Ohio always used to get really good shows here late in the season, but now all the good shows are at the start of the season. :sad1: There's one here in Columbus towards the end of the season, but it's not exactly the line-up I wanted to see. :snooty: I'm guessing due to the location of Finals, all the eastern/midwest corps are scheduled to be elsewhere during late July and early August now.
I've noticed Texas has a few amazing shows scheduled. Soooooo not fair. :sad2:

Besides finals, the best show I've ever been to was in Massillon, Ohio last year. Great facilities, excellent line-up (Blue Devils, Bluecoats, Vanguard, BAC, Blue Stars, Troopers and a few others) and amazing encore by Bluecoats and Vanguard.
Btw, I have a video of the entire Bluecoats standstill on facebook. PM me and I'll add you as a friend so you can see the video. GREAT stuff!
...and yes, Texas has some great shows this year. Too bad I'm moving to Florida next week. Oh well. A few of my sources tell me they're trying to bring a show down to South Texas i.e. Corpus Christi in the near future. That would be fun, but insanely hot.

Yeah, the Massilon show is the one my local friends usually go to, but if I remember right the line-up this year isn't as good as it has been in the past. (I could be wrong. I'm not feeling well, so it is possible.)

Strange turn of events, but anyone going to Toledo or Normal for shows?
DH, Niece and I are taking a road trip to the Rockford show this coming weekend. I am thinking about the Toledo show if I can talk someone into going with me on a weeknight. I hate the fact that the Toledo show is during the week and not on the weekend!
I will also be in Orlando, Murfreesboro and Finals.

Ya I hear the Scouts got a new piece of equiptment for their kitchen this year....a snow cone machine and a bottle of Bourbon! :rolleyes1
OK here is what happened....
The Scouts had to move, so they rented three school busses to take the kids. Put the equiptment in the equiptment truck (which is packed to the gills) and packed up the kitchen. This leaves the luggage which is usually put in the bottom of the touring bus. Since they were using school busses for only one day they had to get creative where to put the luggage. Any spot that was open got a suitcase, and in this case I guess one piece of luggage was put in the oven. Somehow when the truck started moving the the oven somehow turned on....
When you are in drum corps ya have to get creative sometimes....
Now pass the Mint please! :lmao:

Looks like everything worked out for the best.....
Fortunately everything was handled well and the worse was adverted. The food truck was being used to haul luggage during the move from Baraboo to East Troy. Our charters are not yet with us and we had rental school buses with no luggage capacity. The bags were temporarily set in a place that exposed them to high temperature from the cook top. No real damage to the food trailer.
Two bags were lost and those members got to make a trip with Dan to have the corps replace the items lost.

So proud of the kids from little ole Toledo Ohio!
The Journey of ONE has officially begun!
It was 11:58PM on Tuesday night when the buses began rolling from the GLASSMEN Rehearsal Headquarters in Wausseon, Ohio. Cheers erupted across all of the buses as the corps began to head East. The Journey of ONE has officially begun!
First stop? Washington DC. The GLASSMEN have the honor of bringing their popular ENTERTRAINMENT program to the steps of the Department of Education Building in Washington DC for the MENC Music Education Week in Washington.
"The directors and administration at MENC (The National Association for Music Education) are very grateful that we're making the trip to their event. It's an awesome way to kick off the 2009 Season! Taking the time out of rehearsal before the first show to do a gig in our Nations capital in support of music education on ALL levels across the United States is a great way for the GLASSMEN to continue our commitment to education", says executive director Brian Hickman. "The entire corps is excited about this, and it's a great way for the GLASSMEN and the Drum Corps community to present themselves as active partners in music education", he added.
The GLASSMEN are set to take the stage at 11:15 a.m. on June 18th at the Department of Education building at 400 Maryland Avenue. Following their performance, the signed Petitions for Equal Access to Music Education will be presented to Education Secretary Arne Duncan, followed by a march to Capitol Hill to visit members of Congress.
The GLASSMEN will grace the stage with other celebrity supporters such as basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, actress and singer Florence Henderson, Mrs. America 2009 Maureen McDonald, and "Funky Winkerbean" cartoonist Tom Batiuk.
After the performance, the GLASSMEN will refocus on preparation for their first show, Friday night, in Chambersburg, PA!

I probably shouldn't have considering my health, but I performed with the guard in the Pride parade today. Let me just say two things here.....
1. Sunscreen is your friend. I learned that the hard way today. (Call me "Crispy".)
2. Spinning flag in gale force winds is next to impossible.
Flags flew everywhere. I stopped counting the drops after around 12. Oddly enough, our flag exchanges were relatively clean.
Despite it all, we had a great time.

I just got home from a weekend in Chicago and Rockford and despite the torrential rainfall in Chicago yesterday that caught us about 4 blocks from the hotel. a torrential downpour in Rockford that caused a short power failure at our hotel, I at least got to see me some DCI, even if it was a standstill. It was amazing hearing those horns again. I'm not crazy about the electronic music and the mac books, but like all things, DCI has to evolve.
The drawbacks to the weekend were a terrible train derailment in Rockford that was announced at the stadium and the fact that my car was rearended in Chicago on the way home.
Would I go again? In a heartbeat!
Next trip....Orlando show!! (Maybe Toledo if I can find someone to drive down there with me)

We lucked out and were able to park in the paved lot. There were announcements made during the show to please be careful when exiting the parking lot/grass. The goal was to leave it the way it was found. After that rain, no chance of that happening.
I was so happy to see the stands almost full. We had prepurchased $25 seats and all of them were filled around us. One thing we found amusing was that the Racine Scouts came out in full uniform with their guard on the track. Next corp came out in full uni but no guard. Next corp came out sans hats. Next 2 corps came out sans tunics. Next corp came out in T shirts and shorts. I figured by the time Phantom Regiment came out, they'd be in street clothes.

Just got back from the Toledo show...
After an hour and a half rain delay the show finally started.
I liked just about every corps, but Holy Name blew me away! I know, more West Side Story, but this show has the potential to win! Gave me goosebumps and tears over the 10 minute run! Cavies have a nice show, but I dont see it in the top two. Boston was good, but nothing to write home about. I love Crossmen! The show was real dirty, but once they clean it it's gonna be nice! The entire corps is wearing capes this year! Glassmen were much stronger than in years past, and I hope they can finally break out of 11th place. I was hesitante about the use of the synthysisers this year, but from the corps I saw tonight I was pleased with the addition, and that shocks me being an old timer like I am.
Thats about it for now, I have a 7 hour drive ahead of me tomorrow, so off to bed!
Go see Holy Name if you can! :thumbsup2

WGI as in WinterGuard International.... the huge colorguard competition in Ohio???
I was in the colorguard my freshman year of high school. I was in the B guard, saber line. And the other half was in A guard... which actually went into the next level because of the previous year. I've rarely found any one that ever knows anything about colorguard or the competitions. I would love to find video of my old high school's team now. I heard it went down the crapper a couple years after I left.... of course that was 10 years ago now.

Yes indeed Crown beat Cavies, not only that but Bluestars beat Boston!
Crown's show is amazing! I got a little of it on video, will try to get some more tonight! If they whoop the Cavies here tonight in Chicago there may be a riot!!
Crown's show is "The grass is greener on the other side". There is a LOT of green on the field! The uniforms, plumes, most of the flags. The theme of the show really doesn't come through till the very end, but the season is early. I will tell you when they wrap up the show with the same music that they start the show with it is amazing!
Bluestars drag a ton of crap on the field for their show "The factory". Basically its a show about working in a factory before and during WW2. Odd, but very good! The must drag 25 6 foot tables with sewing machines on the field :confused3 and the usual amps and stuff. Takes them forever to set up!
The most dissapointing of the evening was Phantom. Don't get me wrong, if this were any other year I would probably be ga-ga over them. But after last year I just expected so much more. The red violin theme is nice, and its a great show for the Regiment, but it just doesn't hold a candle to last year.
The weather is nice up here, everyone is complaining about the heat and humidity! :rotfl2:
I have internet at this hotel tonight, so I will try to recap after the show....

Gah, it would be amazing to see Crown take it all this year. Found out yesterday my college graduation was moved up a week and I'm considering going to finals....Hmmmmmm....
Bluestars = BOA. Meh. Loved their 2008 show though and hope they do well with their 2009 show. I still think it's weird to see them in world class. When I was with Revo in 2003, Bluestars were our main competitors.
I haven't seen Phantom's show yet (I'll have to catch it on the Fan Network soon), but I too think they're going to have trouble topping Spartacus.
The more I watch SCV's show on the Fan Network, the more I'm totally loving it! The company front at the end is pure heaven...old-school Vanguard. :worship:

Okay........I'm going to get really crude here, so prepare yourself.
Cavaliers: I loved the show the first time I saw it......back in 2002 when the Plymouth Canton Educational Park Marching Band did it! Same music. Same "push/pull gags" with the ropes. I think Michael Gaines is wonderful, but the design team is really starting to rely way too much on things they've accomplished in the past to carry their most recent shows. Honestly, for the last 4 or 5 years I've watched Cavies it's felt like I've been watching PCEPMB. Except PCEPMB has done everything several years before Cavies. I guess what I'm trying to say is, The Cavies are no longer cutting edge in this activity. Sorry. Having said that, I hope they start pushing the creative envelope again really soon.
Holy Name Cadets: The first time I saw the show last week I was somewhat pleased. To me it just felt like a WSS medley with no real purpose, although there were a couple moments of real brilliance. And THEN....I saw what they had changed over the past couple days (and it's been a lot) and it blew my mind. How they were able to change as much as they did in only a few days is beyond me, but it improved the show enormously. (I love the condensing company front at the end, almost as if to say, "We're going to bring back our 1990 closer.....but we're also going to bring something new to the table.....so sit back or your face may melt off!" :cool2:) I wish them the best. They have the potential for another gold, but we'll just have to wait and see. April is once again on tour with the guard, so they should start going insane in about a week or so. (Love ya, April. Mean it. :lmao:)
Carolina Crown: What can I say? How cool would it be to see them place in the top 3? The crowd in Indy would go nuts. If they get everything pulled together I think their show will be absolutely amazing. They still have a long way to go, but I can definitely see them doing it. I must admit.....I like the green plumes. :rolleyes1
Blue Devils: ...............erm...........um..........urrrrm... ....
Sorry, guys. I'm not seeing it yet. The chairs make it feel like one of your early 90's shows gone wrong. Looks like they're in need of some tender east coast love. :lmao:
Okay, I'm done being a jerk.

PCEPMB? My kids used to march in competition against them here in SE MI. They were something to see and there wasn't another band in their flight that could beat them. I saw that show in 2002, also!
I am still disappointed that the weather was horrible last week in Rockford, but I have to say the Cavies music didn't do much for me. I'll decide after I see it "on the field" Next stop Orlando, then 2 nights in Murfressboro, then Toleldo followed by 5 days in Indy.

Ohhhh yeah. I grew up in Michigan, and while I was marching there were only 3 times I saw them get beaten in Michigan.
-One of those times we beat them at a Trenton competition! (WOOHOO!)
-My freshman year they took 2nd at States, but won BOA Grand Nationals. :confused3
-My junior year they took 3rd at States, but I think it had to do with a really severe 2 or 3-point penalty they acquired from being on the field too long.

I'm sorry, Mike. I was wondering why there were no scores for that show.
There's a video of Crown's show on YouTube that I watched and I'm really excited to see where this show goes. (I had to watch it from the end zone last week, which really wasn't a great place to watch from.) This show has a level of creativity that hasn't really been seen in DCI in the last decade, and its this kind of creativity that I'm wishing the rest of the top 12 corps would introduce into their programs. It reminded me of the 80s and early 90s when corps would try something different every year in order to tell a musical story, as opposed to recycling the same drill, aesthetics and musical styles like a lot of corps tend to do now. If I had Crown's director in front of me I'd grab him by the shoulders and tell him, "Don't you even think about worrying what the other corps are doing. Keep doing what you feel is right and what is important to you." Hopefully they'll be rolling rock that starts something in the world of DCI.
Can you tell I'm liking their show this year? :yay: :woohoo:

What a surprise to see CROWN on top. How cool is that?
Mom got out of the hospital yesterday so I am planning on flying down with DH on Friday (instead of today) for the Orlando show.
I'll be the old lady cruisin the souvie trucks before and after the show.

Looking at the scores on dcp, I have to admit this is one of the most interesting years in awhile. There is no clear cut winner there yet! I am really looking forward to seeing Crown's show on Saturday. I refuse to even look at the weather forecast. After driving all the way to Rockford and having to see a standstill show because of the rain, I just want to see some marching!!
I got my SWA boarding pass this morning, so I'm good to go.

Pinnie, I hear ya! I paid $25 in Naperville to see the Racine Scouts! The good news is the afternoon showers have turned into "Morning showers" the past few days. In fact it looks like rain right now at 9:00am! The evenings have been clear, slightly cool, and nice. Lets hope for the best.
Now the million dollar question...
Why oh why are Cadets spending the weekend in Atlanta, skipping the Orlando show, then heading to Ft. Walton Beach FL on Monday for a show.
Is Hoppy that afraid of Crown? :confused3

There's nothing to be afraid of now. Crown has beaten them the last 4 or 5 shows. Come on Hoppy! What's one more loss to Crown?!

It sucked! Rain for 2 hours, then it ended up being a standstill. I left after Sprit, just couldn't take it any more.
And to top it off I took a mystery dream date :lmao: who had never been before! Oh well, the deal was a double date, and the second part is tomorrow night, so that should be a better evening!
The worst part is so much of the shows are written around the pit, and a standstill without the pit is just plain awfull.

Unfortunatly, they came right up to the stands. Great for those in the lower level. We were in the upper level, the sound was not good at all because of the way the "stadium" is built. And when you factor in no pits, lots of dead time. Like I said, I had to leave after Spirit, even I couldn't take any more, it was just BAD!
And speaking of stadiums, are the supposed to leak like a sieve? Dear Lord there was more water under the stands than out in the open! That place needs to be imploded! I actually got pan handled on the way to the car! Heck, at least last year I got to hold a J while those nice BAC boys pushed us out of the mud! :lmao:

I finally got to see some marching after being at stand still shows in Rockford and Orlando. I enjoyed the return to the 2 nights at Murfreesboro because it gave me a good chance to see almost everyone before finals.
Our seats were awesome, the weather was perfect. I love the stadium and the sufficiant woman's bathrooms and the fact there is plenty of room for the Marketplace.
Only fly in the ointment is that I got a call from my SIL saying mom is back in the hospital and will need heart ablasion on Monday. She better get better before I leave for Finals a week from Tuesday!

Looking at the scores not sure what to think! What is your take on Blue Devils?
Pinnie
07-26-2009, 08:52 AM
IMHO, the Blue Devils show is a park/sit and blow and no where near as complex as Holy Name Cadets show. Holy Name Cadets show is moving so much I would just say "WOW" and would have to say "WOW" again! Those kids can march! George has a winner this year and the crowd loved it!
The Cavies show is ok for me. It's missing "something" for me and I can't put a finger on what it is yet.
PR missed the mark for me, too.
One thing I noticed this year is the lack of props on the field. Except for The Factory and the sewing machines, there weren't any that I can remember.
OrlandoMike, I haven't been to Dollywood in years. We were in Gatlinburg a few weeks ago and it was my intention to go, but alas, we got called home because of my mom's illness. I thought I heard somewhere she sold the park?
I didn't know you cooked for Scouts!
Anyone here going to finals next week?

Pretty sure Dolly still owns the park, she is always there on opening day. And yes, I have cooked for the Scouts, Glassmen, and Magic. Boy I miss being on the road! Toughest job I have ever done, but tons of fun!
Ironically I have Thurs and Fri of Finals week off, but the wallet, lack of rooms, and no tickets means I will probably have to settle with the movies! :sad2:

Looking at the scores not sure what to think! What is your take on Blue Devils?
Their show is good, but it doesn't really do much for me. I mean, the guys can move, they sound great and they're clean, but ugh those chairs are so distracting! I don't think there should be that large of a spread between BD and Cavies.
I miss the BD shows of the early 2000's...ie 2000's Methods of Madness.

On a serious note, this flu thing has drum corps written all over it! Hope everything is OK!
After several members took ill over the last few days, the Blue Stars pulled out of the July 26 DCI Tour event in Rock Hill, S.C. The corps will head to Tennessee for extra rest preparing for tomorrow's event in Sevierville.
“We have been working closely with our medical consultants and local health care providers, and those not feeling well have received medical treatment,” said Blue Stars executive director Brad Furlano in a note to corps parents and supporters. “We have isolated those affected and are taking extra precautions with regards to our food service, cleanliness of the buses, and are stepping up the emphasis on hand washing and other preventative measures."

Well this was my first time missing DCI and having to suffer through the theater experience. You know what, if you cant make finals, this is a nice treat! The volume was a little low for the first half, but they finally got it right by the second half.
Wow, the shows this year are some of the best ever!
Troopers, so nice to see them back at their game, Loved the show!
Boston, so darn sexy it should be X-rated!
Bluecoats, didn't think I would like it, but I loved it.
Phantom, now that they have the new costumes for the feature players, I understand the story, and I love it!
SCV, I actually cried a little, what a beautiful piece of art they have this year.
Cadets...Music in motion for sure, darn the are marching fast!
Cavies, got what the deserved, good show, but nothing great.
Crown, wow! Go Crown, you deserve everything you are getting this year!
Now about BD. What am I missing? Undefeated for sitting on a chair playing? I just dont get it. I would have them behind Cadets and Crown, but ahead of Cavies...but I guess thats why I am not a judge.
The stadium looks nice, the sound was a little distorted, but what ya gonna do with an indoor venue? I loved the black back drop, it really heped with the visual programs.
It was nice to see the OrlandoMom team, always a good time! Now I need to go make some Hamburger Helper, I spent the grocery budget on popcorn, pizza and a soda! :sad2:

We are at the Staybridge, right across the street from Lucas Oil. Wew went to I & E on wednesday and found out the Cavies pulled out because of illness.
Yesterday we attended quarterfinals at Lucas and I have to say I am very disappointed with the sound in the dome. I can honestly say that it's awful!
The corps shows are great. There are a few corps with holes due to illness. Yesterday we heard that BDs had confirmed cases of swine flu but later news denied it.
We are off to Open Class and then lunch.
Questions?

Dumb question, but how is the food in the dome? Are the prices ridiculus, and how are the selections? I would think since its brand new they would offer a little more than the standard hot dogs and peanuts.....

It's an energy drink, put out by coke, much like redbull. And since the theater was on Disney property, and Disney is very much a coke palace, that was my only option.

I have a small tote bag that I put some bottles of coke and some snacks. The bags were NOT checked at entry.
I am still in shock over the BDs score tonight and so were most of the people in the stands. Their drill was so simple compared to Holy Name..
We drive back to Detroit early tomorrow morning. I can't believe the season is over and ended on the note it did.
It was hard to find someone happy with Lucas Oil. The sound was horrible, the security was lax. We were in the Fans of DCI seats and someone in our row left during intermission and someone stole their bag of t shirts while they went out for a bathroom break. There was no one posted at the tunnels to stop people from sitting on the steps and not entering during a corp's performance. The dome never opened, so that was a disappointment, too.
Fan Favorite award took the place of the Spirit of Disney award since they are no longer a corporate sponsor.
I have to really think about coming back to finals next year.

As much as I know some people hate the changes that have been made by DCI(and I am not a fan of some of them either) don't forget that these kids get up everyday and work very hard to pursue a goal. If I won the lottery, I'd give a lot of money to the Blue Stars because I believe in what they(and every other) corps does. Don't lose sight of that. Sure, maybe you won't go to finals, but maybe just stick to the theater broadcast or get DCI fan network and support them that way.
It bugs me that Disney isn't a corporate sponsor anymore. They have magic music days, yet they don't sponsor the most competitive marching music event. Of course with the decisions they make these days, I shouldn't be surprised.

Don't give up on DCI quite yet.
There are some incredible things happening out there.
Congrats to the Blue Devils for the title. The "show" didn't do much for me, but the musical book will be on my iPod very soon.
SCV played incredible music. And featured the music. And was breathtaking!Unfortunately they did not get rewarded as much as they should have.
Both Blue Stars and Troopers back on the field on Saturday night. Blue Stars put so much emotion (and fabric) on the field it was incredible. I think the show wanted to out-fabric the Phantom 1812 show from years back. Now they just need to come up with a show to break out the Hot Pants and really get the old school group on their feet! :lmao:
And Troop proved you can stay true to yourself and still move forward. Now we just need to get Madison in the right direction. Maybe a re-visit to Jesus Christ Superstar is in order. And our Converse clad friends from the Velvet Knights. That would be one incredible finals with those 4!
The Academy was one of my favorite shows of the season. They embraced a theme, but did not oversell it. Can't wait to see them on Saturday night next year.
And heck...I didn't even hate The Holy Name Garfield Cadets of Bergen County this year. Not that much they can do will EVER top In The Springtime... and To Tame the Perilous Skies. Those shows were amazing. But they really do know how to march like no one's business.
there were some shows that I will fast forward past on my DVD's (glassmen)and some that I will have ingrained in my screen from overplaying them (Blue Stars).
Not sure about the stadium. Think of the other option. Sitting in Bloomington with storms rolling through on a Semi-finals night. Then people would complain that if it was indoors, the rain wouldn't effect the corps.
If it isn't your cup of tea...go somewhere else (to watch that is). See a show in Phoenix, or Pasadena, or Stillwater, or Madison, or Allentown. If people "speak with their wallets" then hopefully DCI will look at options for change. Of course a long term contract with Camp Randall would be great, but that aint gonna happen.
And Zulemara said it best. The real story is the incredible things the kids on the field accomplish.
Oh...and thanks O-Mike. That pic of the Troop DM made me smile. I remember seeing them live for the first time in 1987 at Drums Along the Rockies. I was in awe of them.

It's NOT the kids! I bought more tour shirts from various corps this year than I have in previous years.
My issue is how DCI is treating it's fan base. DCI needs to realize that without the fans and sponsors, there won't BE corps. Charging $125 for a seat on the 30 yd line on the 4th floor is not a way to keep fans happy. Not only that, some of those seats had an annoying hand rail in the site line.
They ran out of food in one area on Semi night, the security was awful and the marketplace was a pain to get to.
I want to be excited to go back to finals next year, but I just may end up in Murfreesboro and hear corps outside in a venue that is perfect IMHO for shows!

This is too funny. Leave it to a Disney Discussion Board to have a thread about DCI and WGI! I just completed my rook-out at the Bluecoats, and it was a summer I'll always remember! I also march in WGI as a member of Elysian Winter Guard out of Nashville. Back in high school, I was a marching member and then DM of the Clinton HS band out of Clinton, TN (2002-2006), so I guess I have the whole three-fold!

I just have a question for you. What did you think of Lucas Oil Stadium from a field standpoint? Was there a lot of echo for you? I know it had to be comfortable with the air conditioning, just would like thoughts from the field.

I started looking back at a few of the earlier posts in this thread....
One of the reasons I'm upset about the current state (i.e. the last 10 years or so) of WGI is that designers don't know how to design a show well any more. The designers are simply picking music because "it's pretty", so they think "it'd make a good show", and the problem with that is 99% of these shows are forgettable because most of them all have the same feel to them. (Trust me....I've worked with some of these people.) Even some of my friends who go to WGI Finals every year have problems naming the guards who did what. In the 80's and 90's the designers/writers treated their shows like one big conceptual production. You knew it was Pride of Cincinnati who was doing "that jail show".....and you knew it was Bishop Kearney who did "that Jackson Pollack show" because not only were they memorable, but they were original and stylistically distinctive to each unit. While some of the guards today do some amazing "tricks" with the equipment and have some wonderful skills, they're not really shows I'd want to sit through more than once.....and to me that's a huge shame. There seems to be a similar problem currently going on with DCI as well, but it's not quite as noticeable. DCI has some bigger issues to work out, but we'll leave that for another day. :rotfl2:

::yes::::yes::::yes::::yes::
You can't make it into an Open or World class guard any more unless you have dance experience. It's like a dance troupe. A dance troupe that emotes excessively......that has about 20 different things going on the floor at the same time. The person whose guard I'm helping with gave me this year's rules for time limits, etc. In our class the show has to be something like 4:30 to 5:30 minutes.....and the amount of time that equipment has to be in at least 6 members' hands is something like 2 minutes. What's the point? :confused3
Remember Union High School in 1987? (The "Mannequins" show?) That show was almost 7 minutes long, and they were using equipment for at least 6:30.

This topic hits me pretty hard for a couple reasons:
1. I marched with this organization....
and
2. I used to do work in an industry that involved branding, logo design and marketing.
Their identity is that they no longer have an identity, and this seems to be a trend with a lot of companies (and corps) at the moment. The people in marketing/branding have tossed aside branding and logos that are memorable and have just decided to use logos that at the time of production they think are "cool", which is forcing them to simply "blend in". This could be the result of several things including (but not limited to) the lack of design talent, or the desire to want to change logos every few years. I'm guessing it's a little of both. I can understand companies wanting to update their logos, but most of the companies who have recently changed them have pretty much taken all sense of recognition and company tradition out of them. Sure....The Cadets want to look toward the future and be a cutting edge corps and possibly get a new fan base--but at the same time they changed their name back to the "Holy Name Cadets" in order to bring back some of the nostalgic fans, so I'm not sure why they'd choose a logo like this. Since they've changed logos and names at least 6 times over the past 2 decades I think this is doing them more harm than good.
In short, this generation of designers and marketers is suffering from ADD.
Oh.....and have you heard? The old Holiday Inn and the new Holiday Inn had a baby.......

I'm hoping they switch the tour schedule around/the corps decide to travel to different cities since the Finals will be in the same place for the next few years. Central Ohio usually has pretty good shows the last week or 2 of the season, but this year all the really good shows were in the first couple days of the season, when no one was....you know.....polished. The Bluecoats weren't even here at the show that they're usually always at. :sad2:

The Orlando show has two problems...
#1 Its in the hood, literally!
and #2 Its rainy season here, and the show has a tendency to get rained out.
Easy problems to fix! Move the show to the Brighthouse stadium, and make it an early afternoon show, giving the corps the evening to enjoy the parks, rehearse, or travel.

MonorailMan is a bit peaved today. :headache:
I've been helping my friend on-and-off with his winterguards over the past 6 years in terms of music editing, floor/flag/prop design and occasionally drill/staging design.
Today this friend called me and informed me that my name will be on the WGI website as the person in charge of music and prop design. Here's the kicker.......I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THEIR PROPS THIS YEAR.....or any other year for that matter!! Every time I design something for him something ALWAYS happens at the last minute....
Example:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/artsycub/PoohFloor.jpg
I designed this floor/props for his guard a few years ago. They were doing a show based on Winnie the Pooh. Before designing it, I asked if any of the parents had access to power tools so that we could make trees out of plywood, to which I was informed repeatedly that there were SEVERAL parents who offered their services for doing this. I showed up at the warehouse where I was told I'd have about 7-8 hours to sketch out and paint the trees onto the wood. I soon notice that there's no wood to be found because all of the parents "dropped out". Instead there were white bed sheets sewn together laying on the floor. My friend came from behind me and put a can of spray paint in my hand and said, " You've got one hour", and laughed. We had to be out of the warehouse in an hour....and I had to spray paint bed sheets to look like trees. Needless to say, the props looked like an 8 year-old painted "stick figure trees"....and not in a good way. (I'm not a graffiti artist, fer gawd sake!) And, of course, guess who got credited for this.
On the day when we were supposed to paint the floor for this show I was told we had 4 hours (which wasn't a big deal considering we were going for a watercolor effect and had a big power sprayer). However....once again.....we only had an hour.
This garbage happens EVERY YEAR. This year, I wasn't even informed that they're using ugly giant gold mylar circles as backdrop props.....and yet he put MY name down as the one who designed them because he doesn't want to take credit for them. No wonder no one will let me work with their guard. I'm also the only one working for his guard(s) who never got paid, but the reason I keep doing it is because this is pretty much the only way I have access to helping with this activity. I went to an art school that demanded excellence and I just don't want my name associated with any of this because it's not only not up to my standard, but 90% of it isn't even my work. :sad2:
Sorry....I just needed to vent.
