Hello everyone!
For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

Aloha everyone, I started the new week for Mel. Someone either remind me next week, or start it on your own if I forget.

Hi all!
Once again, Auburn Football had my heartrate in zone 5. I know I should be asleep but I am still trying to get the taste out of my mouth. 3 -2! It was shameful. I doubt I have ever been so embarassed at a win.
Marsha - I am training for Goofy and I am about 3 weeks in to the program I mapped out. I have 2 half marathons this fall so I worked my plan by morphing Hal Higdon's intermediate II with an old TNT program and then wrapping them around the races I already had scheduled.
I don't do back to back long runs but I have three runs in a row without rest every week. I only run 4 days a week so it takes some modification to make most training plans work for me.

Last week you gave me some advice on my running. Due to kid craziness I am just responding. THANKS! I did slow down and that helped but I think the biggest thing for me was the mental trigger that you discussed.
I am running with the Nike+iPod program and I always just put it on a distance program. I became so focused on reaching that distance that I just stopped whenever I got there.
So yesterday I just used a basic program (no distance) and ran 3 miles without stopping and without getting winded. So thanks again for the great advice.

Good morning everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself and bring myself into your team. I found the DIS boards through the DCL boards, but recently followed someone over to the WISH board to join the Biggest Loser challenge. And now I've discovered that there are running threads and all sorts of great stuff over here! I can't wait to get involved!
My name is Tracy, I live in Vermont, and I'm currently training through TNT to run the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco 5 weeks from today. Anyone else out there running Nike?
I did my first of two 20-milers yesterday, so today is my recovery day, taking it easy, playing on the computer. :cool1:
I'm excited to have found you guys. I'm going to request to join one of the mileage tracking teams, too...
Have a great day everyone! I'm looking forward to getting to know you all better!

Hope everyone is doing great.
Got in a great 10K today even though our humidity is through the roof but at least the sun wasn't shining so we made out OK!!!!

OK, so I'm back to report.
I got in 6 miles this morning. I was thinking 5 when I hit the start button on my Garmi, but just kept going and ended up with 6. Felt pretty good and did thos 6 walking miles with an average 13:47 pace. Nice breeze right in my face on the way back to the house.
I have decided that I like my shadow alot when the sun is behind me and low in the sky. I look nice and tall and thin!!! and my shadow is beating me on my way and I'm beating it on the way back. (Just one of those weird things you think about when out walking -just ask LynnG and Michelle of my weird thoughts while walking. Miles around 7/8/9 are weird miles for me during Half Marathon races. At those points it is a mental thing for me.)
BTW: So far after 7 weeks, the weight loss total is 13lbs as of this morning. I know I said I would get a new bike after losing 10, but that was too soon for the money situation. Maybe it might be around the 15-20lbs range for the bike. Whatever works I guess.
I have started to buy the supplies I need for the Jan 09 WiSH Pop meet. I got the name tag holders that can be used in many ways like a pin/clip/ or clip on a lanyard or something like that. Hopefully people will hold on to them and use them for future meets.
It was raining in New Hampshire this AM , so their drying the track. Nascar is almost ready to start.

Debra - congrats on the 10 miler! :thumbsup2
Tracyz - Welcome! I did the Nike 1/2 2 years ago. I enjoyed it, even though as Mooshu said, it was hills, hills and hills! But seeing the guys in the tuxes at the end with the bling was worth it!
Although I'm not an expert by any means - here's my running tip of the day:
Don't go out to start your run when it's 94 degrees and humid! I did that today and felt like a wet dish rag. I didn't get up to run before I went to church, so had to do it after. The plan was for 5 miles, but I stopped at 2.
Finished the 2 miles in 28:08. I was soaked. The sun was hot, it was humid - YUCK. If it was a race day, I would have just kept walking to the finish, but by the end of the 2 miles, I was out of water, so I decided to call it a day. I hope it's not this hot next week for the Philly Distance Run.
I also have to say that I'm already regretting my decision not to go to WDW for marathon weekend this year. Reading about everyone's training and meets scheduled and water station volunteers, I'm missing you guys already. :sad1: But I'll be in Phoenix the week after WDW for the RnR 1/2 there, plus a little vacation afterwards. But after this year I've already decided that from now on, WDW marathon weekend will be top choice.

I'm glad to hear that the toughest part of the marathon is the first half, rather than the second! That's good news. I am expecting hills. Living in Vermont, there are lots of hills everywhere for me to train on. The group I've been doing my long runs with has been finding flat, flat, flat places to do their long runs, and it started to concern me so this weekend for my 20 I decided to do it from my house instead (hills, hills, and more hills). Sounds like I'll be glad I did!!
I did a 6 miler today with a friend. It was muggy and she was having trouble with her athsma, so we walked a lot of it, which made it a perfect recovery run after my long run yesterday.

We're being invaded by Tracy's!!! :lmao: Tigger Jeff, where are you?
Hey, whatever Mooshu says about her training, don't listen to her. She's CRAZY!!! But then again, so am I. Marcia usually says, it's only a half marathon, no need to train. So does our other friend Karen.
As for me. I went out for an easy 18 miler this morning. Average pace 10:05 per mile.
No tradewinds at all, some VOG. HOT is an understatement.
Just finished lunch and a Jamba Juice. Now I'm off to ice bath. Have to go work the afternoon shift for my daughters school Huli-Huli chicken sale (rotisserie chicken).
Tracy, are you reclining today, watching those cars spin in circles?

From Debra~Howard: So, did you set out to push yourself on this run, or did it just kind of happen. I mean, I know you've been pushing yourself (within reason, paying attention to your hip flexor). So I guess I'm asking how the stars aligned to give you your best run of your life?
Debra~ Hi, I just pushed myself each mile and felt good enough to do it. I didn't set out to have such a good run. It just happened!
Yesterday I ran:
Miles: 13
Time: 2:12:49
Pace: 10:13
Splits:
9:19
9:16
9:07
9:03
8:59
9:53
10:05
10:10
10:09
10:37
11:37
11:49
12:43
I ran with Judy's DH (Charlie) up in Ridgeville, CT (their half marathon course). It was great and I had a great leisurely run with a good friend. It wasn't easy, just leisurely. :thumbsup2 I didn't push too hard... didn't want to or need to.
Have a great week everyone!

Hi everyone!
Sorry I haven't checked in for a while, senior year of college is crazy but the running is helping me to stay sane. I'm now less than one month away from my big 10k. For some reason I feel like doing a 10k rather than just 5ks psychologically allows me to call myself a runner. If things go well and I keep increasing my distance I should be able to do a half this spring.
I also did my first job application. It's for Teach for America and that would be my first choice. I've studied education policy and really feel I could make a difference. So please send the prayers and pixie dust this way. I find out if I get an interview on Sep. 25.
Best,
Jennifer

Tracy: Ooo ooo I'm on facebook too pirate: Elisabeth Claire Burch @ LSU. Friends make me :)
TracyZ::welcome: How long have you been running?
Terri: Then when am I supposed to run?? :confused3 Sorry that it's like that up north though!
Jennifer: Running is keeping me sane through college (well now grad school) also. I'm with you on the 10K vs 5K. I just prefer the distance. What's your major?
:yay:
We have our plane tickets for Marathon weekend!!! This year will be shorter than other trips, so we are prioritizing. woo. My running has been going. and going. and going. Today I went for a swim. After a set I decided I was tired of getting my face wet, so I decided to doggy paddle. Who knew it could be so exhausting! Whew. off for another fun week....
happy running!

Thats funny, I don't think I am looking forward to that game quite as much as I usually do. As a matter of fact, it makes me a little queasy just thinking about facing LSU.

You did better than me! I also didn't get up early, and had a lot of other commitments today, and I just couldn't make myself get out there in the heat & humidity. I am going to give it another try tomorrow - it is supposed to be a little better then. The forecast for next week looks OK - 77 and sunny, hopefully with much lower humidity!
My youngest daughter turned 8 years old today, and we celebrated yesterday with a "circus party" at the School of Circus Arts here in Philly. The kids did juggling, "globe" and some aerials work on trapeze and rope; they also put them through their paces with some warmups and an obstacle course. It was a lot of fun, and much less preparation than what I usually have to do for a party in the house.
TracyZ - Welcome to our corner of the Dis! This is a great group.
I don't have a facebook account yet, but I have some other friends bugging me to join as well, so I may just jump in soon.
Have a great week everyone! I only seem to be able to jump in once or twice a week these days.

I found a recipe for Huli Huli Chicken in a magazine this summer and made it, my whole family loved it!
Yesterday was supposed to be a running day for me but by the time we returned from church/lunch/shopping it was time for the Pats game and well, I didn't run and cheered my boys on instead. DH and I are going to run together as soon as I get the kids to school so we'll make up for it today.
Happy Monday everyone!

Hey all, :wave2:
Boomdocker and Allie are coming from the UK to walk/run the WDW half marathon in January 2009. We are really worried that we are going to embarrass ourselves and finish last or even worse get picked up by the sweepers!! :rotfl:
I see that a few of you walk/jog so can you share some advice on the timings. How realistic is a speed/power walk? I have visions of us being the last 2 sad walkers at the back and everyone else running at Olympic pace. Can you reassure us there will be other walkers or walker/joggers?
We are looking forward to this and would like to relax knowing we are are in the company of others of similar ability. :cheer2:

Debra: WTG on the 10 miler! Woo Hoo! And Toll House, yummm! I love that recipe though last week I tried a different choc chip cookie recipe from allrecipes.com (love that site!) and it was a good contender. And yes DH is also doing the Half.
Mooshu: I'm doing the Half in January, my first half ever. I am using John Binghams Marathoning for Mortals Run/Walk Half Plan. It really should begin in October (it is 14 weeks long) but I am just doing Week One each week in September to be doing something consistant.
Boomdocker: Welcome! I have never done the Half at Disney but from reading I know there are runners, walkers and I think lots in between LOL! I am planning to Run/Walk it. Right now in training I do a Run 3 minutes/Walk 2 minutes but the program I am on eventually moves to a Run 4 minutes/Walk 1 minute. I am not fast, usually around a 13 minute mile.

Carrie we need a little icon showing "person with mop/bucket". We also had lots of rain and a leak or two to contend with (or should I say, for DH to contend with)--nothing too bad.
wellesleyprincess Good luck on your job search. Here's your pixie dust! pixiedust:
I managed to get out yesterday between rain showers to run outside for the first time in 1-2 months. Hoo boy! Why am I doing this again? Why do I feel like lead in concrete when I run outdoors, but not nearly so bad indoors (yeah, yeah--I hear everyone: controlled climate, softer running surface, etc). I managed to complete my 3.2 miles in 30:08. It seems to be taking longer than I though to get my running legs back--or maybe I never had them and it's just taking me longer to remember that!!!

I survived my run this morning. Ran 5 miles, pace was 11:15. This is the farthest I have ran since I started my start all over program. :lmao:
Knee hurt near the end, but I never was reduced to limping. :rolleyes1 I ordered one of those Cho-Pat Dual Action Knee things. Hope it gets here soon!
I also ordered one of the newer styles of Skirt Sports GymGirl Ultras. Hope this one doesn't ride up and give me chub rub. I'll report back on my findings.

Shan - great job on the 5 miles!
Boomdocker - no worries! I mostly walk and I am far from last! Last year I was so under-trained that I walked the entire thing, took over 3.5 hours and still finished ahead of tons & tons of people.
Got out there for a 5k this afternoon. My shins were KILLING me!
The only reason I didn't bad it and turn around at the first mile was because mom was with me. The shins got a little better, but I definately have to research stretches. This is the second time my shins did this and I need to take care of this problem asap.

Hey everybody!! I have been MIA on the weekly thread for a long time! I guess I was a little sad about not going to WDW for marathon weekend this year...that was until this weekend, when my Fiance said he felt bad that I didn't sign up!! He heard about Anthony Travel and how they have Goofy entries, so it looks like now I will be going!!!! :cool1: :cool1: I am sooooo... excited!!! I can't wait, now all i have to do is get my rear in gear and get some training in!! I have been running all summer so I am in pretty good shape to start my program that I am trying map out.
That being said, I hope to be around here ALOT more, as I will need that extra motivation from everyone here to keep me going!!!!

We just booked through Marathontours. Marcia overnighted our reservation on Friday, and we just got our notice to register for GOOFY online today! From California to Boston, it took 3 days to send our info in.

Jeff-when did you sign up with marathon tours? My fiance booked today and we were able to get Pop Century?
We called them Friday morning. Our deposit went out USPS overnight that afternoon. They must have gotten it Saturday, or today.
Today we received email with a link to register for Goofy via Active.com.
There are very specific directions on how to enter using the "Guest" method of registering. You will not be asked to pay, because Marathon Tours pays it for you, then you pay them after any deposits you sent them.
Do not log into Active.com if you already have a user account, or register for an account. The email specifically says to use the guest link.
We're at POP Century. About $31 bucks more than using the magicforless travel agency, but then it comes with Goofy entry at this late point in time.

You will find that many here are "back of the pack" people and that there is definitely no shame in being last or at the back with us. As long as you can maintain a 16 minute per mile pace or I think it translates to 9:53 per km you will be fine. I would recommend though a 15 minute per mile pace or a 9:19 per km that would allow for a bit more time for photo opportuniites along the way.

Aloha Michelle,
I tell the suckers, er I mean runners in my marathon training group if they're smiling during or after a run with me, they didn't run hard enough. I want to hear them say they hated that run, or I quit. :lmao: I tell them the more PTA (Pain, Torture, and Agony) they do now, the easier a marathon will be.
Garwsh, hang out with some people for three days at Disneyland, and they start blaming me for everything.
Have fun with that 5K, I'm rooting for another outstanding race for you!
I'm doing the Nike Run for the Kids 5K, then do the one miler with Princess #1. Skipping my 18 miler with the clinic, so nice little break this weekend.
Marcia does the SF Nike half each year for the Tuxedo clad male models at the end, handing out Tiffany necklaces off of silver platters. She often gets in via the lottery, but sometimes lucks out and gets in without having to go through that process.
Here's CRAZY...
Now that 2009 Goofy is booked, and registration filled out, my wife and I are already looking at 2010 Goofy.
We'll be using our DVC points. Yep, we're already deciding on which resort to stay at before New Year's Eve 2009. How many nights, throw in the Disney Magic Cruise for 4 nights in between, and then back to WDW for the Goofy. Hmm, I might have to host a WISH cocktail party, bbq, pool party, or something.

yeah I know, I was kinda peppy, but I remember talking about having to walk back to the hotel.... going up the stairs to my room......going abck down the stairs to the ice machine....back up the stairs.... or something like think. I was having visions and going just a bit looney and that usually happens around mile 8/9. All that and I still kept up the whole "this is so much fun" look on my face?? Boy, I'm good!!
Jeff: Don't think I can pull off more time from work. I am having a hard time getting 3 hours off in October to participate in my college marching band alumni gig on a Friday. UGH!! (It's a no school day, so office will be busy, my thought is - its fine when people are sick or their kid is sick and they miss work, or leave early or come in late because of kids, but for me to ask off for 3 hour AHEAD of time is hard?????? DON'Tt understand at all.)
Take care everyone!!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! Seems like a great group here! It also seems like I'm really missing out not doing Disney this year. Good Morning All
Got up and did 3.25 miles this AM before I started work. I am not a big morning run person, but my Galloway group is doing 9.25 miles this weekend and since, unlike Jeff, I think that's a LONG way I figured I better get some work in this week and I have meeting this evening!
Jeff, the cruise sounds fun. I did the four day a few years ago. The day at sea was actually my fav!
Hope everyone has a good day!

Maura, Thanks for the Pixie Dust.
Claire, I'm Political Science and Women's Studies double major. What was/is your major?
Jeff, An easy 18 miles? The cruise sounds awesome though.
As for me, yesterday I did 3 miles at a nice and easy 9 minute pace. I also did my first strength training in about six months. Needless to say I'm sore, but it felt good.
Best,

Good morning everyone! I'm getting used to posting on the boards now..I usually just lurk.
TracyZ - Welcome to the boards! I am a lurker usually, but Jeff (the crazy one) has me hooked and now I am signed up to run the Goofy because I didn't want to miss anything!:rotfl:
Michelle - Will you be running WDW this year? I didn't see your name on the list! EASY 5K...yep you've been talking to Jeff. The Nike Womens has a chocolate mile also...they hand out chocolate squares. But the finishers necklace is what gets me to come back every year! You can't go wrong with a little blue box!
Jeff - YOUR CRAAAAZZZY! Of course I'm in for 2010! I couldn't let you one up me:rotfl2:
Tracy - Never say never...look at us! From no way we're going to WDW world this year, wait until 2010...to running the DL 1/2 and meeting the WISHers....yep we're running the Goofy!
Have a good day everyone!

Hey all, :wave2:
Boomdocker and Allie are coming from the UK to walk/run the WDW half marathon in January 2009.
I have visions of us being the last 2 sad walkers at the back and everyone else running at Olympic pace. Can you reassure us there will be other walkers or walker/joggers?
I can not speak for the rest of the group but I can absolutely guarantee you that I will not be running at Olympic pace.
Welcome! and don't worry - train, but don't worry - It will be fun.

Laurie: Yay! :goofy: Glad you'll be there!
Howard:  Dance lessons eh? What kinda dances are yall learning?
Jeff: Ooo Disney cruise? I wish! I've never been on a cruise, but I figure Disney one would be good.
Jennifer: My undergrad major was Elementary Education with a Special Education minor. I'm working on my masters with Gifted Education certification and hopefully my PhD with a concentration in childrens/adolescent literature. An "easy 9 min pace"?? I wish! You go girl!
For me:
I took a "gentle yoga" class yesterday. Not sure if it was that or the belly dancing, but I am definitely tight today in my back and hamstrings. I did my sprints today...always fun. My garmin quit tracking for about a mile, so I was glad I was going by time and not distance!

Hey Everybody! I will be heading to the gym in a little bit to get my 3 mile run in, and also do some really good stretching! Then when I come home I want to book our plane flights for marathon weekend, since I am OFFICIALLY registered for the Goofy!!!! I wanted drop in and catch up with everyone!
Howard--I hope you and Cam had a great time at your dance lesson.
MiaBanda--An easy 5k!......I don't think I have ever called a 5k easy, Good Luck with that race!
Jeff--You are like me..I barely get signed up for 2009 and I am already thinking about 2010 as well! My fiance told me last night that I better wait and see if I can get through Goofy this year...and I just laughed at him! The cruise sounds like a lot of fun!!
Carrie--Don't feel bad about your college football team...we were spoiled here in NJ for a few years as Rutgers had a pretty good team, but things don't look so good so far this year..I keep saying it is back to the same ole' rutgers!!
Welcome to all the new folks!!!

Claire, I may need to talk to you about education. Like I said I want to do Teach for America, but I've only ever studied education from a policy side. Grad school is definitely in my future, but I'm worried about burning out if I go straight away.
Oh and I guess easy is all relative.
As for me, Today I did 5 miles at a 9 minute pace. My route had some hills, but nothing too bad and just enough to keep me from getting bored.
Best,

Hello, WISH teammates!
So, after that being sick thing last week, DH and I went for a 2-mile, 35 minute walk the next night (definitely not killing myself at that pace), and I was still struggling to breathe so we came home (I know, I know, I need to go back to using the inhaler before even the shortest of walks). The asthma is making me bark bark bark all the time, and DH even complained several times about it. Just that dry, hacking, relentless cough. Blech.
I had a wedding on Saturday, got in a little beach walk at Island Beach. Sunday I was supposed to go in the pool, but my dad didn't turn the heater on or scrub the algae down, so... the dog got in a swim. Last night I was supposed to get my dad so we could walk in the park because DH doesn't like me walking on the streets...and there was a fatality in town that shut down the only access from here to either the park or my parents' house. DH was on the scene until 9 pm, so I stayed home and made him a nice dinner. He needed it. Because of the accident, he had to stay up late washing his uniform, so we went to bed late and got up early. I'm exhausted.
I am trying to walk more during the day. I'm getting in close to two miles at work wandering around the building (so that I don't feel so bad for being a scatterbrain and having to walk back and forth so many times!). Anyway, I'm getting my workouts in that way, although we need to get seriously training. We only have a little bit of time left! Yikes!
:welcome: new WISH teammates. This is a great place to set up camp.
Racy Tracy: What if you went to your boss, said you were taking an 8-week maternity leave, and then said, "Just kidding. I only need three hours." Maybe your request wouldn't seem so unreasonable. ;) And feel better!
WOOHOO! AlohaJeff IS going to be at the marathon! Yippee!
Hi, Panda! :cool1: I'll be back on the walking thread soon. I've almost finished straightening out the new school year. :)
Maura, stay dry!
Carrie, I'm with Hockeygirl. Rutgers is breaking hearts all over this year, AND they wouldn't sell us tickets. :headache: There's more to life than college football. After all, it's almost hockey season. :cool2: And I need to stop being a slug also. But I'm really good at it!
CarolA, way to go getting the miles in before work! DH wants me to try, but I really can't be out walking at 5 am. it's a genetic impossibility for me without the lure of immediate bling. And I don't have plane tix or a reservation for January, since DH has changed his mind a squillion times as to whether we are buying DVC/season passes.
For our Texas and Louisiana friends digging out of rubble, :grouphug:
Cecilia, TWO half marathons? Woohoo! I'm worried about finishing one! (But with my WISH team, I know I can do it!) You go! :)
Mooshu, I admire your spunk. I think if a race offered me an oxygen bar, I would be worried... I can't wait to see you in January!
Terri, I agree. It's not fair sometimes that if you don't have kids (or worse, if you are single) that some people think that means you don't have a family. :( And sorry I won't see in January. I guess I'll just have to do it again 2010. :D
Hockeychic, way to go on that humid 10K! :) Woohoo!
Howard, way to go getting those miles in! Woohoo! And DH and I loved taking ballroom dance classes. We took them for years, but then the teacher stopped giving them. Enjoy! I miss it. :)
Jennifer, I'm a teacher and interviewed for TfA many years ago. I don't know if my experience is relevant, but feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
Claire, your doggy paddle comment made me laugh. All through the Olympics, I kept telling DH that I could be a champion swimmer/diver/triathlete etc except I don't like my face wet. :rolleyes1 Yeah, that's the big problem. :lmao:
Kira, I'm here at the shore, and I was watching the same forecast and hoping that, while it breaks my heart to say goodbye to summer, it might make training a little easier.
Hi, Allyson! :cheer2: Cheering on someone is a workout. Cheerleaders say it's a sport. I count it. :) (Did you make a pyramid or do big jumps? ;) )
Boomdocker, I'm at the back of the pack. We had fun there. I only want to walk faster/interval so I don't have to be on the course forever.... Welcome!
Joan, sounds like you are on your way to a great 15K! Woohoo! :cool1:
Shan, keep up the good work! And let me know how that skirt works out. So many of the skirts had big bunched up fabric on my butt...
Kristi, way to go getting those steps in. That's the good thing about having a workout partner: it pushes you to keep going. Take care of those shins! I think Panda had some great shin stretches...
Hi, Amy!
Michelle, good luck on your 5K!
All right, I'm bleary eyed from staring at the screen, so my deepest apologies if I forgot anyone. :)

TracyZ - Welcome, I hope you are able to find lots of encouragement here.
Hawaii Jeff - Glad you were able to find a slot for Goofy.
Cam and Howard - Have fun at the dance lesson, I will be waiting to see you on Dancing With the Stars now. If I haven't seen already, hope your trip was a good one and you can calm down now that you are back.
Carrie - Which team are you rooting for. It does seem a little early for a season to have gone bad.
Mel - Ahhhh, I think the Big 12 is right behind the SEC though. Not that my team will be a threat for anyone this year.
Lily - Good to see you. Hope you are enjoying retirement and are able to slow down a little.
Hello to all the other people but kids are calling now and I think it is bedtime for everyone.

Jeff: Ooo Disney cruise? I wish! I've never been on a cruise, but I figure Disney one would be good.
Claire,
We went to Alaska on our honeymoon in 1995, and on our 2nd anniversary with my in-laws in tow. Did the inside passage both times, and it was incredible! I've only seen a tiny sliver of the vast frontier of Alaska. I would love to go back and see the interior.
I would also love to do the marathon cruise that WISHers Pat & Jim went on earlier this summer.
The food is they offer is unbelievable. You do have to workout on a daily basis to keep the weight off. :yay:
All I can say is, do it before you regret never going!

Jeff: I think that might well be the only time you can run Guru Les in the ground is when he is sick - at least for now:rotfl: .
Take care everyone and have a great Wednesday (is there anything great about Wednesdays??? It is just stuck there in the middle. At work if you are standing in the way of an area or table or drawer that you need to get too, we say, "You're acting like Wednesday." :lmao: )

Bill, Duckie & Laurie - U of MI. New coach. 6 turnovers. I think if we could hold on to the ball we weould not be awful. No excuses for 2 fumbles in our first 2 offensive plays. 14 nothing before 5 min was up. Got better fot a bit, then MUCH worse. I have season tix, but only use a ocuple, as it's a 3 hour drive. Not easy selling them off this year. Ugh. Lol, it is almost tiem to watch my WIngs, but MI football has always been my first love. :guilty:
Duckie - SO sorry that your asthma is so awful! :wizard: :wizard:

Mind was willing but bod was not yesterday. Still had a good pace fo 45 min. You'd think after 3 years I might learn a lesson or 2, though. Could not tell by my no brainer last night,. Plus, I got a blister on my arch because teh fat socks pulled down teh tape I had put on teh rub spot on my orthodics, so teh tape was double at the runb spot. Ms. Mighty Duck, thanks for the offer. I may PM after I find out next thursday if I get an interview.

Carrie The only thing more pathetic so far than watching the Wolverines has been watching the Lions! Biking and stretching today, indoor running yesterday. Just the usual training. I've decided to run fast indoors and just let the outdoor runs be what they want to be. Just popping in to say hi! :wave2:
I've been away from the weekly threads for a few weeks. Just too much going on here - lots of LTO.
Right as I was getting ready to start training for the SA RnR Half, I ended up with some foot problems that made it painful to run, so doing the half is out for me for this year. And that made me do some thinking and reevaluating of my goals.
I think that for the time being I'm going to concentrate on really building a good base, and get some more 5Ks and a couple of 10Ks under my belt before trying for a half. It just seems like the half is such a daunting goal right now that I'm freezing up whenever I even think about training for it.
So, that's my story. Hope everyone is doing well!

Looks like everyone is doing great.
I set a training PR this morning. Drum roll..........
"Earliest I have ever woken up for a training run." 4 AM, was out the door by 4:15. That is a record I don't want to repeat and definitely don't want to break. Getting up super early for a race is OK, for a training run it really stinks.
BTW,
Ran 18.2 miles average pace 8:37. Last 6 miles I averaged 8:28.
Good luck everyone!!

Ang--Sorry to hear about the foot problems, but it sounds like you have a great plan to prevent those injuries in the future. Good Luck!
David--It would be a PR for me just getting up that early to run!! Great run though...and an awesome pace!!
Hope everyone had a great wednesday!!!

My name is Tracy, I live in Vermont, and I'm currently training through TNT to run the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco 5 weeks from today. Anyone else out there running Nike?
I'll be running the Nike Womens half marathon...the first half of the marathon is the hardest...all hills, hills and more hills. ugggg!! I love it when you get to the top of one of the hills and they have an oxygen bar there! :rotfl:
I ran the Nike half last year and I absolutely loved it. That race is still my half PR! If I can offer some advice about the hills:
- Put the time in for hill training. It will pay off!
- Add hills to your long run if you can.
- When you hit the first big hill at mile 6 everyone knows it is coming. Everyone will groan and slow down and maybe start walking. Ignore them, and keep chugging up that hill. If you do, you'll sail through all those hills after.
Good luck!

Michelle: Sorry to hear you and your DD4 are not feeling well. I am just about over my cold, but still having some flem issues.
Jeff: Nice pics of Marcia. Her hair is swinging to the same side in both pictures, which makes them even funnier!!:lmao: (Hey Jeff, I'm off tomorrow!)
No walking today - will try to do some core work at some point tonight.

David~ That is a PR I don't want... I've done that for a few WDW Marathons and Halfs. Great job on your run.. I am VERY impressed. :worship:
I ran a somewhat easy 5 miles tonight. I am running in the Philadelphia Distance Run this Sunday and I am kind of in a "take it easy" non-taper. I am going to run one more time before Sunday... 5 or 6 miles really easy. Here is what I accomplished:
Miles: 5.03
Time: 45:10
Pace: 8:59
Splits:
8:53
9:24
8:52
9:00
8:46
I really did try to take it easy and run comfortably. I had some ankle discomfort but stretched out a bit off and on during the run and it cleared up. I need to make sure I stretch well before the half this wekend.
Have a great night!

Nothing new for me. DD4 and I have been sick with last night having been the worst. I sure hope this goes away soon...otherwise that "easy 5k" is going to kill me!
Michelle,
Something is going around, :wizard: for you both. You get yourself some zinc and fluids. That will perk you up for the 5K.
My little one was sick last Friday with a fever, and still has a bit of a cough.
Is your race on Saturday or Sunday? If Sunday, I'm running the Nike Run for the Kids race. Wanna race? LOL. :rotfl2:

Jennifer: My suggestion would be to try and get into the classroom a bit before you commit to teaching full time. Though observations get you into the schools, subbing would give you a much more realistic experience. See if there are any schools nearby that need a sub that would be similar to those that you would teach at with TfA. I get the hill thing...I tend to run faster uphill than down or flat.
Jeff: Alaska sounds so neat to cruise. My mom has always said that that's the only cruise that she would want to go on (until she saw something about an Antarctica cruise anyway!). I would love to get to the the dogs run though. Where did Pat and Jim's cruise go? How can you workout on a cruise ship? Run laps? Swim before the pool gets crowded? Hop around like a maniac?
Kristi: Wow that is one record that I would never think about trying to break. Eck!
Tracy: At work if you are standing in the way of an area or table or drawer that you need to get too, we say, "You're acting like Wednesday." :rotfl2: I'm soooo gonna steal that!
Carrie: Ouch! on those blisters. Take care of yourself girl! :wizard: ...it's like you have a typing lisp. :upsidedow
Michelle: :wizard: get better soon :wizard:
Jeff: LOL That first pic brings back some memories. I really wonder what I would do if I were a race leader...honestly--who do I follow? I guess that's why I don't run fast--I would soo get lost!
Which reminds me....I still haven't developed my film from Goofy 2007! Actually, I'm not sure where the camera is. I guess if I find it before this Goofy I can fill it up then develop it. oops!
This morning I got up and did a little strength training before hopping in the pool for a quick swim. Then off to the barn for a lesson. It was my first ride since the middle of July. I finished summer school and was home (hence no riding), then the storm messed over the barn (roof and fence damage with over a dozen big oaks down). I'll probably be sore tomorrow, but it's worth it! Not to mention a marathon of readings that I'm doing.
Oooo and I learned how to run a chainsaw last weekend to help with storm recovery. My parents response: "Oh good, Claire found the chainsaw!" a la :stitch:

Wow, it looks like I have a lot of reading to catch up on! I just thought I'd write up a quick (okay, nothing I type is quick) recap of my 10K this weekend.
We spent the week visiting family including four days at Disneyland and DCA. We had a blast and did all the usual fun stuff. My 2.5yo DD had a great time. We just went four months ago but it's amazing to see how much she's changed since then. She used to be terrified of the characters but now she ran up to all of them (well, except Captain Hook and Max who both scared her) and gave them big hugs.
I probably should have taken it easier walking around as I had a pretty bad blister on my left pinky toe by the end of the last day. Oh well, toes heal but that registration fee is non-refundable! ;)
I ran in the 10th Annual L.A. County Run for Health held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena two days later on Saturday. The race was well-organized although they had one major boo-boo. They had the 5K start 30 minutes before our 10K and they didn't have all the tape cleared before the first 5K finishers came running to the finish line. The first couple of runners didn't realize they would have to test their hurdling skills!
As we were gathering at the start, we had to keep the left side clear for the rest of the sub-0:30 5Kers to get past us. I guess this can happen on a race that loops instead of has a turnaround.
The course was basically just running around the large golf course next to the Rose Bowl. The 5K circled it once and the 10K twice. I was a little disappointed in that it wasn't very scenic but the hills weren't nearly as bad as in races closer to home.
I wasn't expecting to do that well as I hadn't done any exercise in the previous week due to travel except for walking around the parks. I also ate waaaaay too much junk food at Mickey's. I felt like I was carrying an extra 5 pounds around!
I actually really surprised myself at my time. I had been practicing doing a 4-minute run/1-minute walk in training. This was the first race I did that instead of going non-stop. It was my fourth 10K and first I completed in under an hour. I ended up with my new PR pace for any length race of 9:29, exactly 1:00 better than my previous 10K PR set last month.
I couldn't believe how much faster I ran it and how much better I felt afterwards. The walk breaks really energized me and made my legs feel a lot less fatigued.
Well, now my fingers are starting to get a little fatigued so I'll wrap it up. I hope everyone is having a great week!

Thanks for your comments so far guys. Just a couple of quick questions if you don't mind. A few of you have mentioned taking pictures on the way round, sounds fun, but how do you carry stuff around with you. Do you just have it in your hand or do use something to carry it, what about your personal belongings, what happens with those?
I feel a lot happier about our relaxed jogging/walking pace now. I have really worried about this and now I can just look forward to our fun run around the world. Thanks for the warm welcome. :flower3:

I wear a fanny sack with extra pockets. There is two bottle holders on it. Gatorade on one side, camera on the other.
During the run it's usually in my hand. During the boring parts of the run, it's in the pocket. When running through the parks, it stays out, since we stop for all the characters and parade floats.

Boomdocker: I also have used a fanny pack, I also have a spibelt. Recently at the DL 1/2 I got a pair of LD Raceready shorts that have 5 pockets across the back side. I had my small digital camera, gel, lipbalm, sports beans and a cell phone. It was great. In most of the "scenic" area I have my camera in my hand (like Jeff), juts be aware to put the little strappy thing around your wrist. Your hand can get sweaty and you don't want to drop your camera.
Off to go do 4 miles, see ya's

Dh says I have runners CDO - (thats OCD but in alphabetical order) Everything has to be exactly perfect before I start to run.
So what happens?
They tease me about how I tie my shoes and I get embarassed and tie them too quickly. I tie them too tight.
Now I have enflamed tendons in my left foot and have to cut my mileage down to recover.
Yeah, everything has to be perfect for a REASON. mutter mumble curse mutter
Boomdocker - Last year, I had planned to take a camera with me but the morning of the half, when I put the camera in my fanny pack I hated the way it felt, so I took it out. I plan to run a couple training runs with a camera this year to get the feel of it.

Always test run what you want to carry. If it is a camera, water, hydration belt, whatever always take a run and see how it feel and how you will use it. Take a good long run. Also test run your clothing...don't buy new shorts and shirts and think it will be perfect for race day without first trying a run in them.

Hi all! Just a quick update.
A few years ago I was diagnosed with plantar faciitis in my left foot. Going barefoot at TKD and being overweight took a number on my feet. It seems to have gone away, but in the past month my other foot has been having pain. It didn't feel the same as the first problem, but I figured it is the same condition. I made it to the podiatrist yesterday. Since I am starting to seriously train now, I didn't want to let the pain go and develop any other problems.
He gave me new orthotics that have a little more give than the ones I've been using. I haven't been running in my other orthotics at all since they are so hard and most of the summer I was wearing sandals or flip flops. I'm wearing the new ones today so we'll see how I feel.
Dee - DBF knows about these boards, but I don't think he's ever visited. We could try to direct him to the new blog so he could see what my plans are. The blog is very clear as to what my intentions are.
In case anyone is interested in the blog, the princess half link in my siggie will bring you there.

Yes, always practice with whatever you are going to use or wear on race day. I practiced first in my LD RR shorts about 2 months before the DL 1/2. I would slowly add things to the pockets to see how I liked certain things in certain places. I also practiced using the camera before I took it to a race.
Did 4 miles this morning. Did about a 14:07 pace. Definately had pinky pistols this morning - ugh.
Took Dog (Mickey) to the vet for some shots.
My PF (planar faciitus) is acting up a bit on my right foot after not having issues for about 2 years. Weird because I am losing weight and do some stretches before and after for that reason. I started keeping my tennis ball by the bed for right when I get out of bed in the morning. I have a massage on tap at 1pm, so I will ask him to do a bit more massage in that area.

A couple of tips on plantiar faciitis.
Use a golf ball, a piece of PVC pipe, or a frozen water bottle to roll your foot.
Put a towel or piece of material on the ground when you're sitting at work or watching tv, and do toe crunches, pulling the cloth towards your heal, using only your toes.
I use those Walk-fit inserts ("AS Seen on TV"), and they work really well. About $20 at Longs, Walmart, or similar stores. Follow the instructions carefully, it takes over a week to get used to them, as your arch is being reshaped.
If really sore, bend your toes "UP" with one hand, and use the other hand to massage the tendons on the bottom of your foot.
Don't take any aspirin, Advil, Tylenol, etc. before going running. You're only masking the pain, and could lead to further damage. It's okay to take after your run, but never before.

Thanks Jeff for the advice. Unfortunately, I am a seasoned pro with PF. I have had previously in both feet. My Massage guys found a tight shin on my left leg on the outter side which is probably why my hip was bothering me on the left back area and said I was probably compensating with the PF on the right foot. SO, STRETCHING and ICING is on order. I have iced already but will get out the foam roller and work on the outter shin areas, get out the tennis ball and work on the feet and hip area.
OK, I just announced this on the other thread but want everyone to know.....

Hi all!! Just realized I hadn't officially introduced myself on the proper, weekly WISH threads. I've been posting in the Fat Girls Walking Club thread for a few weeks now. I signed up for the Circle of Life 5K (during WDW marathon weekend) after being inspired by a friend who ran the DLR 1/2 and is doing the Goofy's Challenge. I've never run. NEVER! My slogan has always been "I don't run, unless someone's chasing me with an axe." Well, here I am in my 3rd week of training. Also just signed up for the Dana Point Turkey Trot 5K (in Dana Point, CA) on Thanksgiving morning, which will be my first race.
So, a bit about me: I live in Southern California, I'm 40, I'm an intense fan of the Champ Car World Series (the series is dead and gone, but I'lll hold onto the memories for life), I've been a motorsport photographer (see my website link in my sig), I've been a tall ship sailor (not since 2005, although I'm still around the boats now and then), I'm an amateur maritime historian and I'm a pirate. pirate:
This running deal is a brand new venture for me, so I'm looking forward to all the advice/support I can get. Glad to have found the WISH forum and the wonderful people I've already encountered within it. :thumbsup2

HI Everybody! Just got back from the gym and got in a great run on the TM, I ended up doing 5.5 miles in about 64 min. I am doing a run/walk program right now and I am going to work up to running the whole way. Hopefully this will prevent any IT band issues like I had last year before the marathon.
Not sure if I am going to be able to get a run in over the next 3 days as we are heading to Dover, Delaware tomorrow right after work for the Nascar Race!!! We are so excited!! I will definetely be back at it next week when we return!
Boomdocker--I carried a camera with me last year and kept it a fanny pack on my waist. I didn't even know it was there during the race, and I stopped to see most of the characters along the way!
mla1977--take care of that foot! HOpe the new orthotics help!
Tracy--Sorry to hear about the foot pain..I hope it is feeling better soon! Congrats on signing up for the Princess half!!
Anne--Good to see you! Have a great time in Philly this weekend! And 3 months without internet!! :scared1: I might go crazy without internet for that long!!!

Anne - Great to see you back! Can't wait to see you in Philly!
I've taken off the last couple days (probably not good when I'm still getting ready for the Distance Run). I had a blister, kinda on the bottom of foot, but between the big and 2nd toe. Then it developed into a callous, and during some recent training, got a blister on the callous. It was a little painful to walk on. But it started to callous and I filed it down as best I could. Didn't want to chance another blister before the race. Ugh!

Busy run today. 8 miles with Guru Les, who's almost back to his normal being. 8 minute mile at the fastest, and 9:30 at the slow warm up mile. 8:50 average.
I had to stop by Nike town to pick up my race packet and shirts. What's really funny is on my bib, my age is listed as 99 years old. I better come in first place for my age group, or that's pretty sad! :lmao: I put my regular birth date, but they messed up.
A fellow staff member from my clinic went to Maui Marathon and ran with his hair on fire. At mile 20, he was 2:30 into the race, when he collapsed. He didn't know what happened to himself, only that he woke up in the hospital, getting an IV. My only guess is he was dehydrated in the heat, and my very likely not taking any gels or power bars along the way.
Let this be a lesson to all, hydrate, and take something to replenish your carbs that your body is burning up during your training runs and races. This guy is an amazing runner, and he BONKED. Proof that no matter how good you are at this sport, if you don't plan well, your day is going to be ruined.
So be careful out there everyone. :thumbsup2
Happy Aloha Friday everyone, and have a great weekend.

I did 30 minutes of hill training on the treadmill last night followed by 30 minutes of flat running. I ended up logging 5.14 miles.
I've also been trying to get up early this week to do the exercise bike to help burn some extra calories. I only missed one day so far! Only 2.5 pounds to go for my initial weight loss goal I set for my first 1/2 marathon next month.

Hey WISHers!
Just finished week 7 of my starting all over program. ;)
Completed almost 14 miles this week, average pace for the week was 11:39.
Ran today with my new Cho-Pat dual action knee strap. I did OK with it and it didn't slide as much as the IT band wrap.
My new Skirt Sports GymGirl Ultra isn't as great as I was hoping it would be. I have a couple of the old GymGirls and the shorts underneath really don't seem that much different. It says the shorts run much smaller, but I find them to be almost the same. If only I could find something that didn't ride up! Does anyone have any suggestions?
I had one running skort that didn't ride up and my IT band wrap's velcro ripped it all up and I'm so bummed about that... They don't make that style anymore.
Wednesday I had a weird experience out running. Some creepy guy was riding his bike around our neighborhood aimlessly. He wasn't riding it for exercise for sure and I've never seen him before. The first time I saw him I ran back home and got my personal arm alarm, mace and cell phone. I know I should be running with these things anyway, but this was my reminder for sure! I passed him a few more times after that. DH wonders if he was casing the neighborhood. It was early in the morning, but most of the morning traffic was already gone so the neighborhood was kinda quiet. I just don't understand what he was doing! :confused3
Rock on WISHers and have a great weekend! :goodvibes

Ya, I actually have the Minnie one with the brief. (I bought it before they came out with the Minnie with the shorts underneath.) I have been wearing them with a pair of compression shorts underneath cause I'm worried about serious chafing. It is not working cause my cell phone on the pocket is weighing down the skirt and I'll look down and see my skirt is hanging low and my compression shorts are exposed. Jeff: (aka old man) I was so picturing this literally! a la Hades in Hercules...:lmao: On the serious note though, is he okay? Definitely a good reminder for us all. By the way, will you be needing a cane or walker for the race? Perhaps some prune juice? *snickers*
Shan: That sounds creepy. If you see him again, I wouldn't hesitate to call the police and ask them to drive by. Better safe than sorry!
Well I had a short long run of 6 miles today. I swear I'm getting slower... oh well! I'd rather run slow forever than run fast and get hurt. And following some WISH logic I have heard before....if I'm slower then I'm running longer and that means I'm burning more calories (and therefore can have a few more :mickeybar and :cake: ). Anywho I have way too much reading to do for this week so I will be cherishing my running time.
pixiedust: for everyone along the Texas (& W. LA) border. Just b/c Ike is gone doesn't mean life is back to normal!
Editing note: hmm I never new that Disboards edits words for you...I actually put *s n i g g e r s* but it changed it to *s******s* Not sure why it did that but *snickers* works just as well...though it makes me hungry.

I would have chafing issues but a healthy dose of body glide and I have no issues. Much better than the chaffing I get with shorts. You may want to watch out though if your skirt is falling down though!

Jeff: (aka old man) I was so picturing this literally! a la Hades in Hercules...:lmao: On the serious note though, is he okay? Definitely a good reminder for us all. By the way, will you be needing a cane or walker for the race? Perhaps some prune juice? *snickers*
Claire,
Yep, he lived to tell his story to Guru Les, who relayed it to me.
He was attempting his second marathon, trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon. He didn't make it in December, having cramped near the 23rd mile and had to walk in. This time he made it to mile 20.
I tell you, this guy is an amazing runner. Runs way faster than me. Just hasn't performed well on race day.
Yes, I will need some Geritol, prune juice, and an electric wheelchair to make it through Sunday's 5K and one miler (with my 10 year old). Imagine that, I was "89" years old when she was born. :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:  :scared1:  :scared:

Once you (1) finish, (2) get your metal, snack, and hydration, (3) take your picture, and (4) pick up your belongings, you are released into the tent area. Each tent has a letter (or letters) on it. The WISH team usually meets near tent "W" post-race. This is a handy area to meet up with any cheering friends or family that came with you. ...and then off to your cruise! (can i come?....I can fit in a large suitcase ;) )

Good Morning all my kooky WISH peeps!!
Went out this AM for a 4miler. Went pretty well, weather was nice early on and wasn't sweating until 1/2 mile in which is better than sweating right when I walk out the door.
Just wanted to pass on some info from the WDW resort...
*The new Extra Magic Hours (nighttime) policy is now taking place. It started Sunday at Magic Kingdom, but there was no information given that no wristbands would be given out. At 9 p.m. all attractions started asking for resort IDs for EACH person (even for the very young kiddies!) For the young kids without park tickets if they didn't have a Key to the World Card, any cast member at a FastPass kiosk could print an Extended Hours ticket that said they were a resort guest. The cast members said Disney is "Going Green" and they stopped the bands for that reason. Just be aware -- bring or get a clear lanyard to wear your resort card if you plan to stay late during the hours. Many parents were having difficulty trying to dig their cards out of big backpacks and diaper bags!
*The Disney Dining Experience has announced that it will be changing its name to "Tables in Wonderland." The change, which goes into effect September 15, 2008, will help differentiate the discount dining club from other Disney dining programs.
*REHABS/CLOSINGS:
Old Key West Village Pool Slide will be closed from January 5-23, 2009. The pool will remain open.
The Spirit of Aloha Dinner show will be closed January 13-19, 2009.
*Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground will be the host site of the inaugural Athletes for a Cure Triathlon taking place on September 21, 2008, to raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The Prostate Cancer Foundation will receive $25 of each athlete's entry fee. All athletes will also have the opportunity to win awards ranging from 2XU race uniforms to a 7-day cruise by racing in the special Fundraising Division. For more information, see the Athletes for a Cure Triathlon website: http://disneyworldsports.disney.go.com/dwws/en_US/endurance/events/detail?name=EnduranceAthletesforaCureTriathlonEven tDetailPage
So, hope everyone is having a good Saturday so far.

Happy Saturday Everyone!
I got up and did 9.5 miles with my Galloway Group. Bascially a new "frontier" for me. The only time I have come close was the Minnie and I walked more at the end on it. (Not to mention it was a HECK OF A LOT FLATTER) The woman who lays out our runs has a death wish. Seems like all of our LONG runs end with a long uphill slope..... The last mile was hard!
Luckily it's unseasonably cool here so it wasn't bad!
Tracy, It will be interesting to see how this new method works for EMH. I don't know.....
Jeff, I hope you surive that 5K (those kids will get you every time LOL!)
Claire. Take the "s" off your "banned" word and look at it. That's the problem. The censor program doesn't look for words it looks for "series" of letters... Your series spells a bad word LOL!
Shan, Not sure what to tell you on the skirt. For my long runs I use the Running skirt with the shorts in it and it works great! Almost all the others have "issues" with the shorts riding up etc. My second favorite skirt is one I bought a few years ago at Target, but the new ones there don't have pockets. I don't run with the cell phone though!
Have a good weekend everyone!

HI Racy Tracy...I'm just lurking around the boards. :) I ran 6 miles today and probably out for more tomorrow morning before I got to the final baseball game of the season for the A's.
I went out and got some Sorbothane inserts for my running shoes because my feet have been killing me after a run of 6 miles or more. I'm icing them right now and I have a little foot massager/roller...so hopefully that will help.
I hope everyone is having a great running weekend! Less than 4 months before we see all the WISHERS!!! Okay..I know Jeff has the count down clock on his computer...so I know he'll post the EXACT time. :rotfl:

Hey, I did chores today. Long overdue chores, LOL. Cut the grass, washed, waxed, vacuumed the truck.
Lounging around afterwards, as the little Princess is still battling a cough for a week now. What does she want to do all day, watch Disney Channel. :happytv:
