I have seen so many wonderful pics of the cruise by DIS'ers using digital cameras. What kind do you all have and do you like them. I am looking for ease of use and just basic functions for e-mailing photos, etc. maybe printing out some prints.

We have a Kodak DX3900. It takes great pictures (3.1 megapixels), has the digital zoom and uses the docking system (mostly for DH). He just presses the button and it sends it to the computer. Very easy to use.

We use a Minolta Dimage 2300 and are very pleased with it as well. When purchasing a digital camera keep several things in mind:
* They eat batteries up fast. You will need to bring a supply with you on your trip or invest in a couple of sets of rechargable batteries.
*Make sure you have enough memory capacity to make all the photos you want. The price of memory has come down a lot lately and gett 128 meg of memory should be no problem. Most cameras come with either 8 or 16 meg cards. I have 3 32 meg cards and 1 16 meg card.
*Several compananies out in the world offer prints from digital files but we always carry a film camera as well. I just like having my 35mm prints.
Purchase at least a 2.3 megapixal camera. You will find that the medium image size setting for this camera will give you quality photos for sharing on the net or viewing on your computer.
You will find that there are a lot of cameras made by most major manufacturers and they will produce a decent image. If I were you I would purchase one locally, try it out and see if it does what you want. If it doesn't carry it back and try another. It is the American way.

OK, heres the low down from my Minolta book.
A Superfine image takes 6380 KB of memory
A Fine image takes 850 KB of memory.
A Standard image (which I use) takes 330 KB of memory.
An Economy image takes 170 KB of memory.
To keep you from breaking out a calculator I have the following information:
On a 32 MB card you can put 4 Superfine, 36 Fine, 96 Standard or 188 Economy photos.
I find that the Fine images work well with my web page and sharing. You can print up to a 5X7 image with good quality as well.
Hope this helps.

We just bought a Sony P5 for our cruise coming up this weekend. When I post my trip report, you will get to see for yourself how well these pictures turn out. The camera is real cool so far, but hasn't had much testing done.

Since the digital camera question is up again, can someone please tell me how to get the pictures off of the memory cards?

I have an Olympus 3000 and I use a USB. I can get the slides of the pictures but can't download. We took about 136 high resolution pictures. When I go to download it says there is not enough memory. Do I need to get a writable CD?

I know this subject is off topic, but if anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it. My DH is driving me nuts about our cruise pictures!

Thanks!

Hi Folks

This is what I use for the storage problem. Great little product.
Digital Album (http://www.jobodigital.com/products/digital_album.htm)

I have a Canon G-1, with 2 128 mb cards and the above album. Took over 5000 pictures (five thousand) during a recent trip to Alaska and had no problems whatsoever. Resolution at very good. Hope this helps.

I recently bought a Nikon CoolPix 995. After a lot of exhausting research, I decided (as an ex-professional photographer) that this was the best camera for me. I had read about "poor battery life"... and all I can say about that is "phooey!" It is the least of my concerns! I just bought a backup and have that charging while using the other. I find the battery with a LOT of use, lasts me about a week, and with minimal use, lasts at least two! I did upgrade to a 256 CF... and that holds 161 pictures at the highest .jpg level. I figure for my next cruise I will bring two of these cards and that should handle my photo needs.

We have an HP Photosmart C200 and I really like it. It doesn't have a lot of the bells & whistles that more expensive digital cameras have, but that's okay with me. I basically use it for emailing pictures and posting pictures to our website and it does a great job with that. I believe this camera runs between $200 & 250.

Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention that we use an 8MB and a 16MB flash card in the camera. The 8MB card gives us 16 pictures on highest resolution and the 16MB card gives us 34 (although I usually use the middle resolution as I find the pictures are just as good for my needs).

We have a flash card reader that hooks into the USB port on our computer. This allows us to download pictures without wasting the batteries in the camera. Our new printer also has a slot for the photo cards, although I've not used it yet.

I see other posts about digital cameras really using up battery power fast but I have to say that has not been the case with this camera. We've had it for a couple of years and have only changed the batteries twice...and I use it a lot!

Our batteries seem to work well on our Kodak. I took the non-rechargeble type for the cruise so I wouldn't have to recharge. It worked well and we never had a problem.

As for removing pictures off the card, I am not sure about other types of digitals, but on ours, our program is set up so that when we transfer the pictures, it automatically removes the pictures from the card. However, you can also reformat your card which will also remove all pictures. Most digitals have that function to reformat.
