I'm just curious to see if there are any other fans of the movie, Newsies. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this movie, Newsies was a 1992 Disney musical that starred Christian Bale. After watching the movie this past weekend, I did an info search and came across several articles mentioning that it was a box office flop and was panned by the critics. I was really surprised to see that because I thought that it was a good movie. Sure, the movie isn't perfect, but I don't think that it deserved such a harsh reception. What did you think of the movie? Please share your thoughts.
Edit-
:welcome: to the official Newsies thread! Since there have been quite a few people who have said that they are Newsies fans, I have decided to turn this thread into a my own Newsies fan page. Feel free to jump into the discussion, ask questions about the movie, gush about your favorite Newsie, etc. Anything goes! Well, anything that's DIS-approved, of course! ;)

I actually love that movie. I thought the music in it was great. I did have the soundtrack to it (and had it memorized at one time), but I can't find it.

LOVE it. Was obsessed with it when I was a tween. I use the song "King of New York" to teach tap to little ones... 3-5 years old. :)

It wasn't one of my favorites, but definitely enjoyable and worth watching. I love the song Seize The Day. We actually performed that number during a show choir program back in high school.

I absolutely love the movie! In fact, just last night, I was playing some songs from the soundtrack in the car. There's nothing like singing "Look at me... I'm da King of New Yawwwwwwk!!" at the top of my lungs to cheer me up. ;)

Thank you all for your responses! I'm happy to see that there are other Newsies fans out there. :)
SillyAuntJen- That's awesome that you use the "King of New York" song in your tap classes! :) :thumbsup2
mbcary- I was singing and dancing along, too! :dance3: It's hard not to, especially during the "King of New York" number. By the way, I like Spot "Never fear, Brooklyn is here" Conlon, too!! I love these quotes from the courtroom scene:
Spot: Hey, Your Honor, I object.
Judge: On what grounds?
Spot: (thinks for a second) On the grounds of Brooklyn, Your Honor. :rotfl:
dustyraye- The "King of New York" song rules!! However, I like to change the word "king" to "queen" since I'm a female. :laughing: I also love the songs "Carrying the Banner" and "The World Will Know".

OMG I LOVED that movie! Apparently Christian Bale is super embarassed about the movie and will rarely answer questions about it.
I also read somewhere that it was actually filmed at Hollywood Studios before the park had its Grand Opening.

I heard that, too. I read that he was embarrassed by the movie not only because it flopped at the box office, but because it was a musical. Apparently, when he signed on to do the movie, he thought that it was going to be a straight drama. When they decided to make it a musical, Christian Bale wasn't very happy because he was afraid that being in a musical would make people think that he wasn't a serious actor. Too bad. :sad2: Christian Bale and rest of the Newsies cast should be proud of their work in this movie. They all did a great job.

That's so cool! I didn't know that! :)

I loved this movie as a tween. I rented this movie so many times that my brother's would cringe whenever they saw me putting a movie in the VCR. I had such a crush on Christian Bale after this movie.

She watched it in school a year or two ago and came home talking about it, kept going on and on how much she enjoyed it. We've looked for it a few times in the stores, but have never been able to find it. FF to now and I found it! She is going to be thrilled when she opens it.

I absolutely love that movie! In fact, when it came out, I had both the soundtrack and the VHS tape and wore both of them out:happytv:
I didn't know that Christian Bale was embarrassed by it. That is kind of sad to hear. I thought he did a great job with the song, "Santa Fe," which is suddenly stuck in my head LOL
I think my favorite line in that whole movie would have to be from Gabriel Damon, " I object!" "On what grounds?" "On the grounds of Brooklyn,your Honor!"

I saw an episode of ER a few years back where Kirsten Dunst was playing a teenage prostitute. Gabriel Damon(Spot) played her pimp. It was just a bit role,but I was sooo excited to see him onscreen again. It's a shame he isn't used more as he is quite talented and definitely fun to watch!

Definately love it! I'd actually never heard of it, until we just finished watching it in journalism and I'm obsessed. (Haha. Signature.) I actually put Newsies in the search, figuring I would see what everyone else thought, and come to find out the last post was yesterday! I'm listening to seize the day which I sang a couple years ago but never knew what it was from. I plan on getting the soundtrack sometime. I feel really out of the loop because all the girls are in love with Christian Bale in this movie, but I really liked David Moscow much better.

Philadisney- Thank you so much for the newsiesfreak.com site. That girl is one heck of a Newsies fan!! I got a chance to watch some of the videos last night before I went to bed. The Newsies parody at Disneyland was hilarious! I can't believe they actually did that. She and her friends are VERY brave! :worship: :laughing: I love the scene where the "Newsies" are buying their papers (um, I mean "papes") and the girl asks, "Do you take Visa?" :rotfl: The parody of the Santa Fe song was one of my favorites.
ctot216- I love the part where he rides the carousel, too. I also love "Jack's" dancing during the Santa Fe song. It's so funny to see the looks on people's faces as they pass by him. They probably thought that he was out of his mind! :rotfl:

Newsies Slang
newsies = newsboys
papes = newspapers
Soak 'em! = Beat 'em up!
scabber (or scab) = a person sent to replace a person's (usually a striker's) job
Cheese it! = Run away!/Get outta here!
the bulls = the police
Could you spot me.... = Could you lend me.....
two bits = 25 cents
What do ya say? (or What do ya hear?) = Hi/How's it going?
skunk = to defeat overwhelmingly
grafter = criminal
catch a breeze = get a break
Carry the banner! = This phrase seems to have several meanings (especially in this movie). For the real newsies back in 1899, "carry the banner" meant to sleep outdoors and/or to walk the streets all night long, which is what many newsies had to do in order to sell all of their papers. In this movie, it seems to mean "to bring them the news" and "to further the cause".

(Don't feel obligated to be as long-winded as I'm going to be! :laughing:)
I like this movie for several reasons. First of all, I love that it's a musical. I have been a big fan of musicals for my whole life. I especially love the movie musicals from the "golden age" like Meet Me In St. Louis and Gigi. I think it's great that the director, Kenny Ortega, had such a strong desire to see musicals on the big screen again. It's also amazing that he got a cast of (almost) all boys. When I was in high school, I saw how difficult it was to get guys to join things like choir and theater. I think that this is a great musical for guys because it seems to celebrate boyhood. You can tell that the boys worked so hard in this film and I think they all did a great job.
I also like this movie because I think that the story is so inspiring. The newsies were the ultimate underdogs. I've been doing some research on the real newsies and I'm fascinated by their story. I'll do a "history of the newsies" post one of these days.
I like Racetrack. I like Crutchy. I like Jack. I like Spot. I like Mush. I like Kid Blink. I like Boots. I like Les. I like David. I like Skittery. I like Specs. I like Snipeshooter. I like all the newsies that I can't name. I like Mr. Kloppman (the keeper of the newsboy's lodging house). I like Mr. Denton. I even like Weasel and the Delancey brothers. I like the dancing. I LOVE the songs!! I like the way they talk (and I love newsies slang). I like it when they "soak 'em for Crutchy"!! I want to go to Santa Fe. I want to seize the day and carry the banner so that the world will know that the newsies are the kings of New York. I like papes. I WANT TO BE A NEWSIE!!!!!!
:rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:
Edit- I almost forgot! I love Brooklyn!! "Never fear, Brooklyn is here!" :)

:laughing: When I'm doing things around the house and listening to the music I'll just start saying lines from the movies and try out their accents. I'm not sure how it sounds though.
Well, you know what they say.....practice makes "poifect". :)
I can't believe Max Casella was around 24 in that movie!
He looks like he's 13. :eek:
I know! I was really surprised to find out how old he really was, too. It's usually an advantage to look young when you're in the acting business, though. Directors love to have people who are over 18 to play teenagers so that they can work longer hours.
The first time I saw Christian Bale was in Swing Kids which I saw last year. It's a brilliant movie, I highly reccomend it.
Swing Kids is another great movie. I love the music!!
I've never seen Swing Kids. It sounds interesting, though. What's it about?

Here's some summaries from IMDB:
"The story of a close-knit group of young kids in Nazi Germany who listen to banned swing music from the US. Soon dancing and fun leads to more difficult choices as the Nazi's begin tightening the grip on Germany. Each member of the group is forced to face some tough choices about right, wrong, and survival. Written by Susan Southall {stobchatay@aol.com}
In World War II Germany, Swing music becomes the underground movement of young people. Two engineering students attempt to be Swing Kids by night and Hitler Youth by day. The impact of this decision is felt acutely by their friends and families. A charming SS officer complicates matters for Peter, whose father was taken away for defending his Jewish colleagues at the University. Written by Dave Smith {dave@stat.colostate.edu} "
A penny for your thoughts...........
OK, Newsies fans, I've got a question for you. Why do you like this movie so much? :)
Well...
I'll start by saying history based movies are my absolute favorite, hence why I love Swing Kids. I'm also in love with Pearl Harbor, Gladiator, The Patriot, National Treasure and probably any other movie dealing with history.
David is definately my favorite character. I think he was a real leader along with Jack to show that kids do have power and it really shows how the press can be effective. I really loved even though they were the underdogs, they still fought for what they believed in.
Everytime I hear seize the day I just want to go run down the street, because I'm so inspired it's crazy. For me it's an all around feel good movie, even though there are really tough parts that get you down.
I love musicals as well, so I definately was already going to like it. I like the use of personalities in the characters as well as the slang and accents. I think they got real good actors, and the dance routines were great. How they made the minor characters so major.
I like how they just hinted at the Jack/Sarah relationship and didn't go full out with it, because it let you think. My friend and I both wish we were Newsies too. :goodvibes
And I don't know if I'm the only one, but I absolutely loved their clothes.
Swing Kids is another great movie. I love the music!!
I always want to dance when I see it. :goodvibes
I need to get the movie, since I don't have it though.

It's about a group of teenage friends in Nazi Germany that are really into swing (or jazz) music. There is a lot of swing dancing in it. It's a really great story with great music.

Thanks for the summaries, guys. It definitely sounds like an interesting movie. I love swing music and I like movies that are based on true stories. I'll check it out one of these days. By the way, ::Snow White::, I absolutely loved National Treasure, too!! I adore Riley!! :laughing: :) That movie made me want to brush up on my American history. If you love historical films, I highly recommend a Disney movie called The Greatest Game Ever Played.

Riley's my favorite!
I haven't seen that movie, I'll have to look for it.
I was reading mistakes in the movie, and I went and watched where David hit Sarah in the face. It was funny.
I'm addicted to that Newsiesfreak site.
If anyone has seen CNN student news podcast, the guy at the newsdesk that reports everything looks a lot like Denton. We watch them in class and then we watched Newsies and our teacher said "Oh my gosh! Is that, the reporter on CNN!?" It wasn't, but it was pretty creepy how similar they looked.
ETA: I just ordered the movie and soundtrack! I'm excited, it should be here in a few days!

Woohoo! :woohoo: Let us know when they arrive!
By the way, thanks for telling us why you like this movie. I can totally relate to how you feel when you hear the Seize the Day song. The World Will Know is really inspiring to me. Every time I watch the King of New York number, I wish that I could have been in that scene so that I could be singing and dancing along with them! :laughing:
So......anyone else want to share why they like this movie so much?
::Snow_White::

I love King of New York because it's so upbeat. The world will know makes me feel powerful, and Seize the day makes me feel connected to people and all happy.
I'm really suprised because I just got an email saying they have shipped my CD already.

I saw Moulin Rouge seven times when it was in theaters. It really needs to be seen on a big screen! Definitely rent it though!
I only got a 60 on that quiz. Some of the questions were really hard, like the number on the police officer's hat :confused:

I got a 100% on the quotes. I did pretty good on the rest. Some of them were really hard.

Yeah, some of those questions were pretty tough. I think I just got a B- or C+ in Newsies 101. Gotta go watch the movie again! :laughing:
I just came from the Community Board. Wow, the debates are really raging over there! :scared: I have chosen to keep out of the political threads, but I feel a little guilty for participating in such frivolous discussions. In an effort to discuss more important things here on the Newsies thread, I want to ask you all a serious question. Am I the only one who wants to be the guy spinning on the fan at the end of the "King of New York" number? :lmao: (Oh well, so much for being serious. ;)) Come on and admit it!! You know you want to! I found out that the guy's newsie name is "Bumlets". Gotta love those newsie names. In fact, I think it would be fun if we could have those fun names, too. So, Newsies fans, your assignment for this weekend is to choose your own newsie name. I'm trying to decide between "Bounce" and "Tig Blink". :rotfl: Happy name choosing!
P.S. I'm going to be adding to the list of Newsies (page 2) and Newsies slang list (page 3). Check back for the updates! :)

I am soooo excited!!! :woohoo: :cool1: :banana: :cheer2: I've only seen clips of this movie and I've always wanted to see it in its entirety. To see what time it'll be showing in your neck of the woods, you can check the schedule here. I've considered several names like Bounce, Bubbly, Skeeter (anyone remember Muppet Babies?), Cowgirl, Hunny-hater, Woozle and Pumpkin-eater (there's a newsie called "Pie-Eater" in the movie). :rotfl: I think I've finally decided on a newsie name. Tiggerfan1 shall officially be known on this thread as "Tig Blink". You can call me Tig for short (or maybe just Blink). So.......how are you guys coming on your names? Yeah I don't really remember her that well, but I always wondered what happened to her. I absolutely LOVE the Muppets and was happy to see that Scooter made an appearance in last month's "Studio DC" special . . . it seems that he's not really been in anything lately. I'm really excited for the new Muppets Christmas special - that should be really good. :santa:

Hi, WS! :wave2: I often thought the same thing about Skeeter. My guess is that Miss Piggy refused to do the Muppet Show if Skeeter was on it, too. She was probably afraid that Skeeter might steal Kermit away from her. Miss Piggy doesn't like competition!! :rotfl:

Since tomorrow is election day, I probably won't be on the DIS (I'll probably be glued to the TV screen.) I shall leave you with a question. Which newsie would make a good president and why? Please....no snarky political comments and PLEASE don't let this turn into a debate!! This is only for fun.
For those of you who haven't seen them, here are the Newsies parody videos (in case you want a little entertainment to take your mind off the election). A girl from the Newsies Freak site parodied the movie with her friends at Disneyland and California Adventure. They dressed up as newsies, sang and danced to the songs-- the whole nine yards. It's hilarious!

My nickname there is Aura!

If anyone will know the answer to this, it's the DISboards. When Newsies opened, did anything happen in the Disney parks? Was there ever mention of Newsies in the parks ever?!
