View Full Version : Is a $2 maid tip too cheap - or should I do $5 a day ?

We are staying at the Dolphin. I have my maid envelopes all done.
Yes I am early (58 days) - but it's out of the way and completed.

I put $5 in each envelope.

From the boards, I have read the maids at the Dolphin do nothing special in
the room - such as towel arrangements.

So, for a neat family of DH, DW, DS & DD - should I only leave $2 a day ?

Anyone have an opinion ?

We leave, on average, $3 to $4.

We follow the $1 per person per day rule of thumb. Tipping is up to each individual though. Many people do not tip housekeeping at all. Tip whatever you feel comfortable doing.

For two of us, I tip $3 a day. When it was 4 of us, I tipped $1 a day per person. This is my usual tipping for regular service, if something is done above and beyond usual cleaning then I'll add a couple of dollars.
Although housekeeping is not considered a 'tipping' position, I feel better tipping. Some people tip more, some less, some nothing; it's really a personal decision.

We usually tip $5/day for 4 people.

I just found some tipping guidelines from the Oxygen net. They are for a business traveler so I'd add a bit for a whole family staying in the room. $5 is a generous tip. If you will be staying several nights and that's a strain on your budget, you could take it down to $3-$4 per night.

Here are the guidelines

Well, we stay at the YC, and their maid service has always been great for us. We use to leave one tip at the end of the stay, about $15 for an 8 night stay, but now we leave an envelope every night. We realized it's not always the same maid cleaning the room, so if we left it for the end of the stay, it wasn't fair. Last year we put $5 a nite in an envelope for four of us in concierge.(This was a free upgrade) We're booked in standard this year, so I'm thinking $4 a night will be good. :)

Tip what YOU feel is right, and what you can afford! :):):)

We usually do $1 per person in the room, per day, unless extras, like towel animals, or arranging of DD's stuffed animals is done, then we increase it.

We do $5 a day for 4 people...2 adults and 2 children...but I think you should tip whatever you feel comfortable with...it is really more of a personal preference than anything! :)

Have a great time! :)

We give $2.00 a day for the maid service.
There are only two of us, and we always leave our room in good shape for the maid.
