Fond greetings to you all from the land of bellies distended with tasty vacation food! I can't speak for my hubby, but I feel like a forest critter that has eaten six months worth of food and now needs to find a cozy, moss-lined den for hibernation. Jay always says "bye-bye belt" at the end of a WDW vacation; right about now I'm wondering how I'm going to fit into my clothes for work on Monday, hence the title of this post.
I can't start any reviews until the pictures are uploaded and organized and that's the hubba's job. It's likely to be a few days before that happens so I thought I'd give you guys a few highlights and teasers to keep you happy until I can get down to work.
Please note: I have updated the first post on this thread - the "official" list of restaurants / snacks has been updated accordingly so that you all know exactly which establishments we will be reviewing.
In the reviews to come you will read about alternately exciting, delicious, annoying, and downright confusing things like free whiskey; zweetburgers; the WDW Foie Gras Situation (panderers); and a criminal lack of coffee beans available for purchase across the WDW resort.
You will learn how, despite purchasing filters weeks in advance of our trip, I still manged to screw up the coffee process. You will marvel at our ability to spend nine days at WDW and only ride three attractions while watching absolutely no fireworks, parades, or concerts. You, too, will wait with bated breath for the outcome of the Saratoga Springs Parking Lot Smackdown.
Our overall food experiences were quite good ... we thought breakfast at Boma absolutely lived up to the hype; Wolfgang Puck's upstairs dining room was fantastic and his lower level sushi bar was pretty damn good, too; Blue Zoo was awesome ... CA Grill was a wee bit disappointing ... Citricos was a delight ... and Dole Whips are lost on both of us.
And I almost forgot ... we canceled our dinner reservation at Kona on Sunday, October 12th, in order to enjoy a dog at Casey's, some more F&W snacks, and a sundae-and-a-half at Ghiradelli's (intrigued? stay tuned!).
In order of best to worst, we'd rank our F&W special events as follows: French Regional Lunch (BAM!); Party for the Senseless (pretty good); Kitchen Conversation w/Robert Irvine (once was enough for a multitude of reasons and we can't in good conscience recommend it).
The world showcase Food & Wine booths were offering pretty tasty food samples this year and in most instances the serving portions were generous. Our favorite booths: San Francisco, Louisiana, New Zealand, Spain, and the Cheesemonger. If there is a single booth I'd warn people away from it would be Poland ... the food was not good on the evening that we tried it and that $8.25 cocktail was a rip-off of gargantuan proportions and it was vile.
Finally, I must give a special shout-out to two self-described lurkers ... both of whom were kind enough to approach us during our trip and introduce themselves while saying some very kind things about our reviews. You know who you are and thank you very much - you both put a huge smile on my face. :flower3:
And again, thank you all so much for the kind comments while we were gone and the birthday wishes today. You guys are the bestest!!! :grouphug:

Wednesday, October 8th - Up, Up, and Away ... It's Time for the First Drink and Meal of the Day!
We've learned many things during our years of travel and have tried to be adaptable ... hence the need for us to pack provisions into my DVC backpack for the flight down to Orlando. Since American Airlines is now charging passengers for everything but use of the toilet and the stale, non-circulating air in the cabin there is no way that Jay and I will pay extra for a snack or a celebratory vacation drink. If we're going to over-pay for food and beverages we'll do it at WDW, thank you very much!
And that's why my two-quart baggie of prescription medications also included this:
Alcohol: The Cause of and Solution to all of Life's Problems!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/PA070014.jpg
Mmmmm, miniature vodka and single malt scotch samplers ... let the vacation hilarity begin!
It took a while for beverage service to begin because we hit a big pocket of Mission Space-like turbulence over Gnashville but eventually a surly flight attendant arrived with some thick orange juice that we "fixed" with a healthy dose of Pravda vodka.
Vorange juice!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/PA080016.jpg
And for mid-morning snacking we shared a mix of unsalted cashews and fat, juicy raisins.
We'd gladly charge you $10 for this snack baggie!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/PA080015.jpg
So the plane landed ... blah blah blah ... we gathered the luggage and met up with our FL Tours driver ... blah blah blah ... stopped at the grocery store ... blah blah blah ... checked in at Saratoga Springs and eventually ended up with a room in The Grandstand section which did not thrill us at first but ultimately ended up being a great location. It was the first bus-stop both for picking up and dropping off and was only a five minute walk to the Big House and the Downtown Disney water-taxi stop. Our second floor studio overlooked a portion of the golf course where I'm sure I shocked more than one golfer during our stay by changing clothes before I remembered that the curtains were still open. :scared1:
Anyhooo ... once we unpacked Jay and I agreed that this seemed to be the perfect time to walk off the airplane bends and get ourselves over to Downtown Disney for a late lunch at the Earl of Sandwedge. We were pleased to find that the crowds at Earl were minimal and it didn't take long to order or receive our food. I was a little surprised that all the sandwiches were hot ... I'm not a fan of hot sandwiches, especially during hot weather and had I paid more attention to the menu I would have requested that my lunch be served up cold, but in my opinion when one fails to read before ordering one forfeits the right to complain.
My choice for lunch was the Ham'n'Swiss: roasted ham, aged swiss cheese, and honey mustard sauce, which I requested they spread with a light hand.
Hot and tasty!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/DSC03365.jpg
Despite being served hot rather than cold, I thought this was a terrifically boring sandwedge ... generous servings of flavorful ham coated with melted cheese and just a hint of tartly sweet mustard were tucked into fresh, warm bread. I ate every bite and it really hit the spot, fueling me for a late afternoon push at the Magic Kingdom before an even later push at Raglan Road.
Jason ordered our friend Nancy's absolute favorite sandwedge ... the Caribbean Jerk Chicken: grilled chicken, roasted red & hot banana peppers with a spicy jerk sauce.
I don't know who you are, but I'm sure you're a jerk!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/DSC03364.jpg
Jason said that this was a very tasty sandwedge with a nice spicy kick that wasn't too overpowering ... it was just right!
So in conclusion ... Earl was pretty darn good - a tasty and filling lunch that definitely gave us a pick-up for the rest of the day and which proved a good start to a food-filled WDW vacation.
Coming soon ... Aloha Isle! Thanks for reading! :goodvibes

We really enjoyed Earl of Sandwich too. I got Le Frenchy, which has since been taken off the menu, so I'm glad I got it. Great drinks on the plane!! I'll have to remember that for next time I'm flying! Never been to the Earl, we always seem to end up at WPE. But, those sandwedges look tasty.
I'm proud to say that I've been bringing little snackeroos on the plane for years. People always looked at me like I was weird. But, I say, "Who's laughing now, huh?":woohoo:

I'm not sure why it took Jay and I as long as it did to start bringing our own stash ... I think we were thrown by the TSA liquid restrictions for a while.
And if you don't drink the boozie on the plane you can just enjoy it later in your room ... no pressure!
As for the smackdown ... that's going to be a while because it happened on Saturday evening of our trip. We were skipping lazily down to the pool about 10:30 that evening, sporting a great buzz from PFTS, when it all unfolded.

Thanks for the birthday wishes! The sandwedges were quite good ... give 'em a try some time.
As for the snacks ... this was the first time we brought along anything to eat but after that experience we had with Delta back in August I will never fly without some kind of food in my backpack again.

It's weird how my alcohol and you, BENDY, are so closely related! I rarely ever drink but last night we were invited to a birthday party at a pumpkin patch. For some reason I cannot explain (other than I must have been channeling Jay's and your smarts...) I stopped to get taco bell and next to it was a liquer store and I ran in and bought two little tiny Kahlua's. Sure enough at the pumpkin patch there was a $1.50 coffee stand just WAITING for me there! Mmmm GOOD! I'm sorry but 35 10-year old boys and a cold evening in a corn maze call for a kick of Kahlua! CAN I GET A HECK YA? :rotfl2:
It cracked me up to come here and see we were on the same page.

I no longer fly without my own stash ... I consider it part of our survival kit. And I wouldn't be surprised if AA started charging people to disembark the plane once it arrives at the gate.
So for a moment, I was wondering how Alcoholics Anonymous would know about your stash...and why they would have any authority over an air terminal.
:confused3
But I'm with ya now. :lmao:
Those sandwiches are making me hungry.
What can I eat right now that is low fat, low calorie, and high in fiber and nutrients that would have the same carby mouth feel and satisfyingly stomach stuffing effect of one of those nice bready sandwiches???

As I get older I find myself getting more and more "sneaky" about things like this. ;)
I actually had three small bottles tucked into my purse for the dinner we had at Blue Zoo with Michelle and her hubby and Lori ... but when the server commented on them I was too chicken to actually open them up at the table. I did give the cognac to Lori to enjoy so I hope it was good!

Oh, you kill me! When I read my post I thought that too; AA = Alcoholics Anonymous. :lmao: I guess I can't fault anyone else for thinking that, given how much Jay and I like to drink on vacation.

Whole wheat pizza dough from Trader Joes... take it home, roll it yourself, add spinich, BBQ sauce, and white meat (already cooked) chicken pieces... cilantro, green or red onion, and sprinkle on some ground flax! Top it with a LIGHT sprinkle of your favorite low-fat white type cheese and bake it up. It's also pretty nice to put some grilled pineapple on it when it's done cooking.

Of late, I have noticed an interesting new trend on the restaurant boards ...
In the spirit of bandwagon jumpery and tongue-in-cheek fun pokery I would like to lay down the "rules" for this thread. Failure to abide by these rules will result in a visit from Jasper and his trusty paddle:
http://www.distinctseo.com/images/blog/jasper.gif
Da Rulz:
1) Taking these reviews too seriously ... that's a paddling.
2) Thinking that your opinion or comment isn't welcome here ... that's a paddling.
3) Not licking your monitor when a particularly tasty piece of food porn is posted ... that's a paddling.
4) Staring in slack-jawed amazement at my upper arm flab ... that's a paddling.
5) Paddling this food canoe without a healthy sense of humor ... oh, you'd better believe that's a paddling!

1) Jay said that it was grilled chicken breast meat sliced into strips ... does that make sense?
2) You are only allowed one 2-quart baggie per passenger ... and all liquids must be no more than 3 ounces, each. I always send my prescriptions through in a baggie because some airports are pickier than others. I tossed the little likker bottles into the same bag with my prescriptions and they went through the scanner with no trouble at all.
Hope that helps and thanks for reading!

Hi Jamie, welcome home! Maybe I'm confused about the size of the baggie ... it's just the standard, square ziploc baggie - maybe it was only a 1 quart. All I know is that I shoved as much into it as I could!

You can take as many 3-ounce bottles as you can fit into one ziploc baggie (it's either a one or two quart bag). I'd sugget you check your airline's or airport's website for the actual bag size that's allowed. It has to go through the scanner by itself ... so be prepared to take the baggie out of your backpack or purse or carry-on luggage.
Have a great trip!

Wednesday, October 8th - A Late Afternoon Snack; We Don't Need It ... We're Not Hungry ... But By God We're Gonna Eat Anyway!
With tasty sandwedges digesting in our happy bellies, Jay and I made a decision to head over to the Magic Kingdom for a few hours. This was a bold departure from vacation tradition which dictates that we race each other to Epcot from the Beach Club Villas in order to begin stuffing our faces at the festival booths as soon as humanly possible.
We were a little concerned about what we might find at the Magic Kingdom what with all these strange things we heard about before leaving on our trip. Apparently Disney extended their "free" dining promotion through October 11th (Gawd help us ... will there be enough food for everyone!?); WDW also apparently began offering FL resident discounts to neighboring states (Ummm, isn't that a contradiction?); And there were ominous whispers of some bizarre, mysterious get-together known as "Fall Break."
Bravely we boarded a bus and rumbled off to meet our vacation destiny, taking the first of many self-portraits.
Smile! No matter how crowded the park is, it still beats being stuck in Stinktown!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/DSC03366.jpg
As an aside ... don't I have a funny nose?
When we arrived at the Magic Kingdom, Main Street was relatively deserted - we took this as a good sign and headed over to Tomorrowland to ride Buzz Lightyear, among other rides ... or so we thought.
All those people we thought weren't at the park ... oh, we found them ... they were everywhere. Space Mountain ... The Laugh Floor ... even The People Mover! There was crying in Fantasyland ... excessive sweating in Frontierland ... circular movements in Liberty Square ... and a noticeable lack of excitement in Adventureland.
Something strange was afoot at the Kingdom M. :lmao:
There was only one thing to do ... stop at Aloha Isle and try the fabled Dole Whip. Jay likes pineapple and I don't, so it took me a few minutes to decide what to order. And then I shocked the CM by requesting a swirlie.
"I beg your pardon, ma'am?"
"I'd like a chocolate / vanilla swirlie, please."
And then as soon as I heard the words come out of my mouth I wanted to laugh ... a swirlie ... oh my! I suddenly had a mental image of two burly CMs emerging from behind the counter wearing over-sized Mickey hands, fully prepared to drag me off to the nearest bathroom where I'd become intimately acquainted with a well-used toilet.
Yuck!
"May I please have a chocolate / vanilla soft serve combo?"
That did the trick!
Vanilla & Chocolate to the left; Dole Whip to the right!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/DSC03367.jpg
Jay has the following to say about the Dole Whip: "It was pineapple-y; tasty but a little too sweet."
Overall, the hubba says that he wouldn't go out of his way to have another Dole Whip. If he wanted dessert, Jay said he'd drag our sorry butts back to Raglan Road and request a double serving of bread pudding with a bottle of single malt scotch.
As for the "swirlie" it was fine ... soft serve is as soft serve does. I don't really enjoy eating sweets in hot weather and I hate eating ice cream outdoors because it melts more quickly than I can ingest it, so I didn't even finish mine before it turned to soup. I will say that I thought that both servings were generous portions, especially for $2.89.
Final opinion: by all means give Aloha Isle and the Dole Whip a try if you're curious to find out what all the fuss is about ... you'll never know for sure until you try it yourself. But we feel no need to ever visit them again and think they're entirely over-rated.
I think we would have been happier sharing a Mickey bar. :thumbsup2

I had a Dole Whip for the first time at Disneyland in May and agree that it was OK, but too sweet. I couldn't even finish mine and my sister finished it before riding Indiana Jones.
Ack! You started the report while I was still at WDW! I'm glad I got home finally so I can get started on my snarkfest comments! :rotfl2:
I didn't think you were serious when you said you had bottles of booze in your purse. It's like the booze version of Mrs. Olsen taking out a cup of coffee from her purse. Thanks again for the "SNL Ladies' Man Drink" -- Courvoisier. I haven't tried it yet. But I took a photo of it with the tiny martini glasses the truffles from PFTS came in. They make the tiny bottle look proportionate in size.
Good start so far. :)

[B][I]And then as soon as I heard the words come out of my mouth I wanted to laugh ... a swirlie ...
:lmao: That is a great image! I am imaging 2 burly Polynesian types with dark sunglasses and flowererd shirts to accompany the Mickey hands!

Thank you for saying that the dole whip is over rated......I thought I was the only one who thought that! :confused3
Okay ducking now so I don't get hit with all the pineapples the dole whip lovers are throwing! :scared1:
No one is throwing pineapples on this thread! We can't all like the same things ... I'm glad we tried it and now we know it's not for us.
I had my first Dole whip last year...
It was ok... and it was from the Poly...
But we get Dole Whips here at Jumpin Jacks during the summer.. all kinds of flavors so I don't know what the fuss was...
Now... if you could have gotten sprinkles for that swirlie... girlie.... :goodvibes :goodvibes
Yep ...
We felt the same way after trying our first Dole Whips...we wondered what all the brouhaha was about. :confused3
I hear you ...
I had a Dole Whip for the first time at Disneyland in May and agree that it was OK, but too sweet. I couldn't even finish mine and my sister finished it before riding Indiana Jones. Definitely don't see what the hype is all about. My sister really liked it and can't wait to get one when we go in January.
As much as Jay likes pineapple he's just not sold on the whip, which is fine. Like I said earlier, we don't really like eating dessert in the parks anyway ... too hot and stinky. ;)
I do believe they make a drink out of it at the Poly... may make it a bit more palatable with rum.... ;)

Rum, hmmmm? That might make it even more sweet. Maybe if someone added some kahlua?

Oooooooh, your truffles came in a miniature martini glass? I'm so jealous! I bet they would have tasted great with the cognac! If the waitress hadn't come up behind me just as I was pulling the booze out of my purse I'd have opened them right there at the table but she caught me at just the wrong time and I felt really stupid and tacky so that's why I didn't. We drank the scotch later last weekend and it was tasty!

As for the sandwedge ... it's my tribute to Homer Simpson ... he confuses an open faced club (a sand wedge) with an open faced club sandwich and the rest is stupid humor history. Jay and I always say sandwedge because we're dorks that way. But I think your explanation is pretty damn funny! :lmao:

Wednesday, October 8th - We Wants It ... We Needs It ... We Must Have It ... The WDW Florist Enables Our Inner Gollum!
Somewhere between the decision to cancel our dinner reservation at Victoria & Albert's and the complete and total meltdown of the American economy, I decided that we deserved some kind of special something to mark the beginning of our WDW trip. I'm a big dork in many ways, but perhaps no more so than with my childish delight of surprises left in WDW rooms - I'm still waiting to actually be surprised ... it's hard to feign wide-eyed astonishment when you're the person placing the order with the deliverer of prepaid gifties.
I spent many hours at my desk pretending to work while I painstakingly scoured the WDW Florist's website. I have to admit to a wee bit of disappointment ... they don't have nearly the variety of items for DINKS that they had even 18 months ago, but eventually I hit upon two things that I thought would be both fun and tasty. I called the florist from the office about a month before the trip, placed the order, and then proceeded to tease Jay for weeks about a zipzapgrabulous overpriced vacation surprise!
Now, here's the thing to remember about any order you may place with the WDW Florist. They will not deliver items to your resort so that you can be really surprised when you first walk into your room ... I assume that's because they don't want things getting misplaced in case guests end up in a different room at the last minute.
Fair enough. We actually think this is a pretty good policy, especially after returning to our studio early that evening to find a whole bunch of luggage waiting for us from Disney's Magical Express. This was disturbing on many levels ... we were already checked in and unpacked; we didn't use Magical Express; and our surname (at last check) wasn't @&#^%* (name changed for privacy). Those folks should be glad that Jay and I are honest injuns and that we called bell services immediately ... but something tells me that they never knew about the the little side trip their luggage took at Saratoga Springs Resort.
Anyway ... what I mean to say is that I think the resorts are slackerish about delivering those items in a timely fashion and what I have learned over the years is that you have to call the front desk and inquire whether or not they have an item or items in your name. And when the CM responds in the affirmative you must then request that said items be delivered to your room because for some reason the cognitive connection between the key words guest ... order ... item ... deliver ... doesn't seem to get made without some outside encouragement.
I will say this, however; the folks at SSR were actually pretty prompt with the delivery once I made the phone call. I think they showed up about half-an-hour after I contacted them, which isn't bad considering the size of the resort.
So ya wanna see the goodies ... finally?
To begin with, I chose something Halloweenie (tee hee) because we were skipping Mickey's Halloween party again this year - troughing wins out over a costume party every time! I selected something the florist calls A Tricky Treat. It's described as follows: this frightfully fun apple is dipped in caramel and fudge and then drizzled with a white chocolate web. You will scream with delight when you find a sneaky spider atop a festive orange rose trying to take a bite of your delicious apple!
This first picture is the front, with the florist card and the fun little sign at the top of the package which read: Trick or Treat, friend or foe, take a bite and then you'll know!
Take a look!
It's Festive!

This second picture gives a much better view of the apple itself. It was huge and really heavy ... later in the week we actually ate a portion of it for breakfast one morning. Someone gave this apple a mega-bath, first in caramel and then in chocolate - I mean it was coated in sugar-laden, tooth-decaying goodness. Truthfully, it really was too sweet and it was too much for us to finish in one sitting, which means that half of it spoiled before our trip was over. But it was still tasty and fun ... I loved the orange rose which was spinkled with gold glitter and stayed fresh and pretty for an entire week.
Your teeth will never be the same.

The other item that I ordered was actually more appropriate for us and something we enjoyed throughout the length of our stay. This is called Treasured Treats and is described as follows: Truly a treasure of wonderful treats to give as a gift or enjoy all for yourself. Four small liquors, cheese, crackers, pretzels and more inside a chest you'll want to keep for your treasures at home as well.
That's right ... this giftie included booze! How could I pass it up?
Trunk o' Treats!

Free the Treats!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/18.jpg
So what do we have?
Four bottles perfect for air travel: Cognac, Irish Cream, Vodka, and Rum; chocolate coins; mixed nuts; dipping pretzels; mustard; cheese spread; and overly seeded crackers. The trunk actually was pretty cool, too - it's like a miniature steamer trunk and we packed some of our breakables in it on the way home and it was perfect!
We enjoyed the Bailey's one night mixed with some milk ... added the vodka to cranberry juice one afternoon ... gave the cognac to BriarRosie ... and sucked down the rum on our return flight. We didn't finish all the snacks but those that we had were quite tasty, especially the pretzels and mustard. The chocolate coins actually came in handy on the flight home as we somehow managed to end up seated in front of the only screaming toddler on the whole damn plane. At one point I was inspired to offer some to her parents as a potential distraction.
Score one for the childless cranky crohn! Shiny things are great ... shiny, sweet things are even better ... that kid was quiet in no time flat. :lmao:
And there you have it! Stay tuned for a real review sometime this weekend ... food and booze galore at Raglan Road, which we still highly recommend!
Thanks for reading!

Hey! Boss! The sandwedge!
since I probably have heard more about you recently than about anyone else I have never met (who isn't running for political office that is), I will continue reading.
Well, I always enjoy reading your posts and am honored to have you reading along. Hopefully you won't be too bored ... and hopefully you didn't hear all the awful things.

No hint dropping intending ... I was just poking fun at the way things are. And actually we were both surprised in May 2007 by some really good cruise friends when we were at WDW for our anniversary, so I guess I misunderestimated my "waiting to be surprised" comment. ;) :lmao:

I like the orange swirl over at the orange place by the Tiki Birds... I know it has sunshine in the name, but I get confused with the place over at the Land... :confused3
The orange swirly by the Tiki Birds is called a Citrus Swirl (yummy), and over at Beaches and Cream they have a delightful little thing called Frozen Sunshine (yummier by far).
As a devotee of all things orange and vanilla, I want to know what the one at the Land is all about! :yay:
And Brenda, that trunk looked loverly - I'm a lightweight when it comes to booze, but I can handle the sweet creamy Irish-y kind (aka Bailey's, my favorite), and spreadable cheese alongside fancy crackers just makes life better, don't you think?

And then I shocked the CM by requesting a swirlie.
I would have known what you meant by wanting a swirlie but up here in CT we call them a twist. I have never had a Dole Whip but that is definately one I am going to try, even if it's just to say I had one.
Dole whip with Alcohol!!!!!!
Yes!!! It's called the Pineapple Dream. They have it at the pool @ the Poly. It's Dole Whip + Southern Comfort + Butterscotch Schnapps + Captain Morgan.
Yummy sounds good
I just had to mention this ...
Next Friday is Halloween and I don't know about your city, but in St. Louis the traffic is awful ... highways clogged with people tryinng to get home in time to take their little ghoulies out for free candy.
So Jay and I always meet somewhere for dinner rather than spend two hours in traffic trying to get home.
Next Friday we're going to try a new sushi place in Chesterfield called Tsunami. They have an awesome menu including items like Squid Viscious and Marilyn Monroll. :lmao:
We're planning on taking the camera and writing a review that we'll post to the blog.
Just thought you'd like to know. ;)
I'll be sure to read it
To begin with, I chose something Halloweenie (tee hee) because we were skipping Mickey's Halloween party again this year - troughing wins out over a costume party every time!

Hey kids! I knew I had some pictures of that apple as we were enjoying it a few days later, so I'm going to post them here for you to ogle until I get the Raglan Road review posted (keep your fingers crossed for this weekend ... I'm in the middle of that damn WDW cold that snuck into my suitcase and my nose feels like its going to fall off my face ... :lmao: ).
Apple-y goodness for everyone!
BTW, we think that the apple itself was a Granny Smith because there was some nice tartness that helped to offset some of the overall sweetness of this treat.

It wouldn't be a Brenda report without Jay's knees exposed. I remember seeing his knees in almost every F&W grazing shot she took last year. Mostly because she'd balance the plate there.

No ostriches were harmed in the making of the Duelling Jambalayas. One was seafood and the other was pork. The ostrich sacrificed itself for a different tasty dish altogether.

Wednesday, October 8th - Let us Celebrate the Start of Vacation with the Consumption of Wieners and Whiskey and Fish and Mash and Beer and Dessert and Scotch and ... You get the Idea, Right?
As is the case with many WDW restaurants, the DIS-opinions about Raglan Road are mixed at best, but our opinion has always been two thumbs up. This was our third visit to Raglan Road and we enjoyed it just as much this time around as we did on our first visit two years ago. We always book a late ADR for dinner so that we can enjoy the band while we stuff our faces. An 8:30 reservation shouldn't be difficult to make when you're staying at a resort directly across the lake from the restaurant ... unless it rains or something.
**Cue sudden rainstorm**
The clouds had been piling up all afternoon but by the time the sun went down we thought we were out of danger. Ha ha ha! That's how the October weather works in Stinktown, but this is Florida you nit and for all intents and purposes it's still summer and it will rain on your parade whenever it chooses.
Let that be a lesson to you the next time you're taking a pre-dinner self-portait in your snug, dry vacation home.
Take the picture already; I need a drink!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/19.jpg
From our Grandstand room we had about a five-to-seven minute walk to the boat dock where we decided to wait for a water-taxi to take us over to Downtown Disney. The rain started as soon as our little boat pulled away from the dock and it pretty much continued with varying intensity until we made it to the restaurant 15 minutes past our scheduled ADR time. The skies really opened up just after we walked off the boat and we took shelter under the awnings near the Pooh store until we felt like we could brave the weather again without showing up at Raglan Road totally soaked to the skin. It's like this: Jay and I are those people who don't buy ponchos and we always fail to bring an umbrella on vacation ... that's just inviting bad weather and since when do we need to worry about rain at WDW in October, anyway?
Since this trip, that's when, because it rained every evening for the first six nights of our vacation. We had to check the calendar more than once to convince ourselves that it wasn't really June.
As an aside, patrons and CMs alike at Pooh's stall were no doubt very pleased by our departure since all we did was make childish poop jokes while waiting for the rain to ease up. The best perhaps was wondering aloud if we could purchase a Pooh Pooh Platter. :lmao:
The good news is that we finally made it to Raglan Road, a little damp and very hungry. We only had to wait about five minutes to be seated but this was the first of many instances where I had to exercise the "we're not sitting there" option. They tried to seat us in the back bar, behind a pillar that totally blocked a view of the stage and which had a row of high, round bar tables in front of it. I stopped the "seater" and said we either wanted the main dining room or a high table - her choice, but we weren't taking that crappy table in the back.
She looked a little dumbfounded that we would refuse the table but wandered off to make sure we could sit somewhere else and then came back and seated us at the high table which we'd asked about and which provided a terrific view of Raglan Road's main dining room along with an unobstructed view of the stage where the band would shortly begin their set.
Right away I ordered my favorite Raglan Road drink: Jay'Gail Sangria or as they used to call it way back in 2006 ... Celtic Sangria.
Tart, fruity goodness from your friends in Ireland
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/20.jpg
Looks a little weak, doesn't it? This wasn't nearly as good as it has been in years past ... still tasty but definitely lacking that "punch" that I'd grown accustomed to. Sometimes the bartender just isn't up to snuff when it comes to mixology. For the curious among you, the drink is described as follows on Raglan Road's specialty drink menu: a refreshing blend of Strongbow Cider, Peach Schnapps, fruit liquors, and squeezes. I'm still waiting to find out what the heck a "squeeze" is when it comes to this drink. :confused3
Jay was smarter than me - he usually is - and he stuck with beer, ordering a Boddingtons, one of our all-time favorite beers ever since we tried it at Rose and Crown back in 2003. :thumbsup2
Mmmmmm, beer!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/23.jpg
Since we've dined here before, choosing our food for the evening was pretty easy, but along with our appetizer and entree selections we stunned our waitress by ordering a beer sampler. Hey chickie, we've got a $50 gift certificate to burn through, the night is young, and vacation is just starting - we're here for the long haul!
Mmmm, beer times four!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/21.jpg
From near to far in the above picture: Strongbow Cider, Smithwicks, Tucher Hefe Weisen, and Guinness.
This was our own creation. Raglan Road now offers a third option for beer flights which is the "create-yer-own-beery-goodness" sampler or The Cream of the Crop. They also still offer two pre-selected beer flights if you don't want to have to make your own decision ... all for the bargain price of nine dollars.
The only member of our sampler that we'd never tried previously was the Strongbow and we liked it quite a bit ... it's a little sweet but refreshing and light, something that I could definitely see us drinking during the hot, sultry Stinktown summer months.
And then our appetizer showed up, something we've ordered before but which we think pairs ever-so-well with lots of beer.
The Dalkey Duo
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/22.jpg
We love these little snausages, which are dipped in batter and then deep fried. Ahhh, artery clogging goodness with a side dish of spicy mustard. They can be a little on the greasy side, but that's why we wash them down with beer. We took a picture of a sliced open dalkey dog to give everyone a better idea of what they're made of ... smallish sausages and lots of batter - double yum!
Dissected dalkey
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/24.jpg
About this time the band began playing and they were just as good as we remembered. They had some new songs mixed into their set as well as some old favorites which we were able to sing along to. For my dinner I always order the fish and chips ... it's something that I can't really get here at home unless I eat at Long John Silvers and I'm not even sure that qualifies as real fish.
Maybe this should be called Chips and Fish?
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/25.jpg
There's no way I could eat two pieces of fish, but it does seem as though this entree is all about french fries and someone in the kitchen added the fish at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Despite the small portion size it was a very tasty piece of cod ... flaky on the inside, lightly battered on the outside, and with just the right amount of saltiness. All of this was enhanced by my horrifying cheap yellow mustard dipping habit!
Jay ordered the restaurant's version of bangers and mash: Bang Bang's Bangers.
Looks like sausage and 'taters to me!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/26.jpg
Here is the official description for this dish: homemade gourmet Irish sausages served over onion and mashed potatoes, then topped with a red wine onion reduction. Jason said that the mashed 'taters were smooth and creamy and in spite of the menu's claim, there was Guinness beef stew spooned over his snausage. He really liked the entire dish, saying that it was quite tasty.
At this point we were out of all beverages and growing thirsty. We always drink a lot of water with our meals, especially if alcohol is involved, and our waitress was a little remiss in refilling our glasses. Once we flagged her down and reminded her she was better about keeping the water spicket open. Her service overall was pretty good although I have to admit that I found it a bit odd to be called sweetie by someone who was obviously younger than me.
When she reappeared with the water pitcher we took the opportunity to ask for the dessert menu and the whiskey / scotch menu. Along with beer flights Raglan Road also offers both Irish Whiskey and Single Malt Scotch flights. Jay and I chose a Single Malt Scotch flight that had two scotches we'd never tried before. When the waitress came back about five mintues later with our flight she started naming the booze and then I stopped her, saying that I didn't think that it was correct ... that we'd ordered a different sampler. She went back to the bar to check and then came back with a sheepish smile on her face. She'd put the order in correctly but the bartender read it wrong and rather than pouring us the Single Malt Flight that we wanted, he'd poured an Irish Whiskey Flight.
End result?
Our waitress told us to enjoy an Irish Whiskey sampler on the house! :cool1:
A few minutes later she came back with the Scotch sampler we'd ordered and said she hoped we'd be able to walk out under our own power once we were finished. She obviously didn't know with whom she was speaking, did she? ;)
Here are pictures of our final boozes of the day:

Oban 14-year
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/30.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/31.jpg
There was a noticeable difference between the two flights. The Irish whiskeys were much harsher; when Ralph Wiggum says "it tastes like burning" I think he is referring to Irish whiskey. The Scotch flight was much more to our preference and all three samples were smooth and clean tasting with no mouth-burn. Our favorite was the Oban 14-year, which we ended up ordering later in the trip one night with dessert.
And speaking of dessert, we were total pigs and ordered two because I wanted to try something new. Jay opted for the traditional Raglan Road dessert, Ger's Bread & Butter Pudding which is served with Butterscotch and Creme Anglaise Sauces.
Stuff yer face with that!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/33.jpg
Still as good as we remember it ... this was warm and sweet and chock full o' raisins. And the mix of both sauces poured over it ... this sort of devilish combination should be outlawed. I'm not typically a big fan of bread pudding but this is one of the best desserts I've ever eaten. If you dine at Raglan Road save room for the bread pudding - it's that good!
The new dessert that we decided to try was called Triple Your Pleasure. It was three different chocolate desserts: White Chocolate Mousse, Dark Chocolate Mousse, and a little Chocolate Shake.
Needs more chocolate!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/oybolshoi/October%202008/32.jpg
I thought this was really good, especially with the scotch! I've said it before and I'll say it again ... scotch and chocolate are a win-win combination. As for the actual desserts ... the white chocolate mousse had a great flavor and was very light, but the texture was a little gritty and that made it hard to enjoy. The dark chocolate mousse was very good although more thick than a mousse should be in my opinion. My favorite was the shake, which was cold and thick and full of milk chocolate-y goodness.
So, all in all we had a fine, boozie dinner at Raglan Road to start off our vacation. The food was really tasty and the live music was terrific. Overall the service was good, if a little spotty at times. We really enjoy Raglan Road and will continue to patronize their establishment whenever we can. As a note to those of you who are interested in dining while the band plays, they perform Monday-Saturday at 9PM and again at 10:30PM. For us, the band is a huge part of the attraction - they play great Irish folk music and create a really fun and sometimes slightly rowdy atmosphere.
Give Raglan Road a try if you have the chance - good food, good music, and good times!

You really do need to get over there - later in the evening so that you can enjoy the music. I'm not sure if I can still recommend that Sangria though ... I'm hoping that the bartender was just having an off night because it was really weak.

Well, now that they've killed the AC you can stay for the music - it's a big draw for us.
It's funny that you mentioned the scallop forest because we talked about ordering that, but I'd never really heard anyone talk about it and we were a little leery of how they might taste in a pub environment.
Next time.
And I just have to say ... PI was so depressing when we were there and we shouted a few Kunglalooshes at the dark windows of the AC every time we passed by. Still makes me sad to think that Disney was so willing to scrap something so many people enjoyed so much.

Did you know that along with being the name of a fabulous snausage appetizer (my favorite!), Dalkey is the name of one of the many little villages that makes up greater Dublin? And further, that Bono lives there? (And for those of you who've never heard it said out loud and may have wondered, it's pronounced "dah-key", the "l" is silent.)
That is all. Carry on.

She and Jon were in Vegas in August and now Jay's aunt wants her to come back in April for a slot tournament. :lmao: When I told her that Jay and I are taking a Disney cruise next October she sounded like she wanted to come ... :scared1: I talked her out of it ... if she wasn't happy at WDW she'd be miserable on a ship. And I don't think she'd understand why so many strangers would refer to her as Grimace every time they spotted her wandering around the Magic. :rotfl2:
Thanks for reading!
We LOVED Raglan Road too. I had the Shepherd's Pie and dh got the Guinness Stew. Yum yum yum!!! We thought it was great and will definitely go back in the future. Lucky you got that gift certificate...I got in too late!
We totally lucked into the GC ... I think I nabbed it around lunchtime on a day where the firewalls were down at work and I saw a post about it here on the DIS.
Thanks for reading!
Mmmmmm... Raglan Road!
Carry on.
Hey there Litebrite! We always wondered what Dalkey represented, so thanks for edumacating us. No idea that the "l" was silent ... we've been mispronouncing for as long as we've been ordering it. D'OH! :headache:
Wow, bonus liquor! That was better than getting "dreamed" in the parks! I don't think I've ever had whisky that didn't taste like burning, all TN and KY bourbon burns like fire. We loved, loved RR, too. (And if I find time to get to the picture thing you can read all about it!)
 I never thought about bonus liquor being better than a dream but for us that's probably true. You need to try some scotch, it can still burn but less so ... and not at all when paired with certain yummy foods.
I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed Raglan Road ... wasn't that your husband's birthday? Were they able to do anything special for him?
I showed DH the picture of the bangers and mashed and he said, "Yeah, we have to eat there!":thumbsup2 So we're on for April! Is the dancer there every night? I know my daughter would love that, so I'm going to shoot for a later reservation so we can catch the band. Good thing we're staying at SSR, after all the beer-y goodness we won't have far to go! Thanks for the great review!:goodvibes
Hey Lori, how ya doing? I hope you enjoy RR when you dine there in April - be sure to come back to let us know how it goes. The dancer is supposed to be there every night that the band plays, but she doesn't come out a whole lot. I think in two hours we saw her two or three times. Your best bet is to get there as close to nine as possible and then you'll be likely to see her at least twice.

Brenda, believe it or not RR was one of the few placed that didn't acknowledge dh's birthday. I hated to bring it to our waitress's attention since she seemed so spacey anyway. I think the CM had it on the general reservation and Spoodles and Akershus more than made up for the lack of celebration at RR. It was okay, b/c Cirque was FABULOUS before our meal!

Hi Cass! Thanks for coming over to take a read - glad you enjoyed it! As for Kira, we've seen younger kids there, even later in the evening when the band starts playing; I think a lot of it depends on how late you'd want to keep her up and whether or not she'd enjoy the atmosphere.

I'm still not a huge bread pudding fan ... but when it comes with sauce like this one does I usually like it more. First time I ever had bread pudding I liked was in New Orleans ... bread pudding souffle with whiskey cream sauce. :cloud9: And the whiskey wasn't the only reason I liked it. :lmao:

As is the case with many WDW restaurants, the DIS-opinions about Raglan Road are mixed at best, but our opinion has always been two thumbs up. This was our third visit to Raglan Road and we enjoyed it just as much this time around as we did on our first visit two years ago. We always book a late ADR for dinner so that we can enjoy the band while we stuff our faces. An 8:30 reservation shouldn't be difficult to make when you're staying at a resort directly across the lake from the restaurant ... unless it rains or something.
And I was so close to the band stage when I went, I was hoping I'd get out of there before they came to play and drown out any conversation I was having with my friends.
**Cue sudden rainstorm**
It's like this: Jay and I are those people who don't buy ponchos and we always fail to bring an umbrella on vacation ... that's just inviting bad weather and since when do we need to worry about rain at WDW in October, anyway?
I had an umbrella AND a poncho packed; No rain at all during my trip. A first for me!
As an aside, patrons and CMs alike at Pooh's stall were no doubt very pleased by our departure since all we did was make childish poop jokes while waiting for the rain to ease up. The best perhaps was wondering aloud if we could purchase a Pooh Pooh Platter. :lmao:
Color me immature. I would have been making those jokes, too.
:confused3
Yes, looks like a very transparent drink. I like the "squeeze" thing. "I'm gonna hug him and squeeze him and call him George".
Wow, you never tried Strongbow? That's at Rose and Crown, too.
Those snausages look great, but I'd have to share for sure. I haven't tried the scallop forest for the same reason.
When I want my fish and chip fix, I go again to the take out window next to Rose and Crown.
Where did I have that again? Wait for it....Rose and Crown.
I'm beginning to call this Raglan Road report: Deja Food. :rotfl2:
At this point we were out of all beverages and growing thirsty. We always drink a lot of water with our meals, especially if alcohol is involved, and our waitress was a little remiss in refilling our glasses. Once we flagged her down and reminded her she was better about keeping the water spicket open. Her service overall was pretty good although I have to admit that I found it a bit odd to be called sweetie by someone who was obviously younger than me.
The sweetie thing is also ok if the waitress has a beehive and snaps her gum. Kiss my grits. ;)
She obviously didn't know with whom she was speaking, did she? ;)
Only you can manage to get free booze due to server error. :thumbsup2
Sounds like I'd want to try the Obi Wan Kenobe thing if I had the nerve. ;)
There's a reason I liked Jay. He has great taste in dessert ordering (well, at Raglan Road at least. I still don't know what his Mystery Dessert was at Todd English's bluezoo™). I won't order anything other than this bread pudding at Raglan Road.
Believe it or not, I'd still go for the bread pudding over this dessert!
Give Raglan Road a try if you have the chance - good food, good music, and good times!
If I make it to Downtown Disney next trip. I haven't stepped foot in DTD since my trip last year. Wasn't any reason to do so with the AC closed.

Raglan Rose looks very yummy. I may have to try it if I make it to Downtown Disney on my next trip. I like Irish-style pubs. It seems as though we need to make a stop at RR on our May trip. Randy went there for a beer or two in June (before I flew down to meet him) and he loved the atmosphere. I think we might even take the kids, our oldest is learning to play the violin, loves Celtic music and wants to fiddle. Our youngest will be dancing right along. As for me, anything that is a reminder of my days at my favorite Irish bar in Boston is good for me. Great installment!

Never had a reason to try it before. We're not really cider people, whether it's alcoholic or not. But this was good ... I think it would be a great summer drink.

One of the reasons we order the Dalkey is because it's listed as an appetizer for two. I think it would be way too much for just one person to eat.
I agree - the fish and chips are definitely better at R&C and Harry Ramsden's fishie joint, but this wasn't bad as an alternative.
The sweetie thing is also ok if the waitress has a beehive and snaps her gum. Kiss my grits. ;)

I'll have to check with Jay about his dessert ... I think it was the banana-ey thing. And DTD isn't the same without PI ... it's really kind of sad.
Great review. :thumbsup2 The band at Raglan Road sounds pretty cool. I love Celtic music, but not sure if there would be much there I would eat.
Thanks for reading! The band is awesome, that's for sure. Raglan Road does have a lot of heavier / comfort food type items on their menu, but they also have soups and salads. Or maybe you could just go for a drink and dessert some evening?
I stay away from the Dis for a week and look how much I miss. Your TR has started off great! I LOVE the notion of sneaking those wee bottles of booze onto the plane. There's just that toiletries vs. liquor dilemma to deal with.

We have one here that is known for serving more Jameson than any other establishment in the world (including Ireland) (http://www.the-local.com/gallery.html). It is a beautiful pub and they have ok food, but no snausages!
Thanks for coming over to check out what we've posted ... so far. And we don't have to worry about the toiletries because we check those in our luggage. No sweat!
And if you like Irish-style pubs then you must try RR ... I think you'd enjoy it quite a bit!
Then you should definitely go there and take the kids - it's a really fun atmosphere. We've seen customers get up and dance jigs before and we've joined in on sing-alongs. It's a hoot!
As usual, the desserts really caught MG's eye. Is there a restaurant at WDW that serves only desserts? If so, count me in B.
Thanks for the silent desk giggles again. Much appreciated. :)
(My smilies aren't working today).
Hiya Nancy! Thanks for reading and there are several places you could go just for dessert. I'll be happy to tell you all about them before the cruise next year ... come spend a day at WDW with us! :cool1:
The bread pudding is amazing. Just might be the best dessert I've ever eaten!
It is fabulous, isn't it? Although I still think Commander's Palace Bread Pudding Souffle w/Whiskey Cream Sauce may be the best dessert I've ever had.
Ever.

Great review of Raglan Road. I also had the JayGail Sangria there earlier this month and mine was also much weaker than it was last year. To be fair though, you probably didn't need a strong drink considering all the booze you still had to come!
Thanks for reading! I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who noticed a difference in the Sangria. It just didn't have as good a flavor as it used to - it was almost watery. Bah! I can maker a better Sangria at home with my eyes closed. ;)
Brenda; Yeah, I've finally caught up! (the hospital is supposed to have wifi-yeah, right.) Anyhoo, thank you so much for the postcards- the monsters love them! They still reread them everyday, too cute (really, after they're sleeping and I've had a Bailey's, I think it's cute, anyway.) So looking forward to reading more- can't wait to hear about the smackdown!
Nicole
Hey there Nicole! Hope everything is going OK for you and the family. So glad to know the postcards arrived and the kids enjoyed them ... seems like half the postcards I mail from WDW never get to where they're supposed to be, so it's nice to know you got yours.
Thanks for reading!
My hubby is Scottish and loves Scotch (go figure). I called him over as I read your review of Raglan Road. I think he drooled on my head when I mentioned the 14 year old.
Bwaaaahahahaha! :lmao: I'm sorry, I shouldn't laugh but the mental image of your hubby drooling over the top of your head while you read food porn was just too amusing. Thanks for stopping by to read, Ann; hope to see more of you around the thread this time. :goodvibes
BTW - that Oban was awesome! We can't wait to buy a bottle to savor here at the house!
