Yes, be careful Jeff!! You may just keep running around in loops seeing how many times you can run the 5K before the last person crosses the finish line from doing it just once!!! :lmao:

I decided on Friday that my return to running was going well enough to consider running my first 5k--yes, only my first 5k. (Minnie was my first race, and it was definitely a challenge!) So yesetrday I signed up for the Birmingham Leader Dogs for the Blind 5k--also had a 10k and 1 mile run.

Today was a great morning to run--cool, slightly overcast. I went downtown and got my chip, stretched, ran into some friends who had also registered yesterday and then next thing you know, we're off!

The course was mostly flat--isn't everything in SE lower Michgian?--although there are a few small hills. And it turns out, the course covered some of the ground I did in my longer training runs for Minnie, so it was familiar territory. The last 1/2 mile seemed to be all uphill--gradual (like the off-ramps at DIsney), but still enough to cause people to groan (I kept mine quiet!)

I forgot my watch, but I figured it was only 5k and people would probably have times. I was right. Now, I have yet to learn my running pace--I'm still totally clueless at knowing how fast I am running. Mainly, I try to run and maintain a certain breathing cadence. And given my disappointment in running outside vs inside (I seem to be faster indoors), and given the fact that I was just hoping to finish in 30 minutes, I was rather surprised to find that I finished the race in 27:28!!! (8:51 pace). If I was to look at my splits, it probably went something like 8:30/9:00/9:30, but who cares! I finished
2nd in my age group.

So all in all, I'm thrilled. Although while I was doing the last hill section, I was thinking: how in God's name will I make it through a 1/2 marathon!

Maura,

WAY TO GO! Second in your age group. I am impressed!

One of the reasons I wound up buying the Garmin was that I am horrid at "pacing" So I would go out to fast and "burn out" at the end! Garmin helps me see how I am doing!

Maura...great job!! :cool1:

The Pre 10K in Coos Bay (hometown of Steve Prefontaine, record setting runner in the 70s, career ended too young due to death in a car crash) was great fun!

It's a hilly course...I think the only flat section was the last 300m which is on the track at Marshfield H.S. (where Pre attended school before going to Eugene to run for the Univ. of Oregon). I ran with a guy I know from work, and he wanted to just make it fun and we would dress in costume to run. So I brought my Dorothy outfit I wore in the Kansas 70.3 tri, and he dressed as a scarecrow. Very funny to get to the start line and one of the college cross country teams had all dressed up and they had a Dorothy, Tin Man, Lion, and Wicked Witch! haha! The 'other' (much younger) Dorothy had glued red sequin fabric on her running shoes, so they were better than mine, and she had on the full dress (I just had the skirt with a white top), but I had a better Toto dog in a basket. I am totally copying her shoe modification when I race in Kansas again next year!

Anyway, we started out up a long hill, then down, then up, then down..etc...so my splits are all over the place. My friend was sweet to stay with me (he would have run way faster on his own), and we came in about on target at 1:03:47, for a 10:17 pace. I am happy with that, since it helps me know where I'm at pace wise, and I do remember how to run, after the meltdown at Ironman Canada 4 weeks ago. I didn't quite negative split (was trying), but didn't drop too much time in the second half.
Sore now, but it was fun. And a cool Pre t-shirt for my efforts! (part of the reason I wanted to do this event! ha!)

Good luck to the rest of the racers...would have loved to do the tri at WDW this weekend. Hope it's a good event. I have a sprint tri next weekend, that I will be undertrained on the bike for. :confused3

Betsy: Congrats to you and getting that great t-shirt.hehe

MAURA: WOw you did great and what an awesome pace. I think you will be able to do the Half without much of an issue. You did fine at the Minnie and it's only 4 more miles than that!! You may need to slow down the pace a bit so you won't poop out towards the end , but I think you can do it!! (and isn't that enough?? :lmao: )

GO WISH team!!!!!!

Maura congratulations on your first 5km! You absolute star that pace was brilliant. You're going to do a great 1/2!

Betsy I hear you on the hills, at least they do come down eventually :rotfl: You did really well tho and how lovely that your friend stayed with you. Must make it more enjoyable. Fab work

I did the Cabbage Canter 10km race this morning. It was set in the cutest cheshire village ever- had sort of a fete feeling and we had lovely weather- 20oC clear blue skies... a little hot for me in midday sun tho. There was a great warmup first, then 10km, 5km and 3km set off together. The run was basically half uphill and half down each lap (there were 2) which was hard work for hill hating me. Anyway with lovely marshalls and great village support made it around in 53mins which was a couple of mins quicker than expected so v happy.

Me with my cabbage!

Airdrie Mayor's Recreation for Life Run (5K)

I waited until less than a week before the race to sign up, but it's been on my radar for a while. I wanted to see where it would fit into my half-marathon training, and find out if it would conflict with anything. Since my training schedule had a 2.5 mile tempo run for today, I figured a 5K race would fit in well. In the spring, after only running for 2 months, I did a 5K in terrible weather and finished in 36:40. I knew I could do better than that today, so my goal was to finish in 30 minutes.

The weather here today was overcast, cool and a few showers - just about perfect for running (although chilly for standing around after). This is not a chip timed race, but there were less than 100 people at the start, so it didn't take long to cross the line. I used my Garmin to track pace and keep time. Everything went pretty well, but I just didn't have quite enough for a strong push at the end. I finished in 30:20, which I'm happy with.

For where I am in my half-marathon training (end of week #1), I thought this was a good effort. It's also a nice tune up for the Expedition Everest Challenge next weekend. We will be treating that one as a "fun run", so we won't be pushing hard for that one. When we get back, I'll have a write up and pictures of EEC.

Way to go Michelle! PR each and every race, just like Casey does :thumbsup2.

I forgot to mention. The guy who won the Niketown 5K, my wife said he collapsed after crossing the finish line. She though he was "playing" with the crowd, but then the ambulance was called in.

I figure he must have hyperventilated, because when I crossed the finish line, he was sitting on the curb, being attended to by the paramedics. He was coherent, and talking, which was a good sign.

Beware of those timing chip mats. I saw lots of people trip and stumble on them in the two different locations they were placed.

Finally, during the 1 mile fun run I witnessed two kids on bikes, and one guy and his kid on a Segway. I don't know how they got on the course. That's so wrong, and dangerous. Some people just don't know how to follow rules.

Finally after being home for about 11 weeks now I got to get my first tri of this stretch in. I'd done a century ride and the DL HM but the tris around here hadn't fit into my schedule until now. It was the Athlete's for a Cure triathlon at WDW.

Having run this event last year (prior to it being rebranded) as well as the Ironman 70.3 at the same location I knew pretty much what to expect. The swim was foggy, murky, and delayed. Probably the fact the sun wasn't up caused at least a 15 min delay, so they shortened the time between waves from 5 min to what seemed like about 3 min. I was in the 3rd to last wave, which is actually where I prefer. I'm such a slow swimmer that I'd rather not get run over by too many people and enjoy just being at the back to begin with. I felt like I was focused more on my form and my new every 2 every 3 alternating breathing style kept me going in a striaght line but I had some sighting issues as the fog made it pretty tough to see the buoys that were pretty far apart. Highlight for me was actually passing a couple swimmers late in the swim, as that has actually never happened before in any race. Was disappointed in my time which was actually 6 seconds slower than last year, but many were saying their times were longer than average. Was not suprised to see that I was 18th out of 18 in my age group, but was a bit surprised to see that 17th place beat me by 8 full minutes. :sad2:

1500m Swim: 47:04 18/18 AG

T1 went according to plan for the most part. As usual I have a few mistakes to note. Leaving the planned hydration and bottles in the hotel fridge = bad. Forgetting sunglasses = also bad. Had to make do with some water bottles that didn't really fit in my bike cages but I was lucky enough to have some extra powerade in my bag. I felt like I was really hurrying and out of there quick, but was rewarded with again a 5 second slower time than last year. This includes a really long run up from the beach.

T1: 4:54 14/18 AG

The bike as usual was my favorite event. This year it was an entirely closed course to traffic, even though it was using main WDW arteries. Riding portions of the marathon course around Epcot and down the cloverleaf was great. A few u-turns at Wide World of Sports, Animal Kingdom, and one more out the south end of the resort and I was flying back toward transition. Beat my goal time by a minute or so even though the course was about a mile long by my Garmin, so really more like four minutes. It was obvious how far back I'd fallen on the swim, because all of zero people passed me for the entire bike leg while I made up ground on many others. Felt like my time was great, but turns out there are a lot of great riders in my AG also. Checked my overall bike rank to help make me feel better about not being top half AG, and was very pleased. Better yet, my Garmin MPH avg was over 21mph!

Bike: 1:11:13 10/18 AG 92/533 OA

Had some issues in T2 trying to take off my tri top and put on my WISH shirt, it got rolled up behind my head and was tough reaching up to yank it down. Felt like I was out of there in a hurry though, and checking my time turns out I hit my goal exactly.

T2: 2:00 13/18 AG

Both previous events at this location have led to cramps on the run. The year previous I only managed an 89 min 10k due to plenty of walking. This year I'd taken a gel about halfway through the bike, and took more gels at miles 1 and 4. The course did have approximately a half mile of grass each loop so about 16%, but this was significantly less than the 70.3 which was more like 40% grass. Some rain the day before made it a bit marshy at times, but less pounding probably helped my legs. Was able to push it a bit, and shoot for my goal run time, and was crampless throughout. My splits trailed off a bit toward the end other than a faster last mile, but was still quite satisfied with the improvement over the previous year. Was so close to getting under an hour, there's always next week!

Run: 1:00:45 13/18 AG 200ish/533 OA

So altogether was a bit disappointed by the swim, half and half on the transitions, thrilled with the bike, pleased with the run, and overall felt it was a great race and a testament to the training I'd done over the previous weeks since being home. My 3 hour goal is within reach next week, as well as my goal of being top half overall.

Finish: 3:05:54 16/18 AG 283/533 overall

Shoutout to whichever female said "GO WISH!" on the run, didn't recognize the blur and wasn't sure it was a DIS member or not... I know we had others at the event, anyone see my flaming green shirt?

Next up is another olympic next Saturday in Mexico Beach, then looking at probably doing a HIM near Jacksonville the week after.

Congrats to everyone who raced this weekend, looks like we had an army!

And special shoutout to Howard who just clobbered my best HM time thanks to some great training over the past few months, and is going to help motivate me to lower my splits during this upcoming marathon training season. :cool2:

And one more for DW who suffered through a 5:30am wakeup after a long weekend of theme parking and was still there to film/cheer all day long! ;)

Matt: Glad to be of service! :lmao: I blew the doors off of my old time, now I have to live up to the new standard I have set for myself... not an easy task at all. :headache:

Great Job on the Tri... not in my future plans (yet). Maybe a dualathon (run/bike).

Hey Matt, John here

I had posted a couple times on the triathlon thread and was psyched to find your race report! Nice job on the bike! I was there and greatfully finished in just about the worst shape I have ever been in at the end of an event. I had a decent swim and was placed in the last wave so I had a chance to sight off some other people and I made my best attempts to stay on course but it was difficult. Keep in mind for your results too how many people in your wave had to come out of the water on a boat...I was able to watch each wave go off and there were plenty of folks plucked out along the way, so you weren't last in you wave by any stretch.

Swim time: 34:46

Not too bad but I covered the same distance in the NYC Tri in 22 mins...the conditions at this event were unique and from the looks of the results it seems everyone had a little trouble.

T1: 3:45

I felt good out of T-1 and in typical dumb-me fashion I only brought one bike bottle with me and it turned out to be too little. In NYC last summer I over fueled and as a result puked my way through the 10K, so in fear of that I figured I would minimalize the intake and get it on the run. ...BIG MISTAKE.

Bike Time: 1:11:46

It seems we were on the same course, I also didn't get passed much and as I am use to digging my way through the mtns of upstate NY I found the bike course to my liking. I did cramp a little but I attribute that to the constant spinning with no downhill cruises to break the monotony. I felt really positive coming into T-2 and I had actually slowed quite a bit over the last 5K on the bike to lower my HR and give my legs a little breather.

T-2: 1:46

My transitions are getting better as I have now (almost) mastered the shoes-off-while-on-bike thing and that has saved me many precious seconds this season. I slipped my kicks on and as I normally did all summer long, and in every race since last year, didn't add socks to the mix....BIG MISTAKE #2.

My 10K went like this, mile 1-8:10, mile 2-9:30.......mile three, 10:50..."uhh why am I shaking...?" "why is my left leg ice cold?".....I basically walked-ran-stumbled and plodded my way to the end of the 10K to finish in 3:04:33. Not my finest hour and after a quick pop into the medical tent I was ready to remove my shoes and inspect the damage. The top of both feet were covered in blisters, each toe had it's own pain and my head felt like it was going to explode. I had a goal to equal or beat my 2:48:00 from NYC last year and when the run began it was more than within reach, I just bonked. I wasn't prepared for that oppressive heat man, you Florida guys are tough as nails because that heat was somthing to behold. I feel pretty good about how I did even though I had a terrible finish but I also got to spend the whole next week at the Poly with my kids so it was a win-win. I would reccomend this race to anyone, it's laid back, has a really flat bike course, and it is definately a challenge with the heat....
