So we know that it all started with a mouse………
BUT this story started with a browsing session on the Adventures by Disney website. I was drooling over all the trips when I found the Backstage Magic trip which is the ultimate trip for a Disney geek like myself. So after much discussion with my husband & much explaining of how so many of the experiences are so unique that there is no way that you can arrange them on your own, I called to book the trip on January 29, 2008. We wanted to go on an adult only adventure since we don’t have any kids, so we decided on the Dec 9-14th adult only trip. At this point, we also decided to add at least one night so we could stay at Disneyland on Sunday to have more time to explore the parks. Later on, we also added on Monday the 15th as well. We are using DVC points to stay the 2 extra nights at the Grand Californian. We also decided to fly out ahead of time so we can adjust to the time difference & to see another part of California. We are flying out on Saturday Dec 6th to San Diego & spending the 3 nights before the Adventure starts there. I have been to California once but my husband has never been. On my trip to California in 2001, we traveled to Disneyland but were just there for a day & a half. I was with my Mom & 2 brothers in their late teens, so I did not get to really soak up Walt’s original park the way I wanted to that time around, so I am looking very forward to changing all that in December. We also visited San Diego on that trip & I think it is a beautiful city & it’s closer to LA/Hollywood where our adventure will be starting that some of the other places in California that we would like to visit eventually.
So now we are closing in on our trip………we have reached 50 days until we leave.
Yesterday when we got home, there was a box on our front porch from Adventures by Disney. I was so excited because now it seems real.
Here are some pictures of the box & the contents.
The box & the messenger bags.....

We are so ready for this trip & excited about so many different parts of this adventure.
Up next……Why the Backstage Magic tour & Our Disney histories

Adventures by Disney offers lots of very cool trips with special things to do that you cannot arrange on your own. This is the main reason why we have chosen this trip. Backstage Magic is a tour that encompasses Hollywood & Disneyland.
The itinerary for the trip looks like this & I will highlight the parts that sold this trip to me.
Day 1-Dec 9th “It all started with a mouse”
Arrive Hollywood California to stay at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel
Welcome dinner
Day 2-Dec 10th “Hooray for Hollywood”
Behind the scenes at the El Capitan Theatre
Backstage at Jimmy Kimmel Live
JIM HENSON COMPANY STUDIO TOUR & LUNCH
Dinner & evening on your own in Hollywood
Day 3-Dec 11th “Making the Magic”
Visit Walt Disney Imagineering
Walt Disney studios tour & lunch
Drive to Disneyland & check in at Disney’s grand Californian hotel
Welcome reception & dinner at Hook’s Pointe
Evening on your own in Disneyland
Day 4-Dec 12th “Walt’s world”
Character breakfast at plaza inn
Exclusive backstage tour of Disneyland park
Lunch at Café Orleans
**************VISIT WALT DISNEY’S APARTMENT*********************
Afternoon, dinner & evening on your own in Disneyland
Day 5-Dec 13th “Behind the orange grove”
Breakfast at Goofy’s kitchen
Behind the scenes tour of California adventure park
Lunch & afternoon on your own
Farewell dinner & surprise
Day 6-Dec 14th “Now’s it’s time to say Goodbye”
Goodbye breakfast at Storyteller’s Cafe
As you can see this is a very special tour with lots of activities that you cannot arrange on your own. I cannot believe we will be able to visit Imagineering & get to see where the Magic for the theme parks all begins. I once stood outside on the sidewalk & took pictures of the Walt Disney Studios longing to be able to go in & look around, but there was a guard there & I couldn’t. BUT now I will be able to see where Walt & the 9 Old Men created the wonderful stories that I grew up with as a child & still cherish as an adult. Getting to see Walt Disney’s private apartment where he spent his time at Disneyland is going to be incredible & full of so much history & nostalgia that I know I am going to be overwhelmed with emotion.
Which will lead us to the next part of our story………….Our Disney History.

Since I haven’t done so yet, I guess I should introduce you to the cast of characters.
My name is Melanie & yes I am a Disney geek & have been for some time. But I don’t want help for my problem because it is a fun problem to have. I am 40 for now, about to be 41 on Halloween. I am a registered nurse. I was a pediatric oncology nurse for 10 years & now am working in primary care. I love to read, listen to music & travel.
Here I am last year at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party since it's almost Halloween. :hmghost:

My husbands name is Eric. He is 37 for now, about to be 38 on Oct 24th. He works in a bank as a VP. He loves to run, is learning to play the electric guitar & loves to travel as well.
Here he is last year at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party

We have been married for 5 years & together for 8 years. This trip is like a belated 5 year anniversary celebration as we wanted to do the adults only trip & the December one worked the best for us even though our anniversary is in August. We do not have any kids, but do have a furry baby named Bella who is a 5 year old Minature Pinscher that we love & spoil.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_1132.jpg
The other character needs a little back story.
Back in 2006 when we went on our 1st Disney cruise together, I decided to bring along a mascot/companion & place him in some of our pictures for fun. Here is our buddy from that trip-Sorcerer Mickey on Castaway Cay.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_2290.jpg
So this has kind of become a tradition now & this little guy joined us last year on our 7 night Halloween cruise because of course there be pirates in the Caribbean.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_0580.jpg
I will reveal this years travel companion later as I think it is perfect for this trip, but a girl has to have some secrets.
Next up……………The origins of a Disney obsession.

Hi Melanie. I am very excited for you. I think you have a pretty good idea as to why. There will be moments when you're on the backlot when you'll have to pinch yourself because you're actually on the backlot. You will also never see pictures of the backlot the same way again. I was watching the Leslie Iwerks documentary about Pixar not long ago and started to get excited when they showed the animation building(and I mean the original one where the Nine Old Men worked their magic).
A friend on another forum commented that I must have been like a kid in a candy store on the backlot. Well that's partially true, but most kids don't really care about the history of candy and how it's created. This will be a singular Disney experience that you will always treasure. If you get some time on Legends Plaza, look around and find the Legends who mean the most to you. And make sure you have a good camera, lots of memory cards or film, and plenty of batteries.

Oh, you should order the Adventures by Disney info packet. They send this great book with all the trips in it. I am drooling over so many of them, but I think this will be the perfect 1st one for us to do. So glad you are joining me.

I am so glad you are here & ready to share this experience with me as your trip reports have given me many hours of enjoyment.:goodvibes I sooo cannot wait to see all the things that we are going to see. I think I am most excited about Imagineering & the Studios (your pictures of the Studios really made me excited). I plan on looking for my favorites in the plaza & looking for the surprises on the statue that you mentioned. I can't wait.
I will have the Disney history up tomorrow.:thumbsup2

I'm looking forward to learning about your Disney history. It adds a new level to the report to know of the writer's Disney history and why they love it so much. As you'll soon learn, reading others reports about the Studios reminds you of how unique your own visit was.

I can remember being 4 years old watching the Wonderful World of Disney with my grandparents on Sunday night. One episode stands out prominently in my mind & that was one that included scenes from Disneyland. It showed parts of Great Moment with Mr. Lincoln & some of the scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean. I remember being fascinated & wanting to go visit that magical place. We watched every Sunday night while Walt showed all kinds of wonderful stories. I guess this is where my fascination with him started. I can remember getting a biography at the library when I was in the 3rd grade & doing a book report on Walt. At one point, there was a Disney art show that came to town. Disney artist Bill Justice was going to be there & somehow I talked my sometimes very grouchy grandfather into taking me to this event. I have a much cherished drawing of Snow White which Bill Justice did for me from that day.
Here's is that drawing.....
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_2943.jpg
I couldn’t quite talk my Grandfather into buying me a cel, but I did get a book. I also remember going to see so many Disney movies with my Mom which was always so fun. Another good memory is going to see Disney on Ice & having Snow White come right over to us & getting my picture made with her.
Not the best picture of either one of us, but a great memory for me.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/1973-SnowWhite.jpg
I FINALLY got to go to Walt Disney World after much begging & pleading in 1979.
Excuse the weird hat..........:confused3
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/1979.jpg
It was a most wonderful day & I can remember being so excited that I almost couldn’t maintain myself. I remember very vividly my first glimpse of Cinderella’s castle & watching the Main Street Electrical Parade which totally amazed & delighted me. I can hear that music to this day & still be taken back to that summer night in 1979 immediately. I carried this fascination forward even in high school when I did a term paper on Walt Disney World & how it was built. And, it remains the same today. I have always been fascinated with Walt, his theme parks & his movies. I had multiple trips to WDW after that first one in 1979. We went back as a family around 1984 & that was the first trip for both my baby brothers who were around 4 & 2 at the time.
I went back with a high school friend after we had started college in 1986.
I've always been fascinated with Mary Poppins even in topiarty form.:rotfl:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/1987.jpg
And I always loved this mural which is now gone.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/1987-mural.jpg
Went again in 1990 & 1992 with he who must not be named otherwise known as my first husband.
Celebrated graduating nursing school in 1995 with a trip to WDW. Went at Christmas time for the first time in 1997 when we saw the beautiful pink birthday cake castle.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/1997-PinkCastle.jpg
Went in 2000 for a conference with some girls from work & my best friend flew down at the end & we played together like 2 big kids.
In 2001, I went with my Mom & brothers to Disneyland but it was a very quick trip in which we spent about 1/2 a day in California Adventure & a most of a day in the Magic Kingdom. Not enough time to explore.
Here's my photo of Walt's light.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/2001-DisneylandFirestation.jpg
My husband shares my love of all things Disney, but is not quite as obsessed as I am. We have talked about watching the Wonderful World of Disney on TV as kids, but he did not share my passion & doesn’t have specific memories like I do. His love of going to Walt Disney World began more as an adult. He did visit when he was a young teenager in 1984 but he doesn’t have any memories that particularly stick out in his mind. All he can really tell me is they went to Magic Kingdom & EPCOT. He is very wonderful about indulging me in my Disney obsession & he enjoys it almost as much as I do now.
We took our first trip to WDW together in December of 2002 about 9 months before we got married. He got to experience me in my full Disney sappiness when I had a little misty eyed moment not too long after our first day at the Magic Kingdom watching the show in front of Cindy’s castle AND he still married me.

So yesterday morning, my DH sent me an email asking me what time we needed to check in on Tues Dec the 9th in order not to miss anything for the ABD trip. :scared1:.:faint: :scared: I immediately knew something was wrong. So over lunch yesterday, we discussed that we might need to alter the trip a bit because of a computer conversion that is going on at his work. I’m not going to bore you with the gory details, but if we cut out the San Diego portion of the trip & do not fly out until Monday afternoon, then he will feel better about tying up any loose ends over the weekend & on Monday. So, this will make it easier for him to enjoy the trip & not think about work. Now since this is a trip of a lifetime, I certainly don’t want him distracted & grumpy because that would really hamper my being able to enjoy all these once in a lifetime experiences, so even though I really didn’t want to ditch San Diego it is the best decision. I was most disappointed that we were going to miss out on the things we were going to see on the drive from San Diego (where I have been before) to Hollywood. BUT after some thought, my wonderful DH who had originally been thinking of flying out Tuesday morning when the ABD begins that afternoon, thought it might be better to fly out Monday night & then we could rent a car & see a few of the things we really wanted to see that morning before the tour starts. Great idea!!!!!! I knew I married him for a reason.:love2:
So this morning he called & changed our flight out to Monday afternoon. I cancelled the rental car that we had booked for San Diego. I also called Adventures by Disney to see if we can add on the night before the trip through them at the Renaissance Hollywood which would mean they would pick us up from the airport Monday night & also that we would get to say in the same room for the entire time there. They will have to check on the availability & will call me back, but she sounded pretty confident that we could do this. If not, I will just book a room at the Renaissance on-line & then figure out a way to get us from LAX to the hotel. Hopefully, we will hear from them today or tomorrow, but she said it could take up to a week for them to get back to me. I also reserved us a car from Hertz that has a desk right in the hotel for Tuesday.
So even though the plans they are a changin’ I am still a happy girl that is going to have the trip of a lifetime.
Here are the new plans……..with ideas for free time added in.

where are walt's barn & ollie's depot?
Lunch ? Not sure where yet…would love to do Pink’s or In & Out Burger but neither are close to Griffith Park. I have started a thread for suggestions of where to eat close by.
3) See Griffith Park observatory for the planetarium show at 12:45
Drive back to hotel catching any cool sights along the way
you could always stop by pink's or in-n-out in hollywood before returning your rental that night
Wed Dec 10th
...
Dinner at Johnny Rockets or California Pizza Kitchen at Hollywood & Highland Center
also, if you like cream puffs, try beard papa's. i heard on yellowponchos mention there's one at the center. i've never tried that location but have had it at other locations. they fill the puff after you order so the puff isn't soggy. taaaaasty!
Friday Dec 12th
VIP tour of Disneyland
Afternoon/evening on our own
Dinner at Carnation Café?
i don't believe that carnation cafe serves dinner. maybe, you can have it for lunch on another day. i can't wait to try the loaded potato soup for my first time about a week before your visit.
also, have you read hyroguy's stickies? he has a lot of FANTASTIC info for visitors there. it's a piece of cake to park hop at dlr compared to wdw. Staying at gch will also make it easy to rest, change or whatever when needed.
Your plan sound so fun, even if you & your hubby needed to cancel SD. It's best to have a nice, happy, hubby with you on the trip. :cutie: Plus, like Disneygrl36 said, it's another reason to go back to CA.

I know I am so glad that things will still work out ok. I was just wanting to show him around San Diego because it's a beautiful city. Next time.
where are walt's barn & ollie's depot?
In Griffith park, where the railroad is

This is true. We are going to return the rental car after we are finished sight seeing & our adventure starts between 4 & 5pm, so maybe an afternoon snack.

That sounds yummy!!!! I'll make a note of it.

Hmmm guess I better come up with a different plan for that. I wanted the baked potato soup.

I am loving this so far!!!! It's going to be a great trip!
I have been on that carousel in Griffith Park so many times, I've lost count. My step-dad used to take me and my brother there on Sundays growing up. Ahem......I never knew that was the one that inspired Walt. :rolleyes1 I know, I know!!! I'm not worthy of the DIS boards. :rotfl:
I do have a suggestion for you though! While in Glendale grab lunch at Porto's Bakery. Their meat pies and potato balls are to die for! http://www.portosbakery.com/
They are on Brand, and in fact there is an In-n-Out not far from them either, so you can get the meat pies and some of their wonderful desserts to go, and then actually eat at In-n-Out.
These are some desserts from Portos. (They are from my June TR, but I'll take them down if you want me to.)
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/mommaU4/June%20trip%202008/DSCF4869.jpg
And the pies:
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/mommaU4/June%20trip%202008/DSCF4875.jpg
If you went from Forest Lawn to Portos it's about 2.5 miles and then from Portos to In-n-Out another half mile. http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Glendale+&1s=CA&1a=1712+S+Glendale+Ave&1z=91205&2c=Glendale&2s=CA&2a=315+North+Brand+Blvd&2z=91203#a/maps/l::1712+S+Glendale+Ave:Glendale:CA:91205-3320:US:34.125362:-118.253237:address:Los+Angeles+County/l::315+N+Brand+Blvd:Glendale:CA:91203-2303:US:34.15016:-118.255084:address:Los+Angeles+County/l::119+S+Brand+Blvd:Glendale:CA:91204-1307:US:34.145915:-118.255081:address:Los+Angeles+County/m:::::0:::::/io:1:::::f:EN:M:/e

Yeah Beth. :welcome: Glad to see you here & thanks for the shout out on your trippie. :goodvibes How awesome is it that you went to the same carousel that Walt took his daughters too & you have memories of it from growing up.:cloud9: I am sure some people would look at the things I want to do that morning before the tour starts & go :confused3 but my DIS board friends understand that love of Disney that drives us to want to seek out the places that meant something to Walt & formed the basis of the Disneyland & WDW that we know & love so well today.
Thanks for the suggestion on Porto's. That looks really yummy. I think that will become our lunch spot for sure. As long as I can call the meat pies something else...I posted this on MA piglet's trippie, but I will say that hearing meat pies just makes me think of Sweeney Todd a little too much :scared1:.
I really want to try the California Pizza Kitchen as well, so you have helped me with that decision as well. :thumbsup2

I think reading about a persons Disney history really adds to the trip & it was fun for me to go back & think about all those things that really make Disney special to me.
I am excited to see the El Capitan too. I have heard that Disney has done an outstanding job with the refurbishment. Bolt will be showing there while we are there & if we aren't too tired we might do that for our evening entertainment on Wed night.
Not sure about the celebrity photo's........depends on if we stumble upon any. I have heard that celebs go to DL all the time. I will keep my eyes peeled. And don't think I didn't try to figure out a way to get to Malibu to see where my Rick lives. :rotfl:

The El Capitan is a lot of fun. It's just a fun experience. When my life calms down and all deadlines are met, I'll get to writing about the El Capitan and both my experiences there. (I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to see Sleeping Beauty twice on the big screen since I was that close and I don't know if it will be shown on the big screen again and if I'd be able to go if it ever is).

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, my next post was supposed to be about what I have left to do for the trip..........but instead, I decided to introduce you to our new traveling companion for this trip. Remember Sorcerer Mickey & Pirate Mickey that came along before, well I knew we needed a new companion for photo ops on this trip & it needed to fit the spirit of the trip......so here they are without further ado....
Walt Disney & Mickey Mouse.....because "Let's not lose sight of one thing, that it all started with a mouse."
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4359.jpg
That is them in front of my spooky Disney Halloween house.
Here's a closer picture....
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4341.jpg
I think they are just perfect for this trip.
Now lest we forget someone who has also made multiple visits on my previous trip reports............Mr/Ms Potato Head depending on the day & the costume. I hope to bring back some new parts from our trip.
She wants to say she's ready for Halloween too.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4351.jpg
Here are my pumpkins.....
2 are fake plug ins & I carved the other two on Wednesday.

A close up of each.....
One in honor of Pirates pirate:

One in honor of :mickey: Excuse the lopsided Mickey heads, but I did them free hand.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4355.jpg
We watched Sleepy Hollow (the Johnny Depp version) last night to get us in the Halloween mood...that is kind of our Halloween movie tradition. I am off to watch Nightmare Before Christmas in a bit to help get me in the mood further.
We won't be home tonight to light the pumpkins or hand out candy. That's the thing about having a Halloween birthday. We are rarely home for Halloween.
We will go to see our neice & nephew dressed up before heading out for a nice birthday dinner made extra nice by the fact that a friend from high school & her hubby are in town & they are meeting us for dinner. :goodvibes
Everyone have a Spooky day.

Ok, so I have been wanting to find a couple of things to wear that are in the spirit of the trip.
I am currently bidding on this shirt on ebay to wear the day of the Jim Henson studio tour.....do you guys think it is too busy/ugly?
http://i1.ebayimg.com/02/i/001/09/54/c16f_1.JPG
I also want something for the trip that will be a reminder of visiting this special place, but don't think there is a shop there or anything.
So I am bidding on this on ebay as well. I thought I could add a banner to the back tire that says Jim Henson Studio Visit Dec 2008.
http://i16.ebayimg.com/03/i/001/17/00/10b2_1.JPG
And I've ordered this shirt to wear at the Magic Kingdom because I really want to try to get a picture with Julie Andrews horse on the carousel.
http://rlv.zcache.com/practically_perfect_shirt-p235097575492091178uayo_525.jpgI'm hoping that I can go to the carousel when we are in the MK early for our backstage tour because I am afraid it will be too hard to find it & get a picture once the park is open. I am going to ask the guides about it. Keep your fingers crossed for some pixiedust: for me for this wish.

Glad to get another thumbs up on the Muppets shirt. I will probably have to get a long sleeve t to put under it so I don't freeze.
The Mary Poppins shirt is from zazzle. Just go to search & put in Mary Poppins & it should come up. They have tons of different shirt styles & colors to pick from. I ordered it in a long sleeve t in pink.
A few months ago, Disneyland dedicated a horse on the carousel to Julie Andrews & she was there for the dedication. The horse has some special Mary Poppins accents. Go to youtube & you can probably find the ceremony & see her & the horse.
Thanks for the pixiedust: I have never really bid on anything on ebay. I usually have just gotten the buy it now option.

1. Call Nov 14th for Walk in Walt's Footsteps tour reservations
2. Arrange transportation back to LAX from Grand Californian since we are staying extra nights ABD doesn't do this for us
3. Go to Disney Visa & DVC websites to make sure I have the info for any discounts we can take advantage of at DL
4. Transfer points to Disney Visa Rewards Card
5. Print out all my tidbits of info that I have compiled into a word document & directions to the places we are going to visit the morning before the tour starts when we have the rental car
6. Make lists....packing list, don't forget list, address list for postcards & get postcard stamps
7. Get cards, candy & make xmas ornaments for ABD guides
8. Charge batteries & get all camera stuff together
9. Clean house & get the :dog: ready to go see Grandma & Grandpa
10. PACK!!!!!!!!!
11. Go on the Disney Lover's trip of a lifetime & have a BLAST
I think that covers most of the things left to do. I have all the other stuff-rental car, confirmations for tour, extra nights at Grand Californian, airline tickets, dining reservations done.
On the birthday present front.....
We received several Disney gift cards to spend on the trip.:woohoo:
And my sister in law got me a Gorillapod.............which will be cool to try out with the digital camera & maybe I can get some good night shots since it will help steady the camera.

I couldn't sleep this morning.:rotfl:
Today was the first class. I go back next Monday. It is 10am to 12 noon. I had to spend a bunch of money today for supplies, but it should be everything I need. I have wanted to take a class for a long time & finally getting to do so. I will try to come up with something cool to do next week & if it looks decent I will post a picture. :cake:

Great choices for must-try foods. You are just like me! Tigger tails are fabulous! My mouth is watering just thinking about that one! Everything you have for Cafe Orleans is exactly what we get. The Pommes Frites....YUMMY!!! The bread bowl....good stuff too. You will also enjoy Steakhouse 55. The food and service is excellent there. Don't forget a churro and a dole whip at the Tiki Room.

You should definitely consider the ABD Discovery Down Under. For us, it was a trip of a lifetime. I wanted to do a trip report for it, but I think writing a good TR is a talent and I happen to lack the magical TR gene or something. I did write a bit on the ABD board about my experience, but you will find with ABD, some things may be subject to circumstance and there are some unexpected surprises along the way and I would hate for anyone to go and be disappointed that they didn't experience something that we did. Also, my favorite parts of the trip were things I had not read about. The mystery is part of the fun. Since everything is so well-planned for you, you really don't need to know a lot and do a lot of research in order to enjoy the trip. It is the vacation-equivalent of floating down a lazy river. I didn't know how I would like relinquishing the reins, since I am the travel planner for my family, but honestly, it was wonderful!
Enjoy those pommes frites and tigger tails! I will be headed down for some myself in February!

I know I have concerns about traveling in a group & giving up control as well as I am a huge planner, but from all I have read I think it will be a great experience. Going places like Europe & Australia with ABD & not having to do all the arranging definetly sounds like heaven.

First the bad news.
I got the muppet shirt yesterday in the mail & it was tiny.I had failed to notice it was a juniors shirt because I was so excited to have found a muppets shirt. The ebay seller is kind enough to take it back so I mailed it back to her today as I couldn't even think about wearing it. I saw a few Muppets things at Walmart today too, but guess what they are Juniors as well..........don't they think grown up ladies like Kermit & Animal too?????
So, I think I am giving up my quest for a cool Muppets t shirt as I cannot find anything on-line that I like or doesn't cost an extra 10$ to ship.
Now on with the good news........
My Kermit ornament arrived today & it is sooooooooooo cute. Perfect.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4413.jpgI already added my banner to it.
The other good news is.......
I got mail from ABD today. It was just a confirmation for the pre-night stay I added on but still it was Disney mail.
Also thanks to a wonderful DISer I think I have found the perfect place for us to have lunch on the day we are going to have the rental car & go to see the sites. The food might not be as good as Porto's Beth, but it has a Walt connection. Going to keep this one under my hat as a girl has to keep some things secret.
In non-related news....
It's fall in Tennessee. See the pretty colors I see when I look out my kitchen window.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4399.jpg
And this is what my dog does while I DIS which she thinks is my way of ignoring her which she doesn't like.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4402.jpg
AND even further under there....she woke up as I walked in with the camera darn it.

Gotcha.
I always like to make my trip reports detailed, which can work against me in writing them since I try to write each chapter in one fell swoop. I want to finish this report up before I leave in less than a month, so that should motivate me.

I forgot in yesterday's update to mention that I called Grauman's Chinese theater because I really wanted to try to take a tour of it on our free time. They have tour every 1/2 hr during the day up until about 5pm & then every hour until 9pm, so I am excited that it looks like we can do this on our own time on Wednesday. :cool1:
So, to get me in the mood for the trip, I ordered some reading material that I thought would be fun & the books came today.
For Jim Henson Studios
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4419.jpg
For Disneyland
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4420.jpg
And while we are on the subject of books, I have a little obsession with Disney books as you may have figured out when I got so excited about the one on Disneyland art that I found at TJ Maxx. One of my Disney book shelves.....
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4426.jpg

I like those field guides to each park (I have those too on another bookshelf), but that Imagineering book is much more detailed about the process of imagineering. I highly recommend it.

:lmao:Ok, so you twisted my arm Melissa....I will put it here as a totally off-topic story.
So along with my Disney obsession that started at a very young age, my other obsession that started around age 13 was with Rick Springfield who in my humble opinion is one of the cutest & greatest Australians of all time.:thumbsup2 So, I found the music first unlike most fans of the time who found him on General Hospital first & then fell in love with him there as Dr Noah Drake. I do admit to watching though to get my Rick fix even back then. He was my first concert which my parents took me too at age 14 & stayed with me (good grief). I can remember being amazed to be in the same room with him. He was a tiny speck on a stage very far away. So all through my teens, I was a loyal RS fan & continue to follow his career & attended his concerts whenever he came to town. Then, he disappeared on me after an accident in the early 90's, but I never stopped listening to his music. I can remember on a trip in 1997 to WDW going to the Virgin Mega Store & finding all of his music on CD :worship: & I grabbed all those CD's up then because of course my albums were trashed from so many listenings.
So, of course when I came into the age of technology & got a computer in 2000 one of the first things I did was search for my Rick. Guess what? He had a new album & he was touring. If not for the internet, I wouldn't have had a clue. So I drug my best friend all the way to Dayton Ohio to see him for the first time live since 1987. Soooooooo great to see him again. Since then, he has continue to put out new music & tour. My DH who is the most wonderful man on earth puts up with this obsession & he is the one who now accompanies me to these shows. The very first show we went to was in Atlanta & this was when the dream to meet Rick was born. A girl sitting close to us had a smashed guitar in her possession & was all excited. I asked her about it & she said you could buy the guitar & get back stage to meet Rick. Well, it was all over then. He knew he was going to have to fork over the money & do this for me. We tried in vain to make it happen a few years later, but that wasn't to be (long story). So, to make sure what happened that night would not happen again, he bought me an autographed guitar which gave me entrance to a sound check at the show of our choice. So in June of 2007, we went to see Rick again in Chastain Park in Atlanta. I got to attend the sound check before the show. It was only me & one other girl. He sang several songs & I felt like I had my own personal concert. He chatted with us a bit from the stage & then when everything was all set for the sound check, he came down to talk to us. It was an amazing experience. I had thought all along that I wouldn't be able to talk to him & that I would cry, but I did very well & told him about why he meant so much to me. I got several BIG hugs & he was very gracious. He even asked where I was sitting in the audience & said he would try to make it out to me (he comes out in the crowd during the show). It was an experience that I never thought would happen to me & it was wonderful.
Here's the photo in my memory collage I made of the experience.......
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4448.jpg
Since then, I have seen him several more times in concert. My DH runs into him in the gym in the hotel.....hilarious. He was right down the hall from us in August in the hotel & he just smiles & waves at me now. I am not a stalker, we just end up staying in the same place by accident. He is always gracious & stops when people ask him too for pictures & autographs. I don't bother him as I had my moment, but I do enjoy the fact that he seems to recognize me & always gives me that smile (which is rare for him unless he's having his picture made).
Oh another cool thing, his new CD Venus in Overdrive features fan photos in the CD line & my picture is in there. So freakin' cool. That's me in the bottom row next to the last picture in right hand corner....we both have on our sunglasses.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_4429.jpg
Thanks for indulging me..........I love telling this story.
I'm off to my cake decorating class in a bit. I am going to try to make a Disney themed cake. If it turns out ok, I will post a picture later & I promise a Disney trip related update too.

i am sorry but i find this so funny
he sang at our county fair this year, which the fair grounds happen to be located in my city.
well they gave him the key to the city before he sang...and the funny thing was like 8 people showed up to the courthouse when they gave it to him, and he put it down on the table and forgot about it and left it.
:rotfl:
so whenever i hear his name i just laugh.
i am sorry and i think it is great that you like him.
so onto the imagenerring book, want to give it to me.

I'll have to think on that.........we did most of the rides so that is why rides aren't up there on the MUST DO lists for me. We will do rides I am sure, but I want this to be more about the experience & soaking up the atmosphere of Walt's park. Thanks about the cake. I had fun & I love doing the Disney writing. Maliboomer is an attraction in DCA. It launches you high up in the air extremely fast. Almost a reverse Tower of Terror, albeit with an almost complete lack of themeing.

Hi Melanie. I'm trying to remember exactly where Gus is. In looking at my pics from the statue, I think they're inside the rolls of the scroll.

The tour is fascinating. You may already know a lot of the stuff they talk about on the tour, but it's still worthwhile. While there may not be a lot of "new" information for those who have long respected Walt, it's still worth doing. For anyone new to Disneyland, espcially WDW vets, it's well worth doing to understand how and why Walt built Disneyland.

My DL TR is in my siggie if you want to see what we did. We stayed at DLH, ate at Hooke's Pointe - it was a "toddler trip" so not quite like yours.
We have been to DL many times - did our town tour of Hollywood in 2003- you are really going to love it! We watched the stars arrive for a premier of Under the Tuscan Sun at El Capitan when we were there. Of course, we didn't even see the Disney soda fountain with all of that excitement going on!

:yay: & :welcome: Tammie!!!! I love it when I get readers that return, makes me feel like I have done something right. I will have to pay a visit to your trippie as well. I am loving reading about people's DL experiences as it helps build my excitement. Ohhhhhh cool, you got to see an actual premier. I am checking Jimmy Kimmel's website all the time, to see who the guests are going to be so if they are interesting we can go.
I am not sure what to update on next.............
Everything is mostly done but the mundane stuff.....like packing.
The only big thing I have left to do is decide how to get back to LAX from Disneyland. I have been looking at town car services & looks like it is about 100$ one way for that. I found a van service that was about 70$ one way. Anybody got any good tips for this. I don't want to do a shuttle service as they make too many stops & we have a 7:15am return flight & they would probably want to pick us up at 3am.
I can't believe we are at 22 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am excited about the tour. This trip is going to be so great for my Walt fascination!! Hope you can find the countdown at Target.
I am excited to hear about Disneyland from Walt's point of view. I cannot wait.
Let's see...............
The Grand Canyon........why when we can go to Walt's Wonderful World:confused3 We will get there eventually honey, remember you get to pick the next vacation. You are welcome for all the planning (sorry I know I can be a bit OCD about it sometimes). You are right we are going to have a BLAST!!!!!!!!!!!!

Melanie, you might check into the Disney shuttle - I'm not sure where the information is, but Disney hotels have a shuttle you can pay for - round trip from LAX. It might be cheaper just to take the trip back to LAX one way than to get a car service.

I am right there with you Melissa. Being named Melanie, people always want to shorten it to Mel & I too hate it. My DH does it just to make me mad. My Aunt & cousins have always called me that & I guess it's too many years for them to change so I don't really fuss with them about it. But if someone new does it I always say politely of course "I really don't like to be called Mel because it reminds me of Mel's Dinner.":lmao:
I've been busy with some projects....so I haven't really updated, plus I am not sure what to update, but I will think of something & promise one today after my cake decorating class or tomorrow.

It's so interesting how I keep meeting kindreds here on the dis. My family calls me Missy and I never notice it till I get a new boyfriend or friend who squint their eyes and furrow their brow then slowly realize the wonderful new possibilities to tease me with. lol (course the boyfriend parts are over now, Thank goodness!)

In other sort of related news......
We are going to the beach in May followed by 2 nights at WDW at the Boardwalk. Today was 180 days (at WDW if you don't call at the 180 day mark you are likely not to get the dining arrangements you want:scared1:-for all you DL vets really different). So, I called this morning to make our measly 2 little ressies & they are doing a computer update & said I would have to call back in December. Oh well, I tried.

Good luck getting what you want Tammie pixiedust: I only need to make 2 as we will be driving over from Jensen Beach on Friday & just goofing off that day probably DTD, mini golf. I want dinner at the Flying Fish that night & to go to Jellyrolls probably to sing along with the piano players. So if you are a Disney animation buff at all, you know about Frank Thomas & Ollie Johnston who were 2 of Walt's 9 Old Men. They were 2 real characters & were brilliant at putting real emotion into their characters. I  them.
If you haven't ever seen this DVD & you love Disney history, you should get it because it is fantastic. Sadly, Ollie who was the last one of the 9 old men left died earlier this year :sad1: but they live on in so many wonderful films!!!! Next time you see Baloo doing his Bear necessities dance or watch Thumper giving his "Eating greens is a special treat" speech know that you are watching performances by 2 wonderful animators/actors named Frank & Ollie.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51S5Y7XTPZL._SL500_AA280_.jpg
Anyway, my DH loves these 2 as well. He said he was going to ask the Disney sketch artist for them if he gets to have a picture done. But then he said, you could probably draw them for me. I like to dabble & I am by no means good at it, but it's fun for me.
So I decided to make him this card to send to him at work in preparation for the trip.

So to keep myself & you guys from getting bored until I leave, I thought I would share a few favorite memories from each Disney trip we have taken together over the years.
Our first Disney trip together was in December of 2002. We had been dating about 2 1/2 years at this point & after much planning, we finally headed down to WDW. We stayed at the All Star Movies & got a room in the Fanstasia building. Our tradition became to kiss under the big sorcerer's hat every time we walked under it.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/2002-AllStarMoviesFantasiaBldg.jpg
It was COLD & we had to bundle up several nights to be able to hang around for the parade, fireworks & Illuminations. We had a wonderful time & knew we would be back together many times. We got engaged a couple of months later in February.:lovestruc
Special memories from that trip.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/2002-AfternoonTea.jpg
Us at afternoon tea at the Grand Floridian. This has become a tradition for us when we are at the World long enough to enjoy it. It is a great way to get away from the hustle & bustle of the parks & just relax together. We really love having afternoon tea & often seek out tea rooms on our trips now. This was our very first afternoon tea together so it will always be special.
We attended Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party of that trip as well.
This is us looking a bit worse for the wear after having a wonderful day & a COLD night of watching it snow on Main Street, watching a terrific Christmas parade & drinking hot chocolate at the hub waiting for the fireworks. What a magical night.:santa:

One more favorite memory from our Dec 2002 trip.
Our last evening, I had made us dinner reservations at Cinderella's Royal Table. We were lead to a romantic table right by a window with a view of Fantasyland & I felt like I had been sprinkled with pixie dust.:wizard: At that time they were doing the last castle show of the day & as we were talking Peter Pan & Captain Hook ran right by our window. I had a great Hook encounter on our cruise last year. We were walking down the hall minding our own business when along came Goofy & we were just watching his antics as he proceeded to fall down the stairs. Well little did I know Captain Hook had come around the corner behind us, snuck up behind me & put his hook around my throat. Scared me to death.
I will cheer for great DH's too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:cheer2: :cheer2: :worship: :cheer2: :cheer2: :worship: :cheer2: :cheer2:
P.S. I finally started Twilight yesterday & I am about half way through. I plan on spending the afternoon curled up with Bella & Edward on the couch. I totally GET it already.

So today's walk down memory lane takes us to our Oct 2004 trip. I had never been to WDW for my birthday & we really wanted to try out Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party as well--so having a Halloween birthday, we were able to kill two birds with one stone.
We arrived on Oct 30th. We stayed at the All Star Movies again, but this time were in the Fantasia 2000 building across from the Sorcerer Hat from our last trip. So the jack in the box was our kissing spot this time.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/2004-ASMoFantasia2004.jpg
We spent the morning of my Bday in MGM Studios (I am going to have lots of trouble with that name change.
We had dinner at 1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian.
Here I am blowing out my candles on my birthday cupcake.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/2004-Blowingoutmycandles-37thBday.jpg
After dinner, we headed over to the Halloween Party. We me up with Eric's sister & her husband in front of Town Hall & then went to get her a Goofy Hat where I of course had to try on the birthday hat.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/2004-HappyBdayHat-2.jpg
We had a wonderful time that night enjoying the party. We
saw some cool things that we haven't seen since in 2 more parties.........

You are so right it seems like it will never get here. But I do still have a lot to do before we leave. We need to put up our Christmas tree (I don't think I am going to do all my decorations this year since we are going to be gone for 8 days of the season), but we at least need the tree, stockings & nativity scene. I have most all my Christmas shopping done, but I need to wrap it all & get my Christmas cards done as well...........so at least I have things to do to keep me occupied.

So this trip in Feb 2005 was supposed to be a surprise. We had annual passes that we bought for our Oct trip, so I was able to get a great rate on a hotel room & at that time Delta was running a special on airfare & I got 99$ plane tickets. I was so excited to be going back to Disney so soon & for so reasonable. I am, however, not very good at keeping a secret. Can you imagine that?:lmao: So one night we had on the Wishes CD & my DH was rubbing my tired feet after a long day at work & out it popped.
Oh well..........we stayed at Port Orleans Riverside & had a great trip full of romance. I was able to keep a secret the fact that I had booked us a carriage ride before our Valentine's Day dinner at California Grill. I got a small bottle of wine for the occasion & we walked over to the main bldg & this was waiting for us.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/Feb2005-Luckythehorsecarriage.jpg
It was a wonderful ride & very relaxed & romantic. It is a great Disney memory for me that has nothing to do with the theme parks. :lovestruc

Since it's Thanksgiving & I have lots to be thankful for, I will share a few more Disney memories because I am certainly thankful to Walt Disney for giving us wonderful films & theme parks to entertain us.
These first 3 were from that October 2004 trip on my birthday.
I found Mary Poppins carpet bag in the UK in EPCOT.

These were 2 of the funniest streetmosphere players I have ever seen at the Studios.
They walked up to the bench & dusted it off before sitting down & declaring "The Stud Bench is open for business." Then, I went to take their picture because they were cracking me up & the one said "Take a picture now, so you can think about us later.":lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Half marathon trip memories....
In January 2006 we headed to WDW for a quick trip. DH was going to run in the 1/2 marathon. We had our very first Welcome Home as DVCer's & stayed at the Boardwalk & got a great Boardwalk view.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_1177.jpg
We explored the Boardwalk. Had dinner at Spoodles. We had a drink in the Bellevue room & played a game of Scrabble.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_1210.jpg
Then we headed back to our room to watch Illuminations from our balcony.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_1218.jpg
Eric had to be up really early the next day & be at the start by 4am. I stayed all warm & cozy in the room, but was awoken by the fireworks that I could hear going off to start the 1/2 marathon. He came back all smiles & then proceeded to take a nap while I went to MGM to wander around for a few hours. I wanted to see the Narnia walk through exhibit. It was pretty neat to see the props from the movie.

A couple more memories from the Jan 2006 1/2 marathon trip....
The next morning they were running the full marathon. We had breakfast planned at Cape May at the Beach Club & saw runners on the way to breakfast. They were in their final bit & looked tired, but happy as they made their way toward the international gateway into EPCOT. It was cool being able to cheer them on.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_1322.jpg
We had a wonderful breakfast with Minnie & friends.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_1327.jpg
We then headed to Vero Beach for a relaxing couple of days for DH to recuperate after the 1/2 marathon.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_1352.jpg
We had a beautiful view of the ocean from our room & really enjoyed just relaxing at this very cool resort before heading back home. I really want to go back there soon.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_1338-1.jpg
It was warm enough to get in the pool & splash around on our last day.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Disneygrl36/100_1343-2.jpg
We really enjoyed this quick trip & Eric enjoyed doing his first race. I would love to get myself in good enough shape to walk the 1/2 as he said it was really cool to be able to run through the castle & down Main Street with people cheering you on. Maybe 2010!!!!!!!!!!

Very good Dan!!!!!! Are you about ready to go???????
That would be cool. :cheer2:
Yes it would. I was going to do it that year with him, but just wasn't able to get the training in I needed to.

Nope, I'm still here..........I don't leave until next Monday. 6 more days!!!!!!!!!!!:cool1:  :cool1:  :cool1:
I was gone.......but just to see Twilight with my brother. Which, I thought was pretty good all things considered (having to fit it all in under 2 hrs).
Here's what it did at my house while I was gone........I know this is a tiny, tiny, pitiful amount of snow.......but here it is exciting because we don't get much at all.

Thanks Jackie.......they are nice to sit in on a day when the weather is nice. My Mom gave us those rocking chairs as a wedding gift.
We may be taking a lap top so DH can check his work email (ugh) but if we do then I might be able to do a live update or two.

Thanks Melissa. It was just a tiny bit of snow, but exciting none the less. As I was driving to meet my brother to see Twilight yesterday it was so weird, because it would snow like crazy then stop & the sun would come out. Did that off & on all day. We still have the same amout of snow left this morning. There are woods behind the house & the lot next to ours that we bought as well is all woods.

December 2006 trip.
So I am going to post a few of my scrapbook pages from this trip to kind of change it up a bit.
I love to scrapbook........especially my Disney memories.
This trip was us & my Mom & Dad. We flew down the day before our 4 day Disney Wonder cruise was to start & stayed at the Boardwalk. We enjoyed a day in Epcot with a wonderful dinner at Le Cellier. My Dad (who is not a Disney person) even enjoyed himself. He loved the cruise too by the way.......I was amazed.

I thought about only making the middle of the castle pink like the real castle, but somehow I thought grey icing for the rest wouldn't be so appealing.:scared:
I knew it was me.........darn books is right. I have only Breaking Dawn to go. I started it last night.
Mmmm, that cake looks super yummy! It looks too good to eat though! :goodvibes
I am not eating it.........I sent it to work with DH for them to eat.:lmao: I did make us a small indiv heart shaped cake so we could at least taste it. DH told me to do that after I made the first cake & he had to smell it but we couldn't taste it without messing it up. Smart man. It was lemon cake & I made the icing slightly lemony too!

Aboard the Wonder.......so after our day at EPCOT, we headed to Port Canaveral & boarded the Disney Wonder for a 4 day cruise. We had a blast. We ended up at just a 4 table person for dinner so it was just us & my parents. My Dad was cracking us up at dinner. He was so relaxed. It was amazing-He's a judge/workaholic & you just never see him like this. The Disney magic was working on him.:wizard: & I even caught him taping his foot along with the music one night at the show.
Here are some more scrapbook pages from the cruise.

I got a call from ABD :cool1:  :cool1:  to ask if I had any questions...............
I said yes, but first of all I am so excited for this trip, I am not sure I can remember them. :lmao: :rotfl2:
She said the weather was nice, but to bring a jacket. She said they think 60 is cold out there. :rotfl:
It was nice to chat for a minute & just brings my excitement level up even another notch. She answered a few more of my questions-about our guides, tips & Walt's barn(she couldn't tell me for sure if it is a go or not).
I have forgotten to mention this & this seems a good place to do it.
This trip will take us lots of places that are normally off limits so I will not have my camera every single place they take us.....so some things I will not have pictures of & will only be able to describe to you. BUT, the guides do have cameras & are able to take select pictures in those places. I will buy the photopass CD for the trip, but I am not sure if we have restrictions on whether we can post those or not. But I promise to do a good job of describing!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the compliments Beth. I am not Martha I promise.....I am kinda crafty but nowhere near her level. I also have one advantage that alot of you guys don't have. I am not a Mom with ten million things to do to keep my kids happy. I just have a little dog & husband to take care of, so I have more free time. :goodvibes

Oct 2007 trip----7 night Disney Magic Cruise for my 40th birthday.
I decided I wanted to turn 40 in the middle of the ocean so that no one could send me black balloons etc, so we booked this cruise while we were on the 4 day in Dec 2006. It was a wonderful way to spend my birthday.
The day before the cruise we flew in & stayed at Wilderness Lodge & went to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween party again.
