I am new to the DVC, very very new (less than a week). I have been reading the boards and wondering if I will have trouble booking out at the 11 month mark. Our "home" is AKL and we are so excited about our trip for next Thanksgiving. I believe I can only book 7 nights at one time, so I will have to wait list the last two nights, right? Will I have trouble getting them? If I do, what do I do then?

Thanks!

Nope. You can book at the 11 month mark plus 7 nights the call back each day to add one more day till you get entire trip. Another way to go is to wait till 7 nights from checkout, then book all at once. A third way is to book at checkin day for the 7 nights, then wait for the number of nights that you want that was not book and then call for the rest.

You only wait list if none of the rooms you want are available.

From my experience, the only thing you might have trouble booking is concierge level. They are VERY hard to come by.

Just called today for Nov 1-6 and got waitlisted for a standard view at BWV. We got a boardwalk view but wanted to save points.

I did last January for 1 night for my current trip. I called at the end of the 11 month window and not day by day and I had 1 night get waitlisted. I ended up getting SSR (i.e. it was for tonight and I am sitting in my SSR room writing this) at the 7 month window.

Yep - just did yesterday for AKV concierge. I wasn't completely surprised but the CM was. First time I was able to try and book something 11 months out. :upsidedow

How exactly is it possible to get waitlisted when you are booking 11 months out? Shouldn't you be able to get what you want then?

We're not members, but are considering buying at BLT. We can't always book 11 months out with my husband's work schedule and our huge concern with buying DVC is availability. We don't want to end up at SSR every trip when our home resort is BLT. Is that a realistic possibility? We like to go early December or November right now, but when our kids are older I'm sure we'll be switching to spring breaks and holidays.

In my case my I think there are a number of reasons. First, there are only five 2 bedroom concierge units that could give up to a total of five studios and five 1 bedrooms so that's pretty small. Second, it's Jersey week. And third, it's also the last Food & Wine Weekend. There are still rooms at AKV and I had no trouble booking a backup. Also, the new booking system would have favored people coming in at the beginning of the week as they could have booked up to 7 days and locked me out from getting a unit days before I could have even booked what I wanted.

That being said - I was able to get concierge in May and I was calling at about 7 months 1 week. Still within my home priority, but just barely. I think that had more to do with Kidani opening May 1st and people wanting to try there instead.

Haven't been waitlisted since we've been DVC members (1992).

With this new, idiotic, no-thought, unfair booking policy, it's completely possible to be locked out of your home resort BEFORE your booking window opens.
Although unlikely for the entire resort, it may be more frequent for things such as club level at AKV, or the cottages at VB.

Yes, you read that correctly.

I'm thinking that is due to the new check in date rule. There are going to be a lot of folks who can book your first day ahead of you.

I think that's probably true as well. I was against the change and think I got "bit" by it. Made me wish I had tried walking but oh well.

I complained loudly, and Customer Satsifaction gave me a "note" that basically says if it happens (can't book CL at 9 AM first day of trip), I should call and let her know. Believe me, I plan to take her up on that!!!

Could you avoid this by booking earlier dates, then changing the dates day by day, or would you have to make a new reservation? I mean, if I want to go on say Christmas for a week, could I book what I want for the 19-26, then call back the next day and change my dates to the 20-27, then 21-28, etc.?

This is our one hang up keeping us from buying at BLT, that we won't be able to get in when we want. We really want standard view to keep points down, so we won't be happy if we have to get MK view and the end up eating through our points every year.

Yes, this is called walking your reservation. I would certainly walk for any tough to get ressie.
What the geniuses in DVC management don't understand is that not only the number of calls will stay the same, but many people will get locked out of a ressie because members are forced to walk.
