Well here is the new thread. I've invited some Marching Band folks over from the CB so lets welcome all the new people!
This thread is for anyone who enjoys the Marching Musical Arts!
We keep it over here on the GLBT board cuz it tends to get lost on the CB, that's the only reason. So to get this thread started, as this is a Dis board, I give you Star of Indiana '85...
Blast from the past! :lmao:

BAC - Boston Crusaders Sr. Corps will be performing in Plymouth Mass this Saturday, November 22. Also will be freezing our tails off in the morning parade for the America's Hometown Celebration. Along with the Cru, Hawthorne, St. Kevin's, Blessed Sac, Park City Pride, and for their final performance, The Light Brigade. It's always a memorable night, and that one last shot at us "ol' timers" laying it out on the line.
At our final rehearsal for the 08 season yesterday we sounded great. The drum line is sporting 8 snares these days along with 4 tenors, 4 bass, and 3 cymbals. The hornline is still at about 42 horns, and the guard is presently at 5 flags, and a national section. Our performance will include, Shangri-la, El Capitan, I Walk With god, Ole (North Star-78-80), This Masquerade (North Star), California Dreamin, and of course Conquest! Ya gotta hear the mellphones on this now....All 9 are hanging it out there on an F chord for 16 counts at the end....
Anyone within driving distance might want to consider coming down and doing next year with us. We are keeping half the show, Ole included, and adding Conquest, the jazz version and a couple other goodies... If any of you are interested, PM me, and I will be happy to supply you with information! Come be part of the ONLY Sr. corps to still have a competing top 10 Jr. corps in DCI.
Got news yesterday one of our contra/tuba players made the cut and will be performing with the Jr. corps in 09!
That's it from New England....
Thanks for putting this thread up Mike!:thumbsup2

Thanks for the link!
Marching season is over for us also. We're in playoff mode now. The football team won it's first playoff game and is scheduled to play in Texas Stadium at 9 pm this friday night. It will be fun for the band to play there. Most have never even been in the stadium, yours included.
Winterguard tryouts were last week and my daughter made the rifle line. We have 10 girls in the WG this year. A good number considering how young the program is. Carol's a senior this year and this is the band's fourth year in existance. They had a WG her freshman year and then it skipped two years. We both are looking forward to her WG season.
The band's last marching performance will be in the Neiman Marcus Adolphus Children's parade in Dallas on Dec. 6th.
We're not DCI, WGI or BOA so I hope that it's okay to post over here.

I'm no longer currently active in any of the activities......but I did design the floor for one of the local high school winterguards this year. :woohoo: I was supposed to be on staff this year, but I wanted to steer clear of the drama that's been unfolding. :rolleyes1

Thanks for starting the new 2009 thread. I have been visiting DCP and talking to some folks who attending BOA Nationals at Lucas Oil and so far the feedback on the stadium is not too bad. I guess the acoustics are doable.
I am anxious to attend finals in Indy in August.

I can’t wait to see what the Vanguard and Blue Devils have for 2009. Living so close to the Vanguard, I can’t wait to see who Martha is and why she gets a Ballet. Just kidding the “Ballet for Martha” should be an awesome show.
Born of a 1942 commissioned dance to premiere at the Library of Congress, 'Ballet for Martha' - Aaron Copland's composition for his friend and contemporary Martha Graham, will title the Santa Clara Vanguard summer program in 2009. Drawing upon the original influence of the American spirit, youth, optimism and hope, Copland expanded the Pulitzer Prize-winning ballet score a decade later, borrowing the title Graham used for her new dance, Appalachian Spring.
The SCV Cadets also seem to be creating something just as exciting. Called “Love”
"This year the design team wanted to explore a universal theme and we couldn't think of anything more thematically universal than love, the most powerful and transforming human emotion," says corps director Rob Ripley. "The show is being constructed not only to challenge our membership in new ways both in terms of music and movement but thoroughly entertain the audience in ways they expect and hopefully in unanticipated ways as well."

Two questions...
Has anyone oredered the DCI DVD's yet? I'm having problems with the DCI site. :confused3 Maybe I need to give Santa a call.
Second question, does your involvment in DCI help when packing for vacation? I read about people packing 2 weeks before a trip to Disney!
I can literally pack for ANY trip in about 20 minutes, thanks to my Drum Corps years! :thumbsup2

Hey all,
I got to perform this past Saturday night with the Boston Crusaders Sr. corps. What a hoot... Legendary is one word that comes to mind...I posted the video on You Tube. There are 2 parts. Part one includes Shangri la, El Cap, I Walk With God, and Ole (yep North Star :thumbsup2 )...Sop players, you gotta hear Billy Deans play Jerry Noonans solo! And yes, that is me playing my solo from 30 years ago. I kind of choked up a bit in the middle as I lost my dad 2 months ago, and I know he would have been right there. Part 2 consists of Masquerade, California Dreamin, and of course CONQUEST! Anyhow, enjoy it....Not bad for a bunch of "old guys and gals"!

Yep, really enjoyed them..I play with quite a few of them in Mass Brass. How about that bari solo in the Chicago Medley! Steve Dorgan, who was the original soloist from when the Lancers played that in 1971.
The whole night is really cool, and a spectacle that doesn't exist outside of the DCA championship weekend. I am really psyched that my 18 year old son has decided to come to the Crusaders with me and play in the drum line!

I have a site that I think you guys might like. It's MicroMarching (http://www.micromarching.com), and I've become addicted to it. You can design your own drill and animate it. People rate your show and the higher your score-the more points you get, which enables you to have more options for your shows. When you first start out you're only allowed to use a small band/corps, but after obtaining more points you'll be able to do indoor percussion or winterguard shows, and have the ability to change instruments with your larger band/corps shows, etc. etc. The java software is a little limited, but it's still fun.
I was giddy when my last show made the top-2 last week....especially considering I'm still not 100% used to the software tricks and tools yet. :yay:
Try it! TRY IT! :yay: :yay:

By the way, if you're using a Mac you might have some problems if you use Safari. I tend to like Firefox for this site.

I can't believe they had to cut out 1:14 of their show. That's almost as bad as when WGI removed all the audio from James Logan's 5 and a half-minute show due to them not getting proper rights for the Bjork music they were using. And they also took 1st place in their class! Oy! :sad2: I'm hoping the rumor I heard about guards competing in WGI not needing these rights for the upcoming season is true. It costs guards (and corps) quite a big chunk of cash if they want to use more mainstream music......which is why lots of guards have been performing to classical and/or not-so-well-known symphonic music lately.
Okay.....I'll zip my lip now. :surfweb:

the Ohio State University Marching Band!
So, what are they going to play? Considering they only play 3 songs, and I don't think "We Don't Give a ___ for the Whole State of Michigan" is quite appropriate for this type of event, that leaves us with 2 choices ... Either they'll play "Le Regiment de Sambre et Meuse", which they play very well, but it'll seem very weird to hear them playing it while marching in a parade formation, as opposed to a Script Ohio, or they'll just play "Hang On Sloopy" over and over and over.

I actually think it’s sad to see how drum corp has changed! Sometimes I feel the music has been lost... cough cough.... Cadets.
:yay:
From what I have been reading, Cadets should be pretty good this year. "Back to basics"! We can hope right?

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. I'll pop in once in a while to read and possibly post on what our high school is doing.
We did make semi finals at grand nationals but our show was too "kitsche" to make the cut. I loved it, it was a really fun season.
We are hosting a two day event for drumline and winterguard in February, which is always a lot of fun. Can't wait to see what our kids are doing this year. My son plays brass so we just go and support the other kids.
Oh and we just found out that one of our field commanders will be marching with BOA in the Rose Parade. How cool!
OK, talk with you all later.

Oh no........not West Side Story again. :headache:
Hoppy Hoppy Hoppy.....
Just because you're playing music that the corps played in the 80's and 90's does not mean you're going "back to basics". Especially when you're using narration and/or jazz piano. (I've gotten used to the Bb horns. It didn't bother me too much because playing with the Bb horns brought about several opportunities for potential members as well as the type of music that's being played on the field. However, if anyone went back to using G bugles I wouldn't be opposed to it either.)
Man.....I'm getting old.

It comes and goes for me. I marched back in the day when Boston was a bunch of street thugs, LITERALLY! And the fights would start at retreat and go all the way to the parking lot! Oh to be young again!
Then they seemed to get their act together, went to Europe, didn't pay their bills, and lost the Crusader name in bankruptcy court! I still have my "Boston" t-shirt!
Then in 2000 I fell in love with them! That ballad! Oy Vey!
They seem to be much more organized now, and on the up and up, but the last few years their shows have left me popcorn:: not

Cadets parade update.....
With 150 Cadets, including 14 alumni, on the final parade roster, the corps will perform Patriotic Medley and Strike Up The Band during the parade. According to parade officials, there is no stopping at the reviewing stand to perform.
The corps will wear its classic Maroon and Gold Westpoint-style uniform while the colorguard will appear in new maroon jumpsuits provided by Dance Sophisticates, said Heimbecker. An artist’s rendering should be available soon, he added.

Here is one of my favorite guards of all time rehearsing.
What people under the age of 25 don't seem realize is Michael Gaines made a DCI/WGI name for himself by directing and writing for this winterguard way before he started raking in the big bucks writing for 8+ units a year. The other day some kid told me, "He didn't start writing until 2000". A majority of the staff who is in this video were still on the Cavaliers' staff as of last year.
Anyhoo, this was back when Mike was still in his prime, before he became overworked and his shows started getting predictable. (That's just my opinion.)
Check out the hair on some of these girls.

But they are marching on the actual floor!!! :rotfl2:
WGI now only requires guards to be using equipment for 3-and-a-half minutes of their show. That must be so that they can use the rest of the 7 minutes they're allotted to emote, dance and fold up the floor.
Seriously......in the 80's most "Independant Open" shows (now referred to as "Independant World") would last between 6 and 7 minutes. But now there are guards whose shows are only about 4:45. It makes me wonder, "Was it really worth waiting for them to unfold/fold the floor tarp up for that?"
(Beware: There's a rant ahead.)
I'm bitter about the direction WGI has taken over the past several years. The guards that usually make the top 3 are now doing dance and are so busy being "emo" that it's hard to remember which guard did what. Sure, they'll do about 2 minutes worth of difficult equipment work which consists a lot of "tricks" (i.e. tossing a 6 on sabre and partially catching it behind their back).....but things like this are never uniform or clean because it's almost impossible to get every member to do it exactly the same due to varying body types and techniques/postures, etc. And oh....my.....gawd.....how does a judge judge technique when a guard has 5 or 6 different small groups of members on the floor each doing something completely different at the same time? Not to mention, where is one's attention supposed to be focussed during things like this?
Winterguard shows are not about the balance of staging and drill any more--It's mostly just about staging. (I've heard teachers say, "It doesn't matter where you're standing, 'Tom'....so long as you're in the top 1/4 of the floor." This makes me wonder, "If this teacher doesn't care, then why should I?" :confused3 There are, of course, some exceptions to this every year, but they're pretty few and far between.
I even e-mailed WGI a few years ago about these concerns and questions, when I was still designing/teaching. I never got a response.
(This concludes today's rant. You may now go about your daily business.) :p

The Cadets' 2005 show drives me nuts (not in a good way).....but they had a pretty amazing hornline that year, didn't they?
The last minute and a half of the '88 Scouts' show is one of my favorite moments in DCI history. Amazing horn line and color guard......but the drum feature is one of my least favorite of all time. It's kinda funny how that works.
I'm just being judgmental tonight because I didn't have any margaritas.
I like/am familiar with a small handful of the guards who are going to be at the Tampa regional. You might want to give it a try. Paradigm used to be from Florida, but I don't think they're around any more. It's a shame.....Their last few years in competition they had really good shows. :confused3
Florida seems to be the "new Ohio" as far as WGI is concerned. The last few years they've had several guards that have been making finals and even taking gold in their class (Flanagan High School).
Okay....I need to go to bed.

I used to work for a food service/catering company. It can be done. :thumbsup2 Especially if you buy all the basics (milk, bread, lunch meats, etc.) ahead of time from companies like Sysco, where you get bulk discounts.

Yesterday my 2008 Phantom Regiment DVD arrived and I was in my happy place watching it with my family today. My DS and DIL were in awe of the show and were sorry they had to miss the 08 season because DIL was pregnant and unable to travel.
My 6 mo old granddaughter was loving the flags and I think we hooked her on DCI. I am trying to convince her to try out for PR while my DIL is pushing for The Cadets. I know we have some time before she's ready, but I can't wait to shop the marketplace for stuff for her this summer.
Looks like I will be attending the PR show, the Orlando show, both nights in Murfreesboro and finals week! I am going to try and sneak in both Toledo shows as well.

Hey there! This is my first post on this thread. I'm a Velvet Knights alum (91-93) and so is DH (89-93).
Anyhoo....I just checked the line-up for 7/11. Looks pretty good. We'll be out there from 7/5-7/17. DH and I might get a babysitter. Only thing is, I hate parking at the Citrus Bowl! Ugh! If there's one deterrent, that's it. Still, that'd be pretty cool. We get a little tired of only seeing the west coast groups in the early part of the season when shows can still be a little rough.

Only thing is, I hate parking at the Citrus Bowl! Ugh!
OMG I don't think I ever shared this story! :rotfl2:
Last year we went to "that" show, and ended up parking in the (I think) Elks lot! It was some sort of club like that! Anyway, the guy wanted us to park on a slope leading down to a lake, actually we would be the first vehicle, right next to the lake! Shrek is freaking out! "I'm not parking here!" But I was chomping at the bit to get out to see warm-ups! "Just park it!"
So after the show we go to leave. Anyone who has been to Central Florida knows the grass is wet at midnight in August! Shrek starts the truck up and what do we do? Start sliding into the lake! Now he is swearing like a sailor! Being the cool headed drum corps guy I am....I said hold on! I got out of the truck and walked about 10 feet looking for help when I noticed an odor! You know that odor that comes from a DCI parking lot? (And its NOT bus fumes!) :rotfl2:
I had found some kids from a corps "relaxing"!
They freaked when I just waltzed over and asked them if they would help us!
The odor causing problem went behind a back like I was gonna call the cops or something!
I laughed out loud in my head! Do these kids think they are the first ones to ever go on tour? :confused3 Jesus I competed against the Bridgemen in the early 80's!
So long story short, I had to hold the contraband while they pushed Shrek out of the mud!
We laughed the whole way home!
Drum corps never seems to change!

I think the easiest way to verbalize it is "creative differences". (I tend to like the term "drama", but it always has such a negative ring to it. :lmao:) Other than that, I'm not too sure about the exact specifics. I know the drill writer moved on to another corps, but I don't remember which one off the top of my head. There have been so many staff changes in the past several months, both with winterguards and drum corps across the country, that it's hard for me to remember who's where and why.

Just for fun.....
The directors of the Michigan State and Indiana University Marching bands were in tonight! It was fun talking to them!
Got me to thinking, this is something I want to see in person before I die!
Not sure why, but it looks fun! It's the Tennessee Band marching into the stadium. Anyone who has ever marched can only imagine marching into a crowd like that!

I have always loved malaguena since I saw Blast and have tried to watch it from any corps who has done it. There's nothing like cranking drum corps out of your car with the windows down and sunroof open!

Not a big fan of Blue Devils, but this sounds fun!
On the heels of the market crash of 1929 and standing at the gateway of the Great depression - 1930 was a year of complexity and contradiction. The contrast of an economic storm-front and the beauty of American optimism present a collage of the cultural unknown.
With an undeniable foot in the present, the 2009 Blue Devils take a look back at a year when faith and uncertainty were suddenly in a dance of the indefinite. To stand in the face of a tempest or take a seat in the dream of diversion, the artist and innovators of 1930 generated a broad emotional landscape. From the buoyancy of Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm" to the multifarious "Piano Variations" of Aaron Copland, the Blue Devils offer a modern exploration of one single year. A year that would herald its number one popular song "Happy Days Are Here Again" and produced the future Judy Garland classic "Get Happy".
With the 2009 program "1930", the present and the past convene in a theatrical conversation of passion and exhilaration. Through unique visual and musical composition, the Blue Devils continue to showcase the world's most accomplished young performers as they travel the US offering a distinctive approach to contemporary drum and bugle corps.
Albert Einstein said, "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science". The year he made this profound statement? 1930.

Has anyone bought tickets for the DCI theater show for this Wednesday? I'm having major problems. One of the theaters I tried to get tickets at just said, "No tickets are being sold at this theater".....so I just assumed they might've been sold out since it's a popular theater. Then I actually went through with the purchase of tickets for another theater. As soon as I clicked "make purchase" it said "This theater does not accept electronic tickets--Transaction unsuccessful".......however, my bank account says otherwise. I'm probably going to have to call the theater tomorrow to see if I have tickets waiting at will call. If they don't I'll have to either call MovieTickets.com or my bank to let them know there was a mistake. :headache:
Having said that, here's another warning: Some theaters are charging a lot more for the seats than others. There are 2 theaters here that are charging $12.50, while another one is charging $20! Just a quick warning for you guys before/if you decide to get tickets.

Uuuuuugh! What a headache! I called MovieTickets and they said the transaction didn't go through. They told me to call the theater directly and they said they had no record of my purchase whatsoever either. They told me to call my bank, who then told me the transaction is "pending" which means the theater could still collect the funds.
Jeeez! :headache: Okay.......I could go to the will call at the theater on Wednesday and be told that I never purchased tickets, at which point I need to call my bank back and tell them to remove the charges.
Seriously.....buyer beware when buying tickets for this show......or when using sites like MovieTickets.com. :sad2:

I say just miss the show, get your money back and subscribe to the DCI Fan Network. Only $59 for a full year's access to A LOT of drum corps shows!
I'll be a team player and send you a copy of the 2008 Phantom show. I was one of the lucky ones that bought early and didn't get the cut version.
Went to Finals this year btw. Spartacus. Best show EVER.

I can tell you, without that man, there would be no Garfield, Bergan County, or Holy Name! They would have folded, gone bankrupt, done deal! Has he pushed the envelope a little too far? Perhaps. But that's what the Cadets do.
Do I agree with every thing he has done?
Absolutely not!
Do I agree with him keeping the Cadets alive, playing for the re-dedication of the Statue of Liberty, the Macy's parade, the Olympics, the Inauguration Parade, winning multiple DCI championships, and providing a great education to hundreds if not thousands of youth?
Oh heck ya! :thumbsup2

Well that was interesting.....
The sound did not work at all for Bluecoats! Some gal went down to complain, said they could not rewind or fix it, it was a satellite feed. Well they did rewind it, but the sound still sucked! They finally got it fixed right before SCV, but honestly, my stereo here at home sounds better! :sad2:
Not sure I would do this again, unless I couldn't go to finals, then I probably would go to the Thursday night show.
My favorite part was the camp reports! I would pay $12.50 any year at the theater for 2 hours of camp reports like they did! I really liked that! :thumbsup2
In all honesty I could have stayed at home and watched DVD's, and the popcorn would not have set me back $12.00!

My color guard group (its name shall remain unspoken so I don't get pointed for it ) had a really good rehearsal last night. Even though we only have 19 more days left until our Pride parade, I think we're in really good shape. Lots o' zig-zaggy drill.....lots o' humorous flag work.......lots o' "new school" work, which I think will be really effective. If we have 50mph winds like we did last year we're in big trouble because there are a lot of lofty tosses. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm excited about it. We're going to have 21-22 performers this year, which I believe is the most we've had in a few years.
Oh and....(brace yourselves)......I'm going to be performing on rifle at the end-of-the-parade rally performance! :scared1::scared: The mysterious equipment known as "the rifle" has always been my enemy.....but I told myself I had to do it just to prove to myself that I could. my dh & I are going to the DCI finals on 8/08/09 in Indy & to pick our son up & bring him back home.

My question is: do they serve beer or alcohol @ these events, we've never been.
this is the 1st time our son has ever auditioned or made the corp.

No offense, but that was the worst stadium EVER for DCI finals.
Since Lucas is a pro football stadium, they definitely have beer stands. Depends on the city of Indianapolis. They might be reluctant to sell beer at a "youth" event. There's always tailgating! :woohoo:

Performed last night with the Crusaders Sr. corps for the annual "Spring Fling" official unveiling of the Jr. corps show. I have to say in all the 52 years (yep, all my life) I have been involved with drum corps, this is THE best show I have heard the Crusaders do! Wow factor is big. The percussion line is tight as can be. The 72 horns I listened to were absolutely phenominal for this time of year. One listen will tell you that they are ready. I have not seen the drill portion of this as of yet, but if it is anywhere close, look out! "The Core of Temptation" is truly a symphony of beauty! Can you tell I am excited for the kids?
BTW, they went wild for us 'ol folk as we opened the night with Crusader traditional music and a couple of North Star favs. They were so kind to us... They made me proud to be wearing Waldo even if I am a transplant from North Star. :thumbsup2 Tonight we get to perform in Everett with them once again. I gotta see if I can get a video of them tonight.
Back to the kids. See them, cheer them, support them. I am amazed and they have made me a believer. They become the first to offer a teaser, and you can see it here: http://v2.thefannetwork.org/?network_id=1&ensemble_id=5904&vod_id=0c6d64f3-54c1-42b6-8568-c74f55ca797e&mode=viral

Have you guys listened the Cadets' closer yet? It's very similar to their '94 closer but with a few modern tweaks. (Layered horn effects, tempo changes, etc.) I'm not sure how I feel about the pit/battery book yet. They have a long way to go, but I'm actually pretty impressed.
