Cool. Did you request it or did they just tell you when you were checking in? What time did you check in?

We requested Somoa for the pool since it was July 4th weekend and we have 4 kids. We were assigned tahiti (i think that was the name - on the beach closest to the T&TC. When she first showed us where it was we were bummed until we walked over and realized they'd upgraded us to a castle view. it was great except that is was torture on the kids since we arrived on 7/1 and our first park day wasn't until 7/4.

We were upgraded in August. I knew of the upgrade 5 days before we went though when they sent the email confirmation to us (we had booked room only). I noticed the email said we were staying in an outer lodge standard room Club level. I thought it must have been a mistake because I booked garden view! I asked on the Disboards what this meant, and someone had to tell me that we received a little pixie dust before our arrival!

I have heard of people saying they asked if there were any upgrades at check in (it doesn't hurt to ask, and we always ask...the worst they can say is no). We always ask when we go to Vegas, and we almost always get something just for asking!

We checked in around 12:30 or 1:00. Our CM noted that we'd requested Tokelau, and I said yes, I'd done some research and it seemed to be the best GV location. He asked if I minded if he put us in a room he thought was good, and I told him "you work here, you'll know better than me!". And just like that, Castle View!!!

I am with you grannieminnie!

We check in on the Nov 22nd for a week at AKL and they only had pool view when I made the ressie. I called a while back and tried to upgrade to savanna view but she said there were no rooms available in the package I had for savanna view. They may be fully booked because it is Thanksgiving Week! I think I will ask when we check in what the cost would be to upgrade.

As for the timing of the holiday, we arrive the Sunday after and I'm hoping that lots of guests are heading back home, freeing up that great upgrade for me!! :lmao:

We stayed at the Poly over Columbus Day week and we paid for a garden view room. At check it we were told they had a great surprise for us and said that we were upgraded to consierge level in the Hawaii building with a castle view! It was such a great surprise. The Sangria drinks in the evening and the chocolate chip cookies were the best!!!!

We have 5-days to go until we check in at AKL.

We've booked a standard room but we're arriving quite late (7pm ish) so I'm hoping it won't be busy at check in and I will feel brave enough to ask for an upgrade.

I was thinking of saying "please can we have your nicest possible standard room - this is my baby's first holiday and I want it to be very special" (I'm 16 weeks pregnant!!!)

But as much as it would be amazing, we are just so happy to be going back we would happily sleep in the savannah with the animals!!!

In ten trips we've been upgraded three times.

January 2007 - we booked Poly gv and were upgraded to Poly TPV.

July 2008 - we booked standard BC room and were upgraded to CL.

October 2008 - we booked standard YC room and were upgraded to CL.

I would never, ever ask for an upgrade. I think that would take away the
"pixie dust". When it happens it truly is magical, otherwise we're satisfied with the room we booked.

Not while at the resort (we ended up switching resorts due to frustration with the entire situation, though we did have to spend 2 nights there), but when we got home after much aggravation and a few phone calls.

Why did you get downgraded?

They bumped us down because they thought we had booked the only category available just to get a room. They bumped us down without notifying us or asking. It wasn't even mentioned at check in. It wasn't until I went in the room that I saw it wasn't what we booked and paid for. (we were on a package so it was paid for in advance)

We were there in Sept. during free dining and had booked 5 nights at POR. When I went to check-in and after speaking with my DD11, the CM told me that we had been selected to upgrade to SSR. Well, we don't really like that resort 'cause there's no Disney theming there. They picked up on our hesitation and then, after going to the back to speak with the powers-that-be, told us we could stay at ANY deluxe resort of our choice at no extra charge!! :yay: I chose the CR and we got an AWESOME room (5150) in the Garden Wing. It's located at the end of the building and our car was parked just around the corner! This was the view we had. For a bit of perspective, the WL is located just beyond the trees.

Just back late last night and were bumped up ( again) from gv at GF to lagoon view (view of Poly, beach and wedding pavillion). Booked bounceback for WL but I just called this morning and changed to GV wing at CR. That is the only thing available on bounceback there right now unless you go to CL at $575 a night

I was at BC about two weeks ago and got upgraded from a CL garden view to a CL lagoon view. What was interesting was that the cast member checking me in never said anything about the upgrade. She told me my room number, I went to the room and only when I got there did I realize that it was a lagoon view. Not complaining, mind you, I just thought it might be handled in a different way.

Are there ever any upgrades for DVC members? Staying at the SSR in a 2BR. Is there a concierge level there?

As per DVC guidelines, room categories cannot be changed, aka, no upgrade.

Just curious as to why they upgrade people? Is it for any occassion or do they do it at random? I'm booking a room for March and it will be our anniversary so I was going to tell them that when I booked. Is this the sort of thing they upgrade for?!

I think I've seen the "busyness" we're in for when trying to make dining ressies. It's been a fight in every situation!! I don't understand it, with the economy the way it is, and the fact that the same time last year, my sisters and I had good luck with regard to the crowds. Here's hoping we will still be "blessed" with an upgrade tho!!:thumbsup2

Booked a courtyard view bunkbed room, ended up in a regular courtyard view with 2 queens.

So interesting. On our last trip, we asked for a downgrade! I'm not kidding. We'd booked AKL savanna-view bunk bed, but when we saw the bunk-bed room, we weren't happy with it. Just DH and me and, to us, the bunk seemed to take up a huge portion of the room.

We went back to the front desk and asked for a regular savanna-view room, no bunk. They really didn't want to make this change for us. I pointed out to them that this was a downgrade we were asking for and we weren't asking for a price adjustment.

After a little back-and-forth, we were able to get a regular savanna-view room that we were very happy with. BTW, we didn't ask for and didn't receive a price adjustment, but we were fine with that, since we loved the room we ended up in.

The whole process didn't take that long, but in our experience, they kind of make you "work" for a room change at AKL when you're not happy with where they've placed you. OTOH, we were once upgraded--no charge--to savanna-view, on a trip where we'd booked a standard-view, since no savanna-view rooms had been available when we made the rez. So we've had all kinds of experiences with the front desk at AKL. In the end, though, every time we've been there, we've ended up with a really wonderful room.

No concierge at SSR. The only upgrade from a 2 bedroom would be a Grand Villa and there aren't too many of those.

Maybe not always true...we were at SSR last August on points, booked a studio and were upgraded to a one bedroom - great location and nice view too!

No need to hint. You can just ask "Is it possible to get an upgrade?" or "Is there possibly an upgrade available?" These kinds of questions aren't greedy or confrontational and require little if any gumption to ask. ;)

When we were upgraded from standard-view to savanna-view at AKL, we asked them at check-in if there were any savanna-view rooms available and what would the price difference be. We told them we hadn't been able to book a savanna-view room, which was what we'd really wanted.

The front-desk CM went into the Mysterious Back Room, then returned with a savanna-view room for us. When we asked what the price difference was, she smiled and said "nothing." That was just one of many magical things that happened on that trip.

Anyway, my point is: If you ask in a happy, neutral, curious, non-demanding way, the worst that can happen is you'll get the room you booked. I mean, they won't give you a worse room! And the best that can happen is you'll get an upgrade. Give it a go. No harm in trying.

I do think there are some resorts that have more available rooms to upgrade to than others. AKL is a good example, because most of the rooms at the lodge are savanna-view rooms.

This is not a WDW upgrade but.....

On our June '08 visit we were heading back to Delaware  on our last day. We were on a connector thru Charlotte with US Air. A huge thunderstorm blew through the area and needless to say our flight was cancelled.

After about a one hour delay, the wonderful people at the Orlando airport and US Air not only got us on a direct flight back to Philadelphia, they upgraded us to first class.

That was a nice ending to a great vacation.

I have heard this rarely happens and is due to the fact that the studio was not suitable for occupation ie something major needed fixing and no other studios were available.

We had booked standard view room at AKL 11/1-11/5 for my granddaughter's 4th b-day, but when we checked in we were given a savannah view room. Maybe because celebrating a birthday...maybe a little pixie dust...whatever the reason...was a super upgrade.
