I decided at 10:30pm it would be a good time to go to the store and get my hunker-down supplies since they have issued a tropical storm warning for SE NY. Nothing like last-minute preparations! I will take a page from John and Kevin's book and try not to eat the supplies before the storm arrives.

The key is to hunker with canned fruits, vegetables, and meats. If you hunker with Twizzlers, Ring Dings, and Double Stuffs, I guarantee you're going hungry once the weather hits. :rotfl:

I actually plan to go shopping tomorrow - during the worst part of it here in NJ. LOL, for some odd reason, I love driving in bad storms...snow is my favorite!!!

that's no fun....
but my hunkering food of choice is snickers, peanut M&Ms, and for healthfood - chocolate covered raisins....
actually, anything chocolate will do....

We had to "hunker down" in the rain and eat dole whips at the DIS meet in the Magic Kingdom last week......you should be a "hunkering" veteran by now!! ...........Is "hunkering" even a word?:confused3 :rotfl2:

The rain has started in Plymouth and is coming down good. I think I will toss on some clothes, go to BJs/Stop & Shop/Walmart for food. My food is for tomorrows game though.

Some history I stole on hunkering down.....

It sounds like the most typically American of phrases, but it seems originally to have been Scots, first recorded in the eighteenth century.

Nobody seems to know exactly what its origin is, though it has been suggested it’s linked to the Old Norse huka, to squat; that would make it a close cousin of old Dutch huiken and modern German hocken, meaning to squat or crouch, which makes sense. That’s certainly what’s meant by the word in American English, in phrases like hunker down or on your hunkers.

The Oxford English Dictionary has a fine description of how to hunker: “squat, with the haunches, knees, and ankles acutely bent, so as to bring the hams near the heels, and throw the whole weight upon the fore part of the feet”. The advantage of this position is that you’re not only crouched close to the ground, so presenting a small target for whatever the universe chooses to throw at you, but you’re also ready to move at a moment’s notice.

Hunker down has also taken on the sense of to hide, hide out, or take shelter, whatever position you choose to do it in. This was a south-western US dialect form that was popularised by President Johnson in the mid 1960s. Despite its Scots ancestry, hunker is rare in standard British English.

I'll be hunkering later this evening with some Chinese takeout and Wii.

Nothing like roughing it during a "storm". We'll see if it even really rains before I go to bed. All I care is that the basement doesn't flood.

I think I was a little late getting to the store, the rains started here last night but I didn't get out until this morning.

But I did get the essentials - ho-ho's, frozen pizza, cheetos and lays potato chips, already had chocolate, so now that it's almost over, I'm ready to start hunkering. :cheer2:

Glad you posted this! I actually heard a news reporter say hunker down, I think he was talking about West Islip. I laughed out loud at that! I went to get a manicure this morning and the place was packed! I guess there are some people who hunker down with manicures and pedicures? :) I also stopped for some snacks on the way home waiting for the rain and strong winds to hit Brooklyn.

I'm in the midwest, with, obviously, no hurricane threat in my immediate future, but I need a manicure. Maybe it could be practice in case I need to hunker down for a blizzard or something this winter?

Hope everyone on the east coast stays safe and dry this weekend!

If you don't know it, consider yourself lucky. If you recognize it, you probably want some cheese right now.

You don't know how much I am :rotfl2: right now. Are we brothers from another life?!?!? I've had this song running through my head since the word "hunker" was first used on the podcast!! :lmao:

I've even subjected my DGf to "Time for Timer" videos via YouTube...

:rolleyes1 This thread is bad to read before grocery shopping. I can't believe how much Cheetos costs now ($2.79 at our local store). We bought store brand instead---and plenty of chocolate even though Hanna had already left us.

I went light on my hunkering snacks but it did take me a while to find my onion and garlic potato chips. I do have a halloween candy bag from Costco that has been unopened for three weeks now (all time record!)

Seems like all this hunkering has been needless. This storm has been a bust. There's a light breeze and some drizzle.

Guess I need practice hunkering down. I had a 1/4 cup of trail mix all day (well until 5:00 pm) and a marylou's coffee (cinnamon french toast flavor). Went to Walmart, BJs and Stop & Shop all on an empty stomach and the only thing that I got not on the list was a twix. Still sitting on kitchen table.

Now if I could hunker down with no ramifications.....

Oreos and milk
Ding Dongs
Salt n' Vinegar Chips
Cheez Its

and ...... brownie batter

Gosh...all this hunkerin' down food kind of makes me jealous. In my neck of the woods (the ring of fire) there are several volcanoes that could blow between now and the next billion years -- would that qualify me as an official hunker downer? :flower3:

I just sent DH to Ruby Tuesday's for take out dinner, and it's pouring out. Later tonight I'll be hunkering down with some Double Stuff Oreos and a big glass of milk.

Living in the Ohio Valley, we only get the remains of the Gulf coast storms, if their rain bands hold together long enough to make it to us. Gustov's Remains hit us the last two days, with on again off again rains. Today was very nice, low humidity and Sunny. So, I've been hunkering down in my Office - aka Storm/Bomb Shelter (I got left in the building during a Bomb Treat) in the dungeon, I mean basement at work. Little Debbie Nutty Bars were my available snack food for my hunkering.

Thanks Jen...I decided to step out of the shadows once I got over my nervousness about meeting people at the DWFB meet. My features were thrown off a bit after I had to crop the photo to a size that would work -- but yep, that's me standing in my kitchen! :goodvibes

It's been pouring here in Long Island for the past several hours. We have LOTS of hunkering down food (and I made a hunkering down baked ziti for dinner!) but of course DBF and I are still trying to convince ourselves to brave the rain and get some hunkering down Starbucks..:goodvibes

Hanna was here yesterday in NC. I went to the store on my way home from work for my hunker down snacks. It was pouring rain, but I didn't want to be home and craving some junk food! By the time I left the store it wasn't raining at all :confused3 I tried to be good since we're doing free dining in 2 weeks and I at least need to fit into my shorts BEFORE we get there, since I can't guarantee I'll still fit into them AFTER free dining! :rotfl: Anyway, I got chex mix, sour patch kids and chocolate donuts incase power was out this morning and we couldn't cook breakfast (oh and a jug of water, so at least it looked like I was preparing for real :lmao: ) I really wanted icecream but remembered my DIS friends warning of the dangers of melted hunker snacks and I passed on the frozen aisle. When DH got home from work a few hours later, he had a pound of peanut M&M's! We ate the M&M's, I'd already had the sour patch kids, and we went to bed around midnight. We got a bunch of rain overnight, but no power outages and no damage  Of course we had the donuts for breakfast anyway :woohoo:

Oh - :offtopic:
I have a story to share about something other than hunkering that I LOVED about this storm. Last year this time, our nextdoor neighbor decided to do a MAJOR landscaping project that involved renting a bobcat to build a retaining wall in his yard. In the process he destroyed our side yard (the houses are only 10' apart at most) and totally messed up the drainage in our back yard by building up his yard. This DIY project had his yard torn up for 8 months, and being so close to our yard was seriously annoying. Anyway, with all the rain last night, his wall in his backyard collapsed! :rotfl: I know I should feel bad for him, but with all the crap we put up with for his project, I really don't! It was quite obvious he had no idea what he was doing and he should have hired a professional!! Of course now we're waiting to see what kind of mess gets created when he tries to fix his wall, but until then we'll quietly enjoy laughing at his stupidity :rotfl2: Moral of the story - if you're doing work on your property that requires you to rent a piece of equipment you don't know how to operate that's bigger than your car, HIRE A PROFESSIONAL or it may wash away!

I'm outside Annapolis. They say we got 6-7" of rain today but I'm not sure about that. There are lots of leaves in the road but no major branches. It seemed like just a rainy day with a little wind. Our power didn't even go out (although I pretended it did and got takeout for dinner). Now that's the way to have a hurricane!

We "rode out" the storm at Atlantic Beach, NC. We went light on the hunkerin' snacks: a bag of Doritos and a bag of Gala apples. I did get a pic of my children with Jim Cantore.

He goes to UMass/Dartmouth, and seems to like it. His sister does the same thing you do...she's actually popped over to his college a couple of times to check on him. Poor kid, he's getting mothered to death by both women in the family!

See, i told you, he wouldn't stay away from home for long! You have the free food! :lmao:

i have no need to hunker down, but with all this talk of food, i might just pop into tesco and get something just so i feel part of the gang. Ice Gems anyone?
