We are going to WDW in January. We're not staying at a Disney resort, but staying in Lake Buena Vista. Our hotel does have a shuttle, but we are traveling with a 4 year old and I'm a little concered about having a shuttle available when we "need" it.
We've been debating over renting a car for the week. I am concerned though over parking fees and crowds, etc.
My question is, for those that have done this before, what are you suggestions?? I've seen several people mention the Taxi's, but I wonder how much that would cost to use each day, etc.
Give me some opinions please!
Thanks so much for your help!

Personally, I wouldn't want to rely on a non-disney hotel shuttle, especially when a small child is involved. Plus, if you take taxis every where, your ds would need a booster at minimum, and where would you store it when you're in the parks? Too inconvenient. I also think using a taxi all the time would probably end up being more expensive than renting. Have you checked out mousesavers.com for rates? We have found some good coupon codes there.

crowds won't be an issue at the time you are going. I think you will be much happier with a rental car since you are staying off property. The freedom to come and go as you need is priceless. Cab rides add up quickly and for the price of a cab ride you would probably pay your parking for the day. You only pay for parking once a day so if you need to back to your hotel for a nap or you want to have lunch outside of the park you can return and just show your receipt and you won't have to pay again.

i would rent a car.
We stayed at an off property once that did the free park shuttles. They left once in the morning and once in the evening. I know you will hate to be tied to that kind of schedule.
Parking is 12 bucks- a small price to pay for flexiblity
