Thanks, I really enjoyed reading about your trip :) I loved your pictures, especially the Gorilla ones, I have never seen a Gorilla there with a blanket! You take a nice picture too, smiling away!

Glad you had a great time.

I think you should enter "moon over Everest." I love that one!

Before I forget, I love :lovestruc the pic of the baby giraffe peaking out from behind the pole, too. It's TOO cute and unique, too! Okay now....

Great update, Paula! You got some great pics of Epcot, different ones, too. That stinks about no FP for Soarin'! I still haven't been on that ride, but the kids seat belts don't sound like a bad idea, hoping to check it out in just a few weeks, now. Bummer about the fish n' chips...sounds gross and I don't blame you one bit for not eating it!!! :headache:

Your roundabout way to MK sounded great and relaxing. Glad you got to check out a few of the favorites while there and found a tshirt you liked. You'll have to post a pic for us!!!

Looking forward to the next update...:surfweb:

Hi Paula! :wave2:

I LOVE your report! I'm subbing and taking my time- I just found ya so I've only finished Day 1.

I dream of going solo one day.... I'm a natural loner so I think I'd do great! I totally understand about getting sad during the parade though. I went to Disneyland w/just DD in '06 and spent the whole time wishing DH and DS were there!

Help me out friends!!!

The next photo contest topic is AK!! Which of the photos that I posted should I enter??? I also have these Faves (they're from my Feb trip)

I'm thinking either the "moon over Everest" one or the DeVine one... but I'd like some opinions!!

Thanks!!

I like the moon over Everest, too. But, heck - they're all good!

250 points was smart. Your kids are young and you will appreciate the 2BR's because of the room and the ability for your kids to bring a friend if you desire. I recommend the "bringing of friends" when the kids get older and get into their teenage hormones and sleep-wake cycles.

I think you should use one of the gorillas from part 1. I really like the 1sst one, but the other gorilla's butt is in the pic. My fav is the one of the gorilla & his blanket. It is so unique.

Hey Paula. Another great few posts!! It took me a while to catch up. I started working for JCPenny, for the holiday, EARLY in the morning. So if I sit down to read, I get sleepy. Anyway, to answer your photo question, I LOVE the one with "Mufasa", king of the jungle, sitting up on the hill. I've never seen him that well. I know he wasn't a choice, but I love that picture. So magestic.

Oh they're ALL up for being the one picked!! I still can't decide! I like the lion one too:goodvibes I did submit the Moon over Everest one to allearsnet for their photo of the week thing.... but haven't heard nothing yet:confused3

The only reason that I'm leaning toward the moon one... is it's different. I expect there will be a lot of VERY GOOD animal pics submitted, but not so many nitetime ones:rolleyes1

OH My!! I can't believe that this is my last 'trip' chapter already!! I have plans for another 1-2 chapters yet, but the actual trip will be over:sad1:
So don't go away....!!!

After my spin on HM... I noticed it was getting close to 8:00...Spectro Time. I wasn't really feeling it though. I was feeling hungry...again (darned slimy fish!) I swear, now that I'm looking back at my trip journal, all I did today is eat! Anyhoo, I went into my new fave CS place, Columbia Harbor House.
I had the Chicken Nuggets and Apples. I got a seat upstairs, near the window, so I was able to see the parade. After my late dinner and watching part (not all) of the parade from my window... I scooted back over to Fantasyland. I figured that since the parade wasn't over yet, the lines may have let up.

I walked onto It's a Small World. Yes the images that I have created in my head about that ride since reading Kingdom Keepers certainly makes IASW much more exciting!!! Creepy Little Dolls!!!

This time, instead of heckling the ride with my family, I actually really looked around. I never noticed that there are nearly as many ANIMAL dolls as PEOPLE dolls... and they are OH SO ADORABLE!! I really wished, I hadn't made that promise to myself... 'no pics on the rides/shows'!! I'm looking at IASW as a psychadellic safari on my next trip:goodvibes

Next stop, Snow White. I didn't notics any drastic differences from the rehab, but everything was nice and fresh. After my Scary Adventure... I looked around the shop then a pin kiosk. I bought a soda to sip and found a seat near Dumbo to watch Wishes. I like watching Wishes from Fantasyland. I like how the fireworks seem SO BIG and surreal from there, as opposed to how they appear when watching from the hub. The very first time I took my kids to see Wishes... we watched from fantasyland too. Well, Wishes made me cry. I probably would have looked like an idiot (if anyone was looking at me, instead of the sky), sitting there all by myself, in the middle of one of the greatest firework shows on earth, crying like a little baby!

I managed to pull myself together by the time Wishes was over and headed toward Splash Mountain. I thought I'd see if I could use my magic fastpass. I almost skipped it, because I HATE to walk around in soggy bottoms, but went anyway, against my better judgement. :thumbsup2 Super FP worked and I got right on. The ride stopped a couple of times, but eventually we made it to the Briar Patch. I ended up just getting a little sprayed, not the serious 'I look like a drowned rat' soaking I've gotten before:laughing:

I left Splash, used my last magic FP for a final trip on BTMRR, then meandered thru frontierland to Adventureland. Took another cruise thru Pirates, and kept heading toward the front. I figured I'd do a little more shopping. My little toe was really hurting, but I figured I'd live.

As I approached the hub, I heard the Specto music.... Huh??? There was only 1 parade scheduled... BONUS!! I watched part of it from near the Liberty Bridge

http://pixiepics.smugmug.com/photos/358378005_QsMND-M.jpg

But after a little while, I was annoyed by the people standing near me...so I headed toward the front of the park anyway, via the little bridge by Crystal Palace. I could see the end of the parade from CP and got a couple of pics with the castle behind it.

http://pixiepics.smugmug.com/photos/411653020_CP28g-M.jpg

I worked my way up Main Street. I found a bobblehead Jack Skellington, for my 1 'boy' technician (he's like a little kid...he even sent me a list of purchases he wanted me to get for him from the Lego store!) Since I knew that he loved toys and Jack... it was a perfect gift:goodvibes I stopped in the confectionary to see what I culd pick up for my other 4 'girl' techs. i ended up getting an assortment of teas, coffees and lemonade sets. All my co-workers were happy with their little gifts, when I got back:thumbsup2

This is Jack and a coffee set... the lemonade/teas were the same idea, but I gave them away before I remembered to take a pic:lmao:

http://pixiepics.smugmug.com/photos/411653268_GnqX4-M.jpg

After my very busy day... 17hrs, 3 parks, and a DVC tour... I headed back to ASMu. It was a hair before 11 and NO ONE was at the bus stop... wierd, but nice:angel: I didn't wait long. It was a nice ride back. The family I had met on Weds (with Scuttle) were sitting near me, so we caught up with each other and I found out their trip had been wonderful so far. Poor Scuttle was beat, and slept on pappy's lap. I gave them some advice for dealing with the Toy Story maniacs, since that's where they were going in the morning, and wished them a wonderful remainder of their trip!! I stopped and refilled my mug and got some grapes to snack on while I packed up. Went to my room and packed up everything except my clothes for in the am and toiletries... it was a good thing I took that empty suitcase:rotfl:

I was tired, my 'dogs were barking' so to speak. I checked out my dogs, to take care of that sore toe... no wonder it was killing me. I had a big blister on the inside AND bottom of my piggy toe AND one on the next one! I took care of them, but they bothered me for a few days after I got home anyway.

ME picked me up at 8:25. The bus driver was full of trivia and was quite entertaining. I did not know that the ME busses are not staffed by WDW, and are contracted to Mears.:confused3 But that does help explain why some people have not always had the most magical experience.... even though, personally, I have no complaints. I ate breakfast at MCO. The flight to PGH was completely full, but uneventful. We landed to a 30 degree temp drop in PGH, compared to MCO... Brrrrrrr!!!!

I got to my house about 5pm. The girls were very excited to see me...but no more than I was to see all of them! DS was even there to welcome me home:scared1: Shocker...I know! Everyone loved their gifts... even DS put his in a drawer...instead of in a corner, so I think he liked his too:hug:

Thanks everyone for following along on my journey, I'm really glad you did:dance3: Coming up.... What I learned, will I do it again???

It is cute!!:cutie: You can find both of them in Camp Minnie Mickey. They're right along the main path as you head toward FOTLK..
I didn't get any pics from over there this time... cause I did FOTLK at night during EMH... so daisy was hard to see then.

Hi, Paula. I've been lurking on your trip report and loving it! I announced a few weeks ago that "I'm going to Disney World for my birthday in February even if I have to go by myself!" So far, it looks like I will be solo for the first half of my trip, then my DH will join.

I was getting nervous about the solo part--even tho I've done an afternoon or so solo on trips before (DH is not so much on Disney:confused3 ) I've never done it solo all the time. Your report has given me courage. I can do this! Did you say you were going to do a "pros/cons" post later about going solo? Looking forward to that if so.

Your pictures are beautiful, and it sounds like you had a great trip overall (sorry you were sick for part). Thank you for sharing!:flower3:

I just need to decide WHICH trip I'm going to PTR, or do you think I should just do them all and color code the entries:rotfl: Lets see... I have the July trip with DH and DS... both sorta unDisney, so I'll probably have some solo stuff in there..... I have the November trip, which the TR should be entertaining at least cause its the commandos (me, DD10, and DD7), the Newbies (DB, DSil, DN14, DN9), and the Nanna!! Hmmmm pretty good TR name.... I am bumping you to encourage you to write your exciting conclusion. Plus aren't you getting ready to go again with your family (or is that next year?)

hehehe!! I'm hard at work on the 'exciting conclusion' it'll be up sometime this weekend. I'm 'gram-sitting' til Sunday. My inlaws are going out of town, so someone needs to stay w/ DGram (94)!! Me and the girls volunteered, so we'll be there...and I'll have nothing to do but finish this bad boy:rolleyes1

I'm going down in July w/ DH and DS (lord help me!!)

and over thanksgiving '09 with the girls, my mom, my brother, Sil, and DN(15) and DN(10)...Lord REALLY help me on that one:rotfl:

I was crunching #s today...not even using fuzzy Disney math... but I discovered that I could make a trip down the 1st week of Feb... for a grand total of $370:woohoo: .... I'm currently working on DH to let me...wish me luck!!:wizard:

Wow! You have to go for that price! Are you an anual pass holder? Or does that price include a ticket too? That includes airfare? Holy cow!!! I wish my DH would send me by myself. :rolleyes1

Yeah - you need to show us that math. Would that be using your developer DVC points? You should go for it! I think going to Disney about every 4 months would be the perfect way to go! You never have to wait too long between trips! :mickeyjum

WOW!! That sounds too good to be true! And you're not even using fuzzy Disney math? Is this w/ the new promotion? Or AP discounts? Tell us your secret! ;)

Well I do have an AP.. that expires 2/6/09 So the idea is to go from 2/3 til 2/7.... so no tix

Use 4 nights w/ developer DVC points (I calculated that with the # points in July I'll have enough left for 4 nights in a SSR studio.

OK so room + tix= free

I found a Southwest roundtrip fare (with taxes and stuff included) for $189

+ throw in the DP for one $39x4 nights= $160

so that's only $350 for the ENTIRE trip including food!!! It's hard to resist!!

I could go even cheaper if I don't do the DDP... but since I'm not really paying for anything else... I figured why not:confused3

I'm really thinking I need to do it.... I'll have to use those 4 nights at some point b/c the developers points expire next November and can't be banked.

We are looking at 10 nights in July... DH really can't afford to take more time than that off to stretch it to 14 nights..... what to do what to do!!!!!

This TR has been more fun to write than I could have expected!! I have loved having all you around to keep me company all thru it. I especially enjoyed all the witty banter between the "chapters'!!

Is there a Witty Banter Only thread???? I need to find one for general chit chatting!!

Well I promised that I'd do a post about the pro's and cons of my Solo trip. I'm glad that it took me a month to get to this chapter... because honestly, the longer term effects of my trip are still coming to fruitition!

Well... I want to end this shindig on a HAPPY note... so I'll start with the CONS!!

1. No One to SHARE with!! no one there to share experiences with, to say 'Hey! did you SEE that???' or 'That was SO COOL!!' Also no one to share your snacks/meals with. (that COULD be a GOOD thing!!) I like the variety of treats by splitting them.

2. No one to direct what you do.... yes I wrote that as a CON!! I had several times that I was not bored per se...but restless. I had too MANY options, so I wandered a bit aimlessly because I couldn't decide what to do next.

3. Lack of Company. Even if you talk to the people waiting in line with you, or next to you at a show... there's no guarentee that you will. With a touring partner, you have a definate line buddy, that you know you like.

4. I find it easier to be silly...with a suport system!! Embarassing my kids/DH is more fun than the actual act of being goofy:rotfl2:

5. Eating alone at WDW...is not the same as eating alone at McDonalds. Not because the servers don't treat you fantastic... but because there are so few other SOLO diners!!! If you go out to eat at home by yourself... there's almost always a few more solo diners. At WDW... you're pretty much it. I felt more self conscious about it there than I ever do at home.

OK next post.... are the PROS!!!!!

Paula

OK now for the fun part!! The Pros!

1. No one to keep happy. I felt that it was a bit of a con to have to figure out what to do next all the time...but on the same note...it was nice to be able to change plans on a whim, and not worry about it's effect on anyone else!!

2. RELAX!! This is the FIRST vacation I EVER took that I came home RELAXED. REJUVINATED, and RESTED!!! There's always battles to waylay with the kids..and if I travel with DH, again, I worry about the effect on him if plans change, so I often don't get the rest/relaxtion I need.

3. Single Rider Lines!! Sure..it's not like I can't use them when I go with DH and DS who don't like the thrill rides, but if I hadn't done the solo, I'm not sure how I'd have felt about ditching them and riding (gulp) alone!

4. A newfound appreciation for my family.... yes it's true, absence makes the heart grow fonder. I had the opportunity to step back and really appricialte the joy they bring to me:lovestruc And the reverse is true too....I think that DH and all 3 kids really learned to appriciate what I do for them too:thumbsup2

5. Self Discovery. I learned a lot about...ME!! I was suprised to find out I'm a bit shy (thought I was past that back in the 3rd grade!). I really had to push myself outside my comfort zone to strike up conversations with strangers. I'm glad I did, because those moments really enhanced my whole trip. I also found that I can do stuff MYSELF!! I'm the enabler in my family...but there's always someone else there if I fall. I got myself on a plane, to the resort, got myself around all week, avoided an uncomfortable encounter at MK, and got home...safe and sound, all by myself. I am Paula...hear me roar!!

6. Its MUCH CHEAPER than taking the whole family!!

So after all that.... here's the big question... would I do it again?????

ABSOLUTELY!!!

I wouldn't want all my trips to be solo ones...I love the fun and joy of bringing the family.... but I also really enjoyed NOT having the arguements and meltdowns that go with it. When I first got home... I thought..hmmm that was a nice week, but I was not in a hurry to do it again. Since then, I've been thinking more and more how much I loved the fact that I FEEL GOOD again!! I feel less stressed at home and at work.... it's the feeling that you SHOULD get from a great vacation!! And a result that, as much as I've always enjoyed my WDW vacations... never was as obvious as it was after this one!

I'm seroiusly thinking of going back again in Feb...solo, just to decompress. It would be a shorter trip (4 nights instead of 5) but that would be enough.

A couple things I learned, that I will take with me to my NEXT SOLO trip:
1. Make some ADRs. I had too much unstructured time. Next time I will definately make more ADRs... at least 75% of my parks days anyway. My DHS day, for example... if I had a 5pm ADR, I wouldn't have gone back to the resort. I wasn't tired. But finding something to do for an hour wouldn't have been nearly as overwhelming as finding something for 3hrs til Fantasmic.

2. Sleep in. As a solo I cruised around the parks lickity split, could use the single rider lines, and was able eat and use the facilities very efficiently too. There was no need (even though the parks were busy) for me to make rope drop every day. So I'll sleep in several days.

3. Make sure I put my fellow Dissers phone #s in my phone correctly!! And carry a back up hard copy too:thumbsup2

4. No one cares what I'm doing... so i'll relax and do my thing. doesn't matter if it's eating at a TS or getting my pic with Mickey... I'll never see any of those other people again so who cares if they think i'm a nutter. Unless it's another Disser... I may see them again, but they'll understand:hug: so it's OK!

5. Do another just for grown up thing, Like a tour. if the kids aren't along it's the best time to indulge in something just for me that they can't do anyway.....(I'm thinking a pedi:confused3 on the next one)

Alright then Peeps!
I'm considering this TR..finished at this point... but I'm more than happy to continue the chatter:goodvibes And I'll see you all at my next PTR/TR... yep, there will be more;) Thanks again for reading and for posting!

Great finishing report!! I asked my DH tonight if he would "let me" go to WDW alone, and he said "do you want to go alone?" He said he would go to Mexico and I could go to Disney. :rotfl:
Here's hoping for a Feb trip. It's just hard to not take advantage of the cost of the whole thing. That is just crazy!! DO IT
I'm glad that you feel rejuvinated. I think every mom needs some of that. I probably wouldn't feel like such a psycho mom all of the time if I could get a Disney break every four months.

I'm still sad that you are done. I need a trip to Disney to cheer me up :lmao: Thank you for the list of pros and cons. I agree with a lot of them. Unfortunately, unless Rob is available, it looks like the majority of my future trips will be solo. No one in my family is that enthused and, well, being single there's no hubby or kids to bully into going. Hopefully, Rob's girlfriend remains understanding about our mutal obsession.

Anyway, I look forward to the future PTR's and TR's that should be rolling our way from your many, many future trips. (Sorry, that may be the jealousy talking.) Oh, and good luck with that phone number programming thing! Maybe we'll be there at the same time again some day and can actually meet!

Thanks Kristin!!! I think that to be better Mom's, maybe we should put ourseves 1st every once in a while.;) I've had so much more patience since I've been back... really, I don't think that being all stressed and frustrated and snappy was really being a 'good mom' anyway...even though I was doing what a good mom should be doing (working, cleaning, car pools, volunteer at school/activities, etc)

I liked your conclusion. I am sorry your trip report is over, but I'm sure you'll start a pre-trippie soon. I am afraid to start one, because I think it will jinx my mom and dad, no kids trip next month. I'm supersitious that way. 4 weeks to go! I'll take lots of SSR pics for you!

I hope you get a studio. I bet you will. If not all your dates come through, you could always wait list and make a backup reservation for what you're missing. I waited listed for Vero and it came through no problem. It's not like you are going during a holiday period. Fool around with your dates a bit, too. Have some alternate dates in mind when you call. You know - You have no choice but to go - you have to get your money's worth out of that AP. :rotfl:

Just checked the submissions and there seem to be a LOT of Everest at night pics. Dang! Whether it's posted or not though, the "baby giraffe peeking from behind the tree" picture is a real standout. He's just too cute for words.

OK now for the fun part!! The Pros!

I agree with all your pros. Many of my travels are done solo and I love the freedom of it. I can sleep all day if I want to, eat when I want to, etc. and if things aren't going right I don't have to worry about another person's reactions.

i love all the pins you bought, being a huge pin trader myself! :flower3:
we're going to disney in december, actually we're writing our pre-trip report right now!
it's our first ever report!
it's kind of hard and it took us forever to learn how to get the pictures up :sad2: , which btw, your pictures are beautiful! you have an eye for things that most people wouldn't think to take a picture of. very beautiful. i'll be reading more! :surfweb:

Thanks for posting stitcharoo!!! I've never traded any pins:scared1: I love to buy them though!!! I try to get one for whatever I did 'special' on the trip... my resort, the parties, special events, etc. I do have my fave characters too... Crush and Squirt of course!! I'll be over to your PTR directly! Thanks for the compliments on the photos... I'm getting a complex, I spend too much time on the photography threads, and then i feel like mine all stiink!! I hope that I can get better though, following their examples!

Thanks for a vicarious adventure, Paula. My appreciation of WDW is in its infancy so the thought of reading a TR seemed a bit fanatical to me even a few days ago. I truly enjoyed your writing and photographs; they are a great introduction to a new-to-me literary form. :-)

My last solo trip (not to WDW) was in 1985 -86 and your story reminded me of the competing feelings of independence, spontaneity, and apartness.

I hope to find myself standing in line next to you at WDW one of these days.

Great trip report, Paula! I kind of wish I was going alone on my next trip (all booked for January!). Almost got the chance to do it, then my DH decided he would go (he wants to go to the restaurants), and then my DSis decided she wanted to go, so the three of us are going, but at least I'm leaving my teenagers at home! :lmao: My son isn't interested so much anymore, and my DD is too busy in school, but she will go with me again sometime later.

Great report!! Looking forward to the next one!

Paula, so nice to finally meet you! I'm glad I got to see a pic of you, so now when Stacy asks me to look for a woman I've never met and I don't know what she's wearing in park of thousands of people, I have a littler better chance!

So I'm just getting to your Day 5 here, and I have to say, in addition to the beautiful wildlife pix, this is a gorgeous picture of DeVine! But really- what a job! What's the instructions for that gig?

"Put this on. Go slow so you don't fall down. And look beautiful!" :thumbsup2

She does all that well! ::yes::

Wow! I'm finally finished! And I really really enjoyed it! I stick w/my idea that I'd be a perfect candidate for a solo trip, and your pro and cons list helped w/that too!

Thanks so much for taking us along, and CONGRATS on the DVC purchase! That's my GOAL!!!!

Thanks for the great TR Paula, and I'm subbing for your next PTR.

Your list of pros and cons will be very helpful as I've already started a list of goals for my "someday" solo trip.

So nice to "meet" you!! I have wanted to take a solo trip for a very long time, so I'm reading all the Solo Trippies I can! Thanks for taking time to write it up!

I'm only on your first day, but can't wait to spend the evening reading the whole thing! You said you're not funny, or a great writer or something like that, but I think you're doing a fabulous job, and I'm so happy to be along for the ride with you!

Can't wait for more:goodvibes
