View Full Version : 1,000 Points Threshold
DVC Mike
11-07-2008, 07:21 AM
I feel like I have passed some strange threshold today. I added on another 100 points at Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. No big deal. Except… I now am the proud owner of 1,000 DVC points! :cool1:
I’m not so sure why reaching the 1,000 points threshold seems like a big deal to me. I mean, it’s only 100 points more than when I had 900 DVC points yesterday.
In any event, I’m still a happy and very satisfied DVC member who is thrilled that I get to spend so much time at my favorite vacation spot in the world – Walt Disney World – at that I get to stay at my favorite resorts.

Congratulations on your purchase! The fact that you have been a member for a while and have come back to purchase more and more points should give others a bit of confidence in purchasing in this difficult economic period. :thumbsup2

Congratulations on your milestone! It's great that you have the ability and flexibility to use that many points every year. Do you usually take your trips with just you and your wife or do you treat family and friends from time to time? Can't wait to see the pictures you post from your MK view villa at BLT! :thumbsup2

Just the 100 Developer Points and the $5 off.
It's great that you have the ability and flexibility to use that many points every year. Do you usually take your trips with just you and your wife or do you treat family and friends from time to time?
My DW and I have been able to use all our points every year -- just the two of us in a 1-BR. We're hoping with the recent point add-ons to start taking some family and friends along with us.

Wow, almost $5,000 a year in dues.
You beat me to it. While I was thinking of adding on, the thought of the nearly 3 grand I pay in dues keeps me from doing it. So DVCMike, do you have any cure to the effect the maintenance dues bill has on your health? Right now I am lucky I still can use my yearly performance bonus check to pay my dues, but in a couple of years, I'll be doing it monthly. So far it's the only thing holding me back from adding on. We're at 610 now.
Congratulations!!

That is terrific. But I'll be the first and bravest to ask (ok, and nosy)...what is your combined monthly fees? Ours is a mere 69.00/month and don't plan on making it any more than that. So, do you dare tell us?:)

Congratulations on reaching 1000 points! Have a great time with them!
The dues are one thing but how about the $100,000 spent to acquire the points. That is some huge up front vacationing. Not that I talk because we've put in over that between DVC and Marriott. Mike I pray for you that no hurricanes sweep central FLA in the next 40 years.
On the other hand, imagine the fun of 1,000 points. A safari every year? Staying the months of January, May and September in an Animal Kingdom Value Studio every year? (actually 1011 points but close enough) Or how about Costa Rica, a 7 day cruise and 2 weeks in the world every year. Life must be good for you Mike. You inspire me! :worship:

The annual maintenance fees hurt a lot less when you pay them monthly. They are debited from my checking account every month.

I have pondered the cost of DVC and MF for long stays or frequent stays. I think of how much a vacation home would cost, how much we would go etc vs something like accumulating points like DVCMIKE or other TSs for that matter. Realistically what could you get for 100k and 5k for upkeep in a vacation home.....and how much time would you stay there, not to mention being on WDW grounds. You can debate renting out the vacation home and its appreciation etc. But for someone (like me) who likes the KISS principle, 1000 pts and a few other flexible TS options seems to get me a pretty good bang for the buck. convenience comes at a price but I don't think this price is that unreasonable when you weigh getting a vacation home and its upkeep and headaches. I know a few people that own 1/4ly interest in a condo (great location) but it was like 500k plus probably about 12k a year in MF's. Yes there is an appreciation factor (which has been nice) but they still spend significant time arranging things with other owners etc.
For me I would see us accumulating 1-2k in pts over the next many years and spending some retirement time at WDW and a few other places with our other TS. One thing to note with a vacation home is you go to the same place (this could be good or bad). I know many will bring up possible investment opportunity etc but I'm looking at bang for buck with KISS principle. Who knows what the future will hold with any TS but this is just my 2 cents:teacher:

I know that there are a few other people here who own over a thousand points. I say more power to you!:thumbsup2
Our problem isn't so much the points these days as the cost of airfare from NJ. But that's not going to stop me from adding on in the future.

Wow and congrats! We own 450 points so we still have a long way to go...but now I have something to shoot for. We looked a long time at buying a beach house in South Carolina and found that owning at Disney was much more affordable and made more sense. I know what we put out in DVC sounds like alot of money but when you do the research of what it costs to own a vacation home somewhere (especially on the beach where the insurance is through the roof and assocaition fees are higher then our maint. fees) it really isnt that bad.

That's great DVCMike, more power to you. We bought our first contract exactly 11 months ago (165 AKV) soon after we added another 160 (AKV) within 2 months of that we bought 200 BCV resale and most recently purchased 210 BLT points the day in went on sale (DH B-day). I suppose you can peg us for having serious addonitis. We are up to 735 pts and not stopping quite yet. We have the pleasure of hosting 17 people this March for a family reunion, otherwise we are simply a family of 5. :thumbsup2

Hey Mike,
We are from North Carolina too and are looking into our first DVC purchase. Can you give me a general idea of how you allocate your points over the year? Do you do several long trips or multiple short ones? Do you ever take a spur of the moment long weekend trip? If so, is it hard to get DVC locations for short notice trips? We would probably drive most of the time, I imagine you do as well. About 8-9 hours for us.

WOW! $1,000! Is there a limit DVC puts on the amount of points you can own? My DH has asked me if we could get a "kabillion" points and just stay almost as long as we wanted! It gets harder and harder to come home. As we got closer to the end of our vacation he constantly was asking "come on, we can stay another week". We just got home last Sunday night after a 10 day stay at BCV and I had already booked for May before I left home at VWL. While on the bus heading to MK I was on the phone with member services for the 7 month window to switch to BW (I was able to get in - YEA!) I have many times been tempted to add to my points -I have 380. Maybe on the next incentive I'll give in to temptation.

11-08-2008, 07:56 AM
There are limits. I do not think DVC wants you in the same room for a full year, and they do not want rental corporations to permanently own blocks of rooms.
I think it is something like 2000 per resort, 5000 total per contract, but there are ways to have more, like one contract for each spouse plus one for the couple, and if you owned any companies...
DVC Mike
11-08-2008, 08:33 AM
How in the world do you get enough time off to use 1000 points? How do you pay for the transportation? Seriously, give me your secret.
Since we stay in a 1-BR and stay on the weekends, the points don't go as far as if we stayed in a Studio and only Sun-Thu. We got spoiled by the space in the 1-BR, the king-sized bed, whirlpool tub, etc. Even though it's just my DW and I, we rarely book a Studio.
As for transportation -- we drive.
I have this feeling that you may be joining the 1,000 point club sooner than you think.

We never do a spur of the moment trip. Each trip is booked exactly 11 months in advance. We typically take 4 trips a year, with each trip being at least 8 nights, but our last trip was 10 nights and our next trip is 12 nights. We drive, as it's only 8.5 hours and we hate the hassle of airports. Plus, we can bring down everything we need without requiring an Owner's Locker.

As you can tell from the resorts I own at, I prefer the DVC resorts attached to the "deluxe" resorts rather than the "condo" style resorts (OKW, SSR). That's just my personal preference.

1,000 sounds pretty good!
Except for in Jan when the dues come around.
If I had that many I would probably stay in GV a lot more at this point in my life -- more so than increase # of trips. And invite extended family to visit with us more often.
Then I would spend more time in 1BR with DW after the kids leave home. It would be hard for me to stay in studios. DVC really has me spoiled.
If and when we sell our condo -- which we will probably do some day down the road -- I plan on putting some of that money into DVC points.:wizard:

Just added 160 at BLT, and will need to up that to 250 some time if I want to make the 12 days easy (vice bank / borrow every 3rd year). Might as well add 95 at that time and make the 1K club :-).
