Lenses for Nikon D90

I'm looking at purchasing a Nikon D90 and don't know wether I should go with the kit lens 18-105mm f3.5 AF VR or if I should buy the body only and purchase the 18-200mm f3.5 AF VR lens which would be about $400 more.

I was thinking of getting a 50mm f1.8 but a friend suggested I consider a 35mm f2 instead.

I don't have any insights on most of the lenses that you have purchased - however, I did just buy the 18-200mm VR to go with my D60 and LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. All of the pictures on my smugmug below were taken with it. The range was great, it wasn't too heavy to walk around with it hanging on my neck, the pictures were nice and sharp...just in general a real pleasure to use.

I have also heard many good things about the 50mm f/1.8. If it wasn't for the fact that I would have to manually focus this lens because the D60 has no internal focus motor, I would buy it in a second. For the price, I would think it'd be hard to beat.

The 50/1.8 is an awfully good portrait/low light/shallow DOF lens for $115. I have one and don't use it nearly enough, but when I do, it almost always exceeds my expectations.

The 18-105 VR is much sharper then the 18-200 VR. The 18-200 is a great walk around lens for sure but the more I got into things the less satisfied I have been with it's sharpness, even switching to the kit lens before I sold my D40 and bought the D90 w/18-105 VR. There is nothing technical about this of course, just my own personal experience. I can honestly say I'm not missing the extra distance. Hope this helps.

I just got the D90 and I have the 18-105 and borrowed my neices 55-200 VR. I really like both but am unsure if I will buy the 200 zoom or go 300 zoom. I really like the 18-105 and the zoom. I enjoy being able to add several lenses to my collection!:goodvibes

I picked up the 300 VR with my D90...The kit lens is a nice walk around lens so far though!
