The Murphys are LIVE AGAIN!!!
Polynesian and Contemporary Resorts
October 21st-27th 2008
Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party 10/23
Haunted Pirate Cruise 10/26

CAST:
Myself - Erika - age 35, mother of 2 boys, I work part-time as a teacher, I'm completely WDW obsessed, and I've been a member of the DIS for about 7 years :) Favorite rides: Soarin', POC, HM, Buzz, Spaceship Earth Favorite snack: chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich from Main Street bakery :goodvibes

DH - Brendan - age 36, a great dad, works for ESPN radio, loves WDW almost as much as I do ;) Favorite rides: Space Mountain, RnR, ToT, Backlot Tour (why, I'll never know) Favorite snack: Turkey leg and Popcorn

DS - Nicholas - age 9, 4th grade, videogamer, DS, Wii, PS3, wants to someday work for Sony or Nintendo, loves Epcot, obsessed with Pokemon and Mario, loves the toy store in Japan, Favorites rides: loves POC, TT, EE, MS, SpM, BTMRR, we are still trying to talk him into doing RnR Favorite snack: loves the BIG pickles and a Coke to wash it down (yuck!:sad2:)

DS - Connor - age 7, 2nd/3rd grade, loves trains, reading, Wii, Pokemon, Pooh, loves MK, dream job would be designing new trains and monorails for WDW and then be the driver too :lmao: Favorites rides: Pooh, Small World, SpM, POC, HM, Buzz, TTA Favorite snack: ice cream and milk, he would love to own a cow! :rotfl:

It's hard to believe we are headed back to WDW again for the third time this year. :cool1: This is why APs are dangerous.... once you buy them you can't stop planning trips! I think we'll get at least one more trip in before they expire (March 2009) so really I feel like we get our money's worth... especially with AP room rates. :thumbsup2

So, we leave first thing Tuesday morning.... just 2 1/2 days left to pack! :woohoo:

If anyone has any questions about the Poly, CR, MNSSHP, the pirate cruise, or anything else feel free to go ahead and start posting your questions now. I'll try to log-in at least twice a day for updates and pictures. If you haven't seen one of our live reports before here are some you can check out:

Hi Erika! I'm so excited to share your adventure to Disney World right along with you. Makes me feel like I'm there too. :yay: I have to tell you that you are a bit of a celebrity in my house. We still have the "Fans Guide to Disney World" taped and my DD and I watch it a lot. It really gets us excited for our trip in December. Sometimes when I ask her what Disney show she wants to watch, she says "How about The Murphy's?". I thought you might get a kick out of that. :goodvibes

Here we are!!!! :) Sorry it's taken so long for me to get online and update the LIVE report! We checked in yesterday at the Poly and hit MK right away. So I didn't even bother signing on for the 24 hour internet... we were in Tokaleau (sp?) on the 3rd floor and the room was huge! We usually stay in the older buildings (Fiji, Samoa, etc) and you can really tell a huge difference with the newer building. The hallways were really wide and our room was huge too. I have pics to post later.

We hit MK around 2:00 PM and it was practically empty... we did Buzz, TTA, Small World, Haunted Mansion, all were walk ons. We left MK around 5:00 PM and headed back to the Poly to rest (we got up at 5:00 AM for an early flight so we were pretty worn out) and then had dinner at Narcoosee's at 7:55 PM.

I'll update more later about dinner, what we had, Hallowishes from the GF, etc, but we are running off to Epcot!!!!! :)

More later!!! :cool1:

Hooray!! It worked!!!! Ok, so we are on the epcot monorail...its a beautiful day, sunny with a cool breeze. We checked out of the Poly this morning around 10:00 AM and our room at the contemporary was already ready for us! We are on the 9th floor with an amazing view of MK. Our youngest son was in awe....we had to drag him off the balcony to come wirh us to epcot! LOL. :)

I think the extra cost of MK view is def worth the money, and I can't even imagine how awesome the fireworks will be from the balcony! :)

We had a great dinner last night at Narcoosee's ....dh and I booth had surf and turf...with deluxe dining we had calamari and shrimp appetizers. The kids had chicken soup appetizers ...oldest ds had the filet mignon, youngest ds had mickey roni and cheese. :)

The meal was awesome, especially with the window seat view of Hallowishes!

More to come! And pics too!!

A great day at Epcot!! :) got fast passes for Soarin and Test Track...also did Nemo and Mission Space with no wait. Had lunch at food court inside the Land with our counter service dining credits. Spent quite a bit of time in Innoventions, they've got some new stuff. Went over to the old worlds of wonder for some wine tasting (part of the food and wine festival) not bad for only being here about six hours. ;)

Dinner tonight at Chef Mickey's!!! :)

Ok, we are now back in our room. I'm using this free computer (which I am ashamed to say I didn't even know would be here!!) but it won't let me access photobucket or upload pics. :( So I'm probably not going to post the pics off my digital camera until we get back home. I hate to pay $10 a day to hook up my laptop when we can use this one for free. But I can continue to post pics from my blackberry so I'll try to take more.

Dinner at Chef Mickey's at 8:00 .... anybody have any questions??? :)

So far nobody has stopped us on this trip... sometimes we'll meet people who like the show but I guess it's getting pretty old now and I don't even think it shows anymore??? At least I haven't seen it on in a long time.

There are still construction walls up around Chef Mickey's and near the grab and go. But the seating is done, and the places where you pay are done. I didn't hear any construction noise behind the walls. They run to the left of the walkway where you get your picture taken with the big plate. ;)

Just had dinner at Chef Mickey's, food was so-so, but the character interaction was awesome! All the characters spent a lot of time with the kids and we got tons of pics. :thumbsup2 It's a very noisy and chaotic place with tons of crying babies and toddlers, but we loved it. :lovestruc Mickey was great. We got an awesome family pic with him.

DH and the kids are down at the arcade... my boys think they've died and gone to heaven... we may never get them off Mario Kart. ;) The view of MK at night is amazing. Words cannot describe how wonderful it is. The castle is breathtaking from this view. We are just two rooms down from the end of the hall so we're very close. I'll post all the pics as soon as I can.

Questions???

Contempo grab and go

TigrLvsPooh
10-23-2008, 03:17 PM
I talked to a lady here at the CR about the grab and go. She said they hit some "unexpected problems" which has delayed the construction progress. She said it should be open in a "few months"... but I'm not sure if that is accurate. She said it would be exactly like Captain Cook's... you'll order from a computer and be given a pager, when it goes off you return to get your meal. She said the menu is really a huge improvement and will offer a lot of great counter service meal choices. But as to when that will happen it's hard to tell. :(

I did witness hardhats coming and going from the chef mickey's side where they are adding on... but everything on the new grab and go side is at a standstill from what I can tell. Nothing going on over there. Maybe it has something to do with being underneath the monorail track? I don't know. :confused3

We are resting in the room now... Kona Cafe at 5:00 then MNSSHP after! :cool1:

There haven't been any crowds since we've been here. :) We overheard a CM tonight at MNSSHP say they only sold 14,000 tickets... all rides were walk-ons. It was easy to find spots for the parades and fireworks, candy lines weren't bad at all. I assume crowds will pick up for the weekend... I'll report back tomorrow to let you guys know. :)

After spending the day at the studios we came back to the CR for a break and to get ready for MNSSHP. Dinner was at the Kona Cafe and it was great as always. DH and I both got the teriyaki new york strip steak... sticky wings appetizer... kilaleua torte for dessert! YUMMMM :cloud9:

We made it over to MK around 6:40 which was perfect timing to await the festivities. We started back in Toon Town and did all the candy stops to Tomorrowland... then Buzz, TTA, over to Fantasyland, Pooh, Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain, Pirates, everything was a walk-on. ;)

Headed to the hub for fireworks and parade... around 10:30 it started POURING rain :scared1: so we watched the parade from Main Street and then headed out the exit. Took the monorail back to the CR and got to bed around 11:40. ;)

Now this morning it's raining :( and supposed to rain all day. :(

We have Crystal Palace breakfast in just a few minutes so we're running off now! I'll update more later. Ohana dinner tonight.... EMH's at Epcot. Let's hope the rain can stop!!! :scared:

Don't forget you can also spend $20.00 and get 1000 points.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but why buy 1000 for $20, when it was 600 for $10? Wouldnt that mean buying 2 $10's would get 1200, when a $20 would only get 1000?? :confused3 Or that must be some 'new math' :lmao:

Was room clean and how was the location (in proximity to GCH and TTA)? We are also considering Fuji and I noticed that you stated in the past, you stayed there. Please share your thoughts on Fuji and Tokelau. I would appreciate it.

Loving the live report!!! Thanks for taking the time to write.

Are you making it to rope drop this morning for AK? I can't wait to hear about Teppan Edo we haven't been yet so I'm always interested in reviews! :) Hope the weather is nicer today!

We didn't make it! :lmao: We actually just woke up and now we're thinking we'll switch AK to tomorrow and just hit DTD today. The kids have been wanting to eat at the T-Rex Cafe and see Legoland. Plus it's supposed to rain all day again. :( So we're heading to DTD, then back later this afternoon to regroup before going to Epcot for dinner at Teppen Edo. ;)

Now that we've done Fiji, Samoa, Hawaii, and Tokelau I feel I have a better understanding of why some people request Tokelau. The room was HUGE, super spacious with lots of extra room for all the kids' stuff. The only downside was the view, because you can't see the lagoon, at least not from where we were, so if view is important to you then you might prefer a different location. From Fiji we could easily see the marina, volcano pool, lagoon, the CR, and from Samoa we could of course see the volcano pool, lagoon, the GF, and part of the EWP, so those buildings would win out for view. ;) Of course Hawaii was awesome, but that's a whole different catagory. As for the TTC, yes it was closer. But we don't really use the TTC a lot when we're staying at the Poly, only when we go to Epcot. For MK we take the boat and for the studios and AK we take the bus. :)

Any other questions about Poly, CR, WDW, etc, let me have em!!! :woohoo:

Thank you so much for posting that information.

I wanted to update you on construction. Yesterday they brought in a bunch of cabinets to install in the new grab and go. Probably for chips and snacks, etc. So there was a lot of noise and progress ... so that's a good sign! :)

Ok, whoever designed the bathrooms in this resort was either an alien, or someone who never shaves, puts on makeup, curls their hair, takes out contact lenses, or has kids. :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2:

Seriously folks, ZERO counter space. No counter actually. Just these horrible, giant, zero entry type sinks that don't even wash the toothpaste spit down. They need to take them out... just some regular sinks with a COUNTER would work fine.

Talked to several CM's and they are "not at liberty to discuss" what happened at DTD this morning! :( hope it wasn't a death or anything too horrible. If anyone knows what happened let me know.

We ate at T-Rex Cafe for lunch and did a bunch of shopping. Had Ghiardelli and now we're on the bus headed back to the CR for swimming! :)

If you check out in the theme parks area, I guess someone took a bus driver hostage, and made them drive TO DTD. It was a mears tour bus is what the article says ATM, with a bathroom in it.

It was pretty awesome. :) I can't wait to post my pics! :cloud9:

After being here at the CR for a few days I think I can safely say it's not one of my favorite resorts. The view from the balcony is AMAZING, there is no doubt about that, but I really have several things on my list of dislikes... mainly the bathroom design, the pool area, the grab and go (which will get better soon), and the overall theme of the resort. :rolleyes1 Sorry to say. It feels to "conventiony" to me. The rooms are nice, and we've had great mousekeeping, but I much prefer the "vacation" feeling of the Poly or the BC. I want to feel like I'm in Florida... I want an awesome pool area, and a resort theme that feels like I'm not in a Hilton near the airport. :rotfl: (sorry about that CR fans!!!) On the other hand, my kids LOVE this place, youngest DS says it's his favorite resort out of them all... probably mostly because of the monorail and the view. He gets the biggest kick out of seeing the MK train go around the park, and watching the monorails coming and going. So there is good and bad. If they can revamp the pool area, switch out the bathroom sinks, and get the grab and go up and running then this place would really move up my list. ;)

Tomorrow is our last full day, we're heading to AK since we didn't make it this morning, then dinner is at Cape May followed by the Haunted Pirate Cruise for the kids from the Poly. :thumbsup2 Monday we have a late flight, so we'll probably go back to the parks one more time... I'm thinking MK or Epcot.

See you all later!!! :woohoo:

When I told DH about the DTD incident, he sad "sounds like something you'd do", (not that I am a gunman, never have even touched one, just that I love shoping in DTD, and not that we think it is funny of course.) Thanks dear... I am surpried they let you get off the busses though.

We really enjoyed it! :) It's very, very similar to Rainforest, just with Dinosaurs. But we all agreed it's more entertaining, there are a lot more "characters" and the meteor showers that come are cool. They have a "dig site" for kids to play in while you wait for a table. Food is almost the same as Rainforest... DH had a steak sandwich, I had chicken salad on a croissant, oldest DS had fried shrimp, youngest had corndog nuggets. They have a Build A Dino (Build A Bear) and a large gift shop. The boys got some really neat tshirts. I'd say it's definitely a must see, especially if your kids like dinos.

OMGosh you guys I am sooooo sorry I totally abandoned this trip report!!! :sad1: :scared:  :guilty: :sad2:  It's a long story but basically the short verison is... youngest DS got sick on Sunday, throwing up and all the yucky stuff that goes along with it, so I ended up sitting in the room with him most of the day...

Then Monday we ended up not flying home, we spent the night in the Hyatt hotel inside the airport and didn't go until Tuesday morning. So the boys missed another day of school. Which resulted in them missing some important tests and having even MORE makeup homework to do. So the last few days we have been struggling to get them caught up on school work, also DH and I had to jump back into work, and somehow also unpack and do laundry... oh, and get ready for HALLOWEEN!!!!! :wizard:

So anyway, we're finally settled back down from vacation and back to normal... somewhat. ;) The boys are soooo excited for Halloween tonight, I have a million things to do this afternoon to get ready. But if anyone has anymore questions about our trip feel free to ask away. :thumbsup2 Here are some final thoughts:

Contemporary = probably won't stay there again, unless maybe to try the new Bay Lake Tower. We just didn't find the hotel had the "vacation" feeling we wanted. We didn't like the pool, the layout of the bathroom is terrible, the quick service was horrid (but hopefully will get better when the new place opens) However, as I said before, the view from the balcony was AMAZING, the castle right there... the DREAM LIGHTS were totally incredible... Wishes from the balcony, like a DREAM... but that isn't enough to bring us back for the price we had to pay for the MK tower view. :sad2: Way too expensive for what you get. Also we found the front desk to be incredibly rude on two occasions. At check-in and again on our last day. I won't bore you with the miserable story of that! But mousekeeping was very good.

Dining Plan = Ugh, everytime we do it I say never again, we all eat way too much and feel sick by the end of the week. I'm not sure it's even a good deal for the price anymore... the gratuity is the killer, even though your meals are covered you still have to pay $40-50 on top of it for dinner. And if we didn't have to do a sitdown every night we probably wouldn't, so in the long run we probably spend more on food. Or pretty close to the same.

MNSSHP = Fun, fun, fun, loved the parade, LOVED Hallowishes, even bought the CD and the kids have been listening to it everyday. :) Definitely worth the money, and we'll definitely do it again.

Haunted Pirate Cruise = I forgot to report on this! The boys had a BLAST! :) But I have to say it was pretty chaotic and unorganized. It took a long time to get every child checked-in, picture made, etc, and then the lady kept asking them over and over to use the bathroom before they left so by the time we went through all that the boat left about 20 minutes late. And they didn't add on any extra time at the end to make-up for the late start. So that felt kind of like a rip-off. :sad2: But the boys really enjoyed it... I've got some cute pictures to post! :) They had tons of stories to tell when they got back... and they got pirate mickey ears and a bag of treats. I think it was worth the money... and all the parents enjoyed a few "beverages" in the Tambu Lounge while they were gone. :) :thumbsup2 :goodvibes

Hmmmm... what else am I forgetting to tell you.... well, I guess that's all for now! I'll be back later with more PICTURES!!!! :cool2:

WHAT?!?!?

Castle lights already? I was there 10/16-10/20, we only went to MK for MNSSHP. Did I miss my chance to see the castle lights? UGH!!!!!!!!!

Erika, I really enjoy your live reports. Too funny that you didn't know you had free internet in the CR rooms. I would love to stay in a MK view room, but like you I don't think I would like the decor either.

Thanks for your great report, your boys are too cute. Bummer about the homework though.

The park wasn't open when they came on. In fact the park had closed at 8:00 PM that night. We just happened to be out on our balcony when the Dream Lights came on. It might have been a private party? Or a wedding? Or maybe they were just testing them out? I'm not sure. But they were INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :lovestruc

Loved your live report even tho I didn't catch it til today :lmao: Beautiful pics esp off the balcony and the video of Wishes was awesome!

I have never wanted to stay at the CR just because of how it looks from the outside and the rooms are too modern but the view from the Tower can't be beat (at least the view you got).

I'm sorry that your son got sick on the last day :sad1: but maybe on a good note no one got sick earlier in the trip. That's sort of a worry I have for our upcoming trip in December. I can't wait to see the Castle lights when we're there - that was neat that you got a preview!

Thank you, that makes me feel better. The lights are amazing, I went there on our last night just to see the lights. I think I was politely asked to leave, I just couldn't pull myself away. They are breathtakingly beautiful. Maybe next year. Sorry your son got sick, that is never a good way to spend a day of vacation. Thank you again for the great live report.

Hey Erika,

That was us at Epcot that night (the 24th) that got starstruck by meeting the famous Murphy's from Fan's Guide!

Sorry your son got sick, what a huge bummer. And I hear you on getting caught up, its been two weeks and I still feel out of sorts!

And I am never doing the DDP again either! Once they added that tip in, it was a no go for us. And when your boys become adults at age 10, its even less of a good deal. Get the Tables in Wonderland if you haven't already! Also hear you on the AP's, we did four trips to WDW on ours this year, and so help me, I am not renewing them!

It was great to meet you!

Also, I met a fellow DISer tonight at Epcot! :thumbsup2 Amy&Dan... they were coming in the entrance at the same time we were! Great meeting you guys!!! :goodvibes

Yep that was us! We really enjoyed meeting you guys too. I knew from your last trip report you guys would be there the same time as us and I told dd we might see you, she was so excited when we really did. Too funny, I mean as crowded as Epcot was that night, that we would see you at the turnstiles. :goodvibes

I just read the whole report and realized we were at MNSSHP the same night as you guys. That rain was such a bummer. But I must say, compared to last year (we did 10/30/07) it was much better. That night, it literally poured from about 9:00 all the way through. The walkways were completed flooded, the second parade was postponed around an hour and it was miserable. So this year's wasn't as bad but still a bummer. My son was Santa Claus at this year's party, so if you saw a tall, skinny Santa, that was us!

Erika --

I just now saw this incredible thread and read the entire thing. Love your pictures, your descriptions, your adorable family, and, in fact, everything! Thanks a mil for posting.

Ever since they redid the rooms at CR, we've had zero desire to stay there. I always thought it'd be so cool if the rooms there looked like fantasy rooms on a spaceship or another planet or were incredibly futuristic. But, sadly, they took away even the old not-so-bad Kennedy-era feel and replaced it with an ordinary upscale hotel. Very disappointing.

I see from your signature that you've stayed at many many WDW resorts, so I'm just going to ask: Do you have a favorite? and why?

Thanks so much. I hope you and your family had a great holiday.

Hi Erika:wave: Glad I had a chance to see this one! I did not know you had gone back again since July! I know what you mean when you say AP's are dangerous, we leave for another trip in about 5 hours:rotfl: and we bought DVC. The Mouse has us hooked!

Talk to ya later,

Super.
