We got up at a reasonable time, about 9am and wandered through to the breakfast room and helped ourselves to cereal, toast and tea. Once we had eaten we decided to head off to the Calico Ghost Town arriving just after 11am. First impressions were that it was a tourist attraction but not a very heavily visited one as the car park was quite empty, although by the time we left there were quite a few tour buses with a lot of Japanese on them!

It was interesting wandering around the old town imagining what it must have been like years ago in its ‘heyday’. A lot of the buildings were original but some had been rebuilt after a fire a few years back. There was an old mine you could enter for a $1 so we decided to do that as it was also a respite from the heat, which must have been in the low 100’s!!

The view from above the mine across the town and out to the desert was very good and thinking back to years ago when transportation was slow must have meant to get here would of taken ages!

There was a little train in the town which ran at regular intervals.

As is usual with any tourist attraction there were shops and places to eat and drink. We grabbed a drink and sat for a while just to cool off before starting to make our way back to the car as a storm was now approaching. As we left we could see the lightning in the distance so decided it may be an idea to go for lunch and then shopping :) Having not had a McDonalds yet on this holiday we went back via McDonalds and from the restaurant on the I15 got a good view of the storm which was hanging over the mountains. First stop for shopping was Walmart.

We were amazed at the prices of the stuff in here such as a two cell AA Maglite for £5 rather than the £15 at home! It was also a good stop for gas at about $2.97 a gallon. Once we had all we could bring back we went to Von’s aka Safeway and got some bread and beer :teeth: Back at the hotel we chilled out for a while and then once the sun had gone down we went out for an evening swim and Jacuzzi. After this it was time for bed and more shopping at the outlets tomorrow.

We did the guided tour of Calico a couple of years ago with actors playing the part of the original townspeople which was a great way to spend an hour or so.

EDIT: Actually that was in a completely different town (although we have been to Calico). :rolleyes1

my DH would love to see that old wild west ghost town. He has always said that he missed his vocation as a gold panner :rotfl:

Nice description of the ghost town and what fun pictures. From the Old West back to the world as we know it now with your photo of Wal-Mart. What would a trip to America be without doin' a little Wal-Martin'?
