View Full Version : Kevin: Please, Please, Please do a new San Angels review

As everyone knows, San Angels food quality has continually gone south over the past 12 years, and 4 years ago, we finally had to say enough was enough. We haven't been back, though will be heading to the world again this coming April, and would love to try it again. I hope Kevin can fit San Angels into his schedule between now and then. Being Mexican food lovers, we'd love to go back, if Kevin would give it at least a half a thumbs up.

Oh, Kevin, do it just because it will make for a funny review. Like John says... "[comedy] is easy when you've got good material".

This was such garbage the last time we ate there, such a shame because I love the location, I did love the ride, the new one is not my fave, another topic! Kevin go,please!

Kevin, I'd LOVE it if you went there! We also used to go, but finally took it off our rotation because the food was not great. It is a real shame because the atmosphere almost makes the bad food worth it. Imagine if the food was good ...
The same is true for Rose and Crown. It has a great location for Illuminations, but every time we go back the food just gets worse and worse. We just went in August and it was terrible.

If only San Angel Inn food was as good as the atmosphere! Wouldn't that be wonderful! I agree with some others; the wonderful atmosphere is almost worth the so-so food. A dining review would be interesting! Kevin, whatcha think? Could be interesting.

You may simply be having a moment! Sit at the Mexican Pavillion Tequila Bar and rest a spell. Then don't go near their restaurant! :thumbsup2

The food was just okay when we went during Labor Day weekend (walk-in). They use Tositos and a jar salsa. The enchilida and chilaquiles sides should had been warmer (my home version and our favorite resteraunt home are a lot better/cheaper). We both chose steaks and they were almost overcooked and not much seasoning. The desserts were okay. We had pretty good server and drinks were keept filled. We did not leave the place hungry.
The atmosphere was okay, but I had to use the camera to read the menu and to see if we had our correct entrees. We will not be back for a long time for a meal, but maybe to enjoy an adult beverage and a appetizer and/or dessert.

We ate there in Jan. Awful. But I don't remember the tequila bar. Where is it located? We're going back to WDW in Nov. and I would love to sit and sip without bothering with the food :cool1:

having asked this question before, and had it answered... they don't pick where to review based on what would make for a funny review. Though it may not seem like it, there is a rhythm and reason for places that get picked, new places, chef changes, menu changes... I don't recall the exact numbers, but I think there are more than a few places on property that havn't been reviewed yet, let alone reviewed twice (notable exceptions for places that got follow up reviews because of outside influences).
Some restaurants you already know what to expect, and there have not been significant enough changes to warrant re-examination.

Well, it is the coolest looking restaurant. It is in the Mexico Pavillion in Epcot. A part of it overlooks the boat ride. Much of it overlooks the marketplace. You really do feel like you are seated at a restaurant, out on a veranda, under the stars, overlooking some corner in Mexico.
I haven't eaten there since I was twelve or fourteen. I don't remember liking the food, but I didn't like much other than cheeseburgers at that time.

I asked them to do this a few months ago and everyone just laughed in their posts. I guess it must be really bad????

The two times we've (or family) have eaten there - the food was dry. You know what it tastes like when you cook a burger too long on the grill and there's .00012% moisture left - it's like that....only $20-25 per person.

As was said on the last Podcast, there is no doubt that their opinions really do carry alot of weight with Disney, and there is no restaurant I'd rather see improve and become a signature restaurant at EPCOT.

I can honestly say this is the one restaurant in WDW we would never return to -- even if it was free! (What does that tell you?)

We ate there in 2006 and I was kind of scared about it because of the reviews. We actually enjoyed it. Was it out of this world? No, but it was OK and we are returning on the next trip.

is that what they told you? What a crock!! I'm going to explain how it really works....
They have a giant map of Disney World on the wall and they play "Pin the resteraunt to review" You should have SEEN how PO'd John was when Kevin managed to hit Planet Hollywood 3 times in a row!

I haven't eaten at San Angel Inn, only at the Cantina across from the pavilion along World Showcase Lagoon. The Cantina's okay, but I LOVE Mexican food and have stayed away from San Angel solely because of the consistently poor reviews it gets. Considering the widespread American enjoyment of Mexican cuisine, it's surprising that more isn't done with this restaurant.
BUT - that could be said for more than one of the World Showcase restaurants. (Nine Dragons, anyone!?)

(First...gotta say I've only been on this forum a couple times, but its seems so friendly! I don't listen to the podcasts much, but I'm loving the threads I see here:goodvibes ) Now...let me say we've only been to San Angel Inn once. And let me say that it was PLENTY. I do like the atmnosphere of the pavilion itself, and being seated by the water is nice...but. The waiter had no clue what he was doing. The food was subpar...and(no matter what people thought about me when I told them I didn't think the chips should be round:rolleyes: ), I thought it rather tacky how obvious it was that there were warm Tostitos on my table. Not to mention the fact that big bags of ROUND Tostitos were being sold in the marketplace. My whole family laughed about it, and this was before we were seated for our meal. I'd love to hear a few good reviews of this place, so we could maybe go back...but for now, we're steering clear of the place.:)

We ate there a couple years ago and thought it was pretty good. The chips we were served were definately NOT Tostitos.....we had nice fresh home made chips. Our kids gobbled up the chips and salsa so much that they almost didn't have room for their meals. Don't remember exactly what we had to eat otherwise that day, but don't recall it being terrible. Of course, we live in Northeast Wisconsin, so great Mexican food is not a real specialty here. Maybe we just don't know any better!
For our upcoming trip, we had made a lunch resssie for the Garden Grill.....which now won't be serving lunches anymore. When I asked our kids (DD13 and DS9) what restaurant to switch to, they both agreed they wanted San Angel. Hopefully we won't regret that decision. On a side note, one of the other restaurants we have on our schedule is Citricos, which I'm now really looking forward to after hearing this week's review! ::MinnieMo

I pretty much gave up on them in 2003 or so, when they discontinued the watermelon juice they had on the menu. They brought it back for some of the first few F&W Festivals, and then dropped it again like a habenero in the springtime!
That was a very sad day.....

YellowMickeyPonchos,
You know I'm leaving for WDW in 2 days. So where is the tequila bar? I'll have one for you! :worship:
All,
We've eaten at San Angel several times over the past 10 years. We're skipping it this trip. I enjoy good Mexican food. That rules San Angel out. The last time we ate there, I sent my meal back to the kitchen because the chicken was medium rare. :headache:
Plus DH won't eat there again because they didn't serve tacos on the dinner menu. I can't repeat DH's opinion of San Angel. It's unsuitable for the DIS. :lmao:

if you are really set on Mexican food when you are here, take a bus to Down Town Disney & walk down to the Crossing & go to Chevy's. It is cheaper & much better than anything at San Angels.

Hey Yo-Yo!
Definitely have one for me - it's inside the Mexican Pavillion. It's a cart or something similar. Someone said it was off to the side of the "Plaza".
Dian-er is right about Chevy's being better than the sit down. I usually rank the outside one as equivalent with Del Taco or (in the old days - Naugles).

and see? that's sad that we're comparing mexican food to Chevy's! I do enjoy Chevy's a lot (ate there yesterday actually..lol) but I don't consider it 'real' Mexican Food. That being said... STEEER CLEAR OF SAN ANGEL! :rotfl2:

Woo hoo Naugles :goodvibes ! I remember that place from when I lived in Hollywood, way back when :goodvibes! Regarding Chevy's, we love that place and since our first trip we have always gone there on our last evening. The walk from DTD is alright until you have to cross the major street and then find your way through the bushes through the parking lot :upsidedow! But the fake tacos are good, better than what we get here in Sweden (waves at Kevin  ) where I live now! Although what I would really like is a proper, corn tortilla taco fried up right, soft and crispy all at the same time. Yummy stuff ::yes::.
We are booked in at San Angel for our upcoming trip :scared1:. We aren't crazy about the food either but are going for the atmosphere. This year I'm thinking we will just order apps and drinks, or something, and Oop it.

During our visit I thought we would enjoy the atmosphere as well...but honestly, they had so many people crammed into the restaurant that all you could hear was silverware clinking on dishes, an occasion dropped tray, and people complaining that it was so dark they had difficulty even reading the menus (but on the plus side...they couldn't see the food either! :teeth: ). IMO, it is such a waste of time, space, and money. :sad2:

Oh my gosh, Naugles!!! That (and Tommy burgers) were IT for study breaks in college - although both would probably give me heartburn now....
What I am dying for is some DECENT SALSA in WDW. Do I need to bring it with me? hm... ponders how to get that passed Homeland Security and no Chevy's doesn't count.

I agree 100%. After the Nine Dragons remodel, this waste of space should be next on the hit list. There are so many other choices. Life is too short to dance with ugly men, or dine in bad restaurants.
