(Curtain slowly rises)

The Cast:

:groom: , Disney fan, created by DW. Keeper of notes, receipts, and the "Master File"

:bride: , she who is my wife. Alway curious, especially when presented with a new path.

pluto: , Max. A recent addition to the cast (5/08). A retired racing greyhound. Over 130 races. Loves to be loved. Now, only runs when he wants to.

DGM & DGF: My parents. Entrusted with caring for our little cherub while we're away. (I think the 3 of them had as much fun as we did). Max intently watched them leave this morning.

Booked this cruise the first week of 2/07. We'd already made plans for the 2007 Halloween cruise, but couldn't resist the thought of 2 stops at CC. Normally, we've sailed in room 5632, a cat 7. For this cruise, we decided to try a cat 6 on deck 6: 6624.

Now, those 2 stops would really come in handy after the 2007 cruise: our CC day was ruined by Noel, and we were diverted to Nassau. That had its own positives (seeing the crew so happy) and negatives (it in no way resembles CC). We were so glad we'd booked this double dip.

Over the course of the next 18+ months, we met so many nice DISers over on the Halloween on the High Seas cruise meets thread. To attempt to name them all would run the risk of forgetting someone (due to my meds- I've returned home with quite a nice head cold). AGreyGirl even set up a web site for us, complete with chat forum. Regular chat nights were Thursday and Saturday, with Mondays added later (along with any time folks just wanted to stop by). Some of our 2007 cruise friends were rebooked for this cruise, also. Many changed their plans, as things can (and do) come up. In the end, JNS and 101DalmationFan were the only returnees with us.

As I mentioned before, I returned home with a head cold. I believe it started last Wednesday (on the cruise). It did effect our experience somewhat, but we still had a great time. The sensations in my head as we took off from MCO were quite weird. As a result, I can't guarantee that I'll be super fast in getting this completed. I'll try.

Added bonus: got a call Saturday am as we pulled into PC from DGF- no hot water at home. Kept lighting the burner with a butane BBQ lighter until today, then called the plumber. Now, it appears to be fixed.

We booked our flights out of BWI with Southwest. The prices are too good to ignore, and there are about 9 non-stops a day to MCO.

For parking, once again used Airport FastPark. $6.40 a day with coupon, or if a member of the frequent parker club. We fly about once a year, but all you have to do to join the frequent club is park 1 day a year there, so it works for us. After 7 (I think) paid days, you can redeem for 1 day free, which we did this year.

Upon arrival at BWI, we noticed that the security lines snaked fairly far up the concourse. This meant no use of the restrooms for me, as we had no idea how long the lines would take. Southwest check-in was a breeze, and we were now at the end of the security line. I must say, it moved quite fast. DW timed us at just over 15 minutes from joining the line to being cleared by security. Much faster than I expected, given how long the lines looked.

Our plan, given our 16:15 flight time, was to eat dinner at BWI. But, still full of sushi from lunch, we decided upon a strawberry smoothie instead. This change in plans would later be a decision we would regret. <cue dramatic music>

Now, I like to know things. Like: our equipment (plane) was due in from Hartford about 40 minutes prior to our departure. I'd checked a few days before, and felt I knew what gates we'd be at for both BWI and MCO. Checked the Hartford forecast that morning, to see if it would effect us. On our way out to the gate, I noticed a flight info board. Here, I noticed that the Hartford flight would be arriving a few minutes late. No problems...yet.

Each time I went to stretch my legs, I'd check one of those boards. Once, the delay in arrival changed during the time it took me to use the restroom. If I hadn't washed my hands for 30 seconds... It was apparent that Southwest would attempt to use the time between arrival and our departure as a buffer to make up time. If the Hartford flight was 45 minutes late, we were now 30 minutes late.

I think it was around 3:45pm that Southwest announced that our flight would be delayed until 4:55. Problem was (and they made note of), at 4:55, there was still no Hartford flight at the gate. In the end, it was around 5:50 before we were getting pushed back from the gate. We arrived at MCO after 8pm. And, we'd had no dinner (told you we'd regret that decision). Snagged our bags at baggage claim, and were glad we'd decided to stay at the Hyatt in the Orlando airport. (in past cruise years, we'd stayed at AKL the night before the cruise).

Lessons learned:
1. this was the first time we'd intentionally flown late in the day in a while. DW had to work half a day on Friday. Next time, I see us both taking that Friday off.
2. there are a number of business travelers on a late afternoon Friday Southwest flight, even to Orlando. I checked us in seconds after 24 hours out. We were numbers A-49 and A-50.
3. they pretty much roll up the sidewalks at MCO after 8pm. Never seen it so empty. This will be described further post, likely title, "PaDC's quest for food".

So, Max left for upstate NY with DGM and DGF. He watched intently as each took their turns at the rest stop. And, he went right in the front door when they arrived at their home. Chris and I were worried that Max wouldn't eat, or sulk, not be himself because he missed us. Upon arriving at our hotel room (around 8:40), we found a message from them on my phone. So, I called them, and we found out that he ate his entire dinner of 1.5 cups food, fish oil capsule, peas/carrots, and vanilla yogurt in under 2 minutes. Yep, he was really missing us- normally, he's done in just over a minute! Poor little thing just wasn't himself at all. :lmao:
We talked with them Saturday morning, after brunch. Max had given them a bit of a show already that morning. Dad said he was walking around the back yard with Max when suddenly: ZOOM! Max just took off running at/near top speed around the back yard. Zig-zag. Buzz the tower, full stop. And then it was over. This is something we call "crazy running" when we see it at home. Further proof that he was perfectly comfortable and at-ease.

Denise,
Yes, seeing that some had a different experience than we felt we did. Later, we'll compare/contrast this year's Halloween 7 night cruise with last years.

For our 2 other cruises, we stayed at AKL the night before. With our planned late arrival (which became a much later arrival), we chose the MCO Hyatt instead this year. I booked us at the AAA promo rate, and didn't try the Priceline/Hotwire game. I'd love to get one of those really low prices, but just didn't feel lucky enough to try.

Check-in: We didn't use the bellman getting our luggage service, since we knew we'd recognize our bags right away. It was a short trek from baggage pickup to the elevator. Take the elevator (or escalator) up from the main terminal level to the check-in area at the Hyatt. A very helpful bellman met us as we exited the elevator, and placed our luggage onto a cart. Correctly deducing that we were on a DCL cruise (DW's Disney shirt and our arrival time probably gave it away), he directed us to the self-checkin kiosk, as the one desk worker was busy. Self-checkin was easy and efficient. Next, he guided us to our room, #8021. They're doing some renovating in that section, so with the new carpet we also had some signs of construction. Our room overlooked what appeared to be the dropoff zone for departing passengers. There were runways and terminals to our left and right. I returned the call to my parents, and then called suziemva, one of our DIS friends. There were plans for a mini-meet that evening, but it was now pushing 9pm, and we still hadn't eaten dinner. Suzie reported how everyone was there, but all had flight issues that day, and were turning in instead of meeting.

We went back down to the airport concourse, to find them pretty much rolling up the sidewalks. I mean it: all the stores were closed/closing. In the food court, only McD's, Sbarro, and I think one other place were open. We walked by Macaroni Grill, to find that they also closed at 9. So, to Mickey D's we went. We shared a small french fry, I got a milk, and Christine got some sort of soda. It was enough to take the edge off to sleep. We thought about the Hyatt restaurants, but didn't want to spend a lot of time eating. We thought more options would still be open on the concourse.

Saturday morning came quickly, and Christine commented on how quiet the room was, "if I didn't know that we were in an airport, I wouldn't be able to guess it. This room is so quiet." In need of sustinence, we decided to try one of the Hyatt restaurants: Hemisphere.

But first, we'd received the bill under the door in the night. I didn't know what checkout involved, so I telephoned the desk. They provided excellent customer service, walking me through the video checkout process. Never done that before. Also, at this time, I'd like to mention that the room was rather spacious (at least the size of a room at BC or AKL), clean, and functional. The AC did come on with a loud "click", which could rouse a light sleeper.

Now, back to food. You can order off the menu at Hemisphere for breakfast, or get the buffet. We figured we'd see our share of buffets on the Magic, so we ordered off the menu. Christine had French toast, with, I believe, orange zest. I had scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, and redskin potatoes. It came with a tomato and some asparagus. It was a quick and tasty breakfast. I did find the OJ to be a bit on the pulpy side, though.

We used Happy Limo for our transfers. Just take the Hyatt elevators to level 1, and go straight out to valet parking. Robert showed up with a Lincoln at 10am, as requested, and we were on our way to the port.

We'd do the Hyatt again. It was a nice place to stay, and with our flight delays, better than having to get somewhere from the airport after our arrival.

They provided good service, as mentioned: the bellman at checkin, and the front desk by phone at checkout.

Even not knowing where valet parking was, it was very easy to get to. Nothing to be stressed about.

The trip to the port was no problem. We did pass through some heavy showers, but Robert slowed down for safety. He didn't have another pickup for hours, and we felt no need to push the pace. Just a nice ride to the port.

Christine met a fellow NJ cast member at the outside checkin. They had a pleasant talk for a few minutes, then we headed to the terminal. We fell into the security line directly behind Newfie Mom. As we got introduced, someone ahead in the line heard us discussing the DIS, and called to us, "I just found the DIS and your thread about a week ago, and read the whole thing. Thank you all, its been very helpful". Now through security, we struggled to contain ourselves as we climbed the stairs to the main concourse. At the top, we took a track to the left, and were presented with checkin boarding number 8. I think last year we were a 5, but we were there, and the ship wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. The wait in the checkin line was short, and our checkin cast member was very efficient. I suppose it helped that I pulled out the fabled Master File, and immediately whipped out all the appropriately signed paperwork. He then scanned our passports, and presented us with our KTTW and CC lanyards. I'm not kidding when I say that our entire experience with him lasted 3 minutes, 4 tops. As a point of reference: last year's CM was, I believe, earning their ears. And, the KTTW machine at their station wasn't working correctly. First the wrong names, then double printing.

With just under an hour to kill, we looked for a place to sit. The terminal was already quite crowded. One reason for this was the fact that it had started to rain. This issue would effect things slightly for us later in the day. We established base camp over in the last row of seats by the restrooms. I don't know why I didn't look right away (probably due to the efficiency), but suddenly I thought to look at my KTTW for the dining rotation. It was, PLLAAPL. Doing some quick projecting, and a check of the Master File, and I deduced that we might be in Animators for the show night when our Palo dinner was. This was our 3rd cruise, and we'd yet to see the Animators show dinner. There was some sadness at this possibility, but we were willing to roll with it.

DW next directed me to venture forth, and find DIS friends, which I did. LovableGluttons, HelenSB, TotallyAngelic, Disney4Dana, Suziemva, and more. Dana and her family were handing out the group lanyards and name cards that some had purchased. It had a nice copy of the DISers cruise logo on it, with the DIS screen name, and actual person's name. We didn't go in on them, and regretted it. 1- real nice job of workmanship 2- the plastic card holder seemed more durable than the one DCL provided for our KTTW. I returned to Chris, and reported on my recon work. We used the facilities one last time, and set out together to meet all the DISers we could. DW suddenly began to tug on my shirt, "Look! Minnie Mouse is out for photos!" Over to that line we went, listening as more boarding groups were called. They were up to group 6 by the time we had our photo taken.

Soon, they were up to group 8, and it was our time. We skipped the embarkation photo again this year, due to scoring a Minnie photo moments before. This allowed us to pass dozens of people and get on board (to food!). They took our names, and what DCL cruise this was for us (#3), and then we were announced. I wondered that day, what must it be like for Inkkognito when she and her husband board..."On their 50+ DCL cruise!" Must bring things to a screetching halt in the deck 3 atrium.

Next up: eating, exploring, "is all this for us?", and the DIS meet.

Sean - it was great to meet you and Christine in the lineup - you were my first face-to-face disser! The t-shirts and lanyards were a great help connecting us all - the kids and even hubby got into the act -"look - there's another one of us!" as they spied the lanyards or shirts. Lots of people throughout the cruise asked me about either - I was very proud to explain about our group! And to have that lady comment about our thread - didn't know we were famous! :cool1:

Despite my best intentions, our carryon bags weighed a ton again - and the terminal was PACKED! (Gotta love the rain that kept appearing throughout the week :umbrella: ) so we ended up sitting on the floor by the wall. Lucky you got seats!

Can't wait to read more!

Hi Sean & Christine

Love your title....very cute. I also love how we always think our dogs are going to miss us & they have a great time at the grandparents. Our Bella is the same way. Resilient things that what they are.

Great start here & I cannot wait to hear about all that I missed this year. I was thinking about all you lucky Halloween cruisers all week & wishing we were there again.

Seeing some negative posts about this cruise.......:confused3 Glad it sounds like you had a different experience.

Thanks to all for the replies. It is nice to hear from friends old, and new. I'll try to get another installment up soon, but continue to fight this darned cold. Currently, I can breathe, which is always nice. Just got this persistent tickle and lump in my throat. That, and I've been told at work that they like my new, deeper, voice.

After boarding, we proceeded directly to our traditional first stop on the ship: Parrot Cay. I think the reason is because we were directed there on our first cruise in 2005, and sometimes, we enjoy tradition. You'll recall that earlier, I mentioned the liquid sunshine currently being experienced in the PC area. This, of course effected lunching. The vast majority of the cruisers headed to Parrot Cay, just like us. The dining room was rather packed, and they stopped seating more with the group right before us. So, we waited about 10 minutes to get a table.

I believe our server for lunch was Toby, from Austraila. Very nice gentleman, and we saw him again several times during the cruise. We each enjoyed a tall glass of milk with our lunch. I was the first to join the herd, erh- line. Thought I'd scored big when I got to go down the left side of the buffet (a trick we've heard: when presented with a choice, go left- ours is a right-handed society). But, I would be wrong in this assumption. This is because I got freight trained by a family of 6-8, who decided to not wait in line like everyone else. Instead, they would leap-frog to gaps in the line, take what they wanted at that point, and hop again. This served to slow down everyone not participitating in this buffet game of Frogger. And, just like that video game of so long ago, Frogger doesn't always win...

Now, I want you to understand: I'm not mad at this point. Its vacation. I can't control how polite others are, only how I act and how I feel. I choose to enjoy my time off from work. So, someone had the misfortune to jump ahead of me as I approached the peel and eat shrimp station. This is not wise, as yours truly really lives for his shrimp. You see, the way the line was configured, the cocktail sauce was before the shrimp. <cue dramatic music> Frogger plants at the shrimp station, oblivious to the truck coming his way... I happen to note a conspicuous lack of cocktail sauce in the bowl on our side of the buffet. Remember where the sauce is. I start scraping all the little trails from the sides of the bowl down into the center. Taking great care to get it all. I like my cocktail sauce, I really do, but in reality there wasn't much left for me to gather. Frogger now turns- he's looking for something. What could it be? Frogger is now staring blankly down into the empty bowl of cocktail sauce. I'll just pop around here and plant in front of the shrimps, gather a few up, and be on my way thankyouverymuch. Last I saw Frogger, he was looking for a Cast Member, and waiting. By the time I return to the table, DW is ready to send out a search party. "But I saw you got to go down the left side of the line?" she asks. "I'll tell you a story later," was my response.

-surely the laundry must be ready for the dryer-

To be continued...

Our next stop was the Vista Spa and Salon. We had a Spa Villa reservation for Cozumel day, and we wanted to scout what it looked like. Also, as part of the Romantic Escape at Sea (REAS) package, we had length of cruise passes to the Tropical Rainforest Room. During our tour, we met Peter, one of the Fitness Instructors. Peter is about 68", all muscle, flexible, and extremely energetic. DW wasn't enamored with the instructors on last Halloween's cruise, and didn't want to book anything like personal training until she had the chance to meet this years team. Does Peter try to sell all the various products and services of the Spa- yes. I'm sure it is one of his duties. But, does Peter interact with the guests, enjoy what he does, and take an interest in the guests? Once again, yes. These positive attributes far outweigh any sales pitch that happens, in our opinions. I knew that this wouldn't be our only interaction with him.

It was now after 1:30. Time to meet our room! On both previous cruises, we'd been in 5632, a category 7. For this one, we decided to try a category 6. Room 6624 was to be our home away from home for the next week. We opened the door, and were immediately struck by sunlight. There is so much more light that comes into the stateroom from the cat 6 verandah versus the cat 7. And the bountiful harvest of booty to be found all throughout the stateroom! One of the first tasks of mine was to make sure it was all ours. Last year, someone elses excursion tickets found their way into our room, which I corrected. We did find a card for another room in our hallway that mentioned a $200 stateroom credit being on account already. I quickly got that into the fish outside the correct room.

Now, back to OUR booty:
Memory box with nautical theme from our TA: All Seasons Travel
2 White chocolate champagne flutes with chocolates inside them (REAS)
Bottle of Korbel Brut Champagne in a metal ice bucket. (REAS? The card didn't mention it, just said it was from DCL). I'd say 1 liter size.
2 White DCL robes with silver DCL logo embroidered on them (REAS)
Black soft-sided ice bucket with silver DCL logo embroidered on it
Excursion tickets
REAS letter with 8x10 free photo coupon from Shutters
REAS Romantic breakfast in bed selection card

The Castaway Club gift: CC logo on everything
Red mesh backpack-style bag
Writing pad with pen
Black and red tote bag holding everything. We both feel its nicer than the bag used last year
2 water bottles

CC gift evaluation:
The water bottles seemed to be of poor quality. And, we've got dozens at home already. I pried the foam koozie-like outer wrappers off, and we brought them home. Threw out the bottles. The red mesh backpack started to break our first day at CC. One of the grommets at the bottom pulled right out of the bag. We continued to use it until the last day, then threw it out. I should note that we didn't use the bag last year at all.

As we explored all this, and the room, our bags began to arrive. We commented how funny it was that they arrived over a 1 hour period at the room, when they all went into the same bin at the curb earlier that morning. But, the pace of delivery did give us a chance to open each as it arrived, and process things into the room drawers.

By now, it was almost 3pm: time for the DIS meet. This year, the group chose to meet in the Promenade Lounge on deck 3. Last year, we met at the Goofy pool. With NO offense to our 2007 group, we liked this location better. Why? Glad you asked. For starters- the intermittent rain of the day. The fact that we knew that everybody hanging out there was a DISer. Let's face it: Goofy Pool is a very public place. It became hard to tell who was with the group, and who wasn't. And, in 2007, it resulted in people starting to gravitate away from the group before you could meet them. This year's location gave a real sense of just how large our group was. We met so many DISers at the meet, and yet there were so many more we didn't get to. Before we knew it, Brent was announcing the muster stations drill, and it was time to go.

Attracted to our surprise Korbel, we decided to take in our departure from our verandah. I safely launched the cork into the shub, and the pouring began. The second thing we noticed about the verandah (after the sunshine) was the size. Or, our perception of it. I think the Passporter states that the deck 6 verandahs are about 6 inches deeper than those on deck 5. Ours didn't just seem deeper, it seemed much wider. We were already thinking of spurning cat 7 in the future for cat 6.

I must go now. Laundry, and Max needs some exercise. He's on his side right now, just behind me. I know the minute I get up, he'll be up. Until the next chapter, "Dinner with non-DISers"

Mom to Joey the Greyhound-Foster Mom to Red,Rodney,Dixie,Thistle,Flute,Princess and Farmer

Thank you. Max has been a wonderful addition to our family In fact, we just got back from our morning family walk. As part of our TR, I intend to continue to describe the adventures of Max, while we were on our cruise.

We first met Keystone Greyhounds at some of the Hershey Bears hockey games we attended last year. I recall looking at the promo list for the year at the start of last season, "Hey Chris, says that there will be greyhounds at some of our games" Our first game there, they had 6-8 dogs, and about 10 photos and descriptions of current fosters. We were struck by how nonchalant the dogs were about the whole crowd thing. After talking to the reps for over 40 minutes, we brought home some leaflets. Next thing you know, DW wants to not throw out the info sheets during January cleaning. By 1 month into her new telecommuting job, she said she was ready for a friend. Application was sent in after the 2nd game we saw them at in February. Met a foster at the March game, just wasn't our type. By early April, we were informed that they thought they had the right hound for our home. My co-worders threw me a doggie shower. Max arrived here 5/3.

Loved the frogger story.......good for you for being patient & getting all the cocktail sauce.:thumbsup2
I think you are right, our meet at the Goofy pool should have taken place elsewhere. All our Disers weren't even in the group picture.
Ready to hear about dinner with non-disers. popcorn::

Brilliant installments Sean! We were turned away from Parrot Cay on that first lunch time as it was too busy - but we ended up having a lovely lunch outside at Topsiders just as the rain cleared - they were wiping all the rain water off the chairs so that we could sit down.

We sneaked a peek inside the verandah staterooms on deck 6, and were surprised at how big, airy and light they seemed in comparison to our inside stateroom on deck 6 - and now we hope to book a deck 6 verandah stateroom for our next cruise after seeing how nice they looked.

Hope you will soon be feeling better and I look forward to your next installment!

Feeling much better now. That pesky tickle still in the throat sometimes. Where were we? Ahh, yes: Dinner

I posted earlier what we thought our dining rotation was to be, based upon the codes on our KTTW. As part of my job, I was to make sure all was in order with tickets, gifts, etc. upon entering the stateroom. I didn't get around to looking at the dining tickets right away, but when I did: Wow. "Umm, honey? The dining tickets don't match our KTTW?!" "What do we do?" was the reply. We, actually me, would be going down to Guest Services, to inquire as to what the heck was going on? When I showed the kind staff member my problem, they instructed me to follow the tickets, not our KTTW. I recall mumbling something about, "Gee, I hope this wasn't some sort of global system error," as I walked back to the room. <it was> We mentioned the topic to almost every DISer we encountered at the 3pm meet. Some had already noticed, and knew. Others didn't. I became slightly concerned about the chaos potential for dinner that night. I really think DCL should have made an announcement acknowledging the issue, and telling everyone to look at their tickets. I'm not aware that they made a specific announcement on the topic.

Dinner
Main (first) seating
table 62
Head Server: Yolande
Server: Mizar
Assistant Server: Sebastian
Table size: 8

A family of 3 (DD, DM, and DDaughter) were already seated when we arrived at Animators (we finally got the Animators show). I spotted the empty high chair right away. Then came 2 women (Grandma, Mom) and a young boy. There is no doubt, this young lad will one day become a Hall of Fame pitcher. Or, Olympic javelin thrower. For 18 months old, he had super baby strength. First thing, he grabbed the tablecloth, and pulled. Darn near got the whole thing off, like a magic trick. We regrouped, and smoothed things out, but I spent most of the meal with one hand in a vise grip position, trying to keep hole of the tablecloth. Next, items began to land at my place. I remember the crayon the most. Taking quick inventory of my options, I placed one of the bread baskets directly in front of me, as a defensive shield. I made sure to keep it there for the rest of the meal.

The young lad then transferred to Grandma's lap, directly in the line of fire -oops- across from, Christine. I heard a loud <clank> as the fork landed on her bread plate. I didn't give it too much thought, and we sort of laughed it off. I later found out what I suspect none of us knew/saw: it only landed on the bread plate AFTER it bounced of Christine's forehead! Fortunately, she said, it didn't hit tines first. Unfortunately, this wouldn't be Chris' only encounter with wayward cutlery on this cruise, the staff would later get into the act. What did we eat? Not surprisingly, I don't recall exactly. I had the pasta with alfredo sauce entree. I believe some very dried prosciutto. It was just above room temp. I didn't send it back, as I was just plain hungry.

At this point, some of you might be thinking: DINKS, and they hate kids. No, we don't hate them. Not even this one. They'd flown from Australia to Florida for this cruise, with a stop in LA. Little guy's clock must've been all out of whack. Being at the end of the table, under almost constant assault, and me having basically no interaction with the family of 3 the first night: did we actually have discussions in our room about changing our table? I'll be honest: yes, we did. But, we didn't change. Why? First, our sample size was too small, n=1. It was only the first meal. Everybody needs a chance to get to know one another, and interact. Not all have chatted on the DIS for a year or more. Second: the lad needed some sleep.

The Animators Show:
Just didn't do it for us. Perhaps we were tired ourselves. Or, the struggles at the table effected our perception. One thing: that dining room is LOUD! And, that took away from us being able to hear the music, until the very end. Good music well matched is like sauce with a meal item: it makes it better, and brings out all sorts of good things.

We toured the shops and Shutters before retiring for the evening. We need a good night's sleep, as we get CC, and stingrays, tomorrow!

Great update Sean - sorry to hear your first dining experience was not great. I sure hope that young lad calmed down a bit on subsequent nights. DH and I had some teething problems with our table mates on our last cruise and we had those same in-cabin discussions. However, we stuck it out for many of the same reasons as you.

Keep the reports coming - glad you're feeling a little better now.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh:headache: sounds like dinner was not so good. Hope it got better. Eric & I discussed several times before last years cruise what we would do if sat with a disruptive child & I am not sure we could have been as amiable as you guys. We were luckily sat with 3 other couples so it worked out great for us. We love kids too, but having none prefer to eat with other adults. :rolleyes1
Can't wait to hear about CC & be jealous of your time there since Noel cheated us out of it last year. Glad you got 2 trips this year to make up for last year.:thumbsup2

Hey Sean!

(give Christine {and Max} my well wishes too!)

So glad you are doing a TR. I have considered it but I think I am having more fun reading everyone's!

We had a magnificent time on this cruise and was bummed to find out that others did not. I cannot think of anything (short of weather and DCL cannot control that) that I feel the need to complain about. Everything was wonderful!

Cannot wait to read more!

Hope you are feeling better!

Looking forward to next installment!!
And sounds like Max did rather well for himself. I'm sure he enjoyed that much better than a kennel:)

Noooooo! It's our fault for not coordinating dining with DISers. And, the story will take a turn for the better. I know: book yourselves on the 10/23/2010 Eastern, and link dining. We promise to behave ourselves. We're already talking with other DISers about linking then.

Max did so well. There will be entire posts devoted to his time with my parents. We're not the only ones to have a good time during the cruise. Mom and Dad have decreed that they will make every effort to stay with him whenever we go away.

I'll keep the background brief: not once in our 2 prior cruises with DCL have we been able to have an entire day at CC. On the Halloween 2007 Eastern, we didn't even get to the island. Hello, Nassau. Rats!

10/26/08
Position: Castaway Cay
Orientation: backed in
Excitement level: high
Excursion of the day: Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure

We got off the ship, collected far too many towels for just 2 persons, and set off on foot to enjoy day 1 of 2 at CC. After pausing for a few photos, we eventually made our way to Palm Central, where shopping ensued. I purchased a Hawaiian-style Disney shirt, which I joyfully found to be 50% off when they rang it up. DW got a cute little red plastic pail, to organize her bathroom items (she got the shub room, I established base camp in the latrine). She also got a white t-shirt with the gulls from Nemo on it, with MINE! on the front, in bedazzled green sparkles. Everyone seemed to be at a reasonable pace, possibly due to the 2nd stop later in the cruise. We headed over to the far end of the family beach, where there were about 20 chairs for each person. Score #2 of the day: we found an unoccupied/unclaimed hammock. Somewhere, Mickey has a nice video of us eventually summiting the hammock, where we laid in bliss for about 30-40 minutes. It was cloudy, with winds strong enough to cancel all of the non-Disney run excursions. The locals couldn't boat over to CC, seas were too rough, we were told. But, it was in the mid-70's, and we were on vacation, in a hammock, on CC.

Soon, it was time to go find Ray. First, we took a leisurely stroll out to the Heads Up Bar, just to look around. Then, we headed over to Ray's. The LovableGluttons were just finishing their 10am excursion, and we were able to obtain a good scouting report from them. Upon checking in, we obtained our masks, snorkels, and float vests. I'll admit, I needed help figuring out how to inflate the darned thing. You push down on the tube, then blow. I thought you unscrewed (opened) the tube, then blew. Gluttons to the rescue, keeping me from staying on CC forever. We found the 15-20 minute educational session interesting. Vets from AK had recently been out, and given each of the 54 rays their physicals. Barbs were freshly trimmed. We were also educated about their food: shrimp, squid, and ray jello. I expect to see ray jello as a healthy choice option soon on the dining plan. They all have chips on their left, dorsal side, that can be used to id them. But, the full time keepers appeared to know each one on sight.

Now, it was our turn to swim with stingrays.

Sorry about the hanging chad. Max was in need of some outside time, the mail arrived, and there was chicken to marinade.

Location: Castaway Rays Lagoon
Time: about 11:20

As you proceed to the water's edge, you're directed to one of 4 feeding stations. We were sent to #4, the one farthest from the education shack. The feeding stations have some bouyancy, neither resting on the bottom or floating totally above the surface. Our CM, we found out, was the 2nd in command of Ray's. She was very educational, staying in the water (shin deep) for several minutes after feeding time was over to answer our questions, which we appreciated. I think there were about 8 at each station. The rays enter the station loop from the left, something that the staff wishes to keep them trained to do. In on the left, feed, keep moving, out on the right. We met the largest ray: Megatron, weight 94#, Big Momma (famous from the Travel Channel show) 64#, Thing 1, Thing 2, and several others. Each guest at the station had the chance to feed 3-4 times. While the rays are cycling through the feeding station, other rays are cycling around you, as you stand in the water. They'll lightly rub you, as they pass by. We found the leading edges of the rays to be very soft, as well as the edges of their tops. Harder, bony like structure as you moved more towards the center of their top. They have no teeth, but we were advised to let go of our food as soon as they started the suction, lest one become more aggressive in taking the food. I did get to feel the plates (no teeth) of a ray on my second feeding pass. Turns out, it was a small female, who had a history of grabbing her food, no matter how quickly you let go. No bruise, no cut, just a different sensation on the top of my trigger finger.

After feeding, we had the opportunity to snorkel with the rays. To avoid surprises, one is advised to do the Ray's shuffle when walking in the lagoon. It is rather shallow in many areas, but no surprises here. We were told that they move out from the shore once the feeding stations are removed from the water, but didn't find too many out there. Back to the shallows we went, where we encountered many rays. Christine went in search of them, but not in a chasing way. I tried a different approach: standing in one spot. Both worked from time to time. I had several come very close to me. Noon was fast approaching, and it was all over.

After turning in our gear, we headed to the Serenity Bay tram stop, where we ran into PraiseHisName, a fellow DISer (love those orange lanyards). A brief tram ride later, we were, for the first time ever, at Serenity Bay. Lunch was well under way, and the crowds at the food station were light. I had a cheeseburger, some BBQ chicken, and coleslaw. DW enjoyed some chicken and BBQ ribs. While I don't recall here desert selection, I had soft serve chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Boy, that stuff comes out of the machine slowly.

Hunger defeated, we walked onto the beach. It was so quiet. And, it stretches for quite a distance. We walked, I'd say, about 2/3 down, and selected some lounge chairs under an umbrella. From our vantage point, we thought we saw some DISers getting into the water, but they were too far away to be sure. After about 20 minutes in the sun, we got in, too. Both of us had spotted dark clouds in the distance, and were trying to make sense of their direction of travel. Not taking chances, we began our return trek to the ship. Later that same day...we arrived at the Magic. They were only using the aft gangway, and the line grew to a few hundred very quickly. And, the dark clouds grew closer. Finally, as we got on the gangway, they opened the front one too. Saw lots of folks getting their exercise as they sprinted to the forward gangway, with the short line. Back on board, we declared that we'd had a CC day, and prepared for dinner.

I hope Sean does not mind me "hijacking" his TR. I see he has gotten away from stating "lessons learned".

1. Ok, I'll take the blame for the towels. I didn't realize that each person is handed 2 towels when debarking at CC and I grabbed one more. 2 is enough. I think I lost one (unintentionally) while on CC.

2. We should have booked the earlier Sting Ray encounter. An earlier time slot would probably still allow enough time to shop (very important). Even though we enjoyed relaxing in the hammock, it just seemed like we were killing time till our appointment with the stingrays.

3. I have not discussed this w/Sean, so this is my own opinion, for now. I didn't think Serenity Bay offered much of an advantage over the other beaches. One disadvantage is that there does not seem to be much depth to the water. I like to get in the water, swim around, float, etc. At serenity bay, you need to walk far out to get into water deeper than 2-3 feet, whereas at the family beach, there is more of a drop-off into chest-deep water. In 2005, during our brief stay at CC, we swam at the far end of the family beach, which was not very crowded.

I know that #3 makes it sound like I did not enjoy the day, but that is not the case. It was a great day, and I would consider booking the Stingray excursion again. I definitely recommend doing this excursion! :woohoo:

Dinner Sunday was in Parrot Cay, which has developed into our favorite dining room on the ship. I think perhaps because it was where we were directed to eat lunch on our very first cruise. To us, it doesn't seem as cold as AP, or as formal as Lumiere's (where I almost feel like I should dress better just to eat lunch).

I'm sorry, for our lack of detailed menu selections. I do know that we enjoyed this dinner. I had the fritters appetizer, and recall it well. I even tried to get it again later in the cruise. (Found out you can't do that on a night when all galleys are preparing from the same menu, like Golden Mickey's). I should note here that we were smart not to change dining based upon one experience. The exact seating arrangements were slightly different this night, and things went much better. We'd turned a corner, and despite some child issues on other nights, looked forward to finding out what our tablemates did each day. This evening, we learned how the husband/wife family of 3 took underwater digital photos. Bill explained to me that they have an Olympus digital that is waterproof to, I think, around 30 feet. He promised to bring it to a later dinner, to show us.

We skipped the show, keeping our streak intact, and headed to Shutters. Here, we began our search for our photos. We hadn't had many taken, but could only find 1 or 2. Surely, more would show up later, we said, and headed off to bed.

Monday. Day at Sea.
Monday began with a trip to Goofy's Galley. I renewed my friendship with the cherry lattice. :cloud9: Allow me to bask in that memory for a little bit.

Cherry lattice is just a basic pastry with cherry filling and icing. (just one of those simple thinks that make Sean happy) :) They cut it into pieces measuring approximately one inch wide by five inches long. We have only ever seen them at Goofy's Galley. We tried to order them one day from room service and the lady had no idea what it was. We go to Goofy's in the AM before the fitness center. Sean gets Cherry lattice and milk and I get the yogurt with fruit & granola and also some pieces of melon.

I'm going to jump away from the tale of :bride: and I for a moment, and to the tale of Max, Mom, and Dad. Dogs have been a part of our family since I was born. Our lab mix crossed the rainbow bridge in, I think, 1995. Not too long after I graduated from college, and moved to Pa from NY. They've met Max several times over the summer, and absolutely love him.

When Mom and Dad asked what we'd do with Max during the cruise, I told them that we were researching kennels here. A co-worker I fully trust shared her experiences with a promising one. A few days after I told them this, Mom and Dad volunteered to host Max while we were away. They'd devised a plan to use some vacation days for Dad at work, and come get him. Then, they'd return to upstate NY. Well, Dad is now enjoying the benefits of retirement, thanks to the economy. (at this point, I shall refrain from expressing my complete disgust at the ample blame that so many should share for the state of our economy at this time) OK, I feel better... Thus, we offered them the chance to host Max at our house, if they so desired. They agreed to take care of him, and play the location choice by ear.

As mentioned earlier, Friday and Saturday reports were glowing. He was eating, playing with stuffy sheep, and crazy running around their backyard. During the following week, Max pretty much went where they went. And they all loved it. "Find it" (throw a treat for him, and watch him race to it) in the backyard regularly. A walk on the rails-to-trails project. Long walks on the quiet streets behind where they live, as the street they're on is far too busy to walk on itself. Extended trip to the local PetSmart where, we're told, Max personally selected his Christmas present.

They returned to Pa on Friday, to find things ok at home, except the non-functioning hot water heater. Max met us in the back yard upon our return home Saturday. I'd called Mom and Dad from Key West (remember, I've jumped ahead), and they asked to stay in Pa until Monday, to attend the monthly Keystone Greyhounds City Island Strut. Of course, we agreed. Next thing I know, its late afternoon Saturday, we're home, and Christine is showing Keystone's web site to Mom and Dad. At this point, I'm sick (more on that later), and don't really notice this at first. A little while later, I find out that by Max day 3, Mom has said to Dad, "I think a greyhound would work for us". Keystone's leader often says that greyhounds sell themselves, and Max sure did. We reviewed the dogs on the site again Sunday morning, before driving to Harrisburg for the Strut. There, they met some of the foster dogs, even getting to walk one of them a little. His adoption was pending, and was sealed that day.

When Mom and Dad returned home on Monday, they took an adoption form with them. Now begins the search for "the one". And that, along with work, along with the return of some aspects of my DCL cold, is why updates are slow in coming. DW and I have had extensive phone conversations with Mom and Dad over the course of the last week about greyhound adoption. Yesterday, they mailed their completed adoption form. They even travelled to Northern Pa last Sunday to meet one of the foster dogs. Since they don't have email/the internet, DW and I are the email conduit for conversations with Keystone. And the middlepersons for questions. Along with trying to answer as many questions ourselves as we can.

I've finally decided to go to the Doctor tomorrow about this 3+ week old cold. Off Friday, I'll try to return to normal trip report programming then. I predicted that Max would lead to another dog for Mom and Dad, and Christine agreed. We just didn't think it would be a greyhound; we predicted they'd return to a breed they'd had before: Lab, Collie.

I'd hoped to post this info closer to the end, but now seems more appropriate. A good reason for the delay in updates, I think.

Fortified by the modern miracle of science that is medicine, we return now to regular programming:

Monday, day at sea. When I left off, we were eating meal #1 of the day at Goofy's Galley. After that, we proceeded to the fitness center for a workout. I think the expansion of the fitness center a couple of years ago was a big improvement. I'd still like more overhead lighting in the forward section. That's the new area, above where you used to be able to see some of the bridge. The aerobic and weight machines are from LifeFitness. My home gym uses different weight machines, which threw me off a bit when trying to get all the parts in the right positions and the weights right. We think this was the day that Peter was leading a spinning class up on the forward area. Did I mention that he's very enthusiastic? :yay:

Then to Topsiders, for meal #2. Must say, I don't care much for the scrambled eggs on the buffet line. I find them too moist/runny. I forgot about the omelette station at the aft end that day, and made a mental note for the future. We returned to our stateroom, changed into our swimsuits, and returned to the spa. Our Romantic Escape at Sea (REAS) package included length of cruise passes to the Tropical Rainforest room. Christine was already a lounge chair lizard by the time I got there. I took a lounger, and we relaxed for several minutes, and warmed up. Next, into the mild sauna. I recall that my total time in the mild sauna in 2007 could be counted with just 2 hands, using a second as the unit of time. Not so this year! I could tolerate it! It didn't seem like my lungs were on fire. So, we spent about 10 minutes in there, then proceeded to the dry sauna for 10 minutes. Back to indulging our inner lizards for 5-10 minutes, and it was time to go.

Why leave such a place of bliss, you ask? Two words: Palo brunch. Last year, we had 1030 seating for brunch. That made for a disjointed meal schedule that day. So this time, we went for the latest time: 11:30. This way, it would become our lunch. Or, if you prefer, meal #3. The night before, we received a voicemail from Palo, indicating that we were welcome to show up any time between 11:15 and 11:30. We were seated at a table on the left, just before where the food begins. Several DISers were already there: StaciJo and family, the LovableGluttons, and more (sorry for not remembering everyone). Taking the advice of the Gluttons, I tried the caviar. I found it to be quite tasty, perched atop a cold scallop, with just a touch of cocktail sauce. We couldn't decide on a pizza type, so we had one made with half sausage and half pepperoni. I enjoyed my side (pepperoni), while Christine found the sausage quite spicy. Things remembered: a trip where I only stopped at the cheese table, cold scallops, DW with crab claws, a Cinnabon quality roll, proscutto wrapped asparagus. We both had a main entree of smoked salmon with alfredo pasta. "Can't put a finger on it", DW says, but deserts this year just weren't as good as 2007.

It all sounds wonderful Sean - we couldn't get Palo this time but hopefully next time when we are Castaway members we will be able to make it in there. I won't be trying the caviar though. We were so stuffed from brunch, it took discussions over the weekend, plus checking the Navigators, to figure out just what the heck we did Monday afternoon. There was shopping time in the stores, wandering the ship, quality time on deck 4. It was there that we discovered those wonderful lounge chairs. The ones everybody talks about on the DIS. Nice! :cloud9: We even saw the deployed stabilizer fin as we walked around the deck.

Those Navigators helped me to remember one of the highlights of our trip: the art of the theme show ship tour. We arrived just outside Palo shortly before 3pm. There were only a few others there. Some of whom looked a little "green in the gills". I knew they wouldn't be with us for long. In the end, the group numbered in the 12-14 range. A smaller group, according to our guide: Neville.

Neville is a part of the cruise staff, and is thoroughly enthusiastic about his job. He was a part of cast 1 of the child care club, and one of the casts for the shows. I think he said they're on cast #22 for the shows. He was in the low teens. So, he's been around. If you ever have the chance to take this tour, especially if you see him leading it, it will be an hour well spent.

Tomorrow, I'll try to detail the tour.

Nice to see you guys too.
Can't wait to hear about the tour. This was something we wanted to do last year, but never seemed to find the time. Why oh why is there never enough time? Did they do the tour that let you see the stage/costumes for the shows? I sooooooo wanted to do that too, but we didn't have it offered since we had Ducky instead.......I was glad to have Ducky instead
though.:thumbsup2
Always reasons to go back again..............did you book another cruise this time around?

I'll have to do the tour review later. It was really good. I'm sure I can't remember all that we learned. Tried to get new ship info out of Neville, but no luck. He said some have seen plans, but nothing definite yet.

Ok, so I owe an update...
Mom and Dad came to visit on Turkey day. I had to work. We all piled into the suv and went to a Keystone Greyhounds meet and greet on Saturday. Its where we try to get others interested in adopting. Around 15 greyhounds there, with 4 up for adoption. Tonight, Mom and Dad have their Keystone home visit. If I don't get much of an update posted, please understand. They promised to call once the visit is over.

The ship tour, with Neville. Our tour numbered around 15, which we feel was a nice, intimate number. We began outside Palo, where Neville explained a bit about the building of the ships. He told us how there aren't any Mickey Mouses (Mices?) in Palo, Palo was an homage to the Italy (where the ships were built), and the Italian glasswares in the cases. Knowing where the new ships will be built, I asked if the adult restaurant on them would be German-themed. Neville didn't know, but it got a laugh from him. No spoiler alerts here, as he indicated that there is still much to be decided regarding the new ships. The next topic was: carpeting. Please, please, contain your excitement. Neville discussed how many different carpet styles there are in the public areas of the ship. He also indicated that they get their carpets from the Phillipines, because that is the country of the largest number of crew members (we took this with just the slightest grain of salt). They have reserves on the ship to be able to replace all the carpets, save one: the Beat Street area. Let's see if I can recall elevator lobby carpets correctly: dolphins= guest rooms only on that floor, anchors= entertainment, the script WD= the Walt Disney Theater floor.

Moving forward, to the main lobby area, deck 5. Neville discussed the chandelier in the main lobby. We've seen other works by the artist at the Corning Museum of Glass (www.cmog.org), and found it interesting. What was really neat was the relief that goes around the lobby, just between decks 4 and 5 (I believe). Take a look at it sometime, as each of the characters represents a department on the ship. I got some photos, but need to reconcile with Photobucket (who's now gracious enough to resize the last ones I posted). Next, we went down to the WD theater for more carpet discussion. Following that, it was time to go outside on deck 4, where Neville showed us 2 interesting things: where the ship's halves were welded together, and the deployed (at the time) stabilizer fin. The tour was scheduled for an hour, but lasted slightly longer. It was very much worth out time. Neville seemed to genuinely enjoy his job, and is proud to be on such a ship.

One more thing, especially for those with little ones: someone asked on the tour about muster stations and the kids clubs. Here's what I remember: as soon as a muster station issue is suspected, the staff of all the kids areas are notified. They will return their young charges to their age appropriate kids club home base. Next, a system-wide page will go out to all kids club pagers, to come get your child. The child will remain at the club until picked up by a parent. If not picked up in 10 minutes (I might have that number wrong), children will be taken to their appropriate muster station by kids club staff. The staff will remain with them until a parent arrives there. Neville noted that the bracelet worn by each child contains a code (easily read) stating what muster station location to take the child to. Lifejacket? They have dozens of extras all around deck 4.

Must now go. Its greyhound call time.

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen, Girls and Boys, this is your author speaking. It is currently around 20F out, with wind chills below 10F. As a result, afternoon walking with Max has been cancelled for today. The skies are sunny, though. After much delay, we return to the cruise:

After the tour, Christine and I went over to the port side of the ship, where we indulged in the wonderful deck 4 lounge chairs for a bit. Dinner(s) are, especially with the time passed, a blur. Part of me thinks that this is the night that DW discovered a Konked Kooler. After a couple of nights of water and soda selections, I think poor Sebastian's brain seized when Christine asked him if she could get a Konked Kooler with dinner. He asked her a second time what she wanted, then, with a puzzled look, said he'd have to look into it. As I continue to fight through the haze of time :hourglass , I think we were in PC for this meal, meaning that one of my favorite items of the cruise was on the menu: fritters.

Now, for me, fritters conjures up memories of summer. In Penn Yan, NY, there is a small fried chicken/ice cream shop called Seneca Farms. (pauses to wipe accumulating drool). They make their own corn fritters, and serve them with NY State maple syrup. (suction, please). I like to get the small shrimp boat, with 3 fritters on the side. Then, head to the front of the building afterwards for a chocolate chip cookie dough flurry, with soft serve vanilla. I think they open next month. Mom and Dad will likely be there week 1, and torment me with a telephone call as they sit at their booth. Please, allow me a moment of silent reflection...

Sebastian returned, and proudly proclaimed that, indeed, a Konked Kooler was being prepared for DW at that very moment. I must say, I think we've found a weak spot, and a hole in our budget. Once again, we skipped the show, and wandered the ship a bit. One of the things we enjoyed was just walking the halls and stairs of the ship, looking at all the art work. It meant a little more after the tour. (they really do think about things at that level of detail).

Tuesday dawned with rough seas as we approached the Mexican port of Cozumel. After rotating 180 degrees, the ship docked at the end of a pier, with a Caribe Trader ship on the other side. It seemed that Mr Caribe was intent on performing ship's maintenance that day, something that would later come into play (cue dramatic music).

We once again haunted Goofy's Galley (please open up more eating stations early, not just room service and GG, though we love GG). After meal #1, we headed to the deck 7 secret area at the stern, for group Yoga. DW is a former gymnast, and dancer, while I'm more of a rock (competitive shooter). I do work out around 6 days a week, but as you can see from my photos, I'm not on the cream or the clear. But, I do actually try new things once in a while. Peter arrived carrying what was quite possibly every mat they had in the fitness center. No sweat. No heavy breathing. One look outside, another at his watch, and he proclaimed that class would be moved to the fitness center. "I'll wait here for a few minutes, then be up to join you," Peter said.

Flash forward (literally) to the Fitness Center. There are 3 of us, plus Peter. It is me, DW, and another woman who appears to have a clue what she's doing. Peter begins the class. I'm thinking it was because we started late, but the speed of the class was up there with an over-caffeinated squirrel. Barely getting into a pose, on to the next. Peter did state that he was moving the pace along. Ummm, good for those in the class who had a clue. Not so good for me, who wanted to try something I've done a bit of on my own, but without formal classes/training. You know, when your fitness instructor shouts: SPARTANS, PREPARE FOR BATTLE! during your yoga class, its going to be a teenie bit on the intense side. Are the swords, shields, and red speedos coming out next? He's coming around, helping us all with our poses. I'm asked, "do you stretch much? You could use more stretching." It would appear that, on this day, my flexibility is approaching that of Gumby, after being in the freezer overnight. I reply that we have a couple's spa villa appointment that morning. "Good idea," I'm told.

Now, all witty commentary aside: Peter was a better instructor than anybody we've had on DCL since Melissa in 2005. He was genuinely enthusiastic about teaching the classes (we saw him doing spinning and more during our workouts). Also, he took interest in each student (small class), and did work with them, on their level, to help them get something more out of the class.

Some instrumental music would be appropriate background for this post. Perhaps James Brickman's Disney collection. Or: something played at your local sushi bar...

We arrive at 1035 for our 1045 Couples Spa Villa time. After filling out forms requiring as much information as the average medical practice needs, we're led to the middle of the 3 treatment areas. There, we meet our 2 female attendants. They've got some suggestions already, based upon our confessed stresses and issues. Already, they've determined which of them will be paired with each of us for our massage. We listen to their suggested treatments, then ask about other options. Christine decided on the relaxation massage, with some hot stone work, while I chose the hot stone massage. We're then toured through the spa, all the while being told what happens where, etc. The jacuzzi has been filled with water, and now several reagents are being added to it, as part of the experience.

Next: more spa time, and "are you're hands made of asbestos?"

The Spa Villa:
Upon entering the room, you're in the massage area. This part has a sliding glass door, and from door to door, is 10-12 feet deep (I'd say). The outside (verandah) portion is about as deep, maybe slightly deeper. Outside, on the right as you face the water, is a wide, cushioned, lounge. More than enough room there for 2. On the left as you enter the area, is the shower. Between the shower and the railing at the side of the ship is a 2 person hot tub.

After taking our massage orders, the attendants led us to the lounge, where they described the timeline of the experience, and showed us the tea selections. Never having had tea before, I selected the chamomile (spelling?). I don't recall the selection of DW, but there were only 3 choices.

As tea was being described by one attendant, the other began to prepare the hot tub. 2-3 additives were being mixed into the water, based upon our needs (those darned forms again!). A pitcher of ice water with cucumbers, and 2 glasses, sat on the edge of the tub. The attendants went inside to prepare the massage area, and closed the curtain between inside and out. DW and I doffed our robes, and swimsuit-clad, hopped into the hot tub.

The hot tub experience was about 25 minutes long, I think. We enjoyed taking turns in each of the 2 seat positions: one looking towards the ship, the other out to Cozumel. Swathed in bubbles the whole time. At the appointed time, we were told that the massage area was ready. We showered off, and took our positions on the tables.

The massage portion lasted 50-60 minutes, but without a watch or clock, who can really tell? DW reports that hers was a good massage. Mine was ok, but those stones, they're HOT! I don't know how my attendant was able to hold them. I think she saw me flinch at one point, because she asked about the temperature. I told her it was a bit too much for me. The stones got cooler for a while, but then she seemed to be using hotter stones again. Something for those with tender skin, or good pain receptors, to consider.

Now the consistency of well cooked spaghetti, we went back out to the lounge. There, we were presented with a platter of fruits. I remember melon, honeydew, and chocolate dipped strawberries. They were on a total of 3-4 skewers. The tea experience was thus: I took a couple of sips, and DW finished my tea. We were allowed to lounge out there for 20-25 minutes. Despite the grinding, etc. being done on the Caribe ship, we were forward of it, and it was quiet. (that ship was much shorter than the Magic) Chris and I noticed that a small boat had broken loose, and was being pounded against the sea wall as we lay there. High winds, and rough seas, for sure!

You know what's next: the sales pitch. They reviewed the various products used on both of us, and we did agree to buy 2. One was a bottle of green bath solution that we'd bought in 2005, and really liked. The other was a cream/gel to soothe tired muscles. We paid our tab, and headed back to the locker room. Now, one thing in the Passporter that we forgot: tipping. I believe they say some tip less than x % of the total price, as you've got so much alone time built into this. We forgot, so they got a real nice tip. Those 3 hours (or so) put more onto our shipboard charge account than the rest of the trip, I think.

Would we do it again: yes, but only if we were feeling really good about our finances. It is very expensive, even without erroneous tipping, and product purchases. Is it worth the money: possibly/probably. The service was quite attentive, but not invasive. I should've spoken up more about the stones. Next time, we might get massages at home, before leaving, instead. Was it something we look back on happily: yes.

Time to go, for now. Mr. Max needs some family walking time.

As stated before: now the consistency of pudding, we next enjoyed lunch (at Lumiere's, I think). A hidden gem (IMHO) is lunch at Lumiere's. Especially on a port day. Now, they might be open on sea days, but we've only lunched there on port days. I had the blackened shrimp salad. Other than good general feelings about lunch there, that's about it. It could be spa goggles, but I actually don't think so. Again: a nice place for lunch.

Our Wednesday was supposed to be Costa Maya, but had been changed to Grand Cayman, due to continued repairs from hurricaine Dean. We continued out of Cozumel, and into the rough seas. As always, we awoke early the next morning... to rough seas (I sense a trend!). I commented to DW how we were to tender in to GC, and that there must be a limit to the seas for the tender boats. Admittedly, we've never tendered anywhere, but I know enough about boating, and safety. Sure enough: the report from the bridge channel said it all. Our position and course suddenly didn't quite work out for a heading to GC. I told DW, "we're not going to GC. We've changed course."

Next: why, the fitness center, of course! Once again, we missed the big announcement. Now, an editorial comment for all DCL staff hanging upon the every word typed from my fingertips: please pipe important announcments, like port changes, over the speaker system in the fitness center. On our way out of the fitness center, we noticed that it seemed to be an "all hands on deck" kind of staffing at the Vista Spa desk. I inquired as to what had been announced. I was correct (a theme that would continue throughout the day). One staffer said they'd cancelled GC, then quickly said to check with desk services. Almost like she wasn't allowed to tell us what 2000+ people had just heard over a PA system. But, we understood, as their phones were really starting to ring.

"So, if we're at sea today, what do you think they'll do?" asked DW. "The only port I can think of to go in a timely fashion is Key West. Its not like we're going to drop in on Cuba," I replied. Brent announced just then that they were working on something, and retold the tale of the first announcement. Port authorities at GC had declared the port closed (unable to use the tenders) due to the winds and wave action. The report from the bridge channel continued to show us 7 nautical miles from GC for most of the morning.

Fresh Navigators were being printed as fast as possible, and we went looking for one as soon as we finished breakfast (priorities).

Next up: ahh, a relaxing day at sea...RIGHT!

We acquired 2 copies of the fresh, sudden day at sea Navigators. Now, we're sure that they always have a "plan B", but boy, they can change things quicky when they have to. With our desire to try new things in mind, we scanned the Navigators for items of interest. Of course, there was shopping to do, as the stores would now be open all day. And, we didn't want to wait until the last day or so to make our final purchases. We spotted a Latin dance class in the afternoon, at Diversions (I believe), and made plans to attend.

On the way to the class, we got the obligatory shopping out of the way. To maximuze frugality, we often try to think of things we might like to buy/feel we need before leaving for the mouse. Then, we target to those things when shopping. In this case, it was a new hooded sweatshirt for me. DW got one too, albeit in a different color. They've come in handy this cold winter.

There was quite a good crowd for the class. Probably 50 or so. All ages, shapes, and sizes. The instructor was very energetic, and had fun with some of the folks who weren't quite getting it. But, in a friendly, laughing together, sort of way. It was an hour well spent. For those who don't dance much (at all), YOU WILL feel it afterwards. We learned several moves of the merengue (spelling?), and had a lot of fun doing it.

Later that evening, as my sinuses began to deteriorate, and the muscle soreness set in, I was certain for a while that I was coming down with influenza. Then, I remembered the pilates, deep massage, and dance class. I knew I was getting a head cold, but had reasons to explain my muscle pain. Dinner would've been so much better if I hadn't had that 1-2 punch hitting me. I believe DW again indulged in a Konked Kooler.

Next: we do it. We go to the Pirate party.

Ahrg, where be we? Oh, Pirate Party!

This was our very first Pirate party. And, quite possibly, the latest we've ever stayed up while on a cruise. I believe that the party was scheduled to begin at 10pm. We headed up around 15-20 minutes early, to find several hundred people already participating in the pre-party. DW and I went straight to deck 10, and finally found a good spot, just in front of the rear funnel. The skies were clear, but the winds strong. My Latin dance legs, and head cold, were not pleased. You could see people having to shift, from time to time, to brace against the strong gusts. They were loudly playing all sorts of dance music, while some "pirates", including our tour guide, egged everyone on. Those people had the stamina of aerobics instructors. Very high energy.

Every so often, a skull came onto the Dumbotron to announce how long it was to the real party. You could see staff working up above us, on the rear funnel, and various rigging components. With the winds...lets just say that those items weren't used, and I'm thinking that normally they are. The party was about 20 minutes long, perhaps a few more. No doubt, they were working off of the plan B script. But, they did a very good job of misdirecting people's attention, so much so that I don't think that woman knew that Mickey was standing next to her until they were spotlighted.

Now, where in the world are we? Somewhere off the northern coast of Cuba. And how do they conclude the Pirate party? Fireworks! I mentioned this to DW as the party reached its conclusion, and we wondered just how smart it would be to launch pyrotechnics. But, we're here today to say that nothing adverse happened. Ours was a very good vantage point, as the winds were effecting the trajectory of the items launched. It was then that we realized why the back areas of deck 10 were blocked off, and nobody was allowed there.

Quickly down the port side aft stairs (just forward of the Mickey pool), and we spotted the buffet. It appeared to be presided over by the Palo chef and his team, though it did look like the chef was watching the fireworks instead of the food. But at this time, it was well past our bedtime, we were cold, and I had a cold, so to bed it was.

Next stop: the Conch Republic!

So glad that your parents adopted a greyhound. He/She??? is a really beauty!

I enjoyed the spa as well, I did a spa taster on the first day (during sailaway) and we did a Cabana Couples Massage on the second CC day. We enjoyed the massage at CC, but probably would not do it again, preferring to enjoy the island instead.

Looking forward to hearing more...

Dodgie (a boy) has been a big hit up in upstate NY with Mom and Dad. Everybody wants to love him, which he gladly accepts. His fur is as soft as cashmere.

There will be tales of our island exploring on the 2nd CC day coming soon.

Key West wasn't on the original (v 1.0) itinerary for this cruise. But now, we're up to v 3.0. DW and I looked at the list of excursions provided by DCL, as well as our trusty Passporter. In the end, we decided upon the Trolley tour, with the Little White House. Booked it at the Shore Excursions desk on our (unscheduled) day at sea.

We could see KW in the distance, off the port bow of the Magic. It appeared that we were already (breakfast time) in a specific channel into the port. Another ship was already there. In time, we realized it was an older RCCL vessel. Problem was: they got the good parking space. It would seem that there is only one main berth for cruise ships at KW. Being a late addition to the party, we would be docking at the old Navy pier. DW and I went up to deck 10 to observe the docking process. First, we had to turn 180 degrees, then slowly float over to the pier on the port side. We could see trollies and Conch Trains coming down the pier to a staging area by the ship. Next, we headed back to our stateroom.

I got out and powered up my cell phone, to surprise DM/DD/Max with a call. DW went to the shub to primp. Before I got the call placed, I was summoned to the shub room by DW. Since I hesitated, she provided some incentive: "my engagement ring just fell down the sink drain". :scared: "Were you running water before/after it?" "I don't know, I took it off to apply sunscreen, and it slipped out of my hand". (breathe, remain calm, getting upset won't help, etc.) FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, DON'T RUN ANY WATER! So I jump on the room phone to maintenance, but there's no answer after double digit rings. Next, I try Guest Services. "Room 6624, my wife's engagement ring just fell down the sink" "Help is on the way. I'll send someone immediately". Within 5 minutes, a gentleman with a wrench was at the door. He had the pipe under the sink off in seconds, and the ring was retrieved. :woohoo: I'm no plumber, but one of my grandfather's was. It looked to me like there was an extra segment in the outflow pipe, possibly designed to catch things, like engagement rings, that fall down sinks from time-to-time. I was then able to relax a bit, restart my heart, and was even given permission to tell the tell to Mom/Dad during the call. (I waited until we were home)

Mom/Dad were surprised by the call, but with caller ID on their cell, they knew it was me. They told us how Max had experienced his first snow, and several excursions to pet stores. What I didn't know, is that they'd fallen even deeper in love with Max, and greyhounds in general.

As we were back in the U.S. after visiting a foreign port, we had to pass through Customs. This wasn't quite as smooth as the St Thomas Customs in 2007. It seems that the KW Customs agents are a bit on the shy side, and didn't want to come out of their shells unless/until they were all present. And one of them was running late. Fortified by a dose of coffee, or the sight of an almost full (by now) Walt Disney theater, they bravely forged ahead without their missing team member. Of course, those with early excursions had to be there first, and we talked to some who'd been waiting in the theater for 90 minutes. Fortunately for us, ours was a later excursion, so we were slotted to be at the theater a little later. Our wait was in the 30-40 minute range.

Next up: Key West, sanitized for the little ones!

There was a bit of confusion on the pier as to what conveyance was for whom. Our tour seemed to contain 12-15 of us, and we were deposited onto a trolley. It was sunny and warm, but Christine quickly discovered how to operate the window next to us, so that we might enjoy some breeze. We then proceeded to sit there, as many confused souls came by to inquire of the driver or clipboard toting supervisor if they should be on the trolley with us. In the end, the trolley filled up, as there was another excursion for the trolley tour only.

We thoroughly enjoyed this part of the excursion (the trolley tour). The name of our guide/driver escapes me, but he was easy to hear, not a bad driver, and very informative. The trolley tour lasted about an hour, I believe. During this time, I'd say that we covered most of the streets of Key West- or at least it felt that way. The trolley seats were a bit uncomfortable on the derriere after a while, but not intolerable. Items discussed/shown on the tour: bars, swimwear shops, Jimmy Buffet's recording studio, houses of the famous, houses that are known or important for various reasons, the cemetery, the Southernmost point buoy, landmark trees, the Mile 0 marker for US-1, and an elusive search for chickens. We debarked the trolley at the main trolley hub, and were met by our 2 guides from the Little White House (LWH).

They walked us over to the old Naval Yard area where President Truman spend many days on vacation. By this time, we were hungry, I had my tired Latin dance legs, and I was fighting the onset of illness. As a result, we probably didn't get as much out of the tour as we would've normally. I do recall that we were able to learn many interesting things about the house, and its artifacts. There were some in our group who didn't have as good as time as we did, however. There must've been some confusion as to what was truly included in this excursion. After we saw the view the video at the start of the tour, a LWH staff member came in, and made an announcement of apology for the confusion of some of the group. And that any issues related to how the excusion was presented/marketed should be taken up with the DCL Excursion Desk. We think it had to do with Hemingway's house...that perhaps it was to be an actual stop on the tour, and not a drive-by.

After the LWH tour, we headed back to trolley central, and caught the first available back to DCL. After some lunch (that helped), we enjoyed the rest of our afternoon and evening.

Next up: A 2nd stop at CC. They've finally had a CC day, now will they get a CC stop with Chamber of Commerce-type weather?

Hi Melanie! We ARE booked on a 7 night eastern, around 10/23/2010. Just booked 7 nights at the BC for late September this year. Got in on the free dining, and are saving money some other ways. We're also booked at Discovery Cove.

Are you there now???

I'm on vacation this week. Today, I cut up cardboard for recycling, mowed the bank, thoroughly vaccumed under the refrigerator, got groceries, and had a haircut. Yesterday, I mowed the back yard, sealed cracks in the siding, and got the new gas grill up and working. Doesn't seem as interesting as this vacation was. So that means its time for some Mouse reflections, as I add an update...

Now remember, our notes are about as skimpy as the average Marisa Miller swimsuit.

Friday. 2nd day at CC.
We'd booked the kayak and walking adventure for our 2nd CC day. Upon rising, we had breakfast. You just know that there was some cherry lattice going on somewhere. By now, you're thinking this stuff must be laced with hallucinogenic drugs, and served upon plates of gold. But no, its just one of life's simple little things to enjoy. Like yesterday, when Max and I sat out on the deck, and watched the afternoon westbound planes fly over. Got our Castaway Club bag all packed up with sunscreen, waterproof camera, etc. Slathered a couple of layers of sunscreen on ourselves before heading down to meet at the Promenade Lounge (#3 use of our verandah: sunscreen application, behind reading a book and just relaxing). It was at the PL that we got the bad news: sea conditions where we'd be kayaking in the ocean were unsafe, and the tour had been cancelled. Oh, well, we turned lemons into lemonade, and treated the money refunded like lottery winnings. It would help to decrease our stateroom charge tab.

Now, we had the entire day to enjoy. Already packed and prepared, we headed off the ship, and walked to She Sells Seashells. There, we shopped for souvies with our refunded kayak fees. Got some items for baby showers at my work, and a 50% off Mickey hawaiian shirt for me. And, we'd spent <$40! Our next stop was a set of hammocks out by the Head's Up bar. Hadn't been there but a few minutes when it started to rain. Steadily. Hunkered under our multiple towels, we were cozy, but it just wasn't the same. And so, the debate began: return to the ship, or wait it out.

In the end, we began our trek to the ship, as we thought there'd be more food and fun there. Along the way, we came to a fork in the road, so we decided to take it. Now, the rain had let up at this point, so we did this intentionally. We knew that the path led to the airstrip. From there, we decided to walk the bike path loop out to the observation tower and back.

Next up: wandering about the island, looking for a really big boat.

Got word of the decision this afternoon: Dodgem will be joining Mom and Dad later this month.

Here's his photo page on Keystone's site:

I'll post more info later...

Oh my goodness! Both Max and Dodgem are absolutely adorable. We have an Italian Greyhound right now but have already decided that we will be adopting a "regular size" greyhound in the future.

We must have looked odd, 2 people walking along the bike path. I'm certain we're not the first, but I think some of the bikers were surprised when they came up on us. If I recall correctly, the bike path loop is about a mile. We were going at a nice pace, but below WDW speeds. Some of the bikers who passed commented on how quickly we got to the observation tower after they did.

The tower is about 4 stories, I'd say. I think you can spot it from the ship, if you know what you're looking for. It was rather windy at the top that day. The view was quite impressive. The ship stuck out like a sore thumb, off in the distance. Nothing even close to its size (of course). 180 degrees from that, lay Serenity Bay. We could also see marshlands between us and SB, which we speculated we would've explored if the kayaks hadn't been cancelled. Disney even had a few items that they'd placed to look at, which I think you can only see from the tower. I'll effort to find out photos.

On the walk back, we could hear, but not see, the sounds of construction. Perhaps it was just normal stuff, but maybe it was in preparation for the new ships. After running into those Lovable Gluttons, and having a nice chat, we trekked all the way back to the Magic. Lunch that day for us was aboard the ship. We then headed to the Quiet Cove pool, where we found some of those nice wood and fluffy padded loungers just waiting for us on the port side. We lounged there for the remainder of the afternoon. During this time, 101DalmationFan (Lennie) and her husband (Al), came by. We traded tales of the day, and found out that they're also skipping 2009 cruises, and have rebooked for the same 2010 as us. Interestingly, their table was right next to ours on this cruise, first seating, with the same service team. But they always seemed to get done with dinner well before our table. We also talked about linking dining next time, as their friends/family wouldn't be with them. If it happens, it will be our 3rd time on a cruise with them. She's great with Fish Extenders (FE's), by the way.

Of course, the last evening involves saying goodbye to tablemates (which we thoroughly enjoyed, despite some bumps at the start), server team, a final stroll of the ship, and the dreaded packing. Back on the ship for most of the afternoon, we had a head start. Walking back to our room, we could already hear unhappiness in other cabins, as they realized that the clock was ticking. Someone was already pleading with their stateroom host about what the "real" deadline was to get their luggage out. We spent time on our balcony, watching the lights of Freeport in the distance as we headed northward. A quick trip to Shutters, to select final photographs, and we were done for the night.

Oh no - the last night blues. I think I am putting off writing the rest of my trip report as I will have to reach the dreaded last day. I think you must have walked past our cabins and heard that "unhappiness" going on - it certainly was a very depressing time getting those bags packed up. Thanks for sharing Sean - a great installment!:goodvibes

Hey Sean.....we were at Jensen Beach with a quick stop over at Beach Club Villas for 2 nights so we could go to EPCOT for one day before coming home.

Looks like we will be going to WDW about a month apart.

I so want to cruise again but not sure when we will do it.

That was the phrase on a cute Finding Nemo magnet that appeared on our door with about 2 nights to go in the cruise. As always, we rose early on debarkation day. Christine was first out onto the balcony. I believe we were coming up on the channel back into Port Canaveral at the time. I joined her as we slowly crept back to our berth. Its such a quiet time on the ship.

We performed the final packing of our carry-ons, got dressed, and went back out to watch the ship being tied-off. Always a neat orchestration. The little forklifts were ready to pounce, as soon as the first one got the ramp over to the Magic. And the dance began: bags off, produce being unloaded from trucks, other provisions being offloaded onto the pier, and a supervisor's cart (complete with umbrella) being unloaded to the pier. Once again, this was all going on below our starboard-side aft stateroom. There were some dropped bags, but the worst thing we saw was a slight collision between 2 of the forklifts. Looked like somebody got an earful after it, too.

Another of our debarkation day traditions is breakfast at Topsiders. Bidding a final, lingering, farewell to our room, we trudged to the elevators. Needless to say, not many were taking them up. We gathered our food (fewer options than any "normal" day), and took a seat inside at the back. Once done, we headed over to the port side to walk out.

Back at the elevator lobby, Christine said, "why don't we take one last walk on deck 9". So we did, walking up the starboard side, and gazing at the activity so far below. You could tell that things on deck 9 were getting cleaned and prepped for the next cruise. At the forward elevators, we went down to 3, where we then headed back towards the debarkation point. A hearty farewell from the CM's, our survey completed in detail, and we stepped back into Florida. :sad1:

And now, a pause for some editoral comment to DCL (I know they're out there, lurking, drinking in my every word): Please place the survey into the staterooms earlier than you do. Perhaps the last morning. Getting back from dinner, and plotting how to pack/get to Shutters/do we see the show/get to bed/etc. doesn't leave a lot of time for a well-crafted survey response.

Down the hall that, just one week before, brought such promise. The right turn to the escalator. As we descended, we spotted Porter Don, who'd helped us last year. He was at the bottom of the other escalator. He told us that the fine young gentleman at the bottom of our escalator would be happy to help us, so we requested his services.

This year, we found all of our tagged bags on the first pass, and were off to the Customs lines. There was a man ahead of us who had far too many bags to be traveling alone. The CM asked him where his family was, and he said they'd be right along. "The entire family must present together. Don't get into line until you have everyone," he was instructed. I believe I recall him not heeding this advice, and getting punted back into the que by a Customs agent. With barely a glance at our tediously completed forms, we were through.

With our porter and cart full of luggage as our fullback, we followed along in his wake, as we headed to our pickup point. We planted ourselves amongst some of our DIS friends, and began to wait. It was after 8, and I don't recall the exact time, but our pickup was for 0900.

Next: Continuing the long journey home, but at breakneck speeds!
