just returned from a stay at the cabins:lovestruc in my opinion the best place to stay, but anyway one thing to look for in the cabin on the shelf oposite the phone or may be with the phone is a bounceback offer it will be on a piece of paper read it my mom had one in her cabin and almost threw it out :scared1: also if you are going to do laundry bring your own soap it is 2.00 to wash and 2.00 to dry and if you need soap its another 1.00 and dryer sheets also 1.00 for 1 sheet or may be 2 sheets better to bring your own, bring lots of quaters as the change machine by the pool hates older dollar bills, if you decide to do the campfire bring marshmellows as they are 4.25 a bag and make sure you use bug spray (we were in a rush and i forgot to use it  needless to say we missed the movie :sad1: ) bring coffee if you drink it as the stuff they supply yuck, what other things can I tell you hummmm just let me know if you have any questions ok have fun
I don't know the details of how you are getting there but if you have a car, stop at Walmart or Publix (more expensive but great food) and buy your groceries. We usually have breakfast and some dinners at the cabin plus snacks. As the previous poster said get your marshmallows too!!!! And ice cream. You can eat it on the deck. My son loves that!!If you don't have a car there are places that will deliver food for you. It will be cheaper then buying at the Fort. It is a rip off.
Next I would say get a golf cart, if you can afford one. It isn't necessary but it sure is fun. We love it.
If you plan to grill, buy a few utensils. The cabins doesn't have any. Or at least last year they didn't.
Things that we love to do at the Fort,
Watch the fire works and electric parade from the beach
riding the gold cart
pool (it isn't elaborate but it is still fun)
watching for wild animals (not Disney ones :))
Hope this helps.

Thanks it helps alot ;) Are there pots, pans, plates & utensils??? I will probably be making Kraft Mac & Cheese ( I know I know but its their fav and my go to if all else fails) so I hope there are pots. Are there grills??? I will be there on Halloween so I'll be bringing a big bag of candy to hand out. Thanks for your advise and help its really appreciated :flower3:
Somewhere on this site you can search for the list of everything that is in the cabin. I can tell you from personal experience that the only thing we needed was the grilling stuff. The cabinets are stocked with pots, plates. big coffee pot, silver ware, and anything else you might need. Yes, there is a grill but you need to bring the coals. They will empty your grill after every use too. And do your dishes while you are at the parks!!!!!
You will love you time there!!! We wont go anywhere else for a while. I have a 4 year old and it is ideal for him.

Go to allearsnet.com and go to the FW page in the accommodations part and it will list what is in the kitchens. Having said that, the kitchen had everything we needed, except extra cups. There were only 6 glasses and 6 coffee cups - not enough for us. Just grab some silo cups when you go to the store.
The only other thing I would for sure point out is that there are places to unpack on either side of the Murphy bed. That will give you much more room for unpacking than just what is available in the bedroom. But, if you don't look for it, you might miss it.
You will have a GREAT trip! FW Cabins are now our favorite place to stay. Feel free to ask any further questions if you want.

We're stying at the cabins from 9/25-10/4. This will be our second time there.
I know I packed a double burner griddle($14 at target) very light weight and fit in our suitcase. Last time trying to make grilled cheese or french toast was a pain with round frying pans. I also bought at the $1 store a closet organizer thing, it's like four shelves and I can put some of the kids closes on it. Storage is pretty slim in the cabins. I bought rope lights for the deck and am bringing an outdoor timer, so I can have lights like the other REAL campers.
This is the first time we're getting a golf cart and I had asked on here how to keep it dry in case it rains. Many suggested the outdoor swing covers from WalMart $10, but I couldn't find them, so I'm bringing a shammy and putting it in a ziplock back and we'll use that. I didn't want to come back from say MK and have a wet seat.
I also got some battery powered lights to hang on the golf cart as well.
That's just some little stuff, also make sure you request what loop you'd like to be in as well.

Hi! It's been a few years since we stayed in the cabins, but I read on these boards about a few things that made our trip really great, and kept the cabin neat. We were there in December, there were 5 of us, and the cabins were ideal!!! I'll say this upfront, we are not park commandos, and spent lots of time soaking up the relaxation of FW!
I brought those 3M Command hooks, and put several of them on the wall by the door to hold our hats, lanyards, jackets, keys. Otherwise, everything ended up on the kitchen table and then onto the floor when we wanted to eat. We bought most of our groceries at the Trading Post, yes, a little more expensive, but I had been saving Disney Dollars for 2 years! And really convenient to stop by at night for the next day's stuff.
Definitely agree with the PP who mentioned the storage on either side of the Murphy bed, I brought those foldable fabric storage cubes (from target) and used those for my and DHs socks and underwear, and smaller clothes, and then just stacked the shirts and jeans. Plenty of storage in the bedroom for the kids' clothes.
Used an over-the-door shoe holder on the back of the bathroom door for the toiletries, yes there is counter space, but I hate the look of things piled everywhere.
Brought twinkle lights and a Christmas wreath for the door, made finding the cabin at night Super Easy! It's dark out there at night! I used the lights to wrap around our porch railing, remember an extension cord!
Also loved having a power strip, plugged it in by the phone, that was our charging station, no scrambling to find everything plugged in all over the place.
Had a great day at the pool, (yes, in December) kids swam while I did laundry.
Definitely do the campfire at least once, my kids say that is one of the highlights of the trip.
Golf carts are great if they fit the budget. We spent a few mornings zipping around the campground looking at the Christmas decorations.
The food and atmosphere at the Trail's End Buffet is great! We went there several evenings, and the attached bar, to enjoy a cocktail on the porch while the kids used the playground. Very relaxing on a cool night with an Irish coffee!!! Great CMs there, brought the kids coloring pages and hung the finished art work on the walls. You can do take-out on the food from the buffet, fill a few containers, and bring it back to the cabin. We bought two adult dinners, thinking the kids would just have PB&J, and we actually fed all 5 of us from the buffet containers!
And Now for my Best Tip!!! -- We also loved taking the boat to the MK. I had set up a breakfast ADR at the Crystal Palace at 8:00 a.m., which was before park opening at 9:00. We were on the boat at 7:35, no one else was around, it was slightly cold, which is better than hot to me any day, and we walked into an empty MK. Breakfast with Pooh and friends, out the door by 8:45 a.m., stood at the rope drop to Adventureland, and first ones on Splash Mountain that day. The kids got a Magical Moment certificate and free picture! Our favorite morning of the trip!
Well, that's a lot, and I'm sure I can think of more if you have any questions!

Please keep the good advice coming!

Bring a pop up hamper for all your dirty clothes. It helped control the mess. The space is limited and the hamper helped alot. I wish I had thought of the 3M hooks. They can be used for wet pool towels, jackets, ponchos etc. Also I would bring 2 over the door shoe racks one for toiletries and one for shoes. They do pile up right next to the door. Oh and we pur most of our luggage under the kitchen bench. It fit there perfectly and was totally out of the way.

We LOVE LOVE LOVE the cabins! Unfortunately for our trip this month we will be at POR for the first time in about 8 trips. Well not totally unfortunate since we WILL be in Disney! :cool1:
One big tip....bring a cookie sheet. That's one thing they dont have and is great for refrigerator cookie dough and/or pizza. And you could fit that easily in your suitcase.

For starters you should stock up on food and do a lot of your own cooking. The kitchens in the cabins are nice and it will save you a lot of money on meals.
You should bring an extra blanket just in case. They provide one spare blanket but I found my family always needed two spares, but that was just my family.
Besides that everything else is pretty much provided.
Hope you have a great first time there, it's such a nice place to stay!!!!1

I found them at my local Walgreens - Orange LED lights about 6' or7' long - uses two AA batteries and are supposed to burn for about 70 hours on one set of batteries - 3 for $10.00. I bought 3 sets for the cart.

Sorry, but this is not allowed. No tents allowed in the cabin loops. And, from what I have seen this rule is enforced.

While it was never on the utensils list - the cabins no longer have one of those electronic match thingees to light the charcoal in the grill.
I asked housekeeping for one and they said they no longer are providing them.
So, if you plan on grilling anything, make sure you bring matches.

If you need extra blankets ask mousekeeping so you don't need to pack them. Trails End no longer has the take out from the buffet but you can get take out chicken, nachos, wings or pizza. Have a great trip, you will love it at the Fort.

Rent a golf cart, or take/buy bikes. Its a long walk from the cabins to anything and after a day in the park, taking the WDW transportation to face more walking puts a little damper on the experience.
I know, we didn't when we stayed in the cabins. It's the biggest mistake we've made in going to WDW

Things we brought, or purchased from the winn-dixie out on Apopka Vineland road :
coffee filters and coffee (large pot is a standard 10-12 cup)
water bottles
ponchos for the kids (4.99!)
red plastic cups for your choice of beverages in travel form ;)
matches, charcoal, etc
beverages, snacks, groceries etc
my other recommendation is to bring COFFEE MUGS. the little teacups they give you are fine for OJ but not big enough for a good cup o' joe. you can use the glass jelly jar glasses in a pinch though.
Also, pick up a Winn-Dixie store card while you are there. saved ust quite a bit of $$ on the clipless coupons...

Things that worked well for us...
Garden Grocer!
Packing items it didn't make sense to buy from garden grocer (GOOD coffee, filters, a couple other small things).
Sending special trip coffee mugs ahead. The ones in the cabin are TINY! And I like a big cup for coffee. More than one.
Pop up hamper
Hanging toiletry sorter. With 6 of us, it was nice however the bathroom is surprisingly roomy!
I agree on using the tops of the cabinets on both sides of the murphy bed for luggage.
There are not any cookie sheets in the kitchen, a problem for making biscuits or cinnamon rolls (or pizza). Workarounds were available though.
We didn't have a car for most of our trip, or a golf cart and it was fine. I think it really really depends on the ages of your group. However, without a car or cart I'd request a cabin at the front, or end of the loop as to be close to the internal bus stop. It worked wonderfully for us!

Here's a question:
If you bring down some cookie sheets or pizza pans, and leave them in the kitchen when you check out, will Mousekeeping leave them there? Or will they remove them?
I guess what I'm getting at, is, things that you don't want to bring back home, such as those pans and mugs from home, are you better off bringing them to another family who might just be checking in?
(Hoping to convince sister(s) to stay at Ft Wildnerness Sept 2010..cabin or rent-a-trailer..):flower3:

I would almost guarantee that they are removed, perhaps to Lost & Found, and then eventually to the property sale. I would think finding a neighbor to pass it on to would be a better option.

Cheap over the door shoe organizer (the type that lays flat against the door) worked out great for bathroom toiletries since counter top is limited if you have a lot of people.
We used pop up cubes here as our "drawers" for undies, etc. Also dollar store zip bag for under bed storage worked out great.
Oh and yes those post it hooks worked great. We were able to easily remove them when we left.

If anyone can guess - what is the "longest" your walk to the internal bus could be. Could it be longer than 10 minutes?
Thanks - considering switching to a cabin for our August trip.

I believe the longest walk is from the back of the 1900 loop (around 1919) and that is 1400 feet which at a 2 mph stroll would take 8 minutes.
:santa:
EDIT: Oh! I just saw you are looking at the cabins, and I don't have the cabin stops plotted, so I cannot help. Sorry. But I am going to leave the original post in case any campers were wondering the same thing.

Love the thread. I just discovered the cabins yesterday and they sound perfect for my family. We are going the last week in October with my Dad and I like that we can all stay together instead of getting 2 rooms. Plus I don't have to stress out about the kids being too loud or running down the halls in their excitement to beat us to the elevators :)

That's okay - you're a wealth of information!!

I know this is an older thread... but I am actually packing right now for our trip to FW cabins. Arriving next week-
We'll be bringing:
cheap tablecloth for the picnic table on the front porch
citronella bug candle for porch, bug spray for us and anti itch lotion
charcoal and lighter
outdoor christmas lights with extension cord and timer for porch (my hubby was not too thrilled to climb into the attic and dig through the christmas decorations... but I made him! :thumbsup2)
purple colored battery powered lights for golf cart (DH is huge Baltimore Ravens fan... to each his own.;))
the usual kitchen stuff folks have mentioned (coffee filters, etc)
over the door shoe organizer for back of bathroom door- put all of our lotions, hair products, etc in the orgainzer)
night light (for any middle of the night potty trips)
tips for mousekeeping in separate envelopes (1 enevlope per day)
smores ingredients
bag full of quarters, pop up laundrey basket, new Purex 3 in 1 sheets (laundrey soap, fab.softener and dryer sheet all in 1- much easier to remember 1 sheet then all 3 of those items separately) :laundy:
Glow in the dark neckalaces, bracelets, glow sticks, etc- kids love wearing them around when the sun goes down
Grown up drinks!!! the kind that go into a frosty mug...:thumbsup2
I can't think of anything else that someone already hasn't mentioned.:scratchin
I can't wait to get there and get settled in!!!
I hope everyone has a wonderful trip!!!

This is great information! Right now we are torn between staying at POR or the cabins, but after reading this thread, I'm almost convinced the cabins will be much better. There are 5 of us, so we don't want to be cramped in one hotel room, and it seems the cabins are much roomier. Thanks for all the great info:yay:

Command hooks. Over the door hooks. Under bed organizer - my sister used zip around kind from dollar store. They had 6 adults and came in handy. Also, pop up cubes used to store undies, etc on shelving on either side of the murphy. Rain ponchos. If you're driving and have room extra camp chair, otherwise you only have benches. Power strip for charging all cell phones, etc. Have fun!
Subbing...we pushed our trip up a few weeks and are now leaving in 15 days - :cool1: But now I'm freaking about forgetting something. Thanks for all the great tips!
Is there a spot next to the Murphy bed for an alarm clock? I can't stand waking up and not knowing what time it is...although I can always use the cell phone.

There are cabinets on either side of the bed. Have you looked at all the photos of the cabins? That's where you shoulds store your clothes, too, from what I've heard from other folks. I won't know until August 16!!!

The cabinets reach about table height, with a deep counter-top back to the windows (on either side of the Murphy).

another tip, when you first get there, make sure the ice maker is working, we didn't have ice for a little while, my dh and dad fixed the one we were staying in, but we were drinking cocktails faster then the ice machine was making ice!!! or bring your own. I can't wait to go back there, the cabins were very peaceful!
