How does it work? Do you have to be a member to rent points? Or can you rent points to try out the club?

You can make arrangements to stay at DVC resorts directly through Disney (just like any other WDW hotel). Sometimes, they even have discounts.

The other option is to make a private arrangement with someone who is a member of DVC. This has been done through the Rent/Trade Board on this site or on E-Bay. Disney is not involved in the transaction at all and you have more limited cancellation options. You also get the same limited maid service that members receive (not a big deal). If you book through Disney you get regular maid service.
