One more ? about tropical night

I know that on tropical night one should wear their festive island attire. But I saw someone mention that many wore shorts on tropical night to the dining rooms. We definitely will abide by the "no shorts at night" rule, but will someone let me know about the shorts on tropical night? Does everyone have on shorts that night?

On our cruise there was a mix of dresses, dress pants, and shorts in the dining room for tropical night (we were in Lumieres). My DD and DH both bought tropical attire on St. Martin--really anything tropical goes.
