We just took our first cruise ever, and are now HOOKED!
I never thought I'd want to go anywhere more than WDW and now, we are planning on taking one to two cruises and year.

I have to admit that I was a bit apprehensive about cruising in the first place. As a former flight attendant, I was never particularly interested in spending all of my time getting to where I wanted to go. I was also very, very nervous about cruising. We all know those people who are terrified to fly, well, I was one of those that was terrified to cruise. Why you might ask! I suppose I've watched Titanic one too many times and also had worries that I wouldn't be able to look over the edge, scared of heights as well. I was also concerned about being in the middle of the ocean not knowing how deep the water was underneath us.

In addition to all of that, I was so worried one or several of us would get sea sick since two of us get car sick easily and my DH doesn't do well on the tea cups at MK. We were all completely fine except for feeling a little dizzy. We had real rough seas the first night and several other moments to where you could really feel things pretty intensely.

After all of that, I was not scared at all once on board.

DCL has really got it together and has as much magic as WDW.

Thank you, thank you!

Is there a 12 step program for cruisers? I can tell I'm going to need one!:rotfl2:

It's amazing that Disney is so addictive even down to the cruises! I think they put some kind of drug in the food and drinks to keep us coming back.
I'm now thinking of working extra to help support my new habit.

I just don't know how I can possibly stand waiting a whole year to go back. I am having MAJOR withdrawals with post-cruise depression. No joke.

They don't drug the food, but there is some kind of electronic chip implanted in your brain as you board. After that, it's all down hill!! Don't even think about not planning another cruise, or they will turn up the juice on your chip!!:lmao: Welcome to the club!

Mickey's friend you are too funny! :rotfl2:

I believe it! Honestly, it was the most amazing trip we've ever taken. I never dreamed anything could compare or beat going to WDW.
I'm ready to go, just need money and DH needs extra vacation days, that's all!

That is so exciting to hear! My mom is terrified of cruising. We somehow talked her into doing one....Janaury of 2010.

I think she is a lil excited now. But, it is really nice to know that a nervous cruiser had a blast.

Is there a 12 step program for cruisers? Well yes there is.

1) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise
2) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise
3) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise
4) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise
5) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise
6) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise
7) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise
8) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise
9) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise
10) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise
11) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise
12) Rebook on board, wait until embarkation day and go on the cruise

and then repeat as necessary!

Or there's the following plan listed below.

1) Rebook on board
2) Get draged:confused3: (drug - yes DCL is a drug) off of the ship yelling and screaming
3) Suffer Post Cruise-ium Depression
4) Plan your next cruise
5) Shop for new cruise outfits (including Pirates Night clothes)
6) Download the ships horn to your cell phone
7) Surf the DIS
8) Ask Questions
9) Join up with your cruise meet and determine what "fish extender gifts you are going to give)
10) Make travel arrangements to Florida / port
11) Make Door Decorations
12) Create familiy cruise tee shirts
13) Review all excursions online - including ports you are not going to
14) Pack - just to see if everything fits
15) UnPack - because you're NOT going on the cruse for several more months
16) Make Final Payment
17) 90 days out (unless you are suite) book Palo, excursions etc
18) Call UPS several times per day asking "Where are MY Cruise Doc's!!)
19) Jump up and down and wet yourself when the cruise doc's actually arrive
20) Let us all here on the DIS know that your cruise docs have arrived
21) Pack
22) Remove half of the stuff in the suitcase because you know that you really won't be needing it (OK, this one takes at least 4 cruises to get down)
23) Find and secure photo ID and Passport (Tickets - we don't need no stinking tickets - as long as we have paid!!)
24) Get someone to watch the dog, take care of the cat and fish, water the lawn (nope - skip the lawn ... who wants to mow it when you return from such a wonderful trip)
25) Make sure plenty of room is on the credit card - for all of the wonderful drinks, souvineers, excursions, tips and most importantly step 1 - rebooking deposits!
26) Arrive in Florida the at least the day before your ship leaves so that you are in that happy, stress free, relaxed state, rested and ready to CRUISE!!

Notice this is NOT a 12 step program - its much more difficult (no disrespect to those who do suffer from addictions - I KNOW that our deamons are very real and this is not meant to demean any of those programs)

I spent many many years afraid to cruise. I pictured the Titanic and other ship wrecks. Well I loved DCL and the Wonder!! Of course we booked another cruise shortly after we returned from the first one. :) Welcome to the club.

So glad to read this thread as we are in the process of booking our first DCL cruise. My major concern is cruising with an almost 3 year old. Of course, if we are going to cruise with a child we know there is no better than Disney. We've read about all the kids' clubs on board, but they show as being for kids 3 and up. Can anyone tell me if they will let our child attend if she is almost 3?

Thanks so much!

My first Disney cruise was the WB Panama Canal. Can you say spoiled. Next will be the Northern European Capitals. Again spoiled!! Can you say a very EXPENSIVE addiction? Welcome to the club.

My name is Beth, and I am a DCL addict.:thumbsup2

Glad I'm not the only one with the addiction! I work so I can cruise... that's all the incentive I need to get out of bed and put up with all the junk that comes with working!!! Is it September yet??? ;)

We just went on our second DCL cruise, this time without the teenagers! Oh, gosh! What a great time! It was alot more relaxing and stress free..yes, teenagers can be stressful!!!!

Now I just need to save more quarters to go again! I also need a 12 step program..my husband thinks I'm crazy!

Have a magical day, everyone!

OP: Congrats on overcoming your fear and having a great experience! We just had someone in our group cancel two days before sailing because of that fear...wasted about $3K!

I'm on the DCL bus now - woo hoo!

:cloud9:

My father tells me that when he was in the Navy (WWII) they were told not to be concerned as land was never more than a mile away -- straight down!

Don't you love that Navy humor?!?

I'm in a similar state: I do not swim, cannot float, get seasick at the sight of a rowboat, and don't do heights (looking over the railing on Deck 4 in the evening still makes me feel a little icky), but LOVED the Disney cruise! We're going on cruise #6 in January and are booked on the WB TA in 2010. Love those sea days! pixiedust:

Glad you had a great time and the DCL addiction is almost as bad as the DIS addiction most of us suffer from.

I love the 12 step program the poster replied with its true the only cure for the addiction is another cruise!

My DS will be cruising in Jan 09, 15 days before his 3rd birthday. I called Disney and they said he would be able to enjoy the club as long as he is potty-trained. He is, so he will be going to the club. The CM said that the general rule is within 30 days of their birthday, a child can move up a club.

The best part is that we do not have to pay for an upgrade, because cruise rates are a little bit more expensive for 3 year olds compared to a 2 year old. I was told it was a little bonus.

My family and relatives just got back from the Wonder 11/9-11/3/09 cruise and almost everyone came down with Norovirus. I have been home several days and got it from other family members who got it on board.

certainly puts a damper on wanting to go on future cruises.

Yeah...DCL got us addicted to cruising and we were able to go on two great Magic cruises, but our addiction to cruising isn't something we can afford with DCL any more, so we've added Carnival and RCCL to our addiction. We've been able to go on one cruise a year so far since 2005.

Thanks to LoveableGlutton we have our first land vacation booked for next May which may just be a new addiction too!

Was it lime green kool-aid?

What I wish I had known the first time I cruised was to make a future cruise reservation onboard, even if you didn't know exact dates when - or if - you would cruise again. That 10% savings and $200 per cabin onboard booking credit (OBC) are a nice savings. You can get your deposit back as long as you back out before the payment due date (cat 4-12). And, apparently, people book "dummy dates" to secure the savings and then move the deposit to another date when they decide when/where they are cruising.

Secondly, don't take so many clothes.
