Western Cruise tour options

I was just wondring if anyone has done tours outside of cruise line offerings?

For the western cruise in particiluar are there any tour web sites? I would like to research some options.

In general, what are the advantages of using an outside tour operator? I assume cost might be one but is the cost difference material?

An alternative source for planned excursions is www.shoretrips.com. I have not used them or heard from anyone who has, but they seem to be legitimate... and they have answered all my email inquiries quickly and courteously.
