View Full Version : So what ya asking Santa for?

OrlandoMike

Just curious....has anyone made out their list for Santa yet?

The top of my list is a riding lawn mower, but quite frankly, that may have to wait for the Easter Bunny. No need to spend, oops, I mean ask Santa for something I wont need till Spring anyway....

So what are you asking for?

Furniture!

Specifically a buffet and china cabinet with hutch for the dining room.

With all the wedding gifts, we're in desperate need of a place to store them all! :rotfl2:

Additionally (or if we . . er . Santa can't afford furniture right now) we're looking at this:
http://actfrench.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/5185fep8jql_ss500_.jpg

We're planning on going back to France in the next couple years, and want to be able to speak with people more fluently than the last time. :thumbsup2

Santa gave us plane tickets to New Zealand to visit family for Christmas! :woohoo:

My girls are 9 and 11, so old enough to know what a big ticket item that was and not expecting tons of toys and stuff. Santa will be giving them iTunes gift cards to stock up on new ipod music for the plane, and some new Nintendo DS games for the plane, but other than that our trip is our big Christmas present to each other!

Ooooh, Rosetta Stone. If I were going to ask Santa for anything, I'd ask for the Irish version of Rosetta Stone.

A kimber?

But nope. We're having an unexpected cruise (SOON!) and a houseful for Christmas, so we'll forego the Santa stuff this year.

Not yet. Though, I did the Pimsleur CDs which are also an "immersion" technique, but without the visuals. I thought it was a great way for me to learn, so the addition of the visual components should work even better for me, as I tend to learn visually more quickly than auditorily.

interesting how they mention kids and how they just absorb the spoken language............
my kids always change the language on dvd movies, and I swear they are almost bilingual in Spanish from doing this.

I really don't know. All I want is kids, but, that's not exactly something Santa can bring me.

I'd check on whether they have different versions for "European French" and "Canadian French" before expecting it to help you in Montreal.

When I (attempt to) speak French I use a mixture of European and Canadian French since even in Canada the French as a Second Language education system is based on European French. But, the French that you actually hear and get to use is French Canadian. I had a roommate (in the US) who just thought my French was really bad (which it is now, but, wasn't then) until she happened to hear a French Canadian newscast one day. She was shocked by how different it was--I tried pointing out that I'd told her this before, but, she really believed that my French was just wrong.

I should add...European French will be generally understood in Montreal, it's just not so likely to help you understand conversations between native French Canadians unless you are extremely fluent.

My Grandfather was a native speaker of Canadian French. I learned from him and European French from my professor at Uni (who was a native French woman). There are extreme differences, but you will be understood.

The Canadian French uses an older form/version of modern day European French. That's the easiest (albeit somewhat lacking) way to explain it.

Yes, my point wasn't that you won't be understood, but, that if your rationale for learning it is to understand the conversations that you overhear then it probably won't work.

If you want to learn Japanese more cheaply pick up a book called "Remembering the Kanji". It's a fascinating way to learn the characters that works beautifully for most English speakers.

With all of the money that Santa is spending on our upcoming vacation, I am not asking for anything.

I do have a wish list. I am always hoping that one day, we can put in hardwood floors. I also would love a kitchen redesign, since our kitchen is almost as old as my partner. We also both are hoping to change out our living room/den furniture soon by adding couple of recliners and getting a new coffee table.

I already kind of got a secret wish gift yesterday. Corey had a surprise meeting with her boss who has told her that starting next year, there will be one 6 week period where she will be able to stay at home without going out on the road. This is going to be great to actually have her home. For the past almost 3 years, she is gone 3 to 5 weeks out of every month with more than a few times having stretches of 6 to 13 weeks out on the road. She has worked her butt off for this company. It's time that they recognize the sacrifices that these people make in terms of their personal lives. I love Corey, but if we didn't have a strong relationship going into this job, I could not imagine us still being together. It's a lot of work to maintain a relationship when you only see each other 1 to 3 days a week.

yes I would love to understand conversations..........seems like most i have encountered in Montreal are bilingual, because I just say I only speak English if someone starts talking to me in French, and then they switch over.
I would love to be bilingual though then I would have known what the snotty hotel check in clerk on one of our trips, was saying about me in French to her co-worker.........:rotfl2:

I've watching this language subplot to the thread with interest. You see I used to travel to Montreal fairly regularly for business. This was a couple years ago before I quit coloring my hair and EVERYBODY there ALWAYS tried speaking to me in French -- before switching to English after recognizing my complete lack of comprehension. (I think it was because I look Métis.) More than once, the subsequent switch to English was a smidge less than completely friendly. (I'm thinkin' of your experience with the hotel clerk here.) A francophone friend explained some of the internal history between the French-speaking culture and the English-speaking culture and that moment of frostiness made more sense. A few words made my trips there MUCH more uniformly friendly. There were: "Je ne comprends pas. Je viens d'Arizona." As soon as the other person realized that I was not Canadian, my lack of French was no longer a problem. Montreal -- BEAUTIFUL City!
