The Rev. Fred Phelps' people from the Westboro Bapstist Church (the “God Hate’s Fags” people) are planning a protest on Monday morning (7:30am), November 24, at the corner of 13th and SW Market. They will be protesting PSU’s Queer Resource Center and, specifically, the concept of gender neutral bathrooms.

PSU is planning a counter protest and I plan to be there for my daughter. Please keep us in your thoughts and pray that there is no violence.

Just remember, these are mean nasty people. There was a thread on the CB a while back on the same subject. These people will go out of their way to get YOU arrested, to drag YOU into a lawsuit! They know just how far they can go so that THEY dont get in trouble! They are very good at what they do!

Thanks Mike. I hope that the Queer Resource Center decides to ignore them. They're meeting on Friday with several groups (Basic Rights Oregon, the PSU security, Q Center) to discuss a plan of action. I'm hoping they decide to stage a quiet rebuttal AFTER this obnoxious hate mongers leave.

As others have said, your presence is important there for sure, but your best bet is to go perhaps with signs of a more positive nature...to counter the hateful signs and words they will be using. And the most important advice of all is to try to remain calm and silent to their taunting. No matter what hateful things they say, counter it with a quiet, peaceful smile. The last thing you want to do is get into a shouting match with them. You're not likely to change their hateful minds anyhow, and you'll just end up looking as mean and hateful as they are.

I saw a very disturbing documentary on him this summer, I had never heard of him...VERY scary group of people. They THRIVE on this stuff, they want confrontation, be careful. I do have this to say. My ex is an evangelist, so I have an undertanding of these kinds of people. With that said, I have ONE thing I always say, and they can't dispute it. How many times does Jesus, the son of God, pure, perfect, right? How many times does HE mention homosexuality in the bible? Guess....33 years of ministry, he NEVER mentions it. DO you think he forgot, he was too busy? I think, if he knew, he only had 33 years to get across his message, knowing everything he says will be forever talked about...it wasn't an oversite. I personally believe, since he never mentions it, it's not a big deal. I have peace about it...nuff said!:flower3:

Thank you everyone :grouphug: I really appreciate all the support. I have been around a few hateful protests. Every year at Pride, or during some vigil etc...For some reason it doesn't make me angry as much as it makes me incredibly SAD.

This awful group is protesting 7:30-8:30 am. (Just one more reason to loathe them-ya'll all know I hate the mornings!) PSU is setting up an area across the street with tables that will have positive messages, coffee and breakfast foods. People can come sit and talk with us and express their feelings. There will be University security and a group that is trained in DE-Escalation tactics who will steer people being targeted towards our group and away from the protesters. Wish us luck.

The whole thing is SO crazy...the ENTIRE purpose of that "Ministry" is hate. I've never seen anything like it. I can't imagine, living, breathing, working, eating, socializing...all of that done, surrounded in hate. If you haven't seen the documentary on this cult, it's eye opening. As a former Assemblies of God girl, I know the bible...NONE of what they say, is true. They are even denounced by other churches....its' a cult.:sad2: I am curious what happends, and hope you all are safe.

I am back and all is well. I was so impressed by the number of people who showed up so early to offer their support and to all the cars that honked for us. The hate group itself was tiny (4 people) and they were surrounded by a small number of our group who remained calm and silent. The majority of us stood across the street singing and chanting. I held my "Love Makes A Family" sign, Zena held the Pride Flag. My favorite sign said (in mocking theirs) "GOD HATES FUZZY KITTENS".
I am relieved and energized.
Took a few photos and will post them later.
