Hey to all!
I have a qy\uestion for all of you experienced cruisers. I suffer from motion sickness and wondered if -
a) Has anyone cruised with a person who has this problem and how did they cope with it?
b) If you have this problem, did the medication work or did oyu need it?
c) If you would consider it a bad idea to even attempt a cruise.
I am told they are very large boats and will probably have no problems but this is buy the people selling the cruises. Any input would be appreciated.
Thank a lot

My wife has a problem with motion sickness. We had pretty calm seas and in the daytime it was not a problem for her. At night it bothered her some and she popped a pill and was o.k. I think it may depend on how much motion effects you and how rough the seas are.

You normally do not feel the motion as much as you would on a small boat, but you will feel a bit of motion, even if the seas are calm. If the seas are rough you will feel the motion even more. DO NOT LET THIS DISTURB YOU. Many people with motion sickness have taken the plunge and found that they can cope quite nicely with all the "drugs" that are out there on the market.
Some people swear by bonine, dramamine, ginger tablets, sea bands, etc.
There are some non-drowsy formulas out there as well. People say those are the best because the other ones can make you feel groggy.
I am sure someone else with firsthand experience can help you more. We are very lucky in that none of us ever experienced motion sickness on our 5 DCL cruises.

I realize I have motion sickness when I was on a train travelling across the country. Prior to the cruise I paid a visit to the doctor and he give me a prescription for the patch. You will find lots of threads about the patch here, so I will not get into it.
On the first night the ship did move a bit in four to eight foot waves. I found out latter that has something to do with the Gulf stream. It was not bad but you could feel the rocking of the ship. For the rest of the trip it was fine. Most of the time with all the activities and port visits never felt anything.
In talking to the crew I found depending on when in the year you cruise. Winter waves tend to be more and sometimes when the ship tries to advoid a storm you may encounter some bad weather.
In the end I never use the medication and had a great time. I just advoided looking at the waves from our room. :D

My daughter gets severe motion sickness, always have. We did our cruise last July and I admit our seas were great. At first when we started moving she took an over the counter pill, she was afraid of getting sick, and the next day she took one. After that she was fine. We could feel motion one day in Parrots Cay and in the theatre during a show. But she was fine. We were on Deck7 for sleeping hope that helps.

I am a "ride in the car reading" type motion sickness person. i got very sick on our first cruise. I took Meclizine and was much better the next day. Now I take it about 1 hour before I get on the ship and I am fine.

Yes, I am curious also. Is it something you have to keep up all trip? Is it bad to drink while taking that medication?

I get motion sickness in the back of a car so I was REALLY worried about our cruise and we were on the cruise that was cursed with 20 ft swells!
I will swear by Meclizine though. I started it the day before we left and took one every 12 hours, each day. Never even felt queasy. I did have a drink at dinner also. (Alcohol can make the drowsy effect more noticable.)
Meclizine is the same thing as Bonine but can be purchased over the counter for a lot less (100 tablets for $6 at WalMart, compared to 6 Bonine for $4!)
Lots of fresh air and ginger ale also helped.
Good luck!

I don't think there are any "non-drowsy formulas," just "less drowsy" formulas.
