I was lucky enough to be attending Mousefest this past week. But I got one of those calls that no one wants to receive while on vacation - they found a tumor in my Mom's neck.
She had been having neck pain for the last few weeks and went to the doctor who of course ordered an MRI which showed that one of her vertebrae was fractured from a tumor. Upon further CT and bone scans it has been determined that her breast cancer from 25 years ago has metastized and she has lesions on her pelvis, spine and skull but only in her bones and not in any soft tissue. She started radiation today to shrink the neck tumor so her neck can be stabilized and will start some form of chemo in the next week.
Please keep my mother in your prayers and thoughts as she fights this battle. She is the backbone of our family and it has been a difficult past few days for my family.
Thankfully, I was amongst my DIS friends when I got the news and was distracted enough to not totally break down - well, most of the time at least. :) I think I need another DATW and TSM dessert party to distract me though. :rolleyes1

i am so very very sorry to hear this Tonya....
you and your mother and your family will be in my prayers...
metasteses in the bone can be extraordinarily painful......even more than in soft tissue....pain control is very important when cancer metastesizes to the bones...
if your mom is the stiff upper lip sort of person, she may not let on how painful it is......your dad might want to talk to her doctor about it (in terms of helping your mom in that area...
patients sometimes don't like to complain - or sometimes wait and suffer a really long time before they finally ask for something to alleviate the pain..
i hope her treatments go well...

Thank you all for your prayers and concerns. I knew I could count on my DIS family. :grouphug: I told my Mom that all of my DIS friends from around the world were praying and thinking of her - she said thank you and that she needs them.
My Mom is doing exceptionally well. She is able to move her neck some so the radiation must be starting to shrink the tumor. Her pain seems to be under control with the pain patch - although it does make her groggy at times. We will get the results of the biopsy today or tomorrow and then know whether she only has to take chemo pills or IV chemo - hopefully only the pills.
This would all be easier if it wasn't during the holidays and my Mom's birthday wasn't the 21st. We keep doing the WASP thing and smiling through the pain for the grandkids sake but there is an undercurrent of sadness that is hard to overcome. These "this could be the last time" thoughts keep popping in to your head and you just want to burst in to tears. :sad1:
Okay, enough with the depressing stuff. I hope all you have a wonderful Christmas/holiday with your families and hopefully Santa will leave everyone a trip to Disney World or a Podcast Cruise. :mickeyjum

She is using a Fentanyl patch that is keeping everything pain free right now. Thankfully my father is a doctor and is adamant about pain control. The biggest problem right now is that she doesn't have any appetite so I keep having to put food in front of her although she doesn't want any. At least it is Christmas time and there is lots of food around the house - now if only I would stop eating those darned cookies. :rolleyes1

Let us just run off and then we go to Epcot, do a drink around the world and just enjoy Disney.....
We can do it........ Even when it's only in our minds...........
Just think about it, picture it in your head and then probably the Disney feeling is in your body and soul and a smile wil be there on your face.
And about your Dad, the worst patiënt is a doctor himself.....

My Mom's treatment has been going fairly well. She finished her 10 days of radiation on her neck right before New Years and although spent most of January and February extremely fatigued she was doing well. She has been taking Femara pills everyday and tolerating those and getting monthly infusions of Zometa which other than a few episodes of vomiting and general achiness she has been tolerating that also.
The tumor markers have decreased and her neck has been feeling better. We thought everything was great but the last few weeks her shoulder has been bothering her. After an x-ray they found another tumor on her shoulder and she started 10 more days of radiation on Friday. It is a little disturbing since this tumor didn't show up on her original bone scan in December. Unfortunately, I am not in Augusta with my parents because last week I had strep throat and went back to my house so I wouldn't infect my mother - and it sucks to be sick by yourself. (When you are sick you always want your mom!!!) Since I haven't actually seen my mom since she got the news of the latest tumor I can't get a good idea of how she is dealing with things but my sister did say she cried at the doctor's office. It is hard to see her cry because she always has a positive outlook on things and to see a chink in that makes my heart break at the thought of losing her.
She is having another CT scan in a few weeks so we should know how things are progressing then. Until then, please keep up the prayers. I think the doctors are still optimistic but the second round of radiation is definitely a set back.

Oh girl - hang in there. I do bone scans for a living (for 20 years now) and it never endingly amazes me how aggressive some cancers are. I have a lot of patients I see more than once a year because of it. I have cried with/for my patients many times.
