Take a midday break at the resort or go all day at AK?

I know that Animal Kingdom does not take as much time as the other parks. I was wondering (for planning sake), do most people take a midday break and head back to their resort or do you keep going all day and end early?
About how many hours does it take to see most of AK for preschool aged kids? In other words, we won't be going to Dinosaur or Expedition Everest.

We liked to go early and finish it all in one shot. Then you can relax at the pool, have dinner at the resort and then head to downtown for a little shopping to finish out the night. But if you have hoppers then you could go back to the resort for a rest and if the kids are energized afterwards then go to whatever park the kids love the most.

We've finished up at different times depending on how busy it was in the park and how long we watched some of the animals like the silverbacks.
