Nature spots to visit?

We will be going to Sequioa National Forest, just wondering what other nature spots to visit? We will primarily be staying in LA, but don't mind driving.

There are several tidepools in the area, Joshua Tree National Park, Anza Borrego, the La Brea Tarpits, and our local mountains, to name a few.

How do you know when you spot a "tidepool"? We stayed in coronado this past summer and really didn't see any that we were aware of.
