We crossed the border last weekend by car with my father-in-law. We have passports, he does not. The US border official cautioned us that he would need a passport for land crossings in ten months.

Your trip would appear to be after the deadline, so, you will need passports. (assuming you mean November 2009)

If the deadline causes a backlog like the flying deadline did, you may want to get them sooner than later.

Also, if an emergency or other issue came up, I would not want to have my flight options reduced if I had to get back to Canada in a hurry.

As CDNCA indicated, if you are travelling in Nov. of 2009 you will require a passport as indicated here. (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html) The advice of getting it earlier rather than later is excellent advice as the backlog & lines created when only flyers were getting their passports was incredible. I can only imagine what it will be like when the balance of Canadians get them. bdoyledimou's advice that you do not require a passport only applies until May 31, 2009 and does not allow for an emergency flight to Canada.

So, in short, you don't need passports to fly from Detroit but you will need them to cross by land into the US to get to the airport. So, yes, you will need them.

Yes.. by "Next November" i assumed Nov 2008..

Passports are worth the expense, and right now it seems to be a short wait... why wait for the long stressful emergency run around situations?!!?!
