Planning a trip for Jan 2003 and wondering if any past cruisers can tell me what to expect in the way of water temps. We cruised last dec 1 & tho the water was a little on the cool side we were able to get in & enjoy. Should I expect much difference in Jan or book later in the year...say march or april? (Wanting to go during winter months to get a break from a wisconsin winter!!)
We are looking at the western caribbean cruise.
Thanks for any info

You may find the water to be a bit cool at Key West and Castaway Cay, but it should be quite comfortable at Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

We cruised in January 2000 and the water was cool in Castaway Key but we were still able to snorkel comfortably! The water in the Mickey Pool was a little cooler, but it didn't stop my kids!
Have a great time and enjoy those cheaper rates that a January cruise will bring you!

We cruised Jan 2002 and the water temps were cool but OK to swim. Being from SC we are used to HOT summers and warm water temps and we still enjoyed the water. We would cruise again in January without a second thought. The weather was beautiful- not too hot and not too cool.
It was tough coming back home and having to wear a winter coat while sporting a nice tan!LOL

When you say cool what is the approximate temperature of the water in January? I'm surprised somebody from Maine found the water cool since I have been to Maine (Acadia National Park) in August and the water temperature was 50 degrees. You cannot even swim. You walk into the water and your ankles turn blue.
I'm not kidding. If the water temp. is 65 or higher in January then I would be happy. For the most part I guess it would depend on where you are from as to whether or not you think the water is cool or comfortable. Just my opinion. I'm sure it will be fine. Look at it this way. I would rather be in the Carribean somewhere in January than somewhere cold and snowy regardless of water temperature. Just slam down a couple of those rum drinks and jump right in!!!!!

Thanks for all your replies. Guess we'll keep the January booking! I know what you mean about the water in Maine....even in summer I won't get in brrrr!!! Water temps in the 70's with air in the 70-80's is about as cold as I want to be for snorkeling.
