Eveyone knows I am a Pentax DSLR person, but I am still a big fan of the Canon p&s lines. I had a coupe "A" line models, a S1 IS, and have a S2 IS. The new SX1 IS replaces the S5 IS and looks pretty impressive. The CMOS "might" even improve low light performance to the point where people on the fence deciding DSLR vs. Bridge might not need to make the jump. There will probably be new models from the other brands in the coming weeks, but they have raised the bar IMO. The only downside for them is it could hurt Rebel sales.

They also introduced a CCD version called the SX10 IS and the G10. http://www.dpreview.com/news/0809/08091703canon_sx1is_sx10is.asp

Here is what dpreview says:
UPDATE: While we haven't heard this officially from Canon it does appear that the new CMOS SX1 IS won't be available in North America.

Why would they do that?

CMOS is inherently noisier. Canon just makes it work better. Great R&D. :) But I'd still go with a larger sensor over a smaller instead of worrying about ccd versus cmos right now. :)

I am figuring that there must be some beneficial reason for them putting a CMOS in their top of the line bridge camera. I doubt we will see much larger sensors in the superzooms b/c that would mean they have to put bigger glass and that would make it too heavy for the target audience.

I wonder if they are thinking about no NA sales due to the Rebels? I believe that the Rebel line has the best sales here compared to other areas of the world.

I know CMOS is cheaper than CCD (always a benefit for them). Not sure why it's not coming to the U.S. I wouldn't think the Rebels would be an issue. That's just strange.
