
-The CM referred to it as "Space Mountain 2," although I don't have any details beyond that.
I don't know if this is known info or not, but he was talking about this in terms of it being something that is going to happen for sure.

It may well happen.
Thanks for posting!
But, I'm reminded of a Disney rule-of-thumb that has become even more true as time goes by...
"There is not much that is LESS ACCURATE
than info given by a CM, chosen at random."

The chatter about the Space Mountain rehab seems to be all over the place. Some sources say it will be a light touch-up; others say it will be extensive. I hardly know what to believe any more. At any rate, I suppose we don't have much longer to wait. :goodvibes

My source tells me it is pretty extensive and Disney plans for it to take most all of if not a little more than 2009.

I HOPE that it's like the DLR one!!! The music at DL adds SO MUCH to the ride!!!

SM will be down most of next year, and into 2010. It has not been over hauled since it was opened. There is a lot to do in addition to cleaning, and painting, and new effects, and structural work... you get music, and retool of the loading and unloading areas, and new lighting effects, and a complete redo of the entrance and exit exhibits.

its going to be extensive and will be shut for quite a long time!

 Hope it's open in October 2009 as it was DD5 favourite ride when we were there last in 2007.
At that time BTMR was closed for a refurb so at least if SM is shut then we'll have both BTMR and Splash Mountain to go on.
SHe was most dissapointed when we were in DLP in October this year that she was too small for the much fiercer version of Space Mountain they have in France and was really upset when turned away from RnR in paris for being half an inch too small.

I read on another thread that Space Mountain is not even shown or mentioned in the new planning DVD, and it's not listed on the theme park maps included on the DVD as well.
I'd take that as a sign that it is going to be down for quite a while. It is time for it too.

True, it is pictured on the enclosed planning map though not mentioned in the list of Tomorrowland attractions.

I was really hoping they would have changed the cars...We took the backstage magic tour...While on the tour we saw the DLSM cars being built, painted, and shipped. Looked a lot more comfortable than the original cars. Especially for a 6'4" tall person!!!!:rotfl2:

My sense is that the way the winds are currently blowing, it'll be going down in January '09 at some point, and it will stretch into 2010. (This is as opposed to the April start date with shorter downtime.) It still doesn't seem to be carved in stone, though---whether that's because the Powers That Be are actually managing to keep something a secret, or the plans really are still up in the air, I wouldn't hazard to guess.

Hmmm... A friend of our who works at Disney was very involved in the DL SM rehab. I just love what they did there... the music, the 2 person seats and I can't even explain how smooth it is compared to the jerkiness at WDW. I will have to ask him if he is going to be involved in this rehab as well.

I hope your sense is wrong. We are going to be there in March and that is one ride that I HAVE to go on while visiting MK. I will be soooooo bummed if it was closed when we are there. Plus, my DDs are both tall enough to where we can all go as a family on the bigger rides, instead of doing the child swap with DH and that is one ride that both DDs want to try out because they know it is mom's favorite ride. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be more the April date like the OP had mentioned.

Oh I SO hope it's not being closed until April like the OP heard, I'd love to be able to ride it again on my trip in March!

This may be a silly question, but how will the rehab affect the TTA? I wonder if it will still run "through" Space Mountain.

I will miss it if it's down that long, but I think it will be well worth it. I am hoping they use the same soundtrack as DL. It's by the guy who did the music for "The Incredibles," and it''s great.

I have also heard they may be closing in the boarding area to help make it a lot darker. When you ride the DL version, you can barely see in front of you. The ride will hopefully be a lot darker and smoother. I also read on another board that a new track has already been ordered and that there was going to be a longer 18 month refurb, but it is now in the 6-9 month category. Take it all with a grain or two of salt though!
I am going in April and I will be perfectly happy if it is closed while I am there. I really really really want a refurb done, and something that holds a candle to the DLR version.

Just have them wait until after everybody's trip! Let's see, that would be about the year 3022?
I'm just rooting for after our Feb trip. Or keep it open until your March trip. :goodvibes
I haven't been back to MK in years, and it was always my must-ride. I'll be SO disappointed if it is closed.
So for those of you in the know, does WDW try to give any particular number of months/weeks/days/hours notice before shutting down a major attaction? I am aware of the calendars and other attractions are listed for Feb. shutdowns, so why wouldn't they list SM by now if they were going to close it that soon?

LMAO I know I will ride it as many times as possible my next trip 1/3-1/6 ...I rode it as many times as I could in July because I did not know I would be back. That way when it goes down it will be ok plus I will have a fresher memory to compare

I'm going in late February, and while I'll miss it, I would really prefer that it get the attention that it deserves with a real top-to-bottom upgrade as Anaheim's did, rather than have it get just a quick clean-and-polish.

I've moved this thread to the Rumors and News board. :)
Boo.
My first trip to the world and they are shutting down one of the rides I have been looking forward to riding. Hopefully any rehabs get pushed off ;)

In the late 90s SM was being refurbed and the TTA was still open... I remember going through it and seeing all the lights on and people working on it.

FWIW, a friend who is fairly high up in the WDW organization told me that the rehab for Space Mountain has been taken off the board for now, something to do with the economy. As I said FWIW this person has been very accurate in other info, she says SM will not be rehabbed until 2010 at the earliest despite what has been posted.

logic and reason would dictate that this would actually be the BEST time to do it - when attendance is down.
but we all know that Disney is no longer run by folks possessing any amount of logic and reason.:rotfl:

This sounds a little strange because if the rehab was really going to be major and replace the track, the track would already have to be on order and probably mostly manufactured by now. Disney is going to have to pay for it whether or not they use it. There's no sense in spending the money for the materials and not utilizing it so it would make more sense to install it when it was delivered. Unless of course new track wasn't part of the project and it really was not going to be that major.
