What a fun idea.
I went out with a bunch of coworkers last weekend. We call ourselves the pink ladies and one of the secretaries I work with made all these costumes, and we walked around Salem MA and collected donations for breast cancer research. This was the second year they did it, and my first. It was a great time. Salem is insane at halloween.

Haven't had much opportunity to photograph my kids in this year's costumes, but here are a couple from the not too distant past. ;)

...but it is never too early for me to start thinking about Holiday Cards. What are some favorite websites for creating yours? I am especially interested in cards with multiple pictures since it is so hard to get all of three of my girls to smile pretty at the same time :cutie: :cutie: :cutie: !!

I've done the same thing the past two years but had Shutterfly print them. There are loads of electronic scrapbooking sites where you can download "papers" and embellishments. Beware, it's rather addictive. Here are a couple I've done. If you don't want to go to all that trouble, I know that Shutterfly and Kodakgallery both finally offer templates for more than one photo.
Have fun!

Our own little Tinker Bell! Poor dog, she was the victim of my daughter's boredom as she was cleaning out her closet and found an old costume of hers (had to photoshop the background, never trust a 16 yr old to clear the garbage out from behind a subject while photographing!).

About the photoshop question:
Photoshop can be quite intimidating, but if you have the time to sit and play with it you'll be able to do a lot of "basic" things like this. I have Photoshop 7, so it may be a bit different in other versions.
Changing the background took a few steps - this one was done quite quickly. First go to Window at the top and click on Tools (if it is not already checked) - this will open your tool bar. I used the magnetic lasso (tool bar) to cut the dog out (done very quickly - could have "cleaned" it up a bit). Then went to Select on the top and from that chose Inverse. That selected the background. Then went to Filter (also on top), to Blur, and chose Gaussian Blur. I left it on whatever settings that it was set on. Then changed the foreground color to orange (tool bar). Then chose the brush tool (tool bar) and set it on a splotchy brush (up at top) and splotched up the background.
I'm sure just reading this it doesn't sound simple, but it really is quite basic as far as photoshop is concerned. Try and sit with it a bit before definitely selling it - it can be frustrating, but also lots of fun.

I love the multiple picture cards! I will look into doing one this year. I took my X-mas picture while in Venice, Italy back in April. I try to take them while on vacation. I upload them to Ritzpix.com, choose from their selection of cards then pick them up at the store.

oooh. I think I'd like more info on this, please! :)
IIRC I've purchased most of the stuff I've used here: http://twopeasinabucket.kaboose.com/digital.asp . If you google "digital scrapbooking" you'll get plenty of sites that sell "supplies" and offer tutorials. If you scrapbook you'll see that things are organized in a similar way. Usually you buy and download a kit that has several different coordinating papers and embellishments in jpg format. You then pull them into your photo editor (I use Photoshop Elements 4.0) and use layers to create the layout. It's fun because you can resize things and use them in all kinds of different ways--for instance, the snowflakes that I used as frames in that first card were really little embellishments with initials in the center. I'm sure I'm not explaining it very well, but it's lots of fun and not as difficult as it sounds. :)
When you're finished with the card you just save it in jpg format and upload it to Shutterfly or whichever service you want to use. Check the sizes available before you make the card though so you'll have the right aspect ratio. I think Shutterfly's cards are 5x7.

This was the information I was looking for - I've dabbled in digital scrapbooking, but not really enough to know what I'm doing. I think I've got enough time to play with things before I have a good enough picture (I have 3 kids ;) ) to use for the card. :lmao:

Wow this thread is kinda making me sad. Our youngest went to a costume party last Saturday night - but isn't planning on doing anything tomorrow. Neither one of my DDs carved a pumpkin.
Maybe I will just have to taken matters into my own hands tomorrow when they are in school.
Mom can have fun too - right?
I wonder how they would react if I picked them up wearing a costume :lmao:

My DD isn't into it at all this year. I think it has to do with us being so busy this fall that there hasn't been alot of time to get excited about it. I think I will still carve a pumpkin with her this weekend. Who says it can't be done after halloween?

On a side note, if I had a slideshow of the kids that came to my house for halloween, it would be about 10 seconds long. I don't think that the Adams Family words would even start before it was over. I think we got about 10 kids MAXIMUM. It just isn't like the old days...
Agian, GREAT job!

One person made all those beautiful dresses? Amazing!

Nope. Just spent lots of money, read lots of books, and deleted lots of crummy shots. I'm at the point now where all I think I need to do to get where I want is to spend lots more money and read a lot more books.

I don't have any from the Disney party. I do have some pictures from Halloween back home last year. We set up a mini-studio in the garage and shot the trick-or-treaters as they came through. It was a hoot. We're going to do it again this year (hopefully better). You can see the shots at http://photos.barbierifamily.org/gallery/3752403_m6qFr.

:thumbsup2 Great job Mark! I was hoping you had 'set up shop' this Halloween as you did last year!
Did you do anything different with your set up this year compared to last?
Awesome job with your son's costume! The most creative one I saw in our area was one of my daughter's classmates went as a voting booth- complete with curtain. We had an informal poll at the end of the night because the 'booth' had two polling boxes (one representing each candidate) to collect the candy.
Thanks as always for sharing.

Can we use this to share our own pictures? Well I am going too since I thought my little girl was pretty darn cute in her Elephant costume. Which my Mom made. The head was all hand sewn and the body was on the sewing machine. She used to make all of our costumes when I was a kid growing up, and we had the best.

I had the idea a few years ago when I got frustrated by the lack of decent pictures of the kids in their costumes. Once I committed to getting a decent shot of my own kids for Halloween, it was an easy jump to include others. My advice is to keep it simple, set it up near where you are handing out candy, and be prepared to shoot kids as quickly as possible because they won't want to waste a lot of time posing when they can be trick-or-treating.
Our neighbors all love it because they now have decent pictures of their own kids and they love watching the slideshows. We shoot a lot of the neighborhood events - block parties, birthday parties, etc - and everyone asks to watch them when we are hosting events at our house. We've only been here 3.5 years, but the kids have all grown tremendously during that time and a lot of people have moved into and out of the neighborhood.

It was raining here, so we didn't get to take any outdoors like I wanted. I certainly didn't set up a backdrop with lighting to get these, and these were taken after trick-or-treating in the rain. It was all I could do to get everyone to hold on while I set up a tripod in my living room. I'm a natural light photog, and I'm still learning to bounce my flash, as is obvious here. lol

Oh you did what we did, bought the jet pack to add to the "costume." (I swear boys get the raw end on costumes) What an adorable Buzz! Ours was the only one we saw and everyone quoted lines at him and he'd respond by pushing a button to respond back.

Wen, what a coincidence...both of our Buzzes appear to have the same treat bucket! You can see it in my second image where our toddler is pretending to fly around. It's black material, says "Trick or treat" in orange with a ghost (I think) and collapses flat via a spiral coil on the inside.
We got our little guy's costume at Party City and bought the wings in the toy section at Target. They have gloves, too, but we didn't think they'd fit our little guy or they'd bee too heavy for him to wear all day. We also got him a new pair of Buzz sneakers that light up when he runs to wear with his costume; the colors went perfectly with his costume. I think DW got 'em at Payless. I was tempted to go dressed as Woody.

Too funny, they are the same! Great minds eh? DS had to settle for his Lightning McQueen shoes. I had actually thought of dressing DD as Jesse because of her red hair but she's all about the Princesses.

O...M...G... my boy has the same Lightning McQueen sneakers! They're black, have LM on the side, on the side of the bottom rubber part of the shoe it has tires, like the shoe itself were a little car. That's one of my boy's other favorite Disney characters. Great minds and all that.
I was surprised not to see more Disney costumes at DTD. There was one little girl dressed as Woody (not Jessie); I wish I had taken a picture of her with our little Buzz. Your little red-headed princess is adorable. Is that a Snow White costume? Because of her fair skin and dark hair my wife has a Snow White thing going on. We take pictures of her holding Snow White stuff all the time, and her email address has Snow White in it. Another coincidence.

I thought of this thread today when we made a little trip to Delaware for the annual Pumpkin Chunkin event. If you've never heard of it, basically people with too much time and money create giant cannons to shoot pumpkins literally thousands of feet across corn fields. It's held every year the weekend after Halloween. Here's a few shots of the cannons......
Yes, this cannon is mounted inside a school bus......

Let's see those Halloween pictures! We did our usual garage studio shoot of trick-or-treaters as they came through. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun. I changed up my lighting this year. I used this "v-flat rebound" technique (http://www.joemcnally.com/blog/2010/08/23/small-flash-into-big-flash-cheap-and-easy/)for my lighting because it seemed like an easy way to get even light across poorly posed groups quickly. It worked reasonably well. I love the look of the light, but I had too much light on my background. I'll have to rearrange a few things for next year.

So the light bounces out of the V onto the white wall then onto your subject? Would like to see your set up if you have pics. Love the effect! Your boys sure are growing up, such handsome trick or treaters!

My youngest - excuse the busy background, I grabbed him on his way out to a party - I dialed the new flash back a notch and snapped the little diffuser/cover on. The full size image on Smugmug shows the details of the 'decals' on his cheeks. His date was in a stunning 'Pixie' costume, but my wife threatened to turn me in for Child Exploitation if I took her picture...;)

looks interesting, since "an easy way to get even light across poorly posed groups quickly", was your goal, wouldn't it have been a lot less complicated to simply bounce 2 of your strobes{ alien bees} off of large umbrellas, one to each side of the camera..

The lighting set-up is very interesting. If you took a photo of yours, I'd love to see it.
I didn't take any pictures of the setup. It was relatively simple, though. I took a pair of 8'x4' foam core boards and taped one set of 8' edges together. I did this twice, so I had two pairs of boards. I stood these up and opened them so that I had the open side of the "V" shape pointing away from the subject. Behind me and the V's, I had a 9' roll of old beat up white paper. The lights were aimed into the V's. They diffused and bounced from there onto the white wall of paper where they were further diffused and bounced onto the subject.
If you look at the eyes or glasses of some of the pictures, you can see my in the catchlights. Here is an example:
http://photos.barbierifamily.org/Holidays/Halloween/2010-Halloween/MG2130/1072777320_T56k8-L-1.jpg
http://barbieri.smugmug.com/photos/1073020157_thC8P-M.jpg

It would have been less complicated to set up, but the result wouldn't have been as good and it would have meant more work. One difference would be that the light wouldn't have been as diffuse or broad. I could have gotten a similar effect by just pointing my lights at the background and dropping the V's, but they added a nice extra layer of diffusion.
The bigger problem is that it wouldn't have been consistent enough. I was dealing with people ranging from 24" to 76" tall with no time to change light heights in between. Even worse, some were wearing hats with broad rims. To get the lights low enough to illuminate under the brims of short subects would have meant having them too low for tall subjects. If I'd had a pair of giant octas on either side of me, that probably would have worked reasonably well, but I don't have a pair of giant octas. I only have two giant lights (an AB PLM used as a giant softbox and an 86" diffuser umbrella) and neither are that diffuse.
One issue I did run into was people in black costumes getting lost in the black background. I had my wife grab an AB400 with a background white shovel reflector on it to light the background when we had black costumed kids.
I have uploaded the first chunk of pictures here (http://photos.barbierifamily.org/gallery/14456527_GWjUq#1072754669_pYzEX). I rushed through as many as I could this morning. My camera settings were something like ISO 400, 1/160, f/8 to f/11 in manual mode on a 5DM2 with a 24-105 f/4 IS. My Lightroom settings were Lens Correction, default sharpening with the radius bumped to 1.3, +5 luminance noise reduction, +10 clarity, +10 vibrance, and post-crop vignetting. I occasionally through in some recovery. I made small crops on most shots.

I doubt that I'll ever shoot another Halloween without using this general setup. It was so easy and I'm so happy with the consistency of the results. I could definitely have sculpted light better if I had time to work each subject, but during a lot of the time I had a line of people waiting to be shot and had no time to make any adjustments other than to my aperture.
I will change a few things next year. I did a bunch of studio shoots over the weekend (14 different groups) before the Halloween shoot. To make that work, I semi-permanently hung background rollers at the back of the garage with black on the left and white on the right. That worked great for quickly switching backgrounds since I only had a move a few lights, but it left me right up against the walls. For Halloween next year, I'm going to move the black roller further towards the middle so that I have more room for my V's. I also want to experiment with different light heights, possibly including a light skipping off of the ground, and using black velvet instead of black paper.
I also want to "rope off" the area between the V's so that parents doing step in there. Having another person standing in front of my white wall throws off the lighting ratios.
I may also set up a monitor out of view of the shooting floor so that people can see their pictures after the shot. I've had bad experiences with wandering eyes if the monitor is visible during the shoot.
Someone also suggested that I have music playing in the garage. I have no idea why.

wouldn't that be counter to the whole idea of using this type of lighting ?

We setup a portrait set at the pool in our neighborhood. We asked that everyone bring a donation for a local children charity. Each family that brought a donation will receive a 5x7. Our neighborhood has about 90 houses. We collected over $200 in cash and over 30 items for the charity. It was a great success for the 1st year.
Now the neighborhood wants it for Christmas as well!
